Forbes Players Gain Valuable Experience In Bathurst

FLYING HIGH… The 17s goal keeper Lily Boyd was named Players player for the day at the Bathurst Carnival. She is flying high playing Blayney on Sunday.

Four Forbes netball teams travelled to the Bathurst regional carnival on Sunday. The 11s were excited about playing in their first away carnival, while the 17s are nearing the end of their preparation for the Senior State titles in Camden over the June long weekend.

It was dads day with the dads stepping into the traditional helping roles usually carried out by the mums. Again, different combinations were tested, with players showing through their individual strengths. This will be used to put together combinations for the State Titles. The last carnival for the team is Dubbo next Sunday, with just three weeks to go to State Titles. Players player for the day was Lily Boyd.

The 14s took a step up at Bathurst recording the best results of the season against teams from Cowra, Blayney and Bathurst. Players player for the day was Holly Leighton.

The 12s development team really held their own impressing with their consistency in effort throughout the day.

The 11s were very excited for their second carnival for the season. These eight young ladies did not give up all day, playing with only one extra in each game.

They played some exceptional netball and improved every game.

Croquet Players Brave The Elements

Aussie croquet was played last Saturday under very bleak conditions, however 24 players braved the elements. Three games were won by John Browne and Geoff Coles. Close scores of 14/13 were recorded by Dorelle Scott/John Farah def Kevin Rubie/Bruce Field; Kevin Rubie/Colleen Liebich def Robin Pols/Barry White; Neville Spry/Bruce Field def Elvy Quirk/Robin Pols.

On Tuesday golf croquet was played with 30 players enjoying the game. The grounds are in near perfect condition and a big thank you must go to the Forbes Shire Council for their tireless effort mowing and marking. One top score was recorded by John Browne/ Joan Littlejohn def Evelyn Mahlo/Lyall Strudwick 10/3.

Many close games of 7/6 were recorded: John Farah/Jennifer Job def John Cole/May Jones; Bruce Field/Allan Jones def Marie Spry/Irene Ford, John Allegri def Barry White; Robin Pols/Fay Picker def John Job/Neil Gilmour; Neville Spry/Jeff Liebich def Bruce Field/Evelyn Mahlo; Allan Jones/Noel Jolliffe def Jennifer Job/Colleen Liebich; Barry White def Bruce Field/Lyall Strudwick. All three games on the day was won by John Allegri, John Cole, Jeff Liebich and Neville Spry. Once again a special thanks to the few members who arrive early to set up.

This week John Browne and Neville Spry have been busy making a mallet holder. It will be a great asset keeping mallets up off the ground. Our new signs at the clubhouse look great and many people have commented on them.

Golf Results

The men’s Stroke golf event on Saturday had a small field of 53 and was won by David Earl with 70 nett in division 1, runner-up Alf Davies 71 nett. Division 2 was won by newcomer Harry Quirk nett 64, runner-up Jake LeBrocque 70 nett.

The NTP’s: 9th – Warwick Judge; 18th – Brian Everest; 3rd Hole Superpin Alf Davies who put his ball to 2.98m.

The ball sweep went to 76 nett on count back. There were 14 successes so check in the Pro Shop to see if you were successful.

Sunday’s Stableford Medley was won by Sharon Grierson with 33 points, runner-up Henry Nash 32 points. There was no ball sweep, and also no NTP’s recorded.

This weekend we have an 18-hole Stableford, sponsored by the Hodges family, with the ‘Wilf Hodges Memorial Trophy’ up for grabs. Sunday has a Stableford Medley, as well as the final leg of the ‘Trilogy of Golf’ played at the Condobolin Open.

The Orange/Forbes under 12s and 14s stormed home to record two strong wins on Saturday versus Dubbo at the South Dubbo Oval.

The Swamp Tigers under 12s are now 2-1, while the 14’s are 3-0 after defeating Dubbo and banking a third consecutive win.

The Swamp Tigers under 14s were the best team for most of the game. The 14s kicked away in the third and fourth quarters to put the game to bed and take the win 12.10 (82) to 4.3 (27).

Seven days after being stunned by a depleted Bathurst Giants outfit in a fourth-quarter onslaught that saw the Giants record a come-from-behind victory, the Orange/Forbes under 12s produced a determined and controlled response and took the win 10.14 (74) to 3.1 (19).

Croquet

We had 24 for Aussie Croquet on a dampish morning last Saturday. There were three winners of three games: Robin Pols, John Browne and John Farah.

There was 27 for Golf Croquet on Tuesday, a pleasant morning with four players managing three games: John Browne, Bruce Field, Kevin Rubie and Geoff Coles.

Forbes Squash Co-Hosts Successful State Tournament

SQUASH ACTION… Pat Cormie takes the shot with Cameron Toole looking on during a match played at the Dave Fuller Memorial Intertown event held in Forbes and Parkes last weekend attracting 180 players from all over the state.

Forbes and Parkes Squash Clubs held a highly successful state tournament last weekend with almost 180 players competing in 326 matches over two days.

It was the second year in a row the Dave Fuller Memorial Intertown event was held in Forbes and Parkes largely due to the efforts of organisers Jay Kross and Darryn Piper.

