Golfers Battle The Cold

The Forbes golfers enjoyed a weekend of dry conditions, but had to battle the cold.

The men’s competition on Saturday was an 18-hole stroke event, sponsored by B&M Tooth, with 67 starters.

Division 1 was won by Jack Dobell, on count back from a string of players all on 71 nett. Jack’s handicap after a tidy back-9 brought him victory. Runner-up was Mike Brindle.

The division 2 winner had a better margin. Allan Rees took the honours with a 70 nett, ahead of Henry Nash on 72 nett.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Dave Bernardi; 18th – Barry Parker. The 3rd hole super pin went to Kyle Sharp with a shot to 3.2 metres, which was okay for his first game in many weeks.

The Ball Sweep went to 76 nett on count back, with many players just a shade over par. The visitors included: Stuart Hayes (Murrumbidgee), Ryan Edwards and Matt Littlewood (Parkes) and Jarrod Hall (Trundle).

There was no Sunday Stableford Medley due to low numbers.

This weekend the men’s comp is an 18-hole 2-P Ambrose Medley with a Stableford Medley on Sunday at Forbes.

Four Championship Matches

The recent Women’s Bowling AGM at the Parkes Bowling & Sports Club saw a changing of the guard. Outgoing president Maureen Miller (left) with the new Executive Lynn Ryan (secretary), Maria Willcockson (vice-president) and Merilyn Rodgers (president).

Two Minor Singles matches were played on Saturday at the Parkes Bowling & Sports Club.

The evergreen Tony Riordan played Brian Hampton in a closely fought match in which the margin between the two was never more than 3 or 4 shots with ‘Sticks’ Hampton claiming victory 25 to 22.

A much-anticipated Minor Singles match between Michael and Joanne saw Joanne starting off strongly and was matching Michael shot for shot. Michael took command at 13 to 5 and won the match 25 to 14.

Saturday afternoon the Minor Pairs match between John Wright and Brian Townsend against Ian Simpson and Brian Hampton was a one-sided affair after Team Townsend opened up a 12 shots to 3 lead and ran out comfortable winners 25 to 11.

Sunday afternoon saw a keenly fought Minor Singles match between Gary McPhee and Marty Tighe. The match only went for 26 ends. Marty bowled very well early and was leading 18 to 13. Leading 20 to 19 on the 24th end, Marty was holding 2 shots. Gary bowled a screamer of a on-shot to pick up the Jack, put it in the ditch and followed through to score 2 shots on that end, and won 25 to 20.

Forbes And Trundle Riders Excel At State Showjumping

Four Forbes Pony Club riders and one from Trundle travelled to Warialda last weekend for the Pony Club NSW State Showjumping Championships where they achieved some good results.

Riders Freya Hooper, Tess Worland, Jemma Hodder and Jake Tomlinson joined Jorja Rusten from the Trundle Pony Club to make up the Zone 11 Pony Club Team.

Under the care of Team Manager Nicky Rusten, who did a great job keeping the team in order, they competed against riders from all over NSW and even a Queensland contingent.

All four Forbes riders entered the championships for the first time. Instructor Laurie Norris said it was a great experience for the team.

“Competing at State is a wonderful experience for our members,” said Laurie. “Each of the riders had success and learnt a few lessons as well. This will only help their riding into their next competition.”

Forbes Pony Club president Gary Tomlinson celebrated the success of the club’s riders. “I am so pleased to report that Tess Worland ran 3rd in under 15 B Grade, Freya Hooper 3rd in Under 17 C Grade, Jake Tomlinson 4th in under 15 A Grade and Jemma Hodder – in a very large class of riders- 12th in under 15 C Grade.”

Jorja competed in the 15 – u17 age group jumping A grade. After four rounds she collected a 5th, 6th and two 8th positions to place her 7th in the state.

“We are so very proud of their efforts and their sportsmanship in cheering on each other and the success of other riders. All of the horses stood up well to the competition too, jumping up to seven rounds over the course of the weekend.”

Ryan Defies Conditions

Two visiting golfers from Bathurst ready to play in the rain last weekend at the Forbes Golf Club.

Last weekend was classed by Forbes golfers as wet. Yet, 53 players still ventured onto the golf course to try to win the Monthly Medal but many had second thoughts and retreated to the Golfie.

The Men’s Monthly Medal 18-hole Stroke, sponsored by Walkers Ag-n-Vet, saw only 36 players complete their rounds.

The A-Grade was won by Harry Callaghan with 74 nett. He had a one-shot advantage over Kim Herbert on 75 nett despite having one less handicap. The B-Grade was won by Nick Ryan with the best medal winning score of the day, a 70 nett. He was so dominant in this grade that the runner-up was seven shots back, being John Murphy (Bathurst) on 77 nett.

The C-Grade was won by James Tooth from Mudgee with a 69 nett. However, the Medal went to Reggie Murray who finished with 75 nett taking his second medal in succession.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Lachlan Alley; 18th – Barry Parker. The 3rd hole super pin went to Jake Hemming with a shot to 2.7m. He was the only one on the card.

The ball sweep went to 84 nett on count back, indicating how tough it was to score out there for the majority of the field. The visitors included a group from Bathurst, who vow to come back in the sunshine, and James Tooth from Mudgee.

There was no Sunday Stableford Medley due to the inclement weather.

This weekend the Men’s comp is an 18-hole atroke event with a Stableford Medley on Sunday. Don’t forget the 2-P Ambrose Medley coming up on 16th July.

Rain The Winner At Croquet

Rain was the winner at Aussie Croquet last Saturday in Forbes.

On Tuesday 29 players braved the chilly weather for Golf Croquet. There were six players that had three wins: John Cole, Alex Todd, and Barry White – a family duo, Dorelle and Bill Scott, and another new player in Sue Jolliffe.

