New Showroom Expands Business

March 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Midpro has continued to expand over the years and the latest addition is a showroom and retail shop that opened just before Christmas last year.

“We felt there was a need for this, not only to service our own business by having enough items in stock for breakdowns, but also to give customers quick access to what they need,” said Bart.

The well-stocked showroom at the Midpro premises has everything from couplings, pumps, sprinklers, trailer parts, pulleys, gearboxes, drive shafts, nuts and bolts, wheels and rims, belts, a full range of hydraulic fittings and much more.

“This new addition to our business has been welcomed by many people,” said Bart. “They are pleasantly surprised by the amount and variety of our stock on hand.”

Bart said the shop meant people could walk in and out to get a job done much quicker. “Should we not have the item you are looking for, we are happy to source it for you.”

While keeping up to date with customers’ needs, the Midpro team also moved along with advances in technology. “Technology has changed a lot over the years. It has literally shaped our business and makes it more enjoyable.”

Midpro acquired extensive CAD drawing programs on computer to be able to give customers a more realistic picture of what they will build for them.

“Technology is what makes our work more enjoyable. The fact that we are able to see a job from a rough sketch on a piece of paper to designing it on computer and then manufacturing it in the workshop is very rewarding.”

We have another bumper edition of 16 pages this week celebrating amazing women, a silver anniversary, new technology and life in Forbes.

Seniors Week starts today and we were very fortunate to meet an extraordinary woman. Please read our Reporter, Dianne Collie’s story about Rene Francis on our front page and feel inspired. There is also a full program of events for the Forbes Seniors Festival on page 11.

The inspiring woman who took the brave step to start the Phoe- nix Group of Newspapers (including the Forbes Phoenix), Cheryl Newsom, has decided it was time to hand over the reins. Read her story on page 4.

Midpro, an independent Forbes business, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Read about they joy Bart and his team find in technol- ogy on page 8 to 10.

The Forbes barefooters did the town proud at last weekend’s big event, while the Forbes Aquatic Centre impressed many visitors.

With the cooler weather taking some pressure off us, we can make time this weekend to be thankful for the many blessing we have. Let’s be grateful for grandparents and what we can learn from them.

Calling All Forbes Women To Celebrate International Women’s Day

March 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

This year Forbes women are invited to celebrate International Women’s Day on Wednesday with a buffet breakfast on the lake.

The breakfast celebrations in Forbes on the beautiful Lake Forbes foreshore will feature entertainment from talented young local, Maddi Collits. There will also be talks from a McGrath Foundation breast cancer nurse, Di Green, and the Forbes Business Chamber’s, Marg Duggan.

“Our women contribute so much to every aspect of life from business to volunteer- ing and everything in between,” said Mayor Graeme Miller.

“It’s fantastic to have a day where we can pause and acknowledge that contribution.” The day will also raise funds for two

important women’s causes, namely the McGrath Foundation and the Forbes Wid- ows Support Group.

Raffles will be held and donation tins available. Funds raised will be donated towards efforts to fight breast cancer and support widows in the Forbes community.

Menu options include bacon, eggs, fruit, yoghurt, muesli and pancakes. Tea and coffee will also be available.

The breakfast will be held at the Lions Park from 7.30am on Wednesday, 8th March. For catering purposes, bookings are essential.

Tickets at $10 are available from Forbes Shire Council’s administration office until close of business Monday, 6th March.

International Women’s Day is held annu- ally to celebrate the achievements of wom- en and to strive for gender equality.

This year’s theme is #BeBoldForChange and aims to encourage all of us to do all we can to accelerate gender parity and to help forge a better working world – a more inclusive, gender equal world.

Mayoral Notes

March 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

By all accounts last week’s Barefoot Skiing Tournament was very successful with over 40 participants with many locals taking part. Show skiing and fly board demonstrations proved particularly popular.

This week I visited St Laurence’s Parish School and Forbes North Public School to hand out reusable water bottles. This initiative will encourage young people to take advantage of Forbes’ terrific drinking water and to discourage the purchase of bottled water. Most disposable water bottles end up in landfill and shorten the lives of rubbish tips, not to mention the fact that the bottling and transportation of water is extremely damaging to the environment. Eventually all Forbes Shire primary school students will receive an environmentally friendly, reusable water bottle.

While at Forbes North Public School I was able to sit in on the student parliament. They were undertaking a very similar process to council with its Community Strategic Plan. It was great to see our next generation of leaders developing their plans for the year.

Forbes North is celebrating their 60th birthday tomorrow and is holding a fair in- cluding a variety of stalls, rides, food and drink, birthday cake and school tours. This is a great opportunity for former students to go and see how much the school has changed and developed.

The Forbes Seniors Festival starts on Sunday with a variety concert in the Town Hall at 2pm. Seven talented local acts will perform. Entry by gold coin donation.

Midpro Can Do Just About Anything

March 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

It has been 25 years of continuous growth and expansion for Midpro Engineering & Irrigation.

