Teddy Bears Picnic Is Back For 2019

October 18, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

If you go down to Lions Park on Saturday 19 October, you are sure of a big surprise! The popular Teddy Bear’s Picnic is returning this year and on a Saturday.

It truly is a day for the whole family to enjoy. This year’s event will include over 28 activities and rides for the children, including a crash course, bandage a bear, face painting and unicorn land, to name a few. “We are overwhelmed by the success of previous picnics and cannot wait to bring our biggest and best to the community so far,” says Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM.

Taste of Greece, Sweet Three Vintage Van and BBQ by Forbes Lions Club will all be on site. Coffee by Larz and an ice cream van will also be available to supply treats for big and little kids alike.

Children are asked to bring along their favourite teddy to participate in the Teddy Bear Parade. Each child will receive a token for participating. Make sure you have your name tag on your bear in case he or she accidently gets lost.

The musical performances on the day will feature Mainly Music, Maddi Collits and Georgia Sideris who will get the children ready to have some fun. Both Forbes North Dance Troupe and Kristen’s Dance Studio will also perform.

“Food and refreshments will be available on the day or bring a picnic,” says Mayor Miller. “It is a lovely event the whole family can enjoy for little to no cost.”

Teddy Bears Picnic forms Council’s celebrations of Children’s Week and the picnic starts at 10am and concludes at 2pm.

Conveyancing

October 18, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Buying and selling land can be fraught with difficulties and there are constantly changing laws.

The vendor (seller) needs to have:

• All swimming pool owners are required to have a Certificate of Registration of compliance from the local council attached to the contract.

• The Federal Government requires owners selling property for $750,000 or more need a Foreign Investment Clearance Certificate from the ATO whether you are a foreigner or not.

• The Land Registry Services now require most conveyancing transactions to settle via electronic settlements (i.e. PEXA).

• The law requires all auctions of land and all sales of a house and residential blocks of land (even by private sale) to have pre- prepared contracts for sale of land, re- quiring inclusions of searches, Land Tax Certificates, zoning certificates, sewage diagrams or particulars of registration of septic services, plus more depending on the type of land to be sold.

• Residences need to have a smoke alarm, plus more…

The purchaser (buyer) needs to have:

• Finance: sufficient money in the bank or an organised loan, plus a deposit (usually 10% of the purchase price).

• A pest and building inspection prior to entering a contract, plus a survey of the land in some circumstances.

• Check what chattels (moveables) the vendor is including in the contract.

• Check whether the purchase price includes GST or not. Most house and farm sales are exempt from GST, but still check.

It is almost impossible to conduct conveyancing without a solicitor. We at Matthews Williams are available to help you.

Lions Park Safety

October 11, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

In the interests of public safety, Forbes Shire Council are initiating a temporary exclusion zone around the new container café in Lions Park.

“We are really pleased that so many tourists and members of the community are keen to enjoy this wonderful space by the lake,” says Forbes Shire Council General Manager, Steve Loane. “But we need to ensure that people are able to do this safely.”

Exclusion works in the park will include the erection of temporary bollards in front of the container café to separate pedestrian traffic from the road. Lions Park will also be extensively signposted with safety and shared zone signs.

The park features play equipment for children and the temptation for them to run over to this equipment is high. The BBQ area and new fishing platform share the space and the public need to be on the look-out for children in this vicinity.

“Our parks must remain safe places for the whole family,” says Steve Loane. “Cars don’t really belong in our parks, except to set up and pack down for events and markets. I’d encourage the community to relax and unwind in our beautiful open spaces, such as Lions Park and leave the car parked outside the park, or leave it a

Community Supports Boys To The Bush Camp

October 11, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Camp participants and members from the Men’s Shed relaxing around the campfire.

Another successful Boys to the Bush camp was held across three locations last week, Forbes, Howlong and Lake Cargelligo.

Half of the boys attending the camps came from the Forbes and Parkes area, with many now regular attendees. The boys visited local farms, learning about shearing/ crutching, went fishing for cod, kayaked along the Lachlan and trekked through Nangar National Park.

The Forbes camp was coordinated by Jared DeMamiel and he was assisted by lo- cals Jarrad and Sam Tyack. Local legends Bailey Hartwig and Grant Acheson also gave up their time to spend some time with the boys on the camp.

Forbes Camp coordinator Jared DeMamiel was delighted with how successful and enjoyable the camp was for the local

boys that attended. “I’m blown away by the support we have received. From local businesses, farmers and volunteers, it’s truly been a team effort in making this camp such a huge success.”

