Jobs In The Central West

February 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Jobs In The Central West is a convenient and simple way to advertise staff vacancies, or find that perfect position.

Jobs In The Central West takes a lot of the stress out of the re- cruitment and job finding process. This new service operates on Facebook thus allowing employers to reach more people via social media. With 15 million Facebook users in Australia, it is a great tool of choice for easy reach.

There are already nearly 1,500 likes on the page, with the num- bers climbing every week. Jobseekers can instantly see positions vacant ads in their feed, or even be tagged by a mate. What’s more, it’s local – so there’s no trawling through national ads.

Jobseekers can “like” the page, and instantly see locally adver- tised jobs. Advertisers get a great package, and a one-stop, cost effective solution. For more information contact sarah.maynard@ inxcess.com.au or call 6344 1846.

Trash & Treasure Trails

February 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Autumn is the perfect time to hold a garage sale, and The Forbes Phoenix is here to help. Garage sales are an easy way to transform trash into treasure. Selling unwanted items also eases the burden on the environment, allowing people to reuse and recycle goods.

What to do? Collect all the unwanted items from your house, and figure out a price. A general guide is to ask 25 to 35% of what it cost new. Clothes sell for about 5 to 10% of the original cost. Place any free items towards the back, so buyers see your priced items first. Make sure you have enough change and plastic bags to give to buyers.

Advertise your sale in the Phoenix Trash & Treasure Trails to let over 2,000 readers know where to bag a bargain. For a quote contact Sylvie Maloney on 0490 517 590 or email sales@parkes- phoenix.com.au

Mayoral Notes

February 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

As discussed last week, Council’s new Section 355 Committee structure is in place. At last Thursday’s Council meeting we elected the Chairs of the five committees. This week I will focus on the Natural Environment Committee. Its purpose is to support Council by recommending programs, pro- jects or actions that have the potential to progress the Community Strategic Plan in relation to protecting the environment and achieving effective land use planning, in the interest of the Forbes community. Council- lor Jeff Nicholson was elected the Chair of this committee and Councillor Grant Clifton is also a representative of this committee.

I have fielded a number of questions regarding some of the roads that are still damaged due to the floods last year. All roads have been inspected by the Shire and works will continue on a priority basis on flood damaged roads. Some of the work is also awaiting funding allocation by RMS. Council is very appreciative of your patience and our crews are doing a great job on the repairs.

At last week’s Council meeting, the new Community Funding Program Policy was approved. This new policy will allow equitable distribution of Council’s annual donation’s allocation and we will be calling for applications for the funding shortly.

Council will be meeting with all real estate agents in the near future to assess the needs of accommodation and housing in Forbes. This will help us to look at what is needed in the Forbes Shire in regards to accommodation and housing.

What A Right Royal Surprise!

February 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Best friends will do a lot for each other, but this week Gillian Davis had the surprise of a lifetime for her friend Lee Reynolds.

She astonished Lee in front of every- one at the College for Seniors meeting on Tuesday with a letter from Queen Elizabeth II. Gillian had written to the Queen and in- cluded Lee’s poems she had written in the Queen’s honour. One of Lee’s poems sent to the Queen was in honour of her 90th birthday and the other on the passing of the Queen’s mother.

“I feel humbled, totally overwhelmed,” said an emotional Lee holding the Queen’s letter.

Gillian read the Queen’s letter in which she com- mended both Lee and her husband Lachlan by acknowledging the 2016 Rotary Ipomoea’s annual community service award they had received for their community service over many decades. The Queen also thanked Lee for her poems and de- scribed them as ‘delightful works.’

“Lee is so clever. She is always writing poems,” said Gillian. “We call it scribbling because she always writes on used envelopes.”

Lee’s response was: “I might get up at 2 o’clock in the morning to write something. My mother wrote books, so something must have trickled down to me.”

Gillian was ecstatic. “Now Lee’s talent and scribblings have been acknowledged by royalty!”

An extensive lunch menu provides a selection of wraps and salads, a tempting array of cakes and pastries; the perfect complement to barista made coffee or loose-leaf tea.

The event is run by the Australian Formula Jet Sprint Association, and will feature boats in three classes-the 350 class, 400 class, and unlimited class. The V8 group A 400 and 350 classes of jet-sprinting have engines that are mildly restricted to ensure a reasonably equitable playing field for all competitors. The V8 unlimited class fea- tures top class superboats of racing in jet- sprinting with the boats being unrestricted except for a minimum engine size and con- trolled methanol fuel. V8 Superboat En- gines are unrestricted and vary depending on the design concept behind them. The event kicks off on March the 4th at 3pm. Tickets are $25 adult, kids $5, family pass (2 kids, 2 adults) $50. Tickets can be pur- chased online or at the gate.

