Dawson Blasts To Medal Win

October 27, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Men’s Monthly Medal played last Saturday was a true test of controlled ball flight in blustery wind conditions.
Peter Dawson won the A-grade on count back with nett 73. Runner-up was Stephen Uphill with 73 nett. The B-grade went to Ian Bown who returned a nett 72, and carried his partner to a keno win. Runner-up was Michael Browne with 73 nett.

The C-grade winner was Frank Hanns who had 70 nett – the best round of the day. Stuart French had nett 73 to finish runnerup. The ball sweep went to 77 nett on count back given to those above plus: 74 – D Bayley, D Earl; 75 – P Maher, S Kirkman; 76 – F Donohue, C McMillan, B Chandler; 77 – T Sharpe, M Woods (Orange) and A Borger.
The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Betland; 18th – M Woods.

The winner of Sunday’s Stableford Medley was Andy Dukes scoring 33 points. Unfortunately there was not enough of a field for any other balls. However, there were NTP’s – 9th A Dukes; 18th B Carpenter.

The Nissan Classic weekend, with a 4BBB will be on 12th November and an 18- hole stroke on the 13th. This event is so popular we need more carts. If you are not using your cart, or willing to share a seat, please let Daniel know.
The Forbz Skinz begins today, and on Sunday it is the Condobolin Open. We wish our Lachlan Valley Districts team
well at the Country Championships at Goulburn this weekend.

The Club Championships has been moved to 19th and 20th and 26th and 27th November.

Dragons Up And Paddling

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

017

Lachlan Dragons President, Robyn Stephens, recently attended the Dragon Boating Federation’s AGM in Sydney with Neil Stephens where a number of constitutional items needed to be ratified. Robyn is working well to keep the Dragons united in team spirit after so many missed sessions due to floodwaters. Debra Tooley and Deb Churchill have taken on the demanding role of regatta coordinators.

Bev Pengilly recently travelled to Orange to complete a full day Official’s Course, enabling her to officiate at regattas.
Our club is sadly missing Michael Ryan, but our drummer, Carmen Stephens, has been doing a fabulous job keeping us on track with her interim coaching. Both Carmen and Warren Edwards will attend a twoday coaching course in Orange. Sweep, Bill Thomas, takes the new dragon boat on its maiden voyage of Lake Forbes.

Two of our finest dedicated paddlers are soon off to Windsor to take up the challenge of the 65 km Wiseman’s Dash. Claire Davis and Helen Rowbotham are taking part in this inaugural classic, which is aiming to raise $400,000 for charity. If you’d like to support them with their fundraising go to https://give.everydayhero.com/au/kombodragon-
boat-team . All money must be in by this weekend.

One of our new boats has finally hit the water now that the floods have receded. If you’d like to be part of this great sport, you are most welcome to come and have a go. Find us on Facebook, or just come and meet us on Lake Forbes behind the Sport & Recreation Club at 8:15am Sundays or 5:45pm Thursdays.

Golf Course Open Again

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Last Saturday’s Individual Stableford attracted a field of 45 players who welcomed the opportunity to play on the surprisingly good greens and fairways after the floods. The winner was Andrew McDonald who produced a near flawless display to produce 42 points for the day. Runner-up was Matt Lawryk from Parkes with 39.

The ball sweep went to 34 points on count back, being distributed to those above plus: 38 – P Maher; 37 – P Duke, I Bown, R Morris; 36 – G Drane, A Grierson, C Barrett; 34 – S Sallaway, N Duncan. The NTP’s went to: 18th first – B Shine, 18th second – R Nixon. There were no 2’s scored.

There was one bona fide eagle scored on the 11th by Phil Maher. Phil’s drive drifted into the trees on the right, finishing near a trunk. Using his 2-iron, Phil punched a shot, which scorched out of the foliage, ran along the fairway, rose up the green, and dropped into the hole.

Once again the regular Sunday Stableford Medley crowd were out. The blustery conditions made it difficult to score well, but some players managed the wind well. The winner was Judy Hodge, with 36 points. The NTP’s went to: 18th first – J Hodge, 18th second – nobody. The FGA AGM will be held on Wednesday, 26th October at 6:30 pm. The first ‘Forbz Skinz’ competition starts on 28th October.

The Forbes Golf Classic is set for the weekend of 12th and 13th November.

Darcie Leads CSU Sevens to Gold

October 13, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

australian-uni-games-3

Forbes local Darcie Morrison is making a name for herself in the world of women’s rugby sevens. As captain of the Charles Sturt University (CSU) team she led by example at the 2016 Australian University Games in Perth. Her team won back-to-back titles in the competition without conceding a single game. Four teams competed for the title with
two full rounds played before the finals commenced. Darcie scored three tries per game on the first day and continued to clock points with a similar performance on the second day. CSU came up against Griffith University in the semi-finals and then took on James Cook University in the final match to claim the gold medal. Darcie was
unstoppable racking up five of the team’s six tries for the match and converted her last try on the bell.

Prior to the trip to Perth, Darcie was invited to attend the Australian Women’s Sevens camp in Narrabeen and was asked to play in one of two Australian Development teams to compete in the Central Coast Sevens Tournament in October with the hope of securing a contract.

The Rugby Sevens season is in full swing and Darcie will be playing in Noosa with the NSW Development team and also Byron Bay with the Sydney University team in the next two weeks before giving it her best shot to secure a spot in the Australian squad.

Charlie One Step Closer To His Dream!

September 22, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

charlie-staines

Year 10 student Charlie Staines took a step closer to achieving his dream this week when he signed a two-year NRL Player Development contract with the Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club.

