In Memoriam OLIVER CARLISLE Prinical’s Message

August 4, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

john

The news that our school captain, Oliver Carlisle had tragically passed away on Saturday morning came with great sadness to the Forbes High school community.

Olly was well-known and well-liked by students, staff and parents. He was a charismatic character who had a great sense of humour and always enjoyed a chat, a laugh, a joke and a game of chess. Olly will be remembered for his contribution as a respected leader of our school both as captain this year
and as an active member of the Student Representative Council throughout his school years. His commitment will be remembered as will his input into a variety of projects at our school.

Olly was a great role model and always supportive of younger students. His active involvement in sports not only focussed on his strengths of long distance running and athletics, but spread to other team sports in which he was always happy to contribute to help Forbes High put on the best possible showing in knockout competitions.

In his final months preparing for the Higher School Certificate, Olly had a particular passion and skills in Design and Technology and was completing a multi-functional entertainment table as his major assessment project.

The entire Forbes High community joins us in extending our deepest sympathy and love to Olly’s family.

Mayoral Notes…

July 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

council

We have had some minor flooding across the Shire this week and a number of roads have been closed. Please remember that it is not only an offence to drive through a road closed sign, it is also dangerous as the condition of the road is not known and there could be submerged logs in the water.

Before our July Council meeting last Thursday, Councillors and executive staff had lunch with John Cobb and his wife Lisa to give our thanks and appreciation for his time as our Federal Member. John was always at the other end of the phone when we needed him and always did his best for Forbes and for that we are very grateful.

We are now looking forward to working with Member for Riverina Michael McCormack, who is also our new Small Business Minister. I am sure that he also will be there to assist us when required. We presented some of our top foodies with their five star Scores on Doors certificates at the Council meeting last week.

This program is a great initiative that rewards excellence in food handling and hygiene. Free sample testing, to find out if your home contains loose-fill asbestos, is currently taking place for owners of pre-1980s residential premises in our area. To register, or for more information, call 13 77 88. Don’t forget our meet and greet night for our new General Manager, Danny Green is on next Wednesday, 3rd August. RSVP for catering purposes by Monday by calling 6850 2361.

Here’s hoping the sun begins to shine and the rain lets up long enough to prevent any further flooding!

Have a great week, stay safe and God bless.

Pymont And Coles Win 4BBB Stroke Champs

July 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Garry Pymont and Geoff Coles were the handicap champions of the 4BBB Stroke Championships last Saturday. The event was carried over from the previous weekend due to bad weather. It was still a battle for the 24 competing pairings as the conditions were described as tougher than walking the Kokoda trail.

Pymont and Coles won with 61 nett, who combined well hole by hole. Runners-up were Peter Barnes and Doug Churchill with 67 nett, on count back from A McDonald/Tony Cogswell. The Stroke winners were S Sallaway/P Dawson with 71, from D Bayley/A Dukes on 73. Saturday’s ball sweep went to 68 nett, on count back, being picked up by 61 – G Pymont/G Coles; 67 – D Churchill/P Barnes, A McDonald/T Cogswell, D Bayley/A Dukes, N and C McMillan; 68 – F Donohue/P Pymont, P Cowhan/P Kay and R Nixon/M Langfield.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – T West; 18th – S Sallaway. There were eight 2’s. The father/ son pairing of Neil and Cameron McMillan scored 2’s on the 1st and 3rd holes.

Sunday’s play was meant to be the Stableford Medley, but tough ground conditions and threatening skies significantly reduced the field. In some results: P Nixon d D Clarke 5/3, D Bayley d F Collie 2/1, A Dukes d T Sharpe 6/5, L O’Connor d M Watts 4/3 and Andy Cogswell d J Zannes on 22nd. Tomorrow is the American Foursomes, and Sunday the Daine Doolin Memorial.

Spectacular Achievement For Forbes High Special Unit

July 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

ForbesHighdonation

Five students of the Forbes High School Support Unit will have a fantastic experience later this year when they become part of the cast for the 2016 Schools Spectacular. Following the success of previous students, Support Unit teacher Lauren Jordan submitted an audition video. She was delighted when they were notified of the success, but not nearly as excited as the five aspiring dancers.

The dancers will now attend rehearsals in preparation for a week long excursion to Sydney where they will rehearse with their specific dance ensemble prior to two matinee and two evening performances at the Qudos Bank Arena at Sydney Olympic Park on Friday, 25th and Saturday, 26th November.

