Fireworks, Fairy Floss And Fun At The 143rd Forbes Show

September 13, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Show was blessed with perfect weather last weekend with many people coming through the gates to enjoy the attractions, competitions and events.

“A great community event was held and whilst the rain held off it is more than welcome to ‘come on down’ anytime from now on in,” said Forbes Show president Doug Nadin.

Whilst most of us are still reminiscing about the show just past, the Forbes Show committee has already started working on next year’s event.

“Plans are already in place to make the 144th Forbes Show even bigger and better.

“Thank you to all the competitors, exhibitors, indoor and outdoor trade displays and all the businesses and individuals who supported the Show through sponsorship. We look forward to working with you all in 2019,” said Doug.

In true Forbes style, the town once again came together in supporting its community.

“Without a doubt the most support has come from the community of Forbes and the surrounding district. Congratulate yourselves for supporting your Forbes Show!” said Doug.

The dog high jump events and farmers’ challenge both proved to be very popular again this year and the centre ring was full of horses all weekend with show jumping competitions.

The winner of the 2018 Forbes Showgirl competition was Sally Downie, the Junior Miss Showgirl title was presented to Ru Little, Tiny Tot winner was Isabel Pearce and Master Stockman went to Thomas Vonthien.

Ankle Sprains

September 13, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Lateral ligament sprains of the ankle are one of the most common sports injuries, and because they are so common they are often managed too casually and many go untreated. From a clinical point of view the problem with a lateral ligament sprain of the ankle is that they have a very high incidence of recurrence. Gribble et al, 2016, Attenborough et al, 2015 and Tanen et al, 2014 (references can be supplied upon request), found 30-50% of the athletic population and 20% of the general population will go on to suffer from chronic ankle symptoms. These symptoms are often referred to as chronic ankle instability and include pain, swelling, laxity and instability.

The contributing factors to the development of chronic ankle instability include:

not seeking medical attention for the primary lateral ankle sprain; and returning to sport when pain has decreased but function has not been fully restored. The absence of pain does not mean that you are ready to return to sport. Decreases in strength, range of movement, proprioception and balance need to be restored.

Doherty et al, 2016 found that exercise therapy when performed in high doses (5 x 30 mins per week for six weeks) reduced the chances of recurrent lateral ligament sprains in the ankle by 42% and bracing/taping reduced the risk by 62%. It is currently recommended that you brace or tape your ankle for every game and training session for at least six weeks.

The decision to return to sport after a lateral ligament sprain should be based on strength, balance and hop tests rather than time or absence of pain.

Meet And Greet Lachlan Valley Community Radio

September 13, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Lachlan Valley Community Radio is having an open day on Sunday, 23rd September at 11am at their studios on Parkes Road, Forbes. The entire community is invited to come along and show support for ‘your local station’.

This is the perfect opportunity to have a look at the station’s studios, say “hello” to the announcers and put a face to the voice.

There will be a sausage sizzle, as well as plenty of finger food, cakes, slices, tea and coffee.

Please RSVP by Thursday, 20th September to 0428 662 549 or 0498 132 758. Alternatively send an email to: a97.9fm@outlook.com.

The station was established in 1992 for the purpose of presenting alternative music and news programs to those presented by the ABC and other commercial radio stations.

The studio is based in Forbes and the listening area is predominately the Forbes and Parkes Shire area, including all other surrounding areas.

The station is completely run by volunteer staff, with the exception of one part-time office lady. There are around 28 volunteers on the announcing staff who do regular time slots each week. The announcers provide 15 hours of live programs each day, all voluntary. The total volunteer force is around 35 members.

Keeping the station on air is very costly. There are many licenses and permits required to comply with all government regulations, including other running costs.

The station’s main source of income comes from sponsors who advertise on the station. The annual member’s contribution also helps keep them afloat. Why not become a member? Membership is very cheap at only $10 per year or $15 per couple.

They are also always looking for sponsors support. Your advertising has the potential to reach a listening audience of around 30,000 people at a very reasonable cost.

Please contact the station if you would like more information.

Inspiring Future Generations Through Cultural Education

September 6, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Aboriginal culture and history were celebrated at the annual Forbes Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre NAIDOC Day held on Monday. The Forbes Indigenous community were joined in their festivities by various local schools, community members and service providers.

This year’s event was held under the NAIDOC theme ‘Because of her, we can!’. The theme celebrates the essential role that women have played – and continue to play – as active and significant role models at community, local, state and national level.

The celebrations were started off with a smoking ceremony, an ancient custom among Aboriginal Australians in which native plants are burnt to produce smoke to pay respect to the land of country. The smoke is believed to have healing and cleansing properties.

Proving to be very popular, especially among the children who attended, were traditional dances performed by the Lore men from the local Wiradjuri tribe Yarangirri Holmes, Uncle Kyle Baxter and Uncle Blake Baxter. Traditional dances generally portray battles, hunting and animals which were both prey and totems. Children who volunteered, were lucky enough to participate in some of the dancing activities.

The Forbes North Wiradjuri choir also performed and there were many activities to educate attendees about Indigenous culture and history.

The event also included traditional bush tucker, Indigenous games and much more. Forbes Shire Council will be hosting a NAIDOC Day, celebrating the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on Wednesday, 12th September from 10:30am to 1:30pm at South Circle Oval.
