Going From Strength To Strength

November 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Nathan Steele started providing ICT services to a select group of clients around the local area 10 years ago. With his vast knowledge and education in the IT field, he experienced a growth in customers and a higher demand for these specialized services, and as a result, Steele Technology was formed.

With the increase in clients, Nathan extended to operating as a full-time business in 2014, trading in a purpose made office at home. Within 6 months he hired his first staff member, Nicholas Mahlo. As the demand for Steele Technology’s services grew, so did the business. In 2016 Nathan upgraded the office space to a larger facility, as more staff came on board.

Eventually, the need for larger premises became a necessity. In late 2017, the move to their current shopfront at 126 Lachlan Street, Forbes, was completed. Now, with a team of 7 and counting, Steele Technology aims to maintain the highest levels of customer service, while striving to place itself at the forefront of providing the latest technology and ICT services available.

From the very beginning, Nathan envisioned providing a one stop shop for everything IT, and he believes that they are very close to meeting that goal.

Currently Steele Technology offer a variety of ICT services, including residential sales and support, repairs, web design, email and web hosting, internet connections, and business support.

Steele Technology is thankful to all of their valued customers for the support they have shown throughout the years, and look forward to continuing to improve on the services they provide to the local community. Nathan personally thanks his awesome team, friends and family who have put in a huge amount of work to help get the new shop ready so quickly. He is also especially thankful to his wife Noami, for not divorcing him during the process!

Being Brave For The Greatest Shave

November 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Carmen Spry signed up to make drastic changes to her appearance with the aim of raising funds for The World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation. On Thursday, 14th December at 2.30pm in the St Laurence’s School hall in Forbes, Carmen will be shaving her beautiful long dark hair to help beat blood cancer. “My inspiration for doing this came from the amazing Garland girls. Especially after Scarlett Garland shaved her hair earlier this year in support of her little sister Ava, which is still undergoing treatment for Leukaemia.

“I decided to throw my hat in the ring and raise some much needed funds for families facing the diagnosis of leukaemia. Being a mother is by far my most loved and important role, and I want to support other mothers (and fathers and brothers and sisters) in their most challenging times. I have quite long hair so it’s a pretty big call to shave it off,” said Carmen.

As part of her fundraising, Carmen has held a cooking party, Bunnings barbeque, cake stall and morning tea. An ongoing raffle will also be drawn on the day of the shave. Her initial goal was to raise $2,000 but Carmen’s commitment and passion for the cause has allowed her to already raise more than $5,000.

Students and staff at St Laurence’s School where Carmen is a teacher, have supported and helped Carmen with her fundraising. Go to worldsgreatestshave.com and search Carmen Spry to donate to her page.

Forbes Preschool Performs With A Purpose

November 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Preschool held their annual year end performance on Thursday at the school. The children and staff had been practicing very hard for the Preschool’s Got Talent show. Finally, the big day arrived and eight groups of enthusiastic children got to show off their hard work in front of three special guest judges.

The children were adorable as they performed a combination of singing, dancing and musical instruments. There were even some ‘look-a-likes’ with one performer dressing up as Mayor Graeme Miller, another dressed up as Amy Shine, the director of Forbes Preschool and one as Preschool President, Chenoa Sanderson.

After the amazing performances, everyone was crowned a winner and could enjoy the big celebration. Each of the students happily joined their families to enjoy a tasty sausage sizzle.

This year the preschool decided to donate all the proceeds of the event to the Ronald McDonald House. “The reason why we have decided to donate to them is because we have a number of children that have used the house lately and statistics show that Forbes has a high rate of usage,” said Amy.

Ava Garland and also some other children attending Forbes Preschool have had to make use of the Ronald McDonald House. Thanks go to Bernardi’s for organising all drinks and bread for the event.

Queen’s Baton Relay Comes To Life With Street-Level Detail Announcement

November 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Australians can begin planning their Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) experience with the street-level detail and community celebrations now available to explore at gc2018.com/qbr.

People can now see where the Relay will travel, which streets will be lined with crowds, and the celebration dates to mark in their calendars across the 100-day journey in Australia leading up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).

After travelling an astonishing 288 days throughout the Commonwealth, the Queen’s Baton will arrive onto Australian soil in Brisbane on 24th December 2017, having shared the dream of GC2018 with over one third of the world’s population.

From its arrival until 24th January 2018, the Queen’s Baton will engage with thousands of Australians at popular summertime events, iconic locations and children’s hospitals around the country, starting in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

The Queen’s Baton will scale Sydney Harbour Bridge, celebrate the Taste of Tasmania festival, be a part of the tennis action in Perth and Brisbane, hit the roads at the Tour Down Under in South Australia and respect the magic that is Uluru at sunset.

From 25th January 2018, the QBR will shift gears to a more traditional relay starting in Canberra, where the Queen’s Baton will join Australia Day celebrations, before continuing in the hands of approximately 3,800 batonbearers through every state and territory.
As the Queen’s Baton travels the length and breadth of Australia, it will not just pass through, but spend quality time in the communities it visits, calling into hundreds of local schools and community celebrations along the way.

The Queen’s Baton will arrive on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 4th April 2018, where His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales will remove Her Majesty’s message and read it aloud to declare the Games officially open.

Our Gal – Anne Stewart

November 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Anne Stewart

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Forbes for 13 years.

Is that lucky or unlucky? I think it’s lucky! I love the rural life. I love walking around our lake and the activities that happen there.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I have been retired for two years and I love it! So much to do and not enough hours in the day!

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? My life is one long weekend. I love to travel and my passion is researching and planning our next holiday. I love to socialise and am up for a get together anytime.

What are you really good at? I am good at organising, planning and spending money… haha!

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would get rid of dishonest and cruel governments across the world!