The Schools Spectacular is an outstanding showcase of talent in NSW public schools. The show is unparalleled in the world with a 2,700 strong choir, 2,300 diverse dancers, an 80-piece symphony orchestra, a world-class stage band and a huge number of outstanding solo performers.

This iconic cultural event engages and showcases students of varying ages,
cultures, skills and socioeconomic backgrounds from metropolitan, rural and remote regions of NSW. The Forbes and District Lions Club has shown their support for the Support Unit’s success with a donation of $1, 000 to assist with the costs of accommodation, travel, food and costumes.

Head Teacher, Debra Slack-Smith, recently attended the Lions Club dinner to accept this generous donation on behalf of the class.

White Ribbon ‘Boys Night In’

Forbes High is also in partnership with Forbes Domestic Violence and other organisations showcasing ‘Iceberg’, Kirrily
Dear’s documentary of her ultra-marathon run to raise awareness of domestic violence.

The screening will be at Town Hall from 7.00pm tonight.

“At the Forbes Preschool we celebrate Education Week every day.” According to Amy Shine, Director of the Preschool, “everything we do is play to learn”. The move to the Preschool’s new $1.3 million premises has gone well, and after a term in the beautiful, spacious and light rooms “Everyone is really settled and happy.

Best of all, the kids are really happy here.” With the addition of another room recently, around 150 children come and go over a week. As well as working with a speech therapist, an occupational therapist has also started working with staff and children recently.

An added bonus of the new premises is the community room that is used regularly by many community groups. “It is lovely to see the Preschool support the wider community with lots of different people coming here,” said Amy.

New President Aims To Make Forbes A Major Retail Hub

July 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The new President of the Forbes Business Chamber is Chris Roylance. Chris, who is the Managing Director of Roylance’s Auto One, is taking over from Stuart Thomas who has stepped down after three years as President. Stuart is staying on as a member of the committee.

Chris said one of the main goals of the Chamber would be to promote Forbes as a major regional retail hub in country NSW. Sitting in the President’s chair for a third time, Chris would also like his committee and members to work towards promoting Forbes industry, growing employment opportunities and developing a better retail shopping environment for all customers.

Other goals are to promote and develop more tourism and promote products grown or manufactured in Forbes. “All of this is to be achieved by Forbes businesses working in conjunction with a new and hopefully invigorated Forbes Shire Council,” said Chris. “Forbes businesses have a challenging time ahead but with new technology and improved business practices we will move back to being a major force in country NSW.”

A full committee of ten members was elected at the AGM last week. “We feel this is a great mix of people and we look forward to a continued successful working committee,” said the President. The committee members are Chris Roylance (President), Marg Duggan (Senior Vice President), Stuart Thomas (Past President), Gabe McMillan (Secretary), Kimberly Chudleigh (Treasurer), the Executive: Stevie-leigh Morrison, Jason Hopkins, Ian Bown, Brett Rout and Ben MacKay, and Jill-Ann Borger (Administration). One of the highlights on the Forbes Business Chamber calendar is The Boscars gala event in October. There is an enthusiastic sub committee working hard at the moment to make the event a success.

The Christmas Festival sub committee is also very busy nutting out ideas, making arrangements and setting a date for this year. More details will be announced soon.

The Chamber held a very successful Quarterly Networking Night after the AGM last week. Andrew Rawsthorne, Grants Officer of the Forbes Shire Council, gave a great presentation that was well received.

Young Referee Gains Confidence

July 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

A young indigenous Forbes girl came one step closer to her dream when she was selected to referee at the fourth Nations of Origin Tournament at Raymond Terrace recently. At 15 years of age Shanika Harpur is hard at work to realise a dream of becoming an NRL Referee one day.

As the only representative from Forbes at the tournament held from 12 to 14 July, she honed her refereeing skills and felt her confidence enhanced by the experience. She had to fill in an application and went through a development referee process in order to be picked.

“Bring it on!” was her reaction when she was picked for the Nations of Origin Tournament. The event has been designed to get young Aboriginal and non Aboriginal people involved to promote reconciliation within communities.

Shanika has been a referee for the past two years in the Woodbridge Cup run by the NSW Country Rugby League including all levels of rugby league teams from Burrangong, Canowindra, Cargo, Condobolin, Eugowra, Grenfell, Koorawatha, Manildra, Molong, Peak Hill, Trundle and Woodstock. She attributes her love of refereeing to her Pop, Ron Hocking, who has been a referee for 36 years in Forbes.

