CONGRATULATIONS… Two hard working Forbes & District Lions Club members were honoured with the “James D Richardson” award at the Lions meeting held last week Tuesday. Encourage Students to Nurture a Greener Future: Local primary schools and early learning centres are set to go on a journey to a greener future, with applications now open for the first round of the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program. The program is being funded from the sale of the Woolworths ‘Bag for good’. Sales to date have raised over half a million dollars towards the program which will help young Australians be hands-on with gardening and recycling projects. Spring Photo Competition: The Forbes Phoenix has teamed up with Farmer From Down Under Photography to launch a spring photo competition. Forbes White Ribbon Day: The Forbes Domestic & Family Violence Committee is inviting the entire Forbes community to walk with them in their annual White Ribbon Day March to be held on Friday, 23rd November. The walk is in support of Australia’s campaign to stop men’s violence against women. Everyone will meet at Cross Street in front of Carpet Court at 10am and will finish in Victoria Park. Here, our youth will share their thoughts on why it is so important to stand up and speak out against violence and how together we can all make Forbes a safer community for everyone. A free sausage sizzle will be provided.

More than 180 people from all over Australia gathered in Forbes last weekend to take part in the Forbes Mega Farm Rescue. These amazing volunteers partook in a week of renovations to 14 farms in the Forbes district.

Scots All Saints College Building A Future Together

Education in regional NSW has been strengthened, following the integration of two leading schools in Bathurst, The Scots School and All Saints’ College, to create a new combined school of excellence, to be known as Scots All Saints College.

Headmaster of Scots All Saints College, David Gates said as activities at both schools continue at a steady pace throughout 2018, there is good momentum in the integration process to ensure the new College is ready to welcome all students in 2019.

“The exciting reality is two outstanding independent schools in Bathurst are coming together to provide a stronger and innovative educational offering for the current and future needs of all students.

The new school aims to preserve the best of two very successful schools and build on them for the current and future needs of all students,” said David.

“The high quality learning environments, calibre and caring nature of the teaching staff will offer exceptional co-curricular programs and teaching excellence for all students from pre-kindergarten through to Year 12.”

An upgrade of boarding facilities is in progress and plans are in place for further upgrades of specialist learning spaces in preparation for full integration in 2019.

Scots All Saints College Scots Campus will open its doors to the community on Saturday, 27th October from 11am to 2pm for their Open Day. Interested families are invited to come along to an information night to hear about the opportunities offered at the new senior school on Friday, 26th October at 7pm in the Aikman Hall.

There has been strong interest from families enquiring about the new school. Scholarships for 2020 offer students an opportunity to attend the college. Applications are now open.

Australia’s Oldest Annual Agricultural Exhibition

The Australian National Field Days (ANFD) is the oldest annual agricultural exhibition in the country established in 1952.

According to ANFD Manager Jayne West more than 600 exhibitors now travel to the Borenore site (15km west of Orange) from all over Australia and internationally to display their products and services during the three-day event.

The early days saw the Orange Branch of the Graziers’ Association get together to provide comparative demonstrations so that farmers could see machines designed for a specific purpose working side-by-side.

The very first Orange Field Day was staged at Kyala Park featuring displays and demonstrations by 40 exhibitors and attracted an estimated crowd of 5,000. It was declared a resounding success and became an annual event held at various properties until the permanent 75-hectare site was purchased at Borenore in 1972.

Since 1952, the field days have been organised by a voluntary committee, and in 1966 the Orange Field Days Co-op Limited was formed and registered as a Community Advancement Society to administer the Australian National Field Days.

This year there will be activity centres, sheepdog trials, demonstrations, live music, racing pigs, petting zoo and a fashion parade.

M & D Celebrates With Extraordinary Show

The time has come to give yourself some goosebumps!

The Parkes Musical & Dramatic Society’s home has been transformed into a state of- the art theatre and they are ready to celebrate with a gala concert that showcases memorable moments from musicals and concerts over the past 18 years – since the last refurbishment in 2000.

Over $500,000 was spent on lush new theatre seats, tiered flooring and modern interior design. It is only fitting that a hugely talented cast, band and crew of over 60 members, who had all been involved in previous productions, will make Goosebumps a memorable show. It will feature well-known songs, such as Hard knock life, Pick a pocket, Climb every mountain, Beauty and the Beast, I don’t know how to love him, Somewhere over the rainbow, Timewarp, Supercalla, and medleys from Grease and Les Miserables.

There are only six performances on 19th, 20th, 21st, 26th, 27th and 28th October.

Marriages

How do you legally become married in Australia? Firstly, you have to decide to marry and who is going to be the celebrant. Priests, ministers of recognised religions and registry officers are nominated by their religious bodies to be marriage celebrants.

How do you become a civil marriage celebrant? Being appointed a Justice of the Peace does not allow you to be a marriage celebrant. Before applying to become a Commonwealth-registered marriage civil celebrant you must:

(a) be 18 years of age;

(b) complete Certificate IV in Celebrancy at a registered training organisation and ;

c) be a fit and proper person and be of good standing within the community.

Secondly, you are required to give a marriage celebrant at least one month’s notice and not more than 18 months’ notice of an intended date of marriage.

The priest or marriage celebrant will provide you with the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) to complete. The marriageable age is 18 years. If a person is 16 or 17 and wishes to marry prior to their 18th birthday, a court can give authority for the marriage to be solemnised, although parents may also give their permission. A NOIM may be lodged prior to the 18th birthday, as long as the marriage occurs after the birthday.

