Market Day Success For Forbes Public School

November 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Public Primary School was blessed with beautifully bright and sunny skies at their fourth annual school market day hosted by the P&C on the school’s oval last Saturday. With thorough planning and preparation the market day had all the makings of a successful event, which it certainly turned out to be!

Approximately 1,800 people attended the event to browse the more than 70 high quality stalls from across the Central West region on display at the market.

Children also had lots to do with all the fun activities available to keep them occupied while parents could do some shopping.

The Game Zone and jumping castle was a hive of activity. By the amount of little butterflies, tigers and fairies running around it was clear that the face painting once again proved to be a favourite among the children. There were also many with pink, blue or green hair, after clearly finding the hairspray stall.

Singers and musicians kept the crowds entertained and Kristen’s Dance Studio and Kumiai Ryu Forbes put on very engaging demonstrations.

Raffles were drawn on the day with the very impressive first prize of an YCF 50A Two Wheeler 50cc going to Jono Webb; second prize was a BBQ basket won by Jess Walsh and third prize was a family hamper taken by Patrick Dooley.

This event is the school’s major fundraiser for the year and this time round they managed to raise more than $5,000 for the school.

Showtime For Spectacular Students

November 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Eight students from the Forbes High School Support Unit were selected to form part of a section in the School Spectacular, namely D’Arts Ensemble, which specifically caters for students with special needs.

All the students were extremely excited when they recently received their School Spectacular bag and cap.

The school’s support unit staff, students and parents/carers of the students attending the Spectacular have all been amazed at the overwhelming response received from local community groups and local businesses. Their major sponsors include Evolution Mining ($2,000), RSL Club ($1,200), Lions Club ($1,000) and Ipomea (Rotary) Club ($500). The donations have lessened the students’ total expenses by an astonishing 65 percent. They have also each received a School Spectacular shirt, bag and cap which will be extremely useful during their week in Sydney.

They are in Sydney this week until tomorrow, and will be doing four separate performances at Qudos Bank Arena. They will be performing a surprise dance that may not be revealed until the first performance today.

Anyone wanting to watch the show can do so when it is televised the following week on Saturday, 1st December on Channel 7.

Swimmer’s Shoulder Part 1

November 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

With the weather warming up swimming is an ideal way to get a full body workout.

Overuse injuries in the shoulder and neck are common though, due to the repetitive nature of swimming.

The shoulder is a ball and socket joint with a ring of cartilage around the socket to make the joint more stable. Around this is a loose joint capsule that is reinforced with ligaments and muscles. Because the shoulder is a very mobile joint it relies on the action of these muscles and ligaments to maintain stability. These muscles are called the rotator cuff and consist of four muscles that work together to keep your shoulder centred in its socket.

So, if swimming strengthens the shoulder muscles why do so many swimmers have shoulder problems?

The simple answer is due to the repetitive nature of swimming. The more complex answer lies in the fact that many swimmers don’t have good stroke technique and those that do can still have problems because the swim stroke (in particular freestyle), mainly strengthens the shoulder internal rotators and adductors. This causes muscle imbalance, leaving the scapular stabilisers and external rotators relatively weak and joint laxity increases. The rotator cuff then must work harder to keep the shoulder centred in the socket. When the already relatively weakened external rotators fatigue, the ball of the shoulder joint moves forward and the tendon of the rotator cuff muscles is pinched between the bones as the hand is raised above shoulder height.

Next column I will cover some practical ways to prevent this happening and what to do if you already have impingement problems.

For the fitness of you.

Linda Reilly