Shanika’s next step is to get into the Referees Academy of the Country Rugby League next year to take her performance to the next level. “We are very proud of her,” said Sandra Hocking, Shanika’s Nan and biggest supporter. Shanika said she was getting a lot of support from Willy Barnes of Peak Hill, who is the referee coordinator. “She looks up to him as he has a good attitude with the young ones,” said Sandra.

Our Gal – Sarah Davies

Sarah Davies

How long have you lived in Forbes? I was born and raised in Forbes but spent three years on the Sunshine Coast before returning in 2011.

Where do you work? I am the Customer Experience and Marketing Manager for the Bernardi Group.

What do you do in your free time?
Spend time hanging out with my husband and three kids! And I also publish an online kids interior publication called Minty Magazine (www.mintymagazine.com.au)

How do you like your coffee? Latte with one sugar please!

What makes your day? When the kids say something funny or a day skiing and camping with my family and friends, or getting excellent customer service – it’s the little things that have the biggest impact!

If you could go anywhere in the world on holiday where would it be? Right now life is very busy, so I’d love a quiet villa in Bali to kick back and relax with the family for a while.

Question of the Week?

July 28, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

What would you do if you won $8.8 million?

FayGreen

Fay Green, Forbes North Public School: I would pay off all my debt, set my children up and move to Cooktown in Queesland. We have just bought a property there for the fishing lifestyle. We’d be able to fish for the rest of our lives!

JanelleJackson

Janelle Jackson, KMWL: I’d retire, share some money with my family and friends and go on holiday to Canada to see my family living there.

LorraineAllen

Lorraine Allen, Taxi Driver: The first thing I’d do is to help two of my children who have mortgages to pay it off, and I’d buy a house for my third child who does not own a home at the moment. I wouldn’t have to work again – I’ve been working since I was 16. I have a caravan and I would tour all around Australia. It is the best country in the world!

Run Against Violence: The journey of one woman became the journey of many. The Forbes Domestic Violence Committee invites the community to a screening of Iceberg at 7pm at the Forbes Town Hall tonight. Iceberg follows the journey of Kirrily Dear, who ran 860km from Walgett to Forbes in 2014. Her sole purpose was to break the silence surrounding domestic violence.

Free printmaking workshop: Places are open to participate in a free printmaking workshop in Forbes. The ‘In Print Forbes’ workshops, to be held in August, are a chance for people to learn from expert printmaker Victoria Tuscon Brew, who will lead participants through the printmaking process and help them produce a complete artwork of their own. The workshops will be held over two Thursday’s (11th August and 18th August from 11am to 2pm), and two Saturday’s (20th August and 27th August from 11am to 2pm) at the Northside Chapel Hall in Forbes. Participants will need to be able to attend two workshops – either both Thursday or both Saturday workshops. The workshops are open to all adults or senior high school students. Participants
will generate new artworks for the Forbes Hospital’s art collection and will be asked to donate a print to the Hospital. Bathurstbased Victoria Tuscon Brew is an editioning printmaker – she works with artists to make prints of their works. A graduate of UNSW’s College of Fine Arts, Victoria has over 17 years’ experience. The workshops are free and all materials are provided. Places are limited. To book call Arts OutWest on 6338 4657 or email artsoutwest@csu.edu.au

Western NSW schools on board with a healthy lunch: Primary schools in western NSW are helping the next generation of parents pack healthy lunches for their children to provide students with lifelong cancer prevention benefits. Cancer Council NSW nutrition program Eat It To Beat It delivered 75 Healthy Lunch Box sessions during the Western NSW kindergarten orientation period last year.

Schools are encouraged to get on board for this year’s kindergarten orientation period. The free 25-minute sessions show parents how easy it can be to pack a healthy lunch box every day. Each family gets a free show bag filled with great resources, including a hands-on Healthy Lunch Box Kit. Western NSW Community Programs Coordinator, Fiona Markwick said including fruit and vegetables in the lunch box was an easy step towards eating the recommended two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day.

“Schools tell us that many lunch boxes still contain a lot of packaged foods,” Fiona said. To find out more or to register interest for a Healthy Lunch Box session, go to eatittobeatit.com.au or contact Fiona Markwick on 02 6392 0803 or email fionam@nswcc.org.au
