Kate Kelly’s Story Unsilenced

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

UNSILENCED: Rebecca Wilson (right) at the unveiling of the Kate Kelly memorial plaque at the place where she died to coincide with the launch of her new book “Unsilenced”.

Author Rebecca Wilson recently launched her debut book, Kate Kelly, the true story about Ned Kelly’s little sister, in her hometown of Forbes. Locals have rejoiced at the launch of this book and having this incredible story be told.

“When I was a young person growing up in Forbes in the central west of New South Wales, my uncle told me that Kate Kelly, the younger sister to renowned bushrangers Ned and Dan Kelly, had lived in the town for a number of years. But it wasn’t until 2010 that I discovered that the teenaged Kate had ridden as a decoy for and delivered news and supplies to the Kelly gang when they were on the run in northeast Victoria from 1878 to 1880. I was instantly intrigued, and jumped down the rabbit hole of research, hot on Kate’s heels,” Rebecca said.

One aspect of Kate’s story that intrigued me was the mystery surrounding her death. Kate had arrived in the region in 1885 and was employed at Cadow Station, in Forbes, as a domestic servant under a false name. I was shocked to discover it had been my relatives who hired her.

After playing a significant role in the saga of her brothers and suffering relentless fame as a consequence, Kate was found dead in a waterhole in October 1898, leaving behind three young children and an infant. Perhaps her attempts to disappear from the public eye are the reason her story is not remembered very well in history’s pages.

“I congratulate Bec on the launch of this wonderful book,” said Forbes Shire Councillor, Michele Herbert who was at the launch.

“I think it is so important we tell the stories of the past and keep our history alive for future generations.”

What’s Your Disability Story?

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

People with a disability, their families and their carers discovered how they could tell their story at the Disability Royal Commission. Lawyers from Your Story Disability Legal Support are coming to Forbes next week to help people tell their disability.

Your Story solicitor Rachael Vincent said the service was created to support people with a disability, their families, carers, supporters and advocates. “We understand there are many people with a disability who may want to share their stories with the Royal Commission,” she said.

“People can share all kinds of experiences with the Royal Commission. This could include negative experiences, or ideas about how we can create a more inclusive society for all.”

“But we also understand that many are worried if they do, their lives may be made worse. That may be through discrimination, or changes to the delivery of their essential services by people who may still be involved in their care. We’re here to empower people to be able to share their stories safely.”

Your Story Disability Legal Support is a joint initiative between National Legal Aid and National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, set up to give legal support and advice to people wanting to share their stories with the Royal Commission.

Local staff from Legal Aid NSW and Aboriginal Legal Services NSW/ACT, who know the community and local issues, provide the services on the ground in Forbes.

All of the stories gathered in Forbes will inform the Disability Roy-al Commissions final report, which is expected to be presented to the federal government in the second half of 2022.

The report will make recommendations about how we can make changes to improve the lives of people with disability and empower everyone to live safely and participate equally in society.

Forbes’ Rich History Celebrated

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

FORBES HERITAGE WEEK: Forbes will be celebrating 150yrs (plus one) next week with a range of special commemorative events for the community to come along and see as well as participate in from trail walks to gala celebrations. Image courtesy of Convict Footprints.

Forbes will celebrate over 150 years of rich history during the Forbes Heritage Week Festival starting on the 1st May 2021.

The week begins with a Festival in Victoria Park and Harold Street and Mayor of Forbes, Phyllis Miller said this year is even more special than ever, with Council celebrating 150 years, plus 1, this year.

“Forbes will step back in time this coming week to celebrate and pay homage to the traditions that have shaped our amazing town,” said Forbes Shire Council Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM. “The Festival week begins this Saturday, 1 May, with a festival day in Victoria Park showcasing roving entertainment group, Convict Footprints. This group is so incredible and their shows make history fun to watch, it’s not boring at all. If the kids like Horrible Histories they will love this!

“The Festival will also showcase a variety of stalls including our local Museum and there will be a Blacksmith and a Cheese Maker showing the old techniques to the public. The CWA and Lions Club Damper competition will be on again as these two rivals battle it out each year to see who can make the best damper. Watch them cook over an open fire pit where everyone will get the opportunity to try their cooked delights.

