CONGRATULATIONS… Brooke Kelly was named the Central West Credit Union Sports Achiever for June. Kara Bellach was there to congratulate her. Brooke has been selected in the NSW team to compete at the National Interschool for Equestrian. She will compete against all states in Australia and also representatives from New Zealand.

Warbirds Downunder Temora competition winners: The lucky winners of our Warbirds Downunder competition are Gay Bayley and Jeff George. They will each receive a family pass to the event.

Latest Competition: Don’t forget to enter our latest competition and you could be off to the Australian National Field Days. Fill out the form on the front page or enter via the website www.forbesphoenix.com.au or via Facebook.

Greater Access To Drought Support: The NSW Government announced it is making it easier for farmers and their families to access the Drought Transport Subsidies and the Drought Assistance Fund. The current criteria is being lifted from a $1 million off-farm assets to $5 million, which means more farmers will now be eligible to access drought assistance. The criteria for ‘new entrants’ have also been created within the government’s drought assistance guidelines to support farmers who are new to the industry. In addition to amending the access criteria, it’s easier for farmers to get help completing and submitting drought support applications, with Local Land Services offices now providing this assistance. The Rural Assistance Authority (RAA) is open until 10pm weeknights, allowing farmers who have been out in the paddocks all day a greater opportunity to seek support. Department of Primary Industries (DPI) research stations and 37 Service NSW offices can also provide assistance to complete drought support applications. For more information visit www.droughthub.nsw.gov.au.

Spring Photo Competition: The Forbes Phoenix has teamed up with Farmer From Down Under Photography to launch a spring photo competition. Point your camera just about anywhere to get a scenic shot. We would love to see the great photos our readers can come up with. A wonderful prize is up for grabs – a framed picture donated by Farmer From Down Under Photography! The competition will run until October, with entries to be submitted to The Forbes Phoenix by Tuesday, 31st October. Entries can be sent to sales@forbesphoenix.com.au or via our Facebook page.

BOSCARS Theme Revealed

October 4, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

It’s here! A Midsummers Night’s Dream… the spectacular theme for the wonderful 2018/2019 BOSCARS in Forbes.

The committee is excited to be hosting the BOSCARS to be held on the 8th February 2019 and are looking forward to many businesses participating.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595/96. It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, the former queen of the Amazons.

These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies. It almost sounds a bit like business!

The Forbes BOSCARS committee rolls out 11 award categories that culminate in the coveted Business of the Year.

The People’s Choice Awards will be held via an online voting portal. These are Tradie of the Year and the Most Popular Business.

The BOSCARS open on 12th October 2018.

The categories include: Excellence in Social Enterprise, Excellence in Innovation, Excellence in Small Business, Excellence in Business, Excellence in Sustainability, Employer of Choice, Apprentice or Trainee of the Year, Employee of the Year, Young Entrepreneur, Start Up Superstar, Business Leader of the Year, Business of the Year and People’s Choice for Tradie of the Year and Most Popular Business.

A Night Out With Samuel Johnson

October 4, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Samuel Johnson is an Australian actor, radio presenter, voiceover artist and philanthropist. In 2001 Samuel Johnson was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal (Queen’s New Year’s Honours List) for his services to Australian society and Australian film production.

He has also held the title for GQ Magazine’s Social Force of the Year, received the 2015 Research Australia Advocacy Award which he shares with his sister, Connie Johnson and in 2016 he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to cancer research.

In 2003, Samuel rode 1,003.4 kilometres from Sydney to Melbourne on a unicycle to raise $500,000 for children’s cancer charity, Canteen.

Ten years later he decided to ride the unicycle again! This time he would ride around the whole of Australia, raising close to $2 million for the Garvan Institute of Medical Research to find a cure for breast cancer and setting a new Guinness World Record.

This was done to assist Connie to spread her message of breast cancer awareness. A few years on, the Love Your Sister foundation, the charity he founded with Connie, is going strong. Having achieved all the goals he and Connie (who has sadly passed on) set out to achieve, Samuel continues to raise the bar. The current challenge being to raise $10 million for cancer research. Well on his way, having already raised over $4 million, Samuel won’t stop raising awareness until cancer is vanquished.

The Forbes Business Chamber is proud to host a dinner and talk with the remarkable Samuel Johnson on 19th October at 6:30pm at the RSL club as part of the Girls Day Out 2018 event. Men welcome to attend. Get your tickets for only $130 at www.123tix.com.au/events/1863.

Clean Out The Shed

October 4, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

It is that time of the year when we all do a little spring cleaning. Clean out the shed or garage of all those unwanted toxic chemicals that aren’t being used or have passed their used by date. The safest way to dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals is at a ‘Household Chemical CleanOut’ event. Forbes is taking part in this great free event again this year on 19th October.

