Jump On The Wealth Train

July 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Orange resident, Daniel McGregor is turning the financial planning industry model upside down with a revolutionary idea of giving people the ability to create their own financial plan. Daniel, who will be writing a regular column called Wealth Train in The Forbes Phoenix, said he wanted to be a catalyst for change after spending 15 years in an industry plagued by bias.

“Australians pay around $20 billion in fees and expenses on their superannuation and they pay another $5 billion in fees to financial planners,” he explained. “The more of these fees people can keep in their own pockets and the more they have their money appropriately invested, the better off they will be in the long term.

Daniel said he wanted to show people the simple changes they can make that can have a profound impact on their ability to generate wealth. Visit www.wealthtrain.com.au and start your journey to financial freedom.

All coaching is free. Parents who would like to learn to umpire should attend at 5:30. Entries for the Spring night competitions for mixed and ladies teams close on 10th August. The first round will be played on 31st August. Orange NA will be holding a Gala Day on 7th August. The FNA will be taking three teams of 11, 10 and 8-9 years (NetSetGo). Anyone interested in playing contact Lyn Ford via email secretary.forbesnetball@gmail.com

All players must be financial members on NNSW. This will be an exciting and ground-breaking day for the FNA. Teams will be invited from all parts of NSW.

McLachlan Bull Sale

July 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The McLachlan Group bull breeding business will be holding its annual bull sale at the North Logan property on North Logan Road in Cowra on 10th August at 1pm.

The sale will be the business’ fifth annual sale, and McLachlan Group’s Warren Miller expected it to be a popular sale. The sale will have 35 Angus bulls, 20 Charolais bulls and two Polhereford bulls. Angus bulls are the most popular for beef, and Warren said these should sell fast.

All the bulls are grass fed, meaning they live longer, and produce better quality beef. According to Warren, the McLachlan Group’s bulls are very valuable. “Our bulls are of the highest quality, which means our buyers get the best grass fed beef they can.” The past four annual sales have been hugely popular with bulls selling for about $4, 000 each.

Grass has grown very lush after good rains and has lead to very good cattle sales across the region.

Local Butcher Shannon Birmingham from Forbes Central Butchery is making prizewinning sausages. He won the continental category with his German Bratwurst and Australian Lamb Sausage at the Central West Sausage King and Best Butcher competition in Orange recently. “The secret is good quality meat and the addition of great herbs and spices,” said Shannon.

He has ‘sausage flavours of the week’ every week, and other specials, including steaks, lamb chops, cutlets, roasting portions, chicken and pork on his Facebook page. Shannon will take part in the state final in Bathurst on 24th September. Good Luck Shannon!

Mayoral Notes…

Wasn’t the weather on the weekend great? It was so nice to sit in the sun and feel alive again. The sun didn’t last long though with more rain upon us. Just a reminder for when you are driving around the shire, there are a number of roads that have been affected by rain creating soft edges and potholes so please make sure you travel with care. We will be completing the repairs as quickly as possible.

Our July meeting was held this week and it was our new General Manager Danny Green’s first Council meeting since arriving in Forbes. Please mark Wednesday, 3rd August in your diaries as we are having a welcome function for him at the Forbes Services Memorial Club from 5.30pm to 7pm.

This is a great chance for everyone to come along and say hello, enjoy a nibble and drink. Everyone is welcome, please RSVP for catering purposes by calling 6850 2361. Another event to mark in your calendar is the Forbes NAIDOC Week celebrations on 23rd August. NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate with our traditional owners as one united Australia.

As you know, the Census is being conducted on 9th August and field officers are still needed for our area. If you are interested in these paid positions visit www.abs.gov.au. Last Thursday, Evolution Mining announced $12,500 in funding for Forbes Wheelchair Basketball. This is fantastic news and will allow for five specialised wheelchairs to be purchased as well as other equipment.

Have a great week, stay safe and God bless.

Between The Sheets

July 21, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Bedrooms are no longer just a place to lay your head after a long day of toiling. Whether we work outside of our home or inside its walls raising children, our bedroom can be a room of great importance and significance to our wellbeing. A bedroom can be a private sanctuary that we can retreat and withdraw to when needed. By escaping from the outside world for a while, a beautiful bedroom can allow us to relax and unwind, taking pleasure in the fact that we are safe and secure in a tranquil space that we have created for ourselves.

By surrounding yourself with items you love and cherish, your bedroom can become a true reflection of your own personality. Because your bedroom is a private space you can really express your own personal style in a much more dramatic way.

A bedroom is not on show to the world like the main entertaining areas of your home, so decorating choices can be bolder. Get daring and express yourself with colour, prints and patterns. When choosing your bedding and curtaining don’t be afraid to mix patterns and prints as well as incorporating different textures into the choices you make.

Purchasing a quality mattress and bed will ensure that you will have that sensational night’s sleep you have been longing for. But for an instant update, just change your bedding. A new quilt cover can work miracles in changing the overall look to a room. Throws and cushions add texture, warmth and bring the whole theme together.

And in my opinion the more cushions you pile on the bed, the better the effect. This is a design rule that I follow to the letter, as all my friends will attest to when they see my own bed. Remember to decorate with pieces you love and that hold special significance to you, as well as incorporating photos of loved ones to really create a story about your life. I personally love groupings of photos arranged in block formations with the same framing to give a really designer look to our everyday family photos.

A well-placed rug in a bedroom will have maximum impact in giving your private space a really luxurious feel. Imagine placing your feet on a soft shag rug each morning when you step out of bed.

Making sure you have enough storage is also critical to gaining maximum efficiency from how you are going to use your bedroom. There will be no solace sought in the space if clutter is intruding on your life. Lamps and soft lighting will give the space an intimate feel, add an armchair and your room is ready to go. So grab your latest copy of my magazine or the current novel you are reading, curl up in your favourite chair or lay on your new bed surrounded by cushions and start enjoying the fruits of your labour.

Grant Clifton

How long have you lived in Forbes? I moved here about 14 years ago. I had a farm in Tullamore for 19 years, sold it and moved to Sydney where I gained some hospitality experience before moving to Forbes in December 2002.

Where do you work? I bought the Vandenberg Hotel 14 years ago.

What do you enjoy most about your job? The most interesting part is dealing with people, talking about their lives, and serving the public.

What do you do in your spare time? I do not have much spare time, but when I get time my partner and I like to travel in our motorhome to see parts of Australia.

How do you like your coffee? Latte – the soft approach.

What makes your day? Probably knowing I have achieved something for the day no matter how big or small, and also when I have learned something new.

If you could go on holiday anywhere in the world where would you go? I would like to see Europe as I haven’t been to any parts of it.
