Governor Beazley’s Tour Of Forbes

February 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Mens Shed Flag Ceremony: Shooters Party NSW MP Phil Donato, Governor Margaret Beazley and Forbes Men’s Shed President Norm Haley.

It may have been a whirlwind visit and the first to the region since COVID struck, but NSW Governor, Her Excellency, Margaret Beazley AC QC more than made up for it with numerous stopovers on her tour.

“Dennis and I are pleased to be back on the road and delighted to be in the Central West,” the Governor said.

“This is our first multi-day regional visit after a long pause because of COVID and we were interested to hear how the past months have impacted on the diverse economy of the region and the day to day lives of local people.”

In Forbes, the Governor and Mr Wilson met with members of the Men’s Shed to discuss the latest developments after successful grants applications enabled the group to expand. This was followed by an intimate and enjoyable Community Lunch in Wheogo Park put on by Isabel’s Place, a visit to the Platypus Gallery, and tour of the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre in what was a real highlight of the day. The Aussie Biscuit Factory rounded off the day for the Governor with a behind the scenes look at the organisation.

The Governor was accompanied by partner Dennis Wilson and Shooters Party State MP Phil Donato also attended. Governor Beazley also met other key community stakeholders as well as recipients from the recent Australia Day awards ceremony.

Mr. Wilson spoke fondly of the Central West having spent time during his youth in Dubbo, often playing sport against teams from Forbes.

“I have been fortunate enough to spend a good portion of my life in the Central West and I am always extremely impressed by the people and the hospitality every time I come here,” he said.

“Forbes is a wonderful, progressive and beautiful town and you should all be extremely proud,” said Mr. Wilson, echoing the words of Her Excellency.

“People out here are resilient, resourceful and incredible. Living in rural Australia isn’t easy but places like Forbes despite their remote location, are thriving and are a great advertisement for country living,” he said.

The Vice-Regal couple also visited Parkes and Condobolin during their quick tour chatting with local businesses, schools and finishing off with a day out at the Condobolin Picnic Races on Saturday, 20 February before returning to Government House in Sydney to resume normal duties on behalf of the state.

“We have had a tremendous time with fond memories and we can’t wait to return,” Her Excellency said.

Forbes Soccer Club Scores Big With Two Local Sporting Grants

February 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Member for Orange, Phil Donato MP

Member for Orange, Phil Donato MP, on Monday, 22 February announced successful funding for the Forbes and District Soccer Club (the Club) under the Local Sporting Grant Program 2019/20.

A total of $13,300 in grants funding has been awarded to the Club for two projects, both of which Phil Donato MP deemed particularly worthy of support.

“The Club will be implementing a pathways program for the development of female players, for which they requested $2,000 and received full funding,” Mr Donato explained . “The larger grant of $11,300 was for a First Aid Injury Recovery Treatment Room, which will be an important as-set when it comes to the safety of players.

“The Club has shown great initiative and rather than building a new Treatment Room they are actually converting an unused storage space at the Botanical Gardens.”

“It was a pleasure to support this grant, which was submitted by the members of the Forbes Soccer Club,” said Mr Donato.

Club Secretary Doug McKenzie said that he was pleased to have received the funding, and was eager to see the project completed in the near future.

Applications Now Open For Y NSW Youth Parliament

February 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

APPLICATIONS OPEN: Former NSW Youth Parliament participant, Hamani Tanginoa.

Calling all future Bairds, Berejiklians, Wrans and Carrs! Applications are now open for the YMCA NSW (Y NSW) Youth Parliament: the state’s premier youth political empowerment program.

Aimed at young people in years 10, 11 and 12 or equivalent age, Y NSW Youth Parliament provides a platform for young people to have their voices heard through legislative debate and decision making.

The Y NSW is seeking representatives from all 93 NSW State Electorates to participate. Y NSW CEO Susannah Le Bron said it was exciting to be back following the program’s suspension in 2020 due to the pandemic.

“COVID-19 has brought the direct impact of political decisions on young people’s lives and futures sharply into focus,” Mrs Le Bron said. “There’s never been a more important time for young people to stand up and be heard, and the Y is incredibly proud as an organisation to bring these voices directly to the seat of power in NSW.”

Youth Parliament consists of an eight-day camp where participants are split in committees and develop policy positions ahead of a day of debate on the floor of NSW Parliament. Following the event, passed bills are formally presented to the NSW Government.

Since its beginning in 2002, approximately six pieces of Y NSW Youth Parliament youth legislation have been passed into NSW Law, including the recent Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme.

Former NSW Youth Parliament participant, Hamani Tanginoa, encouraged young people across the state to apply.

Applications are open now and will close March 12 at 5pm. Young people will be notified of the outcome of their application on March 22 ahead of an online introduction to the program on April 26 and finally, Residential Camp from July 3 to Saturday, 10 July. For more information, or to apply, visit: www.ymcansw.org.au/community-services/youth/youth-parliament/

Mayoral Notes

February 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

This week General Manager, Steve Loane and myself have gone to the NSW Associated Mining & Energy Related Council meeting in Wollongong which is always interesting. The renewable energy sector is really gaining momentum in our region. The NSW Government is implementing three Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) pi-lots throughout NSW and one of them is the 3,000 megawatt REZ in the Central West of NSW. This is great for our local economies and for jobs in the regions as well. We have two solar farms in the Forbes Shire and potential for others as well.

