JUST A SHORT DRIVE TO Lachlan Shire

May 23, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Escape To The Heart Of NSW

The Heart of NSW encompasses the local government area of the Lachlan Shire and is well known for its natural beauty and friendly and welcoming locals.
Condobolin is the largest town in the Lachlan Shire followed by Lake Cargelligo and Tottenham then the villages of Tullibigeal, Burcher, Derriwong, Albert and Fifield. All towns and villages have unique features and attractions to explore so start planning your next trip to see some of the most beautiful country in Australia.
Condobolin lies on the banks of the Lachlan River, an hour from Parkes, Forbes, West Wyalong and Lake Cargelligo.

Include in your travel itinerary, Gum Bend Lake, a man-made lake three kilometres from Condobolin and 1.75 metres deep when full. Gum Bend Lake is ideal for water skiing and also proves popular with bird watchers and fishing on the nearby Lachlan River.
Admire the Lachlan River, and put the Wiradjuri Study Centre, Mount Tilga, the Condobolin Railway Museum and Lachlander Museum on your to-do-list.
For lunch or dinner, the Condobolin RSL has a menu selection that will satisfy any taste bud. Enjoy the club’s live entertainment every Friday.
Lake Cargelligo is a quiet rural service town which lies on the banks of a delightful lake. It is surrounded by a prosperous pastoral district where wheat, wool, fat lambs, fruit and vegetables are produced.
Lake Cargelligo holds much to see and do. An ideal way to explore the town is to walk or cycle around the lake on the clearly marked walkway/cycleway. Lake Cargelligo is 8km long and 3.5km wide. While it is an ideal spot for yachting, fishing, water skiing and swimming, it is also a haven for birds.
There are also a number of historic markers around town identifying where the Wiradjuri get their ochre from; where the old gold stamper battery was located; the history of the local railway; and an historic wool wash out at Wooyeo Woolshed.
The Tourist Information Centre in Foster Street is home to the Alf Tyack Stone, Butterfly and Gem Collection, which is one of the main attractions for visitors.
Hargrave Rural Traders is the go-to-place for a great range of services, including real estate sales, livestock sales and rural merchandise sales. Cargelligo Auto Parts has all your car part and accessory needs.
For hotel style accommodation and daily bistro specials, call in at the Commercial Hotel. Your hosts are Graham and Sue Hill.

Just a Short Drive to… Condobolin

April 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

With the school holidays on now why not take a short trip to the Lachlan Shire. Located in the heart of NSW, it is well known for its natural beauty, friendly and welcoming locals and relaxed bush lifestyle.

The towns in the shire capture the essence of life in the bush. Condobolin is the largest town with a population of almost 4,000, followed by Lake Cargelligo and Tottenham and then the villages of Tullibigeal, Burcher, Albert and Fifield.

Condo is home to singer Shannon Noll. He filmed the video clip for his first single, What About Me?, in Condo.

Condo, as it is commonly known, is the home of the Karie people with the lower Lachlan region considered to be the heartbeat of the Wiradjuri Nation. The Wiradjuri people are also known as the people of the three rivers. They have inhabited modern day NSW for at least 40,000 years.

The Wiradjuri Cultural Centre is located on the corner of Cunningham Street and McDonnell Street in Condobolin. It was constructed for the express purpose of promoting the study and understanding of Wiradjuri culture. The centre offers a local hub for training, development, employment, cultural appreciation and cultural awareness. There is also an art gallery and a yarn up space for visitors to gather and enjoy the environment. Local Aboriginal art and products are available for purchase from the gallery.

Another attraction Condo is famous for is the Utes in the Paddock, an outdoor gallery located 3km down the Mulguthrie Road near Ootha. Various models of Holden utes act as a canvas for the completion of high quality ute works that celebrate bush life in Australia. The collection features some of Australia’s best known artists including John Murray, Shane Gehlert, Peter Brown, Adaum Cullen and Condo’s own local artist Karen Tooth. Lachlan Shire is looking to locate the utes to a more high profile location in the near future.