After exploring the town you simply can’t leave without taking in the rich history of the community as you visit the town’s museums, Temora Rural Museum and Temora Aviation Museum.

One of Temora’s popular tourist attractions is the Rural Museum and Ambulance Museum. The museums main annual exhibition is on the second Saturday of March each year, with this year’s 44th annual exhibition coming up very soon on March 11th. Come delve into history with a beautifully presented showcase of Australia’s changing country living.

Arguably Temora’s top attraction is the Temora Aviation Museum, and this comes from the town’s rich aviation history. It hosted Australia’s largest Royal Australian Air Force aviation school during World War II, with more than 10,000 personnel on site and 2,400 pilots trained. At it’s peak the fa- cility held 97 of the famous Tiger Moth air- craft, and ceased operation in 1946. Aviation activities such as gliding, parachuting, aerobatics, ultra-light aircraft operations and model aircraft displays are still held in town. The Museum is located next door to the airport on Tom Moon Avenue, north of the town centre, off Airport Street. It has a number of permanent exhibits including ‘Unsung Heroes’, ‘The History of the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation’, ‘The Magic of Flight’, and ‘CAC Sabre’. The museum offers guided tours with volunteers, audio-visual presentations, a theatre, engineer viewing, a gift shop, playground, garden and picnic areas, and the ‘Aircraft Showcase’. The Museum is open daily between 10am and 4pm.

Shin Splints

February 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

With summer sports winding up and pre- season training for winter sports commencing, it is not surprising that today I saw my first case of shin splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome), for this year.

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) is the medical name for lower leg pain that occurs below the knee on either the front outside part of the leg (anterior shin splints) or the inside of the leg (medial shin splints). MTTS is a common injury seen in many running or jumping based sports for exam- ple, basketball, netball, football or hockey.

Shin splints most commonly occur when repetitive or prolonged activities place strain on where the muscles attach to the outside lining of the bone (tenoperioste- um). Put simply, the cause of MTTS can be summed up in four words: too much too soon. Athletes often first experience shin pain early in the season due to decondi- tioning and when training surfaces are gen- erally harder. Later in the season it can be caused by increased load or fatigue from over training and not allowing enough time for recovery between activities.

If you have shin splints stretch your calf muscles regularly through the day. Another good stretch is to kneel on a carpeted floor with your legs and feet together and toes pointed directly back then slowly sit back onto your heels, pushing your ankles onto the floor until you feel tension in the mus- cles in your shin. Hold for 15 seconds then relax and repeat. When you return to sport, increase your load slowly and avoid run- ning on hills and hard surfaces until your pain goes completely.

Bedgerabong School Small, But Packs A Punch

February 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Despite the major disruption to school routines during the floods last year, the students of Bedgerabong School continued to shine.

Achievements in 2016 include: individual and team representation at NSW level in four sports, award winners at the Cowra and Forbes Eisteddfod, CWA public speak- ing and cooking honours, University of NSW competition awards and a sell-out performance at the Sydney Opera House as part of the NSW Small Schools Marimba Ensemble.

There are three classes at Bedgerabong this year with eight new kindergarten stu- dents: Kindie-Yr 2, Yr 3-4 and Yr 5-6 with small numbers in each class.

This year will maintain its focus on suc- cessful and enjoyable programs, such as the Get Yourself Moving (GYM) featuring circus arts and gymnastics. This includes unicycling, stilt walking, acrobatics, clown- ing and much more. It is a wonderful student engagement success story with students eagerly awaiting Thursdays to work on mas- tering their circus skills. The performing arts, Marimba, and kitchen garden, Tootie Fruity, programs will also be high on the kids to-do lists.

The technology program ensures one to one iPad usage from years one to six. The morning reading program, well supported by parents and community members, and the Community Connections program will continue this year, as well as the FISH Phi- losophy. It is a belief system with four simple goals to make Bedgerabong School a great place to be: Choose Your Attitude, Make Someone’s Day, Be There and be Playful.

“We look forward to another industrious year full of new challenges and commitment to maintaining and achieving the high stand- ards we are accustomed to, after all… small schools are great schools!” said Principal, Paul Faulkner. Visit the school in person or on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