NRL talent scouts have been watching Charlie for some time and the offer came after recommendations based on the skills and abilities Charlie has displayed in both club and representative football competitions.

Charlie will continue his schooling at Forbes High School for the next twelve months. The Panthers will assist with costs associated with any representative football he is involved in including the Western Rams and Country NSW. He will be provided with strength and conditioning, diet and training programs to further develop his talent over the year at which time he will be considered for a pre-season program in preparation for the inclusion in the Under 18 squad and possible relocation to Sydney.

Charlie attended and participated in training camps with the Cronulla Sharks and Canberra Raiders this year too. He and his family are taking everything in their stride, but they are excited by the prospects the signing will bring in the future. Charlie will compete with his local team, the Forbes Junior Magpies U16’s, in the grand final of the local competition in a couple of weeks before flying to Samoa to fulfil his representative commitments with the NSW Country side on the long weekend in October.

Grand Victory For Underdog Magpies

September 16, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Magpies put in an incredible performance to come from behind and win the Group XI Rugby League grand final in Dubbo 26 – 22 on Sunday. Taking on Dubbo CYMS, who have been undefeated for two seasons, was a daunting task for the Mapgies, but coaching coordinator Cameron Greenhalgh said this diasadvantage only ramped up the players’ enthusiasm.

“We were massive underdogs going in, but we knew that we had the side, we had the belief that we could win,” Greenhalgh said. With 12 minutes to go, CYMS had pulled out to a 10 point lead, but two tries in the final minutes gave Forbes the impressive victory.

Acknowledging that Forbes is sporting a very young team this year, Greenhalgh said it was difficult to single out top performers. “Our captain-coach Jake Grace won the Bob Weir Medal for man of the match, and he certainly led by example. “They were all excellent. They’re a young team, but have great confidence and big game performance,” Greenhalgh said.

Comeback Year For Platypi Ends At Grand Final

September 15, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Platypi Rugby Union team will travel to Orange tomorrow to take on the Emus after securing a grand final spot in the Blowes Clothing Cup. Forbes lost to Orange Emus two weeks ago in the major semi final, but vowed to be back for the grand final. They won their place after a muddy war of attrition against the Bathurst Bulldogs last
week 18-9.

The game was moved to Spooner Oval to avoid the encroaching floodwaters, and Forbes held up better in the muddy conditions to dominate defence and kept Bathurst try-less. The Bulldogs had so far experienced two tough wins in the two weeks prior, and while they managed to kick three penalties, they couldn’t crack the Platypi defence for a try.

Saturday’s grand final will cap off a stunning comeback year for Forbes, who last year only won two games all season.
The Forbes players are expecting to see a mass of blue and white at Endeavour Oval in Orange on Saturday to support the team. First grade kick off is 3.15pm.

Par-3 Aqua Golf A Winner

September 15, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s scheduled event, the Daine Doolin Memorial, was postponed yet again. However, Golf Pro Daniel organised the Inaugural Par-3 Aqua Golf Medley competition – a 6-hole, Par-54 layout utilising unorthodox tee positions to selected holes. Fifteen golfers rose to the challenge, proclaiming the event a most enjoyable and
successful venture. The Scratch winner was Peter Dawson with 56. The Handicap winner was Jill Cripps, with nett 45. The Handicap runner-up was Bob Borger with 46, getting there on count back.

The ball sweep went to 47 nett, being picked up by: 46 – B Drabsch and 47 – P Barnes. The NTP’s went to 9th- P Dawson and 18th – M Collits. There were eleven 2’s scored. Ecky Dawson scored three 2’s, each on different holes, and Doug Churchill scored two 2’s, also on separate holes.

Forbes Gold Club is taking part in Australia Golf Month in October when everyone can give golf a go. The 2016-17 Summer Sixes competition will begin competitive play in the week of 10th October. The GolfNSW Open Regional Qualifier, played over 36-holes, is set for 8th and 9th October. Tomorrow we will attempt to run the Daine
Doolin Memorial 4-BBB Stableford alongside the Cahill sponsored 4-BBB Stableford competition. Sunday 18th is the Stableford Medley, plus the Parkes Open. Saturday, 24th September is a 4-Ball Ambrose sponsored by Alby Callaghan, and Sunday 25th the Stableford Medley.

Ainslie Is Netball Club Person Of The Year

September 8, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

dsc_0243

Ainslie Toole is the Club Person of the Year of the Forbes Netball Association (FNA). Ainslie had made a huge impact in not only promoting netball in the community, but also lobbying politicians to get new netball courts in Forbes.

She started last year by securing a grant of $25,000 to re-build one court, and this year managed to commit politicians to $600,000 for the rebuilding of the Forbes netball complex. Senator Fiona Nash and Michael McCormack, Member for Riverina, promised earlier this year that if the Government were re-elected 12 new courts, eight with lights, would be built in Forbes.

Ainslie started lobbying when word got around that the FNA All Age carnival had to be cancelled as there were not enough playable courts for the large number of teams wanting to attend.

“It was very humbling and lovely to be recognised for the work I’ve done,” said Ainslie after receiving the award. “Our whole committee worked very hard to make positive changes. Our number one goal was to fix the courts.”

Ainslie joined the Forbes Netball Association Committee four years ago as registrar. During that time, she put the FNA on the map for online registrations by becoming the first netball association in the West/Central West to do so.

Ainslie stepped up to become President of the FNA two years ago, and whenever there was a politician in Forbes, she made sure to show them the unplayable state of the courts.

Ainslie had one message for parents: “The more involved you are in your childrens’ sport, the more fun you have.” She said it was a wonderful way to bond with kids. “I would really like to encourage parents to get involved to spend quality time with your kids.”