Ian Bartholomaeus, better known as Bart, started the business when he returned to Forbes after a couple of years away in 1992, after some time away gaining experience and knowledge.

“We were only two people in the begin- ning and today we have more than 20 staff members. We fill a need in the local indus- trial and agricultural sectors, as well as a bit in the mining and transportation industries too.”

As of ten years ago, irrigation has be- come a big part of the business. “We are an engineering firm and has the ability to

design, manufacture and install just about anything. No job is too big or too small for us – from domestic needs to commercial projects, from a brainstorm to a thunder- storm,” said Bart.

Bart is also a big advocate for the train- ing of apprentices. “We have had more than 60 apprentices work with us over 25 years, mostly in the fitting and machining and metal fabrication trades.”

After 25 years Bart is proud on what Mid- pro has become: “We have a reputation as an inventive business, we are great at problem solving and with a fully equipped workshop there is not much we can’t do and aren’t able to accomplish.”

The Low Down On Low E Glass

March 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

In The Central West we have a great climate for at least six months of the year. So in autumn and spring we don’t need to be too con- cerned with temperature extremes. On the other hand, our sum- mers can get very warm and our winters rather cold. Experience has shown the experts at the Glassplace that Low E grey tinted glass performs well in both summer and winter.

How does Low E tinted glass work? (Other names are smart glass, pyrolytic glass, or comfort glass.) Low E grey glass cuts down the U value of a window or door. This is the amount of heat moving through the glass due to the difference in temperature: from the inside to the outside of your home, or office. Low E glass can therefore reduce your heating bill and your cooling costs.

Low E grey glass also reduces the total solar radiation com- ing through the glass. This is the Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient or SHGC. It also reduces glare to make your home more comfortable in summer. The lower the numbers, the more benefit you will get from Low E glass.

If you still feel a bit confused about this glass, but want to know more, why not drop into the new Glassplace showroom in Clarke Street, Parkes. They will show you examples of Low E Glass in full sized windows so you can see what it looks like. You can also have a go at their ra- diant heat display to actually feel the difference Low E glass can Low E grey tinted glass performs well in hot and cold make in your home. conditions and can help to make the extreme seasons Give them a call today!

Warroo Has Crossed The Digital Divide

March 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Mobile technology has come to Warroo making it possible now to contact emer- gency services, call home or even send a selfie!

A new mobile phone tower was launched at Warroo (almost 50km west of Forbes) last Friday to improve mobile phone coverage in the area.

Minister for Small Business and member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, said at the launch: “After lobbying by the local com- munity and the former local member John Cobb, this tower was able to be delivered under Round 1 of the Federal Government Mobile Black Spot Program.”

An investment of $100 million for Round 1 will deliver more than 500 new mobile base stations in regional and remote areas.

“It’s great to hear first-hand from the local community about the benefits of this tower to the villages, farmers and local residents,” said Michael. Even more so because it supports the Rural Fire Service and other emergency services, enabling them to be contacted and connected to each other when travelling through this area and at- tending to emergency situations.

Telstra Countrywide Area General Manager, Chris Taylor agreed: “Expanding coverage to the regions ensures locals can keep in contact with family and friends and run their businesses more effectively.”

There was no ball sweep but the NTP’s were awarded to: 9th – B Carpenter; 18th – R Hey (Parkes).

Last Sunday, Forbes teams once again sallied forth in this year’s CWDGA Pennants at the Parkes Golf Club.

The Division 1 team was sadly out of form, losing to Cowra 4/1. The Division 2 team had a 3/2 win over Duntryleague. The Division 3 team lost to Cowra 3/2.

The Division 4 team has made it to the semi-finals with a good 3/2 win over Cowra. Richard Smith, S French and S Grallelis had wins. T Howe was unlucky to lose and F Hannes battled well.

Must Do Autumn Jobs At Home

March 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Autumn is always the best time to get plen- ty of jobs done before the cold weather ar- rives.
1. Take a pen and notebook and stroll around your garden. Write a list of jobs that need doing.

  1. Repair, paint or tidy any garden furniture. Some may need painting, or cov- ering up for winter. Put away outdoor toys and paddling pools. Throw away anything old and not able to be repaired.
  2. Check your heating source. If you have a fire, you need to get wood and stack it. Your indoor heaters may need cleaning or servicing.
  3. Autumn is the best time to paint. The house can still be aired out in the day- time and it’s pleasant weather to put in the work.

5. New trees. Autumn is a great time to

plant new trees. If you drive a car, you should be planting seven new trees per year, to offset the carbon.

6. Clean out all gutters and tend to possible roof leaks. Late autumn is best, after all the leaves have fallen.

7. Sort and tidy your wardrobe. Before you put away your summer clothes and footwear, have a good look at what you didn’t wear this summer and toss them in the charity bag.

8. Children will be spending more time indoors. They are now a year older, so take a look at their bedroom, and ask them what they need.