Big wins: 11—2 Bruce Field and Alex Todd, Dorelle Scott and Lyn Simmonds; 10—3 John Cole and Bill Scott, Dorelle Scott and John Farah.

Multi-Purpose Equestrian Arena For Forbes

At the funding announcement last week were (L-R) Forbes Shire Deputy Mayor Chris Roylance, Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller, Forbes Shire Council General Manager, Steve Loane and NSW Upper House MP Sam Farraway.

The Forbes Racecourse precinct is going to be turned into a multi-purpose equestrian arena thanks to a $3.5 million grant.

“This new multi-purpose equestrian arena will cater for all equestrian sports, including ranch sorting, camp drafting, show jumping, dressage, pony club, riding for the disabled and rodeo,” said NSW Upper House MP Sam Farraway last week.

“The new facility will also be capable of supporting sports education, training and skill development events.

“This Government is investing in facilities that will provide our local communities to enjoy the benefits of sport and active recreation and building what matters to the people of NSW,” said Sam.

Forbes Shire Council received the grant from the NSW Government’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.

Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM said council was excited to have this opportunity to build the new facility.

“Forbes has a long and distinguished equestrian history and this will give us the opportunity to continue to grow with a state-of-the art facility for sports education, training, skill development and as a venue for major competitions.

“We are also excited about the potential this support will mean for our very active Riding for the Disabled members as this facility will be an inclusive and all abilities accessible space for riders, competitors, spectators and organisers.

“The arena also has potential to expand its offerings to community groups and functions requiring a large outdoor space,” said the Mayor.

Almost $100 million was awarded to 38 clubs, associations, sporting organisations and councils across NSW in Round 1 of the fund, which invests in new or upgraded multi-sport facilities to provide more opportunities for people to play sport and be active.

What a beautiful winters morning for Aussie Croquet, to enjoy the morning. There were five players with three wins, John Browne, John Farah, John Cole ,Colleen Liebich and Elvy Quirk. Big wins were: 14 – 8 Ray Burridge, Colleen Liebich and John Browne; Cheryle Toohey and John Farah. 4 – 9 John Farah and John Browne.

Lachlan Dragons Named Community Choices Champions

Forbes Dragon Boat Club has been named one of Essential Energy’s Community Choices Champions for 2022.

Votes from the Forbes community provided the Forbes Dragon Boat Club with the support needed to assist them in the purchase of a 20 seat paddling boat as part of their equipment upgrade program.

“We feel so grateful to have the ongoing support of our community, and thanks to the $2,500 funding we’ve received through Essential Energy’s Community Choices program, we will be able to continue supporting them back,” President, Kathryn Sweeney said.

Essential Energy’s Chief Commercial Officer, Justin Hillier said the company is delighted to share the funding between community organisations in its network area.

“Essential Energy people live and work in towns across regional NSW and we see first-hand the difference these groups can make, that’s why we value this opportunity to give back to our local heroes,” Mr Hillier said.

Forbes Riders To Compete At NSW Showjumping Championships

Forbes Pony Club continues to go from strength to strength with four club members to represent the zone at the NSW Pony Club Showjumping Championships to be held in Bingara on 9th and 10th July.

The Forbes Pony Club riders who will travel to Bingara are Jake Tomlinson, Tess Worland, Jemma Hodder and Freya Hooper.

Forbes Pony Club President Gary Tomlinson said that the riders had been training extensively to have themselves and their horses in perfect competition condition.

“These kids have been training every day to give themselves the best chance at this elite competition,” he said. “I’m sure that they will once again do the club very proud.

“Our young members are really excelling and it has been great to see them improve every time they ride. Our club is very fortunate to have not only a friendly and supportive environment but also to have some great coaching by skilled horsepeople such as Laurie Norris and Rachael Morgan who give so much to our club,” Garry said.

This will be the fourth time this year that Forbes Pony Club has had representatives at State Pony Club competition, with members participating in State Tetrathlon, One Day Eventing and Combined Training so far.

Awesome Display In Foursomes Champs

The golf played last Saturday was the second of the year’s Championship events, namely the Foursomes, with players contending for the Mens and Ladies Stroke and Handicap trophies.

The Mens event, sponsored by FINDEX (Forbes) was played over two days with 42 players starting the contest but only 28 carrying onto the second day. However, the results were dominated by low scores and the days were sunny albeit chilly.

The Scratch Championship was won by the pairing of Shane Sallaway and Caleb Hanrahan, who fired 145 for the two days. This was 12 shots better than last year’s winning score, and which was posted by the runners-up John Betland and Stuart French.

The Handicap winners were Ted Morgan and Matt Duff, who capitalised on their good play, equal contributions, and their handicap to score 134 nett. Runners-up were Shane Callaway and Caleb Hanrahan on 145 nett, playing off a scratch handicap.

There were daily comp prizes, with Shane and Caleb taking both Scratch and Nett honours on day 1 and the Dawson/Dukes and Morgan/Duff pairings sharing the day 2 prizes.

The biggest story for the NTP’s and Super Pins is the ‘Hole-in-one’ scored by Sarah Black on the 3rd hole during day 1. Sarah played mid-morning and snuffed any chance for the Super-Pin for any later players.

The Mens NTP’s for day 1 and day 2 went to: 9th – Barry Parker, John Betland and 18th – Fons Melisi and Ted Morgan.

The Ladies Foursomes Champs were won by: Scratch – Brianna and Carolyn Duncan; Handicap – Rose Carroll and Veronica Rebellato.

There was no result in the Sunday Stableford Medley with too few participating.

This coming weekend we have the Juky Monthly Medal and a Stableford Medley on the Sunday.