A total of 40 teams from 15 NSW clubs competed in grades from A to D, women’s, men’s and juniors. A total of 184 matches were played on Saturday alone making for a full program of highly entertaining squash action at both the Forbes and Parkes centres.

Considering the less than ideal travelling conditions, organisers were stoked with the roll up and enthusiasm displayed by the competitors. Squash is usually a sport not overly affected by inclement weather so all events were well organised and ran smoothly. Visitors were well pleased with the venues, accommodation and all local facilities.

Talented local players like Darryn Piper, Jay and Henry Kross, Bec Connell and the Webb Brothers Mark and Scott kept the home crowd cheering. Great work by Graham Coombs at Forbes with the score sheets, squash shop and more. It was greatly appreciated by all.

The results for the graded divisions held at Forbes on Sunday were: Women’s A/B semis: Dapto v Cowra and Bathurst v Dubbo/Parkes-comb, winners Dapto v Dubbo/Parkes-comb, finals winner: Dubbo/Parkes-comb. Women’s C/D finals: Condo v Cowra team 2, winners Cowra team 2. Men’s C semis: Condo v Forbes and Springwood v Parkes, winners: Condo v Parkes. finals winner: Condo; Men’s D semis: Parkes v Cowra and Springwood v Forbes; winners: Parkes v Forbes, finals winner: Parkes.

The event was held in honour of the late Dave Fuller from Bathurst who ran the event successfully for close to 40 years.

Men’s Open Success In Wet Weather

The annual Men’s Open events saw 81 players in the 4BBB Stableford on Saturday, while the main 18-hole stroke open on Sunday had a good field of 116 players.

The Sunday Open produced very competitive scores despite the wet conditions. The A-Grade Scratch was won by Kurt Cusack (Wellington) with 72, while the A-Grade Handicap was won by Mike Wood Jnr (Dubbo) with 70 nett.

The B-Grade winners were: scratch – Anthony Alley (86) and handicap – Mike Gaffney (Griffith) with 74 nett on count back.

The C-grade winners were: scratch – Keith McCullock (Riverside) on 100 and handicap – Josh Wood (Dubbo) with 77nett on count back.

The veterans handicap winner was Peter Bristol (Parkes) with 71 nett, the junior handicap winner was Lachlan Alley (Forbes) on 85 nett, and the visitor winner was Stuart Hayes (Murrumbidgee) with 73 nett on count back. The ball sweep went to 77 nett.

Players braved wet conditions from above and underfoot on Saturday for the 4BBB Stableford. The scratch winners were J Betland & P Dawson (Forbes) with 40 pts, on count back from runners-up S Betland & J Bernardi (Forbes). The handicap winners were Jock Coupland & Tom Stuckey (Condo) with 46 pts. The handicap runners-up were Jack Dobell and Dave Tildsley (Forbes) on 45 pts.

The ball sweep went to 40 pts. The NTPs went to: 9th – Brett Thomas; 18th – Dave Mylecharane. The 3rd hole SuperPin went to Nicole Death.

This weekend we have an 18-hole stroke, sponsored by B&C Autos, with the West Wyalong Open on Sunday, and a Stableford Medley at home.

Netball

Two of the Forbes Netball Association teams that took part in the Orange Carnival last weekend: 14 year reps and 17u
reps.

Three teams represented Forbes Netball Association at a regional carnival last weekend in Orange. Rain hampered the day, with showers on and off during the games.

The 17s started the day with two new players, Sienna and Kiesha, who fitted perfectly into the team. They played six games and all combinations were tested against strong opposition from Cobar, Orange, Blayney, Lithgow and Parkes.

The 14s played eight games that tested their fitness, but they pushed through to some good results. After a win against Cobar, and a draw with Parkes, the girls played their best game of the day against Griffith.

The 12s Development team improved immensely throughout the day and had a wonderful conclusion to the carnival with an intense 6-10 loss against Parkes.

Forbes Lawn Mower Racing Event A Cut Above The Rest

The world of ride-on lawn mower racing zoomed in on Forbes last weekend for the largest event in the sports history when close to 100 drivers competed in the 2022 All Australian Ride-on Mower Racing Championship.

Forbes local David Teale kept the home crowd happy at the Forbes Autosports Club claiming third spot in the A class category.

Two other Forbes locals competed with Clint McDonald qualifying in 9th place for the B Class finals, while Craig Bratton unfortunately had some mechanical issues missing a few heats but still managed to qualify 11th for the A Class.

Australia’s best riders came from 11 clubs in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia to compete in seven classes from A to E and the Outlaws, the top grade. Each of the grades had eight rounds with the final races on Sunday afternoon with competitors aged from nine to 72 years.

Australian Ride-on Lawn Mower Association president Dianne Milsteed said the sport had come a long way and there was a sense of family that came with the sport as it was somewhat of a “niche event at the moment”.

“In reality when people can see what these somewhat simple machines can do they are blown away.” Some racing track designs limit the drivers to 50kph, but at the Forbes race track the souped-up modified mowers were able to go over 100kph making the event a cut above the rest.

Dianne credited David Teale and Craig Bratton for their hard work leading up to the event in Forbes and for the success it’s been.