In last week’s Council Meeting it was raised the need for upgrades to our town security. The program of 50 new CCTV cameras will soon to be rolled out through-out Forbes. The cameras will have a direct relay to our local police station who can then quickly action staff to respond to incidents.

We have also started renovations in Town Hall. This will see a variety of upgrades to this beautiful Heritage building. New light-ing, kitchen and bar area as well as a new floor in the concourse. We remind everyone the Town Hall may be out of action for a while but please contact Council’s Event Officer if you are looking for a space to hold your next function or event we have a few suggested venues that may serve your purpose.

Till next week. God Bless.
Your Mayor,
Phyllis Miller

Calling On Forbes Shire Schools To Bee-Come Environmental Champions

February 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

BEE-COMING BEE SMART: Woolworths Debbie Rad-burn promoting the Bee Bonus grant for Forbes Shire education and learning centres.

Applications for the 2021 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants Program are now open for Forbes Shire.

Primary schools and early learning centres across Forbes Shire can also apply for a Bee Bonus, as part of a $1.5million investment by Woolworths into the program. Up to one thousand Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants are being offered, for up to $1,000 each.

Recipients in Forbes Shire can use the grant to grow a vegetable or bush tucker garden, composting, worm farm or other environmental projects in their schools and communities, helping to educate the younger generation about the importance of the environment.

Primary schools and early learning centres can also apply for a Bee Bonus, in addition to the $1,000 grant. The Bee Bonus offers $500 of extra funding to support the conservation of Australia’s bees.

An estimated 15.6 million hectares of native Australian forest was destroyed in the 2019-2020 bushfire crisis, resulting in a negative impact on the ability of honey bees to provide pollination services to Australian crops and horticulture.

Woolworths Forbes Store Manager Noel Reardon said: “Our Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants Program is all about inspiring Aussie environmental champions in Forbes Shire. The Bee Bonus puts the spotlight on the impact honey bees and native bees have on our ecosystem, creating awareness and encouraging positive action.

“The grants help deliver programs that not only educate younger generations on how to be more environmentally conscious, but also get Forbes Shire students hands-on and directly supporting the growth of a sustainable, greener future.

“If we work together, we can help support growth of flora and fauna so that bees can continue their vital role in supporting our agricultural systems and improving biodiversity.”

Applications for Woolworths’ Junior Landcare Grants are open from 10 February. To find out more visit landcareaustralia.org.au/woolworthsgrants

Peewee Pete Ruffles Feathers At Library: You could be forgiven for thinking it was a Hitchcock film but for a brief moment it’s exactly how it appeared as a wayward magpie-lark (peewee) flew off-course and ventured into the Forbes Library.

“The young bird must have felt the library was a suitable place to roost for he proceeded to take refuge way out of reach on top of the window blinds in the high-ceilinged computer room, ignoring all entreaties for him to vacate the building,” explained Bronwyn Clark, Forbes branch librarian exclusively to the Phoenix.

A phone call to the Forbes Council soon saw the Rangers arrive on the scene then patiently persevered until finally Peewee Pete, was out manoeuvred by Ranger Mat Wallis, who in the end caught young Pete and then gently carried him out and released him back into the park to join his friends. “A big thanks to the rangers for all their help in the safe capture and release of our friend.”

Forbes Council Ranger Mat Wallis remains valiantly undaunted in his quest to net the library’s wayward feathered visitor Peewee Pete.

Bushfire Prediction Tech To Bolster Emergency Response Efforts

February 19, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Australia will develop a nationally consistent bushfire modelling and prediction capability under an agreement announced between CSIRO, AFAC and the National Council for Fire and Emergency Services.

The partnership involves the development of Spark Operational, a cutting-edge bushfire simulation tool based on CSIRO’s ‘Spark’ fire prediction platform.

Fire and emergency services agencies across Australia will be able to use Spark Operational, opening bushfire prediction opportunities across borders and over different landscapes.

CSIRO’s Spark platform combines current fire behaviour knowledge with state-of-the-art simulation science to produce predictions, statistics and visualisations of bushfire spread, as well as simulating hours of fire spread across a landscape in a matter of seconds.

AFAC’s Fire Prediction Services Group will work with CSIRO to improve existing technology and build a national system that allows for consistent bushfire predictions to support emergency service and response teams across borders.

Phase one of the technology’s implementation commenced January 2021, with further developments over the next three years.

CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall said the innovation built on decades of expertise. “Our solutions from science have protected Australians from the threat of bushfires for over 70 years, from roadside fire danger signs to advanced burn over protection materials,” Dr Marshall said.

“But 2020 changed the game forever. So, we have changed our game too, by unleashing new science and technology to protect our firefighters and Australian communities.

“We believe this advanced system will help firefighters outthink fire, to anticipate its actions, and to get ahead of it, so they can beat it.”