When we travelled to Condo to meet with the locals we were really pleased with how welcoming and supportive they were, and I have heard this from many people about the great spirit of this town and the other towns in the Lachlan Shire. It is certainly well worth a visit, and if you get there around coffee time why not head to Café Romo, which is a quirky little coffee shop in the main street, with a great friendly atmosphere and most importantly, good coffee and food.

We also loved the little boutique in Bathurst St, Yours and Mine Vogue which had amazing clothes and jewellery.

Take the time to visit this amazing Shire it is well worth the drive to visit and see some of the amazing places and scenery just 100kms from Forbes.

Lachlan Shire – The Essence Of Life In The Bush

With the school holidays starting today why not take a short trip to the Lachlan Shire.

The Wiradjuri people are also know as the people of the three rivers. They have inhabited modern day NSW for at least 40,000 years.

At the time of European colonisation, there were an estimated 3,000 Wiradjuri living in the region. This country extends from the Great Dividing Range in the east and is bordered by the Macquarie, Lachlan and Murrumbidgee Rivers.

The Wiradjuri nation is the largest in NSW and second largest geographically in Australia. Lachlan Shire Council is positioned in Wiradjuri Country with one in six people identifying as Aboriginal.

The Wiradjuri Cultural Centre is located on the corner of Cunningham Street and McDonnell Street in Condobolin. It was constructed for the express purpose of promoting the study and understanding of Wiradjuri culture. The centre offers a lo- cal hub for training, development, employ- ment, cultural appreciation and cultural awareness. There is also an art gallery and a yarn up space for visitors to gather and enjoy the environment. Local Aboriginal art and products are available for purchase from the gallery.

The Western Plains Regional Development building houses a traditional basket weaving display made by local artist Bev Coe. Also on display are stone artefacts collected by local man Stan Dodgson and a permanent display of Aboriginal family history, which will be of interest to history buffs.

Another attraction Condo is famous for is the Utes in the Paddock, an outdoor gallery located 3km down the Mulguthrie Road near Ootha. Various models of Holden utes act as a canvas for the completion of high quality uteworks that celebrate bush life in Australia. The collection features some of Australia’s best known artists including

John Murray, Shane Gehlert, Peter Brown, Adaum Cullen and Codo’s own local artist Karen Tooth. Lachlan Shire is looking to locate the utes to a more high profile location in the near future.

Sleeping under the stars is a part life in the Lachlan Shire and with the amazing night skies, you will not be disappointed. Whether it’s pitching a tent, setting up a camper trailer or experiencing the cara- van or motorhome camp experience, the Lachlan Shire caters for all visitors includ- ing freedom campers at Gumbend Lake in Condo, Dead Man’s Point and Frogs Hollow in Lake Cargelligo to name a few. There are many caravan parks to choose from, including Gum Bend at Condo, and Frogs Hollow at Lake Cargelligo. All towns and villages are RV friendly.

There are also motels and hotels for ac- commodation. The Lake Cargelligo Motel is a small 10 room motel run by local couple Mark and Ingrid Stenhouse and is within easy walking distance of the main street and shops.

Lake Cargelligo is an unexpected oasis in central NSW and its beauty and tran- quility has remained unspoilt. It’s a perfect place to stop, stay and indulge in a range of wonderful water activities including ski- ing, sailing, fishing, jet skiing, canoeing and swimming.

It is a spectacular location and the show- piece of the largest inland lake system in NSW with a volume of 36,000 mega litres, a surface area of 1,440 hectares and an average depth of 3.7 metres. Part of Lake Cargelligo is a bird sanctuary, making it very popular for bird watching.

There are around 230 bird species in the Lachlan Shire of which 60 species visit on annual migrations.

The inland rivers and lakes provide some of the best fresh water angling in the region with sought after species such as Murray cod. Golden and silver perch, redfin and catfish are also a big attraction for many catch and release anglers. Many of the riverbanks in the area are shaded by tall red gum trees, many of which have Aboriginal scars and markings.