“There will also be vintage cars and machinery lining Harold Street,” continued Mayor Miller. “Swamp Dawkins Bush Band, family history, and a variety of stalls throughout beautiful Victoria Park showcasing our magnificent history. Bring the kids down to see how life was in times gone by.”

“Our week concludes with the celebration of 150 years of Forbes Shire Council. This is a truly a momentous occasion and we are so proud of the achievements we have accomplished over this time. We really want Heritage Week to be a celebration of our town’s heritage and history and it will be far from ordinary that’s for sure,” said Mayor Miller.

Lachlan PSSA Cross Country Held In Forbes

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

OFF AND RACING: Students from across the region converged on Forbes this week for the Lachlan PSSA Cross Country trials.

This week the Lachlan PSSA Cross Country were held at Forbes Racecourse with a strong turn-out of students from across the region from many centres and towns including Dubbo, Cowra and Eugowra.

Winners on the day were guaranteed a spot in the Western Trials on Wednesday June 9 at Geurie with the top 6 making it through. From there the winners proceed to the State PSSA titles on July 16 to battle it out against the top junior distance runners in the state.

Forbes turned on beautiful weather and the action track side was just as spectacular with some tight and intriguing racing throughout the day to keep the large crowd entertained in one of the first PSSA events since COVID.

Participants arrived at 10:30am for a walk through before the main action began at 11:15am with the Under 12/13 years boys over 3000 metres closely followed by the Under 8/9 years girls 2km run.

Fresh from the recent State titles at Homebush, Forbes was well represented with many local hopes in the field including Brock Maynard who has enjoyed previous success at the same meet previously. The trials finished with the Under 10 years girls at 12:30pm before official presentations and formalities.

A big congratulations to all participants and we can’t wait to see you all again next year!

Thanks again to all the local volunteers and families who also made this happen. Your support helped make the day a raging success and we could not have done it without you!

From Camp Hill To Forbes – 150 (+1) YEARS OF HISTORY

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

According to Aussie Towns website, “Forbes is a remarkably elegant and substantial inland town. Famous for its connections with the bushranger, Ben Hall (he was killed and buried here), today it is an important rural service centre noted for its fine parks and gardens and its large and gracious public buildings. The rural economy in the district is based around a major cattle sale yards complex, beef and hay exports, wool, wheat, grain seed crops, oil seed crops, fruit and vegetables.”

The settlement was first named by Surveyor General John Oxley who called it simply Camp Hill. Oxley subsequently re-named the settlement Forbes after Francis Forbes, later Sir Francis Forbes, who became the first Chief Justice of New South Wales in the Supreme Court.

But Forbes is so much more than that. It’s the Vandenberg Hotel, Mayor Thomas’s Grecian Fountain, the Band Rotunda, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and the Post Office Hotel. Forbes is the Sweet Three Vintage Van, the Forbes Platypi and the Forbes Magpies. It’s the ski dam and VanFest and now Australia’s Biggest Bogan Festival too. It’s Katie Kelly, Phyllis Miller and Phil Duke. It’s the flat red horizon with endless blue skies, starry nights and camp fires. Forbes is many things to many people.

To me though it represents family, nature, lifestyle and friends. It’s a cold drink on the deck at the Bowling Club, a nice meal at Wan Wah or even a walk along the heritage trail. Forbes isn’t just a town – it’s amazing!

In an action-packed weekend full of racing, the 2021 New South Wales Senior Track Championships produced five different class winners after two days of very competitive action.

Junior classes were dominated by Forbes local riders with Forbes’ Michael Price claiming second place in the U12-U16s and in U9s to U12s race hot prospect, Sam Drane, just shaded his Forbes clubmate Hugh Hope-Hodgetts for first place.

In other news, the Forbes Auto Sports Club are looking for experienced riders to come aboard as club coaches. For more information visit the Forbes Auto Sports Club’s Facebook page.

MX Round 1 will also be held this weekend May 1. Entries are closed for this event.

The track is in superb condition due largely to the efforts of numerous volunteers. Participants and attendees should also be aware there are limited transponders for hire so please ensure you are organised to avoid disappointment. See you Saturday!