You can take household quantities of the following household chemicals and items to Forbes Shire Council storage yard in Young Street between the hours of 10am to 1pm. A maximum of 20 litres or 20 kilograms of a single item including:

• Solvents and household cleaners

• Floor care products

• Ammonia-based cleaners

• Pesticides and herbicides

• Poisons

• Pool chemicals

• Hobby chemicals

• Motor fuels

• Fluorescent globes and tubes

• Acids and alkalis

• Smoke detectors

• Paint and paint-related products

• Gas bottles

• Fire extinguishers

• Car and household batteries

• Motor oils and cooking oils

Please make sure you handle and transport chemicals carefully.

It is advised never to mix chemicals as this may produce dangerous reactions so keep all chemicals in their original containers.

Ensure the containers are clearly labelled and well-sealed. If you don’t know the contents, label the container “unknown chemical”.

Keep toxic household chemicals away from passengers, for example, by placing them in the boot of your car.

Contact Council on 6850 2300 to find out more details.

Great Southern Hearts Drive Into Forbes

October 4, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Great Southern Hearts Drive for Life campaign rolled into the Forbes Showground on Monday afternoon. The campaign brought with it a convoy of trucks filled to the brim containing approximately $70,000 worth of hay, feed, pellets and any other personal necessities to provide much needed relief to drought stricken farmers in the Forbes and surrounding districts.

The campaign began on Monday, 24th September leaving from Kojonup in Western Australia’s Great Southern, and has made its way across the Nullarbor, stopping off at key locations along the way where these supplies were needed most. The campaign gained serious momentum shortly after Glenn “Yogi” Kendall (of Kendall Trucking & Co – Katanning) and Peter Wright (of Peter Wright Transport – Kojonup) first floated the idea only weeks ago.

The campaign stemmed from the understanding that farming is very “challenging” and that right now “challenging doesn’t even begin to describe what farmers in rural NSW are going through.”

“We want farmers to know that there are people on the other side of the country thinking about drought struggling areas.

The Great Southern know they need our love, support and mateship,” said Yogi.

“The campaign is 100 percent not-for-profit and all items have been donated by local farmers, community groups, as well as local community members. Every single cent raised and every donation is going where it is needed.

“Around 50 farmers in the Forbes district received assistance in some shape or form. The help has been very well received and we could see that people are quite desperate and how needed this was,” said Yogi.

According to Yogi another goal for the campaign was to focus on creating more awareness.

“Farmers and community groups are desperate to know how they can help. Conversations with people who previously didn’t realise how bad the situation was are being had and they in turn are doing their bit of spreading awareness and giving what they can,” said Yogi.

The local CWA ladies and Forbes and District Lions Club combined on the day to supply the working truck drivers with afternoon tea, a hot meal at night and a cooked breakfast. Local Forbes businesses donated all the food required.

Free Water To Forbes Rural Residents

October 4, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Shire Council has resolved to supply bulk portable water to rural residents of the shire free of charge. Residents are able to attend the Forbes Shire Depot between the hours of 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.

Residents are asked to clean their containers prior to pick up as Council accepts no responsibility for the quality of water once it has been discharged at the depot.

For safety reasons members of the public are not to drive into the depot area but must report to the office first. Loads should be secure and within load limits of the vehicles.

Registered bulk water carters will need to make contact with the depot to discuss a safe time to enter and use the high capacity hose.

Contact 6850 2370 for more information.

Catch of the Week Winners: Thank you for sending your great fishing pics and please keep it coming! Luke Nealon was our September winner. Please claim your $25 voucher prize for Loomzy’s Fish ‘n’ Fix in Forbes, by contacting Linda van Coller on 0477 309 807 to arrange for collection.

Snakes and Snakebites: While 57 percent of snakebites happen in regional and rural areas – the majority happen near homes or buildings. Here are some basic precautions you can take to reduce your chances of being bitten: (1) Be careful where you put your hands and feet. Snakes like to hide where they can’t be seen, which includes holes in the ground, rock crevices, fallen logs or long grass. Use a torch if walking at night as many snakes are active after dark. (2) Wear protective clothing. Thick clothing like jeans and boots offer an extra layer of protection against bites. (3) Don’t pick them up or interfere with them. If you see a snake, give it space to move away, or go around it. (4) Let them know you’re there. Snakes can’t hear very well, but can sense vibrations in the ground. When walking in the bush, make noise and stomp your feet to scare off any nearby snakes.

Managing Your Crops: Finding it hard to make decisions about how to salvage crops affected by drought and/or frost conditions? NSW Department of Primary Industries have developed a calculator that helps to compare various management options. Check it out online at https://bit.ly/2IvBgf2.

We would love to see the great photos our readers can come up with. A wonderful prize is up for grabs – a framed picture donated by Farmer From Down Under Photography!
