What’s Hot

April 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Graham Carson was awarded Best Car in the Concourse for his Armstrong Siddeley in Forbes last Saturday. Locals were de- lighted to be able to inspect and discuss these elegant cars with members who met in Forbes for their 50th anniversary rally. The Armstrong Siddeleys were hand built in England from 1919 to 1960.

To Hell And Back

April 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Brothers 4 Recovery were in Forbes last week with their inspirational yet spine chilling message.

The honesty of Ed Daley, Steve Morris and Jeff Amatta is beyond brave as all three men have been to hell and back with alcohol, drugs and gambling addictions.

As clean and sober men their mission now is to empower communities and youth to implement the tools to recovery.

Ed’s message is don’t waste your life! He said it was dancing that helped in his recovery. “I needed it for my soul.” Ed completed Certificate IV Community Service and is working as a support worker.

Steve who is ashamed his addiction led him to “lie and steal to feed my filthy habit”. He challenged everyone to “find that why in your life.”

“I turned into the man I didn’t want to be,” said Jeff. “I started drinking very young and before I knew it I was injecting even though I feared needles.” His advice was to con- centrate on education and be with positive people.

In the words of Brothers 4 Recovery: “If we want a good life we need to do good things.”

Paddles Up For Regatta Season

March 30, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Dragon boating is a wonderful sport. You can paddle for fun, fitness and friendship – or you can train seriously for the regatta team, or try out to join the state team. You can paddle in interstate events, or even in other countries. You can join any regatta with or without the
rest of your team, which is just what Bill and Beth Thomas of the Forbes Lachlan Dragons did last Sunday.

Nowra Water Dragons were holding their annual regatta on the stunning Shoalhaven River, and Bill and Beth joined the 250 competitors
from community and sports teams for a great day of friendly competition. The Nowra regatta offered an added bonus for Bill who had just attained his level 2 sweep accreditation. The sweep steers the boat and is accountable for the crew. He was able to carry out this task with great aplomb on the untried tidal river of Shoalhaven.

A waterway quite different to what he is accustomed, but he did an incredible job – sweeping his team to two first places in heats and a second in the finals. Bill needs to complete one more regatta to be fully qualified and will take part in the Orange Regatta with the Forbes Lachlan Dragons later in the year. The Forbes Lachlan Dragons, with members from Parkes and Eugowra region, value teamwork, passion, achievement and friendship. If you’d like to find out more about dragon boating or the club, find us on Facebook.

We are based at Lake Forbes, behind the Sport and Rec Club in Lachlan Street. We would love to see you come along on Sunday mornings at 8:15, and 6:15 Thursday evenings in daylight-saving time.

People Our Passion

March 30, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Neighbourhood Central’s motto is: People our passion – service our strength, and the Forbes branch is living it every day. “Our aim is for our clients to remain independent, at home and to provide them with a choice of opportunities,” said Monica Wren, administrator of the Forbes office. “We can assist with transport either to attend medical appointments, social events or do shopping. Trips may be subsidised depending on eligibility and some taxi vouchers are available,” said Monica.

“We are very proud of our new Hyundai people mover and everyone is delighted. Our previous vehicle seated four – we can now comfortably seat seven!” More than 25 people volunteer as drivers, client support in transit and for library deliveries. “Thank you just never seems
enough for our volunteers. They are such kind, selfless people who make the world a better place to live in. I’m so proud of them all,” said Monica.

Neighbourhood Central also assists with delivering reading material from the library, offering craft group activities, as well as opportunities to socialise. “We hold a range of social events, including a monthly morning tea where 40 or more people regularly enjoy a chat and guest speakers.” The Morning Magpies craft group is currently at capacity, but an additional group is being organised, according to Monica.
For all bookings and enquiries call Monica or Lauren on 6851 4550 between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday.

Our Gal – Linda Reilly

March 30, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Linda Reilly

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work at Forbes Physiotherapy and Sports Injuries Centre and have for 10 years. I meet a diverse range of people and enjoy the challenge of helping them regain their fitness.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? I enjoy dragon boating, watching my kids play sport (their rugby starts this weekend) and if there is time, some reading.

What are you really good at? I am good at being a sports physio because I enjoy the challenge of studying and then applying the latest medical research to help people get better quicker.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Did you know that the mind actually controls pain? Therefore, it would be great if I could read people’s minds so I would be able to understand this better.

What is your pet hate? Hypocrites, judgmental people and mouth breathers.

