Ryan Defies Conditions

July 8, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Two visiting golfers from Bathurst ready to play in the rain last weekend at the Forbes Golf Club.

Last weekend was classed by Forbes golfers as wet. Yet, 53 players still ventured onto the golf course to try to win the Monthly Medal but many had second thoughts and retreated to the Golfie.

The Men’s Monthly Medal 18-hole Stroke, sponsored by Walkers Ag-n-Vet, saw only 36 players complete their rounds.

The A-Grade was won by Harry Callaghan with 74 nett. He had a one-shot advantage over Kim Herbert on 75 nett despite having one less handicap. The B-Grade was won by Nick Ryan with the best medal winning score of the day, a 70 nett. He was so dominant in this grade that the runner-up was seven shots back, being John Murphy (Bathurst) on 77 nett.

The C-Grade was won by James Tooth from Mudgee with a 69 nett. However, the Medal went to Reggie Murray who finished with 75 nett taking his second medal in succession.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Lachlan Alley; 18th – Barry Parker. The 3rd hole super pin went to Jake Hemming with a shot to 2.7m. He was the only one on the card.

The ball sweep went to 84 nett on count back, indicating how tough it was to score out there for the majority of the field. The visitors included a group from Bathurst, who vow to come back in the sunshine, and James Tooth from Mudgee.

There was no Sunday Stableford Medley due to the inclement weather.

This weekend the Men’s comp is an 18-hole atroke event with a Stableford Medley on Sunday. Don’t forget the 2-P Ambrose Medley coming up on 16th July.

Multi-Purpose Equestrian Arena For Forbes

July 8, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

At the funding announcement last week were (L-R) Forbes Shire Deputy Mayor Chris Roylance, Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller, Forbes Shire Council General Manager, Steve Loane and NSW Upper House MP Sam Farraway.

The Forbes Racecourse precinct is going to be turned into a multi-purpose equestrian arena thanks to a $3.5 million grant.

“This new multi-purpose equestrian arena will cater for all equestrian sports, including ranch sorting, camp drafting, show jumping, dressage, pony club, riding for the disabled and rodeo,” said NSW Upper House MP Sam Farraway last week.

“The new facility will also be capable of supporting sports education, training and skill development events.

“This Government is investing in facilities that will provide our local communities to enjoy the benefits of sport and active recreation and building what matters to the people of NSW,” said Sam.

Forbes Shire Council received the grant from the NSW Government’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.

Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM said council was excited to have this opportunity to build the new facility.

“Forbes has a long and distinguished equestrian history and this will give us the opportunity to continue to grow with a state-of-the art facility for sports education, training, skill development and as a venue for major competitions.

“We are also excited about the potential this support will mean for our very active Riding for the Disabled members as this facility will be an inclusive and all abilities accessible space for riders, competitors, spectators and organisers.

“The arena also has potential to expand its offerings to community groups and functions requiring a large outdoor space,” said the Mayor.

Almost $100 million was awarded to 38 clubs, associations, sporting organisations and councils across NSW in Round 1 of the fund, which invests in new or upgraded multi-sport facilities to provide more opportunities for people to play sport and be active.

Awesome Display In Foursomes Champs

July 1, 2022 by Short Putt

Neil Duncan has a classic pose as he drives during the Foursomes Champs.’

The golf played last Saturday was the second of the year’s Championship events, namely the Foursomes, with players contending for the Mens and Ladies Stroke and Handicap trophies.

The Mens event, sponsored by FINDEX (Forbes) was played over two days with 42 players starting the contest but only 28 carrying onto the second day. However, the results were dominated by low scores and the days were sunny albeit chilly.

The Scratch Championship was won by the pairing of Shane Sallaway and Caleb Hanrahan, who fired 145 for the two days. This was 12 shots better than last year’s winning score, and which was posted by the runners-up John Betland and Stuart French.

The Handicap winners were Ted Morgan and Matt Duff, who capitalised on their good play, equal contributions, and their handicap to score 134 nett. Runners-up were Shane Callaway and Caleb Hanrahan on 145 nett, playing off a scratch handicap.

There were daily comp prizes, with Shane and Caleb taking both Scratch and Nett honours on day 1 and the Dawson/Dukes and Morgan/Duff pairings sharing the day 2 prizes.

The biggest story for the NTP’s and Super Pins is the ‘Hole-in-one’ scored by Sarah Black on the 3rd hole during day 1. Sarah played mid-morning and snuffed any chance for the Super-Pin for any later players.

The Mens NTP’s for day 1 and day 2 went to: 9th – Barry Parker, John Betland and 18th – Fons Melisi and Ted Morgan.

The Ladies Foursomes Champs were won by: Scratch – Brianna and Carolyn Duncan; Handicap – Rose Carroll and Veronica Rebellato.

There was no result in the Sunday Stableford Medley with too few participating.

This coming weekend we have the Juky Monthly Medal and a Stableford Medley on the Sunday.

Forbes Netball 17U Reps At Senior State Titles

June 24, 2022 by Robyn Kenny

Robyn Kenny (coach) Hannah Williams, Kiesha Rusten, Laura Scott, Kaylar Emery, Sienna Marchant, Pip Hanrahan, Hannah Stanmore, Jane Davis, Eb Colvin, Lynda Scott (manager). Front Lily Boyd

The Forbes Netball Association was represented by the 17U team at the Netball NSW Hart Senior State Titles over the June long weekend at Camden netball courts. The team included Lily Boyd, Piper Hanrahan, Kaylar Emery, Laura Scott, Hannah Stanmore, Eb Colvin, Jane Davis, Hannah Williams, Sienna Marchant, Kiesha Rusten.

