Prevent Poisoning At Home

July 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

It is important to be vigilant with children and adults alike around potential household hazards. The numbers are worrying.

Around 180,000 calls are made to Poisons Information Centres in Australia each year and around half of those incidents involve children who’ve come into contact with poisonous, or potentially toxic, substances.

From detergents and toilet cleaners to hand sanitisers and pool chemicals – many everyday household products are a hazard, particularly for younger children.

A recent report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) found almost 2,500 children are admitted to hospital each year following poisonings.

“The most serious incidents relate to carbon monoxide exposure, button batteries, caustic cleaners such as oven and BBQ cleaners, acids, pool chemicals, household bleaches and herbicides,” says Delia Rickard, ACCC Deputy Chair. “Children under five are most at risk of accidental poisoning, with the risk highest for two-year-olds.”

The ACCC report says injuries from poisons range from skin irritations and eye damage through to severe internal burns.

How to keep your home safe from poisons:

• Store cleaning products in a secure cabinet that children can’t reach.

• Check the kitchen, laundry, bathroom, toilet, garage and garden shed for potential poisons and stow them away securely.

• Keep household chemicals in their original containers – don’t transfer them to used soft drink bottles. Young children could easily mistake poison for pop!

• Read the safety instructions on product labels and follow use and storage directions.

• Always close containers properly so any child resistant features work correctly.

The Consumer Credit Code – Protection For Borrowers

July 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Most credit arrangements, or contracts, are covered by the Consumer Credit Code (CCC). Before a credit contract is offered, the borrower must be given a statement by the credit provider. A document that sets out the borrower’s rights and obligations must also be provided.

Some of the items which must be disclosed under the code are:

• The amount of the credit;

• The interest rate, and how it is to be calculated. If it is a variable rate, you must be told how you can check this;

• All charges and fees must be disclosed, including ongoing loan maintenance fees and default costs and fees. This must include any government fees and charges, including any stamp duty;

• Commissions paid to or by the credit provider;

• Details of any required security, such as a mortgage or a guarantee, and of any required insurance.

The contract must clearly set out what terms of the contract may be changed by the credit provider during the term of the contract, and the notice that must be given by the credit provider. These may include changes to the interest rate and changes to the repayment instalments. Where the contract sets out pegged interest changes and repayment instalments, a separate notice need not be given.

So be careful. Fully investigate any proposed credit arrangement and, if the terms are not fully understood, get professional advice before signing up.

Chain Of Responsibility Threat

July 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Shire Council is taking a bold step in speaking out against what it feels is unfair treatment of local government under the new Chain of Responsibility legislation.

Under the legislation, Council as the loading manager of the Central West Livestock Exchange (CWLE) is responsible for any breaches that may occur at the facility, including overloading, driver safety and fatigue.

General Manager, Steve Loane said that council has just been served an improvement notice addressing some 57 breaches by transport operators leaving the CWLE.

“We have been working hard to educate transport operators to ensure the breaches do not occur by ongoing site inductions covering the requirements of Chain of Responsibility, extensive signage around the site and direct letters to all operators,” said Steve.

“The improvement notice issued would require funding in excess of $2 million worth of additional infrastructure just to comply.”

“We are concerned that Council is being made an example of despite doing our best to address the requirements of the legislation. We are determined to take our case to as many political influencers as we are able, to bring about some fairness to Chain of Responsibility laws.”

Care For Farmers – Donate Small

July 5, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

As the current winter continues to be a mostly sunny one, the drought tends to pop up in many conversations. One woman has decided it is not good enough to just talk about it, but to do something for the farmers.

“We can all help to give the farmers a hand up,” said Karen White. She started last Thursday asking her friends on Facebook to put together a care package and immediately had a wonderful response.

“Getting animal feed is priority for the farmers at the moment, which means there might not be much left for other daily necessities.”

Karen’s idea is to put together packages with anything from toothpaste to teabags, something for the kids or something to help mum and dad wind down. “A bottle of wine and a bag of nuts could give them some time to relax and not think about the drought for a while.”

Karen said the idea was not to spend a fortune and as little as $4 items would make a difference. She also suggested bags of dog biscuits to help keep the working dogs fed.

Karen will be collecting donations for the next two weeks and a friend will help with the distribution.

Donations can be dropped off at 50 Hilda Street in Forbes.