Both parties are required to provide original birth certificate or passport. If either party has been previously married, you must provide evidence of the termination with either a divorce certificate (if divorced) or a full death certificate (if widowed). Certificates in a foreign language must be translated into English by an authorised interpreter/translator service. Photocopies are not accepted.

MAYORAL NOTES

I would like to start this week by saying how absolutely amazing the Mega Farm Rescue is for Forbes! Kim Lowe needs a big pat on the back for having the vision and drive to help make this happen. Fourteen farms are having various renovations done by between 180 to 200 volunteers with all sorts of trade and labouring backgrounds.

The Mega Farm Rescue is the baby of Tracy and Charles Alder. They co-ordinate what work is to be done, raise funds and generally put the plan together. Whilst some items are brought in, the majority of materials needed will be purchased locally and will boost the local business trade. On Wednesday night they had dinner in town to help support the local restaurants. If you see them around say “hi”.

Last weekend I attended the Forbes Race Meeting. It was great to be there to re-open the refurbished grandstand with Phil Donato. There was a great field of horses on the day as well as great outfits, good food, nice wine and a wonderful day out. Thank you to the Forbes Jockey Club committee for all the hard work you put in The expansion of the Central West Livestock Exchange is getting closer to fruition with tenders going out for the work. These will need a resolution of Council which will most probably be at the November meeting.

Monthly Medals Contested Well

The October Monthly Medal, sponsored by Forbes Concrete, was played on Saturday, 6th October with the field of 77 relishing the chance to earn themselves a medal.

The A-Grade winner was Shane Sallaway, with a fine 68 nett. He turned in 38 and then produced a blistering 34 on the back-9 to ensure a great score. Runner-up was Andy Dukes with a nett 70. He too had 38 on the front-9 but then his concentration faltered on the back-9.

The B-Grade winner was Stephen Uphill with a nett 70. His front-9 was ‘easy as’ but the back-9 was a stumble. Mark Watts finished runner-up with a tidy 72 nett. The C-Grader’s saw a tight battle separated by count back. Bruce Chandler managed a nett 73 after a scattered scoring start, and got the nod ahead of Frank Hanns.

The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back, going to: 68 – S Sallaway; 70 – A Dukes, S Uphill; 72 – M Watts; 73 – P Owen, B Chandler, T Morgan, G Pymont, F Hanns; 74 – B Ashton, D McAuliffe, K Herbert, D Bayley, B Parker, J Coulthurst, P Kay; 75 – M Collits, I Bown, T Griffiths, G Webb and E Gaffney. The NTP’s went to: 9th – D Bayley; 18th – S Sallaway.

The visitors participating included Lee Grierson, John Boyle (Tathra Beach), Peter Owen and David Carmody (both Maroochy River). They enjoyed their time here.

Once again there were ‘if only’ moments. If only Brad Ashton had not scored a triple- bogey, or Lee Grierson had not had a mixed scoring game they may have been winners.

The Stableford Medley on Sunday, 7th October had a good field, with Ray Taylor the winner on 40 points. Runner-up was Julie Hurkett with 39 points.

There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Jill Cripps, and 18th – Richard Smith.

The Wallace Cup has reached the semis with matches being: Ash Tucker vs Neil Mc- Millan and Stephen Uphill vs Niel Duncan. The Men’s Club Championships began last weekend and will be played over two weekends combining four rounds of play. On Saturday, 20th and Sunday, 21st October the club champs continue. Players are reminded that there will be a seeded draw for the top eight in each grade for Sunday’s play.

There are daily prizes (sponsored by Pool Magic) and the big prize at the end (sponsored by Lachlan Commodities), so do not despair if your first game is a shocker.

Players are advised that the course will revert to the local ‘Play the Lie’ rule. The course condition has improved sufficiently to allow a return to our normal local rule.

Croquet Results

Croquet week ending 29th September A special morning tea was held on Tuesday, 25th September to honour one of our foundation members and a person who has given years of dedication to the Forbes Croquet Club. Our former treasurer, Dorothea Croker is moving closer to her family in the Newcastle area. On behalf of the club, we wish her many more years of good health and participation in the things she loves.

It was a good turnout for Tuesday’s golf croquet with five winners of three games. They were Lyn Simmonds, John H. Browne, John Cole, Colleen Liebich and Dorelle Scott.

Saturday’s Aussie croquet only had three winners of their three games. They were Bob Murray, Jill Rubie and Bill Scott.

Croquet week ending 6th October Celebrating October birthdays are Joan Littlejohn, Kathleen Broderick, Alec Todd, Marjorie Styles and Lyn Simmonds.

Winners of three games in our Tuesday golf croquet were Bruce Field (Mr Consistent), Veva MacCullagh (Mrs Consistent) and Libby Smart. One of the best games of the day was by Doreen Whitworth. Well done!

Saturday’s Aussie croquet saw three winners. They were Merv Langfield, Joan Littlejohn and Elizabeth McLean.

Croquet week ending 13th October

There were two winners of their three games on Tuesday, namely John Cole and Jill Rubie.

The game of the morning at Saturday’s Aussie croquet was between Joan Littlejohn and Bob Murray against Kevin Rubie and Harley Stewart. Joan and Bob Murray won the match. The winners of three games today were Joan Littlejohn, Veva MacCullagh, Barry White and John Allegri.
