Diverse Range On Show

The large list of categories for cars, motor- bikes and trucks will ensure a varied display for motor enthusiasts attending the 10th Annual Forbes Motor Show.

There are 20 categories for cars, creating a diverse range of cars and sections for enthusiasts to view. The Best Modified Car Pre 1990 and Best Modified Car Post 1990 categories will provide a timeline of cars through the ages, showing the distinct differences.

Best Engine Bay and Best Interior will place emphasis on sections of the car while Best 4 x 4 and Best Ute will create a contrast to the classic cars.

Motorbikes will be displayed in 4 categories. Best Custom Bike will showcase individuality while Best Veteran/Vintage Bike will be unique viewing.

There are 7 truck categories, with Best Restored Truck providing a platform for dis- playing the results of restorers hard work.

Registration is $15 per entrant with $5 display only available. Registration forms are available from the Forbes Motor Show Facebook page or at the event on the day. Gates open at 8am for registration.

Forbes Motor Show Celebrating 10 Years

GEARING UP…This years Forbes Motor Show is set to be bigger and better than ever. Pictured are some of the entries at the 2018 event.

The 10th annual Forbes Motor Show being held this October long weekend, promises to be a great day out for the whole family.

There will be a wide range of attractions starting with show stopping displays of cars, trucks and motorbikes. There will also be a V8 simulator, the Snake Man and a demonstration by the State Emergency Service cutting up a car to extract those inside.

For those wishing to enter the show, there are 20 car categories including Best Classic Car, Best Paintwork and Champion of Show. Motorbikes have four categories including Best Custom Bike and Best Sport Bike. There are seven truck categories including Best Working Truck and Best Display Truck.

A barbecue will be run by the Wirinya

Group and there will be food, coffee and ice cream stalls. There will also be stalls offering car memorabilia, clothing and plants.

Committee member Jill Kay believes it’s a show not to be missed, “I am very biased, as I have been on the Committee for 10 years, but we believe and have been told by entrants that we are one of the best mo- tor shows in the west.”

Entry is $2 per adult and $1 per child. Monies raised will be donated to local charities Forbes Breast Cancer Support Group, Forbes Men’s Shed and Forbes Eisteddfod. The Motor Show is on this Sunday from 10am – 2pm at South Circle Drive.

Iris Farm Now Open: The Narromine Iris Farm is now open for the flowering season. Forbes Please Stand Clear

Please stand clear of the medical retrieval helicopters when in Forbes.

The Forbes Health Service is urging the community to stand clear when the Medical Retrieval helicopters are landing and taking off at the Health Service.

Lachlan Health Service’s Manager Liz Mitchell said, “The Medical Retrieval helicopters are an essential part of health care in rural and remote areas.”

“It can be exciting to watch the helicopters land or take off, but by-standers can put their safety, and the operation of the helicopters themselves, at risk if they’re standing too close.”

“The Helicopters are a fast and efficient means to transfer critically ill or injured patients to larger health facilities. It’s important we get patients into the helicopter and on their way to care as quickly as possible. The helicopters are heavy machinery and pose a safety risk to any people around the helipad during the landing or take-off procedure”.

The helipad is NOT public land. It is protected by the Inclosed Lands Protection Act 1901, Members of the public must not be within 20 metres of the edge of the helipad during landing or take-off and must not approach the helicopter until the rotor blades are at a standstill, and only with the Helicopter pilot’s consent. People can be charged with trespass if they interfere with the helipad and/or helicopter. All vehicles must be parked at least 25 metres from the edge of the helipad. This restriction is clearly marked on the road.

The exclusion zone is to prevent injury to the helicopter crew and members of the public as the wind created during landing and take-off is very strong. Debris can also be sucked up into the rotor blades and cause damage to the helicopter which is a safety risk to the crew.

“We don’t want to see anyone suffer un- necessary injuries, so please follow the rules and keep yourself and others out of danger,” Liz said.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what is the best thing about living here? About 7 years. Forbes is an amazing community with a beautiful natural landscape and rich heritage.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I work at Forbes Shire Council and look after the Community and Tourism team. My favourite thing about work is my fantastic team and that we get to work with the community to do some great projects and events!

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? I love to read, garden and spend time with my family. I watch a lot of sport, dancing and horse riding and its great fun.

What makes you proud? My kids! For so many reasons. Not just because of their achievements but because of the wonderful humans they are becoming.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose and why? A bird would be pretty cool – imagine being able to fly!

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? For books – Anything by Tim Winton. I like all kinds of music from Sting to the Grigoryan Brothers to Tim McGraw and the Hilltop Hoods.

What is on your bucket list? To travel more with the family. To find the time to be creative and it would be good to be fitter!

What are you really good at? Op shopping for clothes. I can pull some pretty good outfits together from the Vinnies racks. I’m a keen environmentalist so this appeals to me on both a fashion and a “looking after the planet” level.

Tell us about your best holiday ever? Summer holidays on the South Coast are always the best. It’s a time to swim every day, eat too much, watch the cricket, read all those books that have piled up and get to know everyone again.

What makes your day? A clever one liner. It’s always good to have a laugh.