What is your pet hate? Poor diction, poor grammar and “Oh my Gawd”.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. I’ve had lots of great holidays, but the best was a cruise to the Pacific Islands over Christmas with my husband, children and grandchildren. It was the most memorable and best time ever.

Free Workshop Helping Learner Drivers

November 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Parents and supervisors of local learner drivers are encouraged to attend a free workshop which will be held at Forbes High School on
Wednesday, 29th November. The free two hour workshop, Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers, will offer parents and supervisors hands-on advice on how to provide the most effective driving practice for learner drivers.

Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, who is presenting the workshop says it is well worth
attending. “Parents and supervisors of learner drivers have a crucial role to play in making our roads safer. That is why Forbes Shire Council have teamed up with Roads and Maritime Services to hold these free two hour workshops to offer practical advice to parents and
supervisors on how to help learner drivers become safer drivers.

“The workshop covers the changes to the licensing system that came into effect 20th November 2017, how to use the Learner Driver Logbook including the use of digital logbooks, licence conditions for learner and P-plate drivers, the benefits of on-road driving sessions,
tips on supervising a learner driver and more.

“Parents and supervisors who have attended this workshop in the past have found that it boosted their confidence, helped them better plan driving sessions and allowed them to share their experiences with other parents and supervisors,” said Melanie.

The Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshop will be held at Forbes High School on Wednesday, 29th November commencing at 6pm. Light refreshments will be available during the workshop. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling Melanie on (02) 6861 2364. For further information please call Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, on (02) 6861 2364.

Calling All Golfers: Golfers are encouraged to sign up for The Longest Day, a 72-hole golf marathon, to raise funds for Cancer Council NSW. The Longest Day will officially take place on Monday 18th December, but participants can hold their event at their local golf club anytime during December. Participants are challenged to play four rounds of golf in one day at their own club with their friends and fellow members. Choose a day and contact your club to book four tee times, then head to www.longestday.org.au to register and start fundraising.

Skin Cancer Action Week: In NSW alone, 17% of adults admit to having been burnt on summer weekends. This is an estimated number of 881,000 people. This year, everyone is invited (in particular adults) to join the #SunSmartGeneration this National Skin Cancer Action Week.

Firearms Legislation Changes: There have been recent changes to the requirements in relation to the safekeeping of firearms. These changes relate to the storage of firearms and the location at which they are stored. You are now required to store your firearms at your primary residential premises. In simple terms, your primary residence is the address where you most often reside. This change in legislation comes because of a significant amount of firearms thefts from rural properties while those properties are unattended. Police
are asking that firearms owners make changes to their storage arrangements immediately to comply with these changes to the legislation.

Rotary Ipomoea Christmas Tree Festival: Anyone can get involved in designing and creating a Christmas tree of any shape or material that reflects their love of Christmas time. Members of the community are invited to the official opening of the festival on 1st December at 6pm, which will see the trees light up. Enter a tree by phoning Helen on 6851 4930 or Sue-anne on 6851 5197, or send an email to sueanne.nixon@hotmail.com. Entry fee is $5. Anyone can enter any type of tree.

Forbes Public School Market: For the third year running, the market has tripled in size. Lots to do. Live local entertainment, kids zone, pony rides, face paint and much more. Taking place on Saturday, 2nd December from 9am to 2pm in Lachlan Street. Everyone is welcome to join in for a fun filled shopping family day.

Mayoral Notes…

November 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The General Manager and I attended the CENTROC regional meeting this week to discuss the Draft Future Transport Strategy 2056. On the whole we were disappointed with the connectivity to Sydney and will be expressing this in a submission from CENTROC. The draft document is also available online for further public comment at future.transport.nsw.gov.au.

Earlier this week, I had the great pleasure, along with Deputy Mayor Jenny Webb and Councillors Jeff Nicholson and Phyllis Miller, to personally thank the amazing volunteers from the Visitor Information Centre for their many hours promoting and informing visitors about our town.

Council had a very interesting update by Matt Clifton about Vanfest at last week’s Council meeting. Ticket sales are tracking well and hopefully will exceed our expectations. Council also heard a presentation from Monique Pointon, the energetic and enterprising proprietor of the Sweet Three Vintage Van located at Lion’s Park. After driving past last weekend and seeing about 40 cars in the area, she seems to be catering to a new market and Council will be reviewing our policy for businesses to operate on crown land and parks.

Manager Jason Grieve from Evolution Mining spoke at the Council meeting and while announcing an expansion for the mine, he also discussed its new commitment through $150,000 worth of community grants. As well as $500,000 over three years for the sculpture trail. It is very encouraging to see as they grow so too does their commitment and support for our community.

Netball News

November 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Spring Night competition finals will be played next week, 29th November. The finals will be played between the two top teams on the point score ladders. If the finals are cancelled due to rain, the teams that finished first on the ladder will be declared the winners.

There will be new forms available for netball to be played in 2018. Both Fast 5 and Walking Netball are being rolled out by NNSW in 2018, and the FNA will be participating in both.

Fast 5 will be played on Wednesday nights, from mid February and all of March 2018. Walking Netball will be played on Saturdays along with the normal 2018 Saturday competition.

Fast 5: Volunteers are still needed for the Fast 5 competition to be run. NNSW staff will come to Forbes and help and support the new committee. This competition will be run very differently to the normal netball competitions and a new committee must be formed. Anyone interested can email Tiff Nicholson at secretary.forbesnetball@gmail.com. There are many videos available on the game of Fast 5.
Representative and Assistant Coaches: Expression of interest are being called for representative coaches and assistant coaches for FNA teams competing in State Championships in 2018.

Suitable applicants will be allocated to teams that are formed. Anyone interested should contact Tiff Nicholson on above email. Coaches and assistant coaches will be supported if required.