There are a range of museums in both Condo and Lake Cargelligo, including the Condo Historical Museum, the Condo Railway Museum and the Lake Cargel- ligo Historical Society Museum. The Condo Community Centre Craft shop offers handmade craft items, souvenirs and locally made relish, jam and pickles.

In Condo you have a variety of places to choose from to have a meal or just a coffee. Café Romo is a quirky little coffee shop in the main street with a friendly atmosphere and most importantly, good coffee.

Another place to drop in for a bite is the Condo RSL, which has specials each day of the week in its Bistro as well as offering TAB, Keno and Sky and Fox Channels for the sporting enthusiasts.

If you have time for shopping you will find a good variety from a flower shop with lots of extras to furniture, gifts and home- wares, watches and jewellery.

There is lots to discover in the Lachlan Shire.

A 23357

For those interested in taking a weekend trip, a day trip, or even an extended trip to somewhere that offers something different and unique, Temora is the town to visit.

The Riverina town, best-known for it’s impressive aviation museum, lies 164km south of Forbes and takes approximately 1:45 hours to reach via the Newell Highway. The population of Temora is about 6,000.

Temora is packed with museums, sporting and recreational facilities, boasts a boutique cinema, and a thriving town centre, all surrounded by natural beauty. A visit this time of year would see a drier outlook, but temperatures into the 30s provide warm and sunny conditions for all purposes to visit Temora.

Temperatures in Autumn and Spring are very comfortable, sitting around the mid-20s, and the colours around town normally stay green with local agricultural growth, and even yellow when canola growing peaks. Colourful seasonal trees and plants are on show in Autumn as leaves start to fall.

Winter sees temperatures drop into the teens, but with so many museums and
shops to visit, it is still well worth the trip. Do yourself a favour and plan your next weekend visit to Temora, with so much beauty and the friendly faces of the town it’s well worth the visit.

Temora Aviation Museum Arguably Temora’s top attraction is the Temora
Aviation Museum, and this comes from the town’s rich aviation history.

Aviation activities such as gliding, parachuting, aerobatics, ultra-light aircraft operations and model aircraft displays are still held in town. The museum is located next door to the airport on Tom Moon Avenue, north of the town centre off Airport Street.

volunteers, audio-visual presentations, a theatre, engineer viewing, a gift shop,
playground, garden and picnic areas, and the ‘Aircraft Showcase’. The museum is open daily between 10am and 4pm.

Temora Rural Museum Another one of Temora’s popular tourist attractions is the Temora Rural Museum and Temora Ambulance Museum. The museum’s major annual exhibition is the second Saturday of March each year, with this year’s 43rd annual exhibition coming up very soon on March 12. It will feature a grand parade of vintage and veteran motor vehicles, tractors and machinery, a millinery exhibition from the Temora Rural Museum and Robbins’ Collections, bush poetry and short talks on textiles, a fire fighting demonstration, and the startup of the Max Fairweather Lister Stationary Engine Collection.

The museum is located at 29 Junee Road, and is open daily 9.30am-5pm.

2016 Colin Parish Memorial Trophy Temora’s Lake Centenary will be lit up
when the V8 Superboats sail into town for the 2016 Colin Parish Memorial Trophy on Saturday March 5. The event is run by the Australian Formula
Jet Sprint Association, and will feature boats in three classes- the 350 class, 400 class, and unlimited class.

The V8 Group A 400 and 350 classes of jet-sprinting have engines that are mildly restricted to ensure a reasonably equitable playing field for all competitors. The V8 unlimited class features top class superboats of racing in jet-sprinting with the boats being unrestricted except for a minimum engine size and controlled methanol fuel. V8 Superboat Engines are unrestricted
and vary depending on the design concept behind them. The event kicks off at 10:30am. ‘New Fashion’ Ladies Clothes and Accessories. Call in and see our new winter range arriving weekly.