MAYORAL NOTES

If you have seen me at all this week, you would have noticed I have been wearing the mighty Raiders jacket everywhere in support! I can’t wait to see them play come Grand Final day. Unfortunately I won’t be there in person but I will be glued to the TV none-the-less.

This week I have been in Sydney for the Sustaining the Regions Forum. The main issue on the table is the current drought and how we can continue to work together with other Councils in the areas such as water management, roads and transport, waste, environment and renewable energy. It is very clear not enough is being done for our drought affected rural communities and I hope together we can put pressure on the government to act. The current processes involved to get support from the government are cumbersome and tedious. I have spoken with Minister Melinda Pavey and Mark Coulton, who were also at the Forum, about the issue and that we want our State members to think outside the box and come to the table with a clear vision of how we can keep NSW producing the food and fibre our country needs.

The Federal Government announced its next round of drought support this week, to disappointed ears. Only three NSW Councils were receivers of this funding.

Forbes has a lot on this weekend, make sure you go and check out the Forbes Mo- tor Show, Foodies Night Markets and the Biennial Open Gardens. Can I ask everyone to please take it easy on the roads this long-weekend. No drink driving, pull over if you are tired and just take your time to get to where you are going. I want everyone back home in Forbes safe and sound after the weekend.

Weekly Croquet Results

Tuesday saw a good turnout for Golf Cro- quet with 32 members arriving on another chilly morning. We welcomed two visitors Robert Kimble and Robert Rubie and wel-comed back Merv Langfield on the courts again after a stint in hospital. The winners of three matches were Denny Smith, Bruce Field, Mal Smith and John Cole.

Aussie Croquet 28th September
It was a nice chilly start to the day for our Saturday Aussie Croquet. The courts are looking a little dry with lots of bouncing as our balls travel the length of the courts. Welcome back to Anne and Harley Stewart from their overseas jaunt. The day saw only two winners of three matches, Cherylin Cole and Kevin Rubie. The closest games of the day were: Joan Littlejohn and Denny Smith 14 def Bob Murray and John Cole 11, Elizabeth McLean and Robin Pols 14 def Anne Stewart and Colleen Liebich 11.

Changes To Slow Down Rule

Motorists are reminded changes to the rule requiring them to slow down when passing stationary emergency vehicles came into force in NSW last week.

From 26 September:

Drivers will no longer need to slow down to 40km/h on roads with speed limits of 90km/h or over.
Drivers will continue to be required to slow down to 40km/h on roads with speed limits of 80km/h or under.
The rule will be expanded to include tow trucks and breakdown assistance vehicles which are displaying yellow flashing lights while stopped on the road.

On roads with speed limits of 90km/h or over drivers will need to:

• Slow to a speed which is safe and reasonable for the circumstances.

• Give sufficient space between their vehicle and the tow truck, breakdown assistance or emergency vehicle, as well as any people on the road.

• On multi-lane roads drivers must change lanes to keep the lane next to the stationary vehicle vacant if it is safe to do so.

Flannery’s Celebrates

Recently, Flannery’s Pharmacy celebrated their Guild Pharmacy of the Year win with the Forbes community.

“We wanted to reward our customers for their loyalty and support and decided to host a week long celebration,” said Business Manager Debbie Prior.

Flannery’s Pharmacy hosted various promotions throughout the week, including a nail bar, mini makeovers and blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring. “We also had some special guests instore including Di Gill from the Rural Mental Health team and a representative from Webstercare who talked to our customers about medication management,” said Debbie.

The week culminated with a special fundraising morning tea for CanAssist on Friday 20th September. “The team at Flannery’s baked some delicious goodies and ROKFM were instore interviewing customers and team members,” said Debbie. “We were also joined by the CanAssist committee who work so hard to raise funds for local cancer sufferers”. The team at Flannery’s were very proud to raise $596 for Forbes CanAssist.

“Our customers also received free giveaways throughout the week,” said Debbie. “And everyone who used their LifeClub card went into the draw to win one of six gift bas- kets and a $100 LifeClub prize.”

Lucky winners of the gift baskets were Cloe Longobardi, Ellen Dehn, Chris Nicholson, Sarah Turner, Harold Collits and Robin Schall with Dianne Knox-Niven winning the $100 LifeClub prize.

“I would like to congratulate all our winners and to thank all our lovely customers for their ongoing support and loyalty to our Pharmacy,” said Debbie.

Thank You Dogs

Mental illness remains a heavy and wildly unspoken topic and through the connection people have with their dogs particularly in testing times, Thank You Dogs a new social media campaign aims to make the conversation about mental illness less cumbersome for many by incorporating their best mates of the fury kind into their stories.

Rural wedding photographer, Edwina Robertson, is the content creator for the project and said it’s all about helping people open up a little more.

“On the farm, your dog is probably your best worker, your best mate and they might just be your best listener too,” said Edwina If you have a story that you’d like to share about a tough time you’ve experienced and how your favourite furry friend helped you in getting through that time, then Thank You Dogs would like to hear from you. Simply follow them on Facebook and Instagram @thankyou_dogs and submit your stories and images to try and break this stigma about mental illness!