Bizkeys: The Police respond to crimes at all times. Sometimes businesses are subjected to crimes when they are closed. The NSW Police Force maintains a confidential and secure database, called Bizkeys, where business owners supply a list of key holders with contact details. It is an important and very useful tool if say for example, a window of a business premises is broken at night, the police can ring so the business can be secured again. Business owners are encouraged to contact the Crime Prevention Officer for the Lachlan Local Area Command, Senior Constable Daniel Greef, on 6862 9936 or gree1dan@police.nsw.gov.au for a business keyholder form.

Skywriters: Writers and aspiring writers are invited to join the Big Skies Collaboration Skywriters project to author stories, in any genre, about their own or other people’s relationships with celestial phenomena in our southern sky. Skywriters Hub will be launched at the Forbes Library on Thursday, 6th April at 1pm. The Skywriters Project is led by Forbes-based author and scholar Dr Merrill Findlay. Participation is free, and anyone with an interest in writing or storytelling is invited to take part. Sign up at the Forbes Library or at bigskiescollaboration.wordpress.com/projects/skywriters/

Forbes Business Chamber: At the March monthly meeting, Sally Duff represented the Forbes Shire Council to work on strengthening a productive relationship between the chamber and council. The first social media workshop was very successful and well attended, while some fantastic social media ideas are coming through from the youngest committee member Stevie-Leigh Morrison including a business of
the week and regular Instagram post.

Poultry auction: Sam Mackay’s auction last Sunday attracted a huge crowd with 1,058 head of poultry and 128 registered buyers! Not bad for a 15-year-old!

#MONTEfamousreview: Bel – Melancholia, Twenty one year old Melbourne musician Bel, has released a beautiful dark electro pop EP named Melancholia. Written with the premise: There is a beauty in sadness and what would happen if we embraced darkness similarly to how we embrace the light? Building on this idea Bel used her lyrical writing skills and talent for creating beautiful melodies to produce an
EP that will sweep you into a new world of emotion and thought. It is a stunning example of the dark electro pop genre.

Turn The Tap On; Save Money And The Environment!

March 30, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Council’s initiative to encourage young people to drink tap water instead of buying bottled water has reached all the schools in the shire. In the late 1980s when Australia was introduced to buying bottled water, many people thought it was a big joke. Who would be
so silly to buy bottled water when you can drink it for free from the bubbler, or fill up your glass or trusty drink bottle from the tap?

Well marketing triumphed and unfortunately today we continue to buy bottled water in droves. But not in Forbes! All primary students received a reusable water bottle as Mayor Graeme Miller did the rounds and visited the final school last Wednesday. Forbes Public School Principal, Dafydd Thomas said: “We are grateful to Forbes Shire Council for providing this sustainable initiative as it supports the students learning and understanding of the importance of recycling to reduce landfill. All 300 students were given an environmentally friendly, reusable water bottle.”

Students answering a question from The Forbes Phoenix were all aware of the vast number of disposable water bottles ending up in landfill and its negative effect on the environment. Australians purchase about 118,000 tonnes of plastic drink bottles a year, but only recycle 35 per cent of them. The 76,700 tonnes left behind either goes to landfill or ends up as rubbish. In addition the cost of bottled water is exorbitant with Australia alone using more than 300,000 barrels of oil a year to make PET bottles.

Add the cost of transport, and the amount spent on buying bottled water, while it is possible to get the same product virtually free from a tap. Isn’t it time you follow the lead of the students and make bottled water a thing of the past?

A Sight For Sore Eyes

March 30, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Fiona Hayward, Owner/Manager of Eyewear Specs, opened the doors at 95 Rankin Street in February 2016. “It is so wonderful to see people wearing our glasses and loving them,” said Fiona. “Word of mouth has been a large part of our business success.” It has been so successful that they will be expanding the business to employ a graduate optometrist in the future.

Eyewear Specs also doubles as a mobile optometrist. “We basically pack up shop and move to a location where we’re needed,” said Fiona. “We have worked from Jemalong Residential Village, and travelled to Condobolin, Grenfell, Parkes and Eugowra. We will be working in Canowindra soon following a community request, and we also offer a school screening service.” “Eye care is very important and it is essential that people have their eyes tested every two years. Here at Eyewear Specs there is no cost to you for an eye examination as we Bulk Bill all testing with a valid Medicare Card.”

According to Fiona they offer up to 260 different eye frames and all stock is rotated every three months so you can be sure to pick an individual frame. “We also offer two pairs of glasses for the price of one.” The most popular brand for children and adults are Flexon/Nike. “To see what these glasses can do is nothing but extraordinary. They are made of titanium so they are ultra-strong and flexible,” said Fiona. “That is why they are perfect for children and any form of rural and manufacturing work.

“Please come and see us to have your eyes tested and we will tailor a pair of glasses to suit your individual financial budget.” Fiona said they also worked with Vision Care and Aboriginal Support.