Seven games were played on day one of the Championships, where the team recorded a great win over West Wyalong and another over Blayney. With the other games against Singleton, Tumut, Wollondilly, Ballina and Brunswick Byron extremely close in their court play. Players player was shared between three girls, Eb Colvin, Jane Davis and Lily Boyd.

Day two was an up and down day for the team, interrupted by small injuries to a number of players, affecting the positioning of the players. Games were played against Casino, Armidale, Great Lakes, Hastings Valley, Inverell and Lithgow, and although no wins were recorded, all the girls played to their best ability, and supported each other in all their play, and never gave up trying. Players player for Day 2 was Hannah Stanmore.

Day three had another 6 games drawn to play, with a great win over Parramatta Auburn, and very close games against Manning Valley, Mt Druitt, Nelson Bay, Quirindi and Scone. Players player for day 3 was Lily Boyd.

The results of the games does not show the closeness of the play in the games, where the Forbes team played a high standard of netball throughout the full three days of the Championships, and never gave up trying. All of the girls should be congratulated for their outstanding sportsmanship, team work and support of each other.

Repeat Win In 4BBB Champs

June 24, 2022 by Short Putt

Mens 4BBB Stroke Champions Peter Dawson and John Betland receive their trophy from Events Committee Chairman
Warwick Judge.

Last Saturday saw the playing of the first Championship events for Forbes golfers, with players contending for the mens and ladies 4BBB Stroke and Handicap trophies.

In the mens event, the pairing of Peter Dawson and John Betland worked like clockwork, resulting in them scoring a 66 Scratch to take out the 4BBB Stroke Championship and in so doing repeat their win from 2021. The Runners-up were the paring of Harry Callaghan and Jacob Bernardi who raced around to score a level par 72.

The Handicap Winners were Harry Callaghan and Jacob Bernardi, who capitalised on the good stroke play to finish on 65 nett, with each contributing equally. Runners-up on 66 nett were the early starters of Rob Webb and Peter Tisdell, who managed to hit the ball straight in the thick fog.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Barry Parker, and 18th – Reggie Murray. The 3rd Hole Pro Shop Super-Pin went to Terry Griffiths.

The Sunday Stableford Medley had a small field with scores reflecting the difficulty to swing sweetly. Tom Toohey took the honours with 35 points, while Jordan Brett was Runner-up on 27 points. There were no NTP’s.

The Mens LVDGA Championships and Team events were held at Peak Hill on Sunday 19 June, with a disappointingly small field of 55 players.

In the Pennants the A-Grade was won by Forbes (192), the B-Grade by Trundle (138), Handicap by Trundle (192) and the Vets by Condo (73). The Mulder Cup for Individual Stroke play was won by Steve Betland (66) from John Betland (67). The B- Grade was won by C Matthews (Parkes) and the C-Grade by C Dyner (Peak Hill). John Betland took the ‘Champion of Champions’ honours, while Peter Dawson took the Vets Champion honours.

Next weekend we have the Foursomes Championships, played over two rounds for the men and 27-holes on Saturday for the ladies.

Tenacious U14’s Defeat Dubbo

June 24, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

It was a frantic game played in perfect winter conditions, the Dubbo Demons started full of fire before the Orange/Forbes Swamp Tigers were able to take the lead in the third quarter at Orange.

Dubbo took the Swamp Tigers by surprise with their physical play and ball movement to lead by thirteen points early in the first term before Orange/Forbes were able to settle and take a quarter time lead. Dubbo took control in the second term kicking three goals three to nil to take a fourteen point lead at half time. The third term was the complete opposite with Orange/Forbes kicking four goals three to one behind to lead by twelve points going into the last break. In the last quarter the game went to another level with both teams moving the ball, looking to score and take the win in a frantic finish. The final score was Orange/Forbes 8.8 (56), Dubbo 6.6 (42).

The under 12’s match was an equally absorbing affair. The Dubbo under 12’s kicked an early goal to lead by six. Tyson McLennan’s first AFL goal evened up the score soon after, but Dubbo took a narrow lead into the first break. The Swamp/Tigers kicked six goals and five behinds and kept Dubbo scoreless throughout the second and third terms. Dubbo rallied in the final quarter and kicked two early goals, but again Orange/Forbes were able to respond. The final score was Orange/Forbes 10.9 (69) to Dubbo’s 5.0 (30).

Tyson McLennan was awarded best on ground (BOG) for the under 12’s, while Will Northey, played strongly in defence, Max Ridge was dominant in the ruck and Romulus Milsom again played well. In the under 14’s Jackson Beaudin made it a dominant day for the FJAFL also being named BOG, while Zain Clark put in his best performance of the year in defence and was instrumental in their win.

In other games the Orange Youth Girls took out Dubbo 14.4 (88) to 2.2 (14), while in the under 17’s Orange/Forbes won 9.10 (64) to 0.2 (2).

This week Orange/Forbes take on the Giants in Bathurst.
