Birthday wishes: Philip Donato wished William “Bill” Britt a belated 100th birthday last week at Jemalong Residential Village. Bill, a lifelong farmer, a career which was only ever interrupted by his service in war, celebrated the significant milestone on 25th June. Philip also delivered a box of chocolates to Bill (one of Bill’s favourite) along with the birthday certificate. On his birthday, Bill was heard to remark “One hundred and not out!”

Letter To The Editor: Through the very well read pages of your paper, could I please remind the community of the amazing Community Transport Service that we are offering in Forbes. If you have a medical appointment in Orange, the wonderful drivers will pick you up from your front door and deliver you right to your doctor or hospital appointment. They will wait for you and then pick you up and deliver you safely back to your own home again. There is a small charge and sometimes no charge at all. If you are not well or disabled they will even send a trained carer along to help you. If you need to know more please contact Monica at the Forbes HAAC Centre 6851 4550. July School Holiday Fun At The YACC: Forbes Shire Council and the Forbes Youth Action Team are once again offering a school holiday programme. This July will see the Forbes Youth & Community Centre (located on the corner of Battye and Press Street) well-utilised, as local children and youth participate in a variety of activities. From 1pm to 5pm on Thursday and Friday holiday afternoons, young people are invited to come along to ‘Arvos @ the YACC’. These afternoons will feature a varied programme of games and activities including dungeons and dragons, dodgeball, board games and a pool tournament. Attendees will also be well fed with a free bbq lunch and afternoon tea provided. Council’s Youth Officer, Lauren Cook welcomes all youth and families to attend. “These free events and activities are designed to be inclusive and accessible for the whole community. This week is NAIDOC week and though the NAIDOC committee will be running their big NAIDOC event a little bit later this year, they wanted to give a big shout out to all the amazing women of the aboriginal community!

Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Award

The Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program Award was presented last Friday at the Forbes Shire Council Chambers to six Forbes residents for their outstanding contribution to the community through their volunteer efforts.

Member for Orange, Philip Donato MP said that he felt honoured to present the award to the recipients.

“I am pleased to present the Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program Award to these incredible volunteers, who have each played a significant role in the Forbes community,” said Philip.

“These volunteers have made a positive impact in the lives of many local people. It’s an honour for me to be able to recognise their contribution.

“Thank you for your remarkable contribution and congratulations on your award,” he said.

The award recipients were:

• Rosemary and Robert (Bob) Lee for 60 years of volunteering at the Forbes Harness Racing Club;

• Ray Lasserre and Charles (Paddy) Malloy for almost 40 years of volunteering at Jemalong Residential Village;

• Nancy Parry for approximately 18 years of volunteering at Jemalong Residential Village and

• Veva MacCullagh for approximately seven years of volunteering at Jemalong Residential Village.

Monthly Medals Decided

Saturday was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Walkers Ag-n-Vet, contested by 64 players in difficult conditions.

The A-Grade winner was Steve Betland with a nett 74. A good front-9 was offset by an ordinary back-9. Runner-up was Mark Collits on 76 nett, who snuck in ahead of two other players.

The B-Grade winner was Brian Everest with a 70 nett. He had a good back-9 after an indifferent front-9. Runner-up was Brian Doyle with 71 nett.

The C-Graders put in some good scores with Milton Cartwright (71) and Geoff Betland (73) showing what could be done.

The ball sweep went to 76 nett on count back, going to: 70 – B Everest; 71 – M Cartwright, B Doyle, A Borger; 72 – P Barnes, S Uphill; 73 – G Betland; 74 – L Little, P Kay, S Betland; 75 – A Callaghan, D Culley and 76 – G Coles, M Collits, S Kirkman, N McMillan, R Nixon. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Terry Griffiths; 18th – Troy Howe.

The Sunday Stableford Medley was played by a very small crowd with Barb Drabsch (30 points) taking the overall win and the NTP’s.

The draw for the Wallace Cup (match play on handicap) will be made this weekend, so if you want to be ‘IN’ contact the club captain on 6851 5293.

Two important LVDGA events are very close. The Mixed Fourball Championships will be held at Grenfell on 22nd July and the Men’s Fourball District Final will be held at Forbes on 5th August.

Question of the week -Do you think the plastic bag ban will help reduce pollution?

Maureen Field: It will definitely help decrease pollution and I’m all for it!

Robyn Mattiske: I think it will lessen pollution, especially around the cities where it’s a big issue with plastic getting in the waterways and harming marine life.

Anne Hodges: I agree that the plastic bag should go and the biodegradable bags are great.

Forbes Preschool To Celebrate 60th Birthday With A Ball

After 60 years of educating and preparing young people for school, Forbes Preschool has been, and continues to be, a part of almost every single household in Forbes.