Turnbulls Win Five But Hewitt Wins Diggers

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

WINNERS: Connections of Robert Lee Memorial winner SUBSTITOOTH who was very impressive in its victory against a strong field.

Steve, Josh and Nathan Turnbull may have taken five of the eight races at Forbes Showground on ANZAC Day at the Diggers Cup meet but it was Bernie Hewitt with two wins including the Forbes Diggers Cup that had tongues wagging.

Trained and driven by Hewitt, “Make Mine Memphis” the $1.75 pre-race favourite was always going to be hard to beat and despite the best efforts of Dazzle Me NZ and Maximus Red, the bay gelding won a short head over the two-kilometre journey.

Make Mine Memphis ran the first quarter in a solid 32.7 on what was a good track before splitting the field in the second quarter with a scintillating 28.8!

The Turnbull family meanwhile had a day to remember with five of the eight winners coming from their stable. Steve was the most successful of the trio with three wins and it could’ve been more had he had some luck in the others.

Saint Julien was arguably the pick of his chargers with the $1.15 favourite storm-ing home in the last quarter in 28 seconds – the fastest split of the day to knock off Royal Feeling and Promise to Rock back in third.

Saint Julien pocketed $1,852 for the win in the Forbes RSL Sub Branch Les Findley Memorial and the horse is only going to get better.

Next race meeting is this weekend as part of the Diggers Cup week in Forbes. Gates open midday Sunday May 2 for the Tab Carnival of Cups in what should be a tremendous day of harness racing. Entry fee is $10 for adults with children Under 16 free. Bar and TAB facilities will also be available.

Feature races are the Forbes Diggers Harness Racing Club Final and Jack Honan Memorial Final.

See you trackside!

ANZAC Day Celebrated By Massive Crowds

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

It was the first ANZAC Day since COVID broke and if crowds are any indicator, it was also one of the biggest ANZAC Days Forbes has seen in recent memory. The large numbers of participants had all come to recognise and acknowledge the 106th anniversary of ANZAC Day.

It began with the dawn service as the Last Post echoed across the still vespers light at Victoria Park culminating in the customary march from Cross Street to the Forbes Cenotaph.

Forbes Shire Council Mayor Phyllis Miller was “ecstatic” with the turn-out while Forbes Sub Branch President Michael Walker said “today proved ANZAC Day is alive in Forbes!”

There were families, some four generations deep, vintage cars, marching band and key speakers throughout the stirring ceremony to acknowledge our servicemen and women and the ANZAC spirit.

Observed on 25 April each year, ANZAC Day was originally devised to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who served in the Gallipoli Campaign, their first engagement in the First World War (1914–1918). ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of that first campaign that led to major casualties for Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

It was certainly a special way to bring in one of the most important days on the national calendar and confirmed that the ANZAC spirit is well and truly still alive in Forbes.

Ecuador Comes To Town

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Even though COVID-19 has interrupted international travel, nothing could stop members of Forbes CWA Evening Branch and their guests experiencing some of the food and culture of Ecuador recently.

“Expanding our knowledge of other countries and the cultural aspects of that community raises awareness and encourages members to socialise and support each other as well as those in other communities,” said Robyn Miller, president of the CWA Evening Branch.

“By studying a country, members are furthering their knowledge and understanding, which is a focus for the CWA.”

Members and guests sat down to an Ecuadorian three course meal prepared by Kim and Marc, and their team at the Vandenberg Hotel that included traditional foods such as slow cooked pork marinated in beer, garlic and cumin and beef marinated in achiote spice served with guacamole, tomato salsa and hot sauces followed by an entree of empanadas filled with cheese and onion.

Unable to find a local who has travelled in Ecuador to be a guest speaker, the internet and Mr YouTube proved to be a great source of information. The gathering learned about fifteen surprising things that Ecuador is famous for including the Panama hat, cut flowers especially the rose and the orchid, and the most hummingbird species in the world, and that Ecuador exports some of the finest chocolate in the world. Surprisingly to many though is the fact that they also eat guinea pig (cuy).

“The success of the night would not be possible except for the outstanding research and culinary skills of Kim, Marc and their team in the Vandenberg Hotel kitchen for providing another delicious and unusual traditional meal,” said Mrs Mackinnon.

Thanks also go to David Mahlo for his technical assistance on the night.