The camp was well supported by the Forbes community, with goods donated by Flint St Butchery, Bernardi’s IGA and Forbes Bakehouse. Members of the Forbes Men’s Shed and Tyack and Maguire families cooked delicious meals for the camp and Blake from Bernardi’s IGA delivered a box of marshmallows for toasting on the fire. Darren and Carly Cowan supplied the venue for the camp.

Boys to the Bush will continue to conduct camps in Forbes thanks to the support of the community and plan to start MENtoring programs in the near future.

The Power Of The Great Aussie Cuppa

October 11, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Michelle Mahlo, Sue Cunningham, Danielle Hodge and Karen Wright helped out at Grazing Down the Lachlan.

“It’s amazing what a good cup of tea can do for the soul” and “Just what I need is a nice refreshing Cuppa,” were just a few of the sentiments many patrons of the Grazing Down The Lachlan were voicing when they arrived at the last station of the event. Tired and some perhaps a little under the weather, were delighted to find that a good old ‘cuppa’ awaited them.

Four ladies from the CWA Forbes Evening Branch volunteered to serve good old fashioned cups of tea. They were even more surprised to learn that teapots with real tea leaves were being used, while they gathered to listen to some good music and discuss the day’s adventures along the Lachlan.

Michael and Denise Walker and Judith Taylor enjoyed the Country of Study International Dinner.

Part of the CWA values is to be involved with the community. Assisting with Grazing Down The Lachlan has been only one of many events the branch has been involved with recently. A group of 9 members assisted the Forbes PA & HA providing morning tea and lunch for judges and helpers at the recent show.

Recently, the annual Country of Study International Dinner was held where guests were treated to a feast of traditional Papua New Guinea foods cooked by Kim and Marc from The Van. Guest speaker Michael Walker entertained the guests talking about his experiences of walking the Kokoda Track with a group of Forbes men, while Karen Wright spoke about her experience of visiting the country as a tourist. A great night was had by all members and their guests.

The Australian National Field Days (ANFD) provides a unique opportunity for retailers, primary producers, the general public and government organisations to come together to share information in a hands-on forum.

Nothing As Snug As A Tea Cosy

October 11, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Maralyn Wise from Forbes (right) receives her prize from Alison Evans for the Judges Choice award in the biennial tea cosy competition of the Parkes Craft Corner.

Two years after its highly successful inaugural tea cosy competition, the Craft Corner in Parkes has again brought this celebrated relic back to life!

“The quality is just amazing and the talent the entrants displayed with their skills to crochet, knit and sew is just fantastic,” said Alison Evans of the organising committee.

Last Friday, the 43 entries from all over the state were put on display for the announcement of the winners. Judges Kelly McGirr and Elsie Mahon carefully considered all the entries and picked the winners.

Maralyn Wise from Forbes won the Judges Choice award. She also received a highly commended for her entry in the Weird and Wacky category.

Maralyn was overjoyed with her prize say- ing it was the first time she had ever won something for her knitting as quilting and patchwork were actually her forte. She had so much fun making the cosies, she ended up entering about eight for the competition.

Frances Charlton’s traditional doll cosy won the Treasured Memories category. Sharon Preisig (who won two prizes two years ago) took out the Weird and Wacky category and received highly commended in the Floral Splendour category.

Joanne Veronese was first in the Floral Splendour category and achieved highly commended in the Treasured Memories category.

Voting for the People’s Choice winner will take place until 21st October at the Craft Corner when the winner will be announced.

If you have not seen this impressive and very creative exhibition, it will still be on un- til the end of the month. If your eye catches one, most of the cosies are for sale too!

Parking Times Enforced

October 4, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Shire Council Rangers Mat Wallis and Jessica
Burbage.

Forbes Shire Council is delivering on its commitment to ease traffic woes in the CBD with parking times being enforced by Council Rangers. The demand for on-street parking spaces in the CBD is extremely high, and Council Rangers will play an important role in administering and enforcing the restrictions on stopping and parking to ensure safe, efficient and equitable road use for everyone.

“It is so very important to begin enforcing the parking restrictions in our CBD at this point in time,” says Forbes Shire Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM. “Our retailers are finding the drought hard and we need to give passing travellers a place to park, so that they will spend money in town.”

“It’s a good thing for our town, we need to ensure our businesses are accessible for customers,” says Marg Duggan, President of Forbes Business Chamber and local business owner. “It is especially important to have these parking spaces available for less mobile customers.”

The trial period for the introduction of parking infringements is coming to a close and from 8 October parking fines will be administered.