Play-based learning has been the secret to 60 years success in the Forbes community. As well as providing vital early learning skills and a place where first friendships are made and plenty of fun is had.

To celebrate, Forbes Preschool is inviting all who have been a part of those 60 years to come along and celebrate on Saturday, 4th August at the Forbes Golf Club starting at 6:30pm.

Have you been a part of the committee? Do your children go to preschool or will you have children at preschool in the future? Did you always hope to get to a ball but were too busy with little people? Get a group of friends together and lock your tickets in now before it is too late.

Forbes Preschool Director, Amy Shine said: “As much as this night is to celebrate 60 years of preschool it is about giving mums and dads a night off too.”

Tickets are $65 each and can be purchased on Eventbrite/Forbes Preschool 60th Birthday Ball tickets. Tickets include a champagne or beer on arrival, cocktail dinner by Eat Your Greens and a dessert bar. Drinks can be purchased throughout the night from the fully stocked bar.

Woman Of The Year

Forbes residents are being encouraged to highlight brilliant women in their community, with nominations now open for the 2019 NSW Woman of the Year Awards.

Minister for Women, Tanya Davies officially opened state-wide nominations ahead of the 2019 Woman of the Year Awards program, which will be celebrating its eighth year. “These awards are our chance to recognise exceptional women across the State, particularly those who have excelled despite adversity or made contributions that improve the lives of others,” said Tanya.

“Women from all walks of life make outstanding contributions to our communities while overcoming gender inequity to pursue their personal and professional goals.”

The 2019 NSW Woman of the Year Award categories include:

• NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year Award

• NSW Aboriginal Woman of the Year

• Community Hero

• Harvey Norman Young Woman of the Year

• Rex Airlines Regional Woman of the Year

• NSW Business Woman of the Year

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have been living in Forbes for 16 years. I like living here because it’s very friendly, there are lots of activities to get involved in and it has beautiful weather especially when it’s colder in the winter.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I’m retired but belong to lots of groups such as the Forbes Eisteddfod, Arts Society, Bridge Club, Parkes Musical Society and Jemalong Residential Village Auxiliary.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I read, do needlework, knit and patchwork.

What are you really good at? I’m probably a good organiser. I was a high school principal in Sydney so probably also good with people and I play piano.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? None.

What is your pet hate? I don’t like intolerance.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. My best holiday was probably an overseas trip I did to Italy, Greece and England.

Croquet News

Week ending 7th July

It was a rather subdued morning on the croquet courts on Tuesday, remembering our good friend and companion Neville Morrison. The members were privileged to form a “Guard of Honour” at his funeral that afternoon. We enjoyed many years of his comradeship and placid nature.

Winners of three games on the day were Dorothea Croker, Merv Langfield, Joan Littlejohn, Bob Murray, Harley Stewart and Neville Spry.

Saturday had an Antarctic wind blowing across the fields, but 25 members still participated. Winners of three games were John Cole, Elvy Quirk and Barry White.

MAYORAL NOTES

We are very proud of our Central West Livestock Exchange. It’s a real asset to the community with throughput of more than $330 million. Users of the Central West Livestock Exchange may have noticed that there is increased signage on site relating to speed limits and the safe and appropriate loading of trucks. If you use the saleyards we would really appreciate your compliance with these signs. If everyone does the right thing, the facility is safe and efficient.

Looking for something to do these school holidays? The Forbes Action Team will be hosting ‘Arvos at the Youth and Community Centre’. The centre will be opened on the Thursday and Friday afternoons of the 13th, 19th and 20th July from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. There will be a bbq lunch, board games, afternoon tea and a range of activities to keep the kids busy.

And finally, as you know we have been running a campaign to find a name for the dog outside the Forbes Post Office. A committee with representatives from Council, the Arts Society and Forbes Agents Society narrowed over 100 name recommendations down to five. Voting is open until 6:00pm on Friday, 13th July and can be done by visiting Council’s Facebook page or calling Council on (02) 6850 2300.

Upcoming Author Talks

The Forbes Library has two author talks coming up.

The first talk focuses on mental health when author, Kim Hodges visits the library on Monday, 30th July at 2pm.

Kim will give an insightful and emotional talk into her experiences with depression, including hospitalisations, visits to clinics, medication changes, effects on family, coping strategies and a detailed description of what depression feels like.

The next one is Jenny Old talking about her book ‘Back of Beyond’. Jenny will talk about her remarkable life on Friday, 3rd August at 2pm.

Surviving fires, floods, Cyclone Ted and the 1970’s beef crash, this is one woman’s remarkable story of love, adventure, disasters and wonderful times in the Gulf Country.

When 22-year-old Jenny Old followed her heart to the vastness of the Gulf of Carpentaria, she had no idea of the primitive conditions she’d find herself in.
