Our Bloke – Chris Roylance

July 9, 2015 By Maggi Barnard

Chris Roylance Forbes Shire Councillor and Managing Director of Roylance’s Automotive, Industrial, Earth-Moving & Mining.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes? All my life — since 1955.
What do you love most about your work? Every day is a challenge and there’s always a new problem to tackle, whether it’s working for Roylance’s or for the Forbes Shire.
How do you start your day? My day starts at 5am with the morning news and a mug or two of tea. Then it’s into the emails and off to work as quickly as I can.
What do you do in your spare time? Spare time is rare, but I spend as much as I can
with the grandkids and the rest of the family, or travelling with Deb. But a game of golf is rewarding, especially since the Forbes course has been revitalised.
How do you like your coffee? A mug of cappucinno is good, but mostly I drink tea all day.
What makes your day? When everything I have been trying to achieve comes to fruition. But if it doesn’t I’m content to try another day.

KMWL Grows further across the Central West

July 9, 2015 By Maggi Barnard

Well known agency Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon & Co (KMWL) has undergone significant growth in the past year, extending the business to include weekly prime cattle and sheep sales at the Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange (CTLX) at Carcoar.

While KMWL has been participating in monthly store cattle sales at CTLX for the last few years, interest from Central Tablelands cattle and sheep producers has seen the company incorporate the weekly prime sales into its selling program. The CTLX sales are in addition to the company’s weekly prime cattle and sheep & lamb sales at the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange (CWLE). Together with KMWL founder Kevin Miller, partners Luke Whitty and Matt Lennon and the company’s extended staff, the KMWL team offers an unmatched level of experience
and service in the cattle and sheep industries.

All KMWL staff go the extra mile to achieve the best results for their clients, whether that be inspecting stock on property to assess the best marketing option prior to sale, drafting stock into the most appropriate lines to maximise value, or obtaining the best price available for over the hook consignments, private sale, AuctionsPlus, as well as weekly auctions sales at CTLX and CWLE. The highly skilled team at KMWL is proud to offer its services to producers across Central and Western NSW.

Rural Round Up

July 9, 2015 By Maggi Barnard

With the countryside looking a picture at the moment, following on from good rains, all that is needed now is some good spring rains to record a bumper season. Lambs have come down slightly in price as we wait for the new season sucker lambs to start coming through, which wont be far away. This is a good time of the year to be getting ready for harvest, ensuring all your machinery is serviced, and ready for spraying and harvest, as well as a good time to catch up on some fencing, as well as stock work. You need to ensure that your stock are prepared for the green feed coming through.

Green crops and pastures, such as lucerne, forage oats/barley & wheat become predominant at this time of year. These types of feeds can be very successful in terms of maximizing health returns if the livestock consuming them are prepared in both health and nutrition. Here are some tips for your stock for this month.

Vaccinate
Prior to placing livestock on green feed, vaccinating stock with a clostridial (5in1/6in1) is extremely important. Pulpy kidney is a leading cause of death in stock that are faced with a sudden change in feed. Changes in feed allow the pulpy kidney organisms to proliferate and produce large quantities of toxins, leading to the rapid death of the
animal. Vaccinating is a very cost effective form of insurance for the health of your stock.

Drench
Ensuring your livestock are free of worms before placing them on green feed will maximize the utilisation of the feed. Worm burdens place a large amount of stress on an animal’s immune system, their ability to convert feed to weight and/or milk, if lactacting, is severely impaired this leads to significant feed wastage and productivity loss. However,
prior to drenching it is recommended that you do a worm test to determine the burden and the type of worms present. This allows for a more specific selection of drench (if needed at all) and reduces the risk of developing drench resistance. Three types of worm test kits are available in store at CRT AgriWest, with varying levels of testing capabilities.

Nutrition
On the surface, green feeds and fodder crops appear to contain reasonable quantities of both energy and protein. However, there are inherent problems. If not carefully managed, this can result in a reduction in Feed Conversion Efficiency (FCE), significant wastage of feeds as well as lead to animals showing primary signs associated with scours, bloat and grass tetany, and in severe cases, death. Providing livestock with a source of starch is a very effective method of combating the negative effects associated with grazing lush, green feed. Using specialised starch-based loose licks are a fantastic, simple and very cost effective method of delivering starch & all the required vitamins & minerals to the rumen, while reducing the incidence of green feed related problems. Adopting these few actions will have you well on the way to ensuring your stock don’t just survive but thrive on green feed this winter. For more information, come in and see the friendly staff at Agriwest today.

Narromine visit nets mixed bag for Platypi

July 9, 2015 By Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Platypi travelled to Narromine last weekend and came home with a mixed bag of results in the Blowes Clothing Cup. The Firsts lost a very close tussle 27-24 and sit in seventh place on the competition ladder, too far adrift of Mudgee and Dubbo Kangaroos to make the finals.

The Seconds, however, sit in fifth spot following their 27-12 win over the Red-and- Whites. They’re just a point clear of Dubbo Kangaroos, and have a tough match next Saturday against ladder leaders Orange City.

The Platypi Colts were soundly beaten 65-0 by Narromine and languish near the bottom of the competition ladder with just 9 points from their 11 games. Tomorrow, all three sides will host Orange at Grinsted Park, in Forbes’ South Circle Park.

Stirling and Drabsch add handicap honours to their 4BBB scratch title

July 9, 2015 By Maggi Barnard

Winners of the Forbes Golf Club’s annual ladies’ 4BBB Handicap Championships, sponsored by Carolyn Duncan, have been decided after a play-off, with Kerry Stirling and Barbara Drabsch up against Janet Smith and Debbie Dingwall. It was a very close match that wasn’t really decided until the last hole when Kerry holed a huge putt for a birdie, which gave her and Barbara a one-stroke win, 68 to 69 nett.” “We were very even the whole way,” said
Kerry.

“There was never more than a shot or two in it, and Janet and Debbie were ahead by a single shot at the turn. “I guess we were lucky that both of them hit into the water on the 15th, but even so it did come down to the putts on the 18th. I hit a good one and luckily it fell in the cup.” Kerry and Barbara had earlier won the club’s 4BBB Scratch Championships.

On Wednesday July 1, the ladies held the fifth round of the GNSW Monthly Medal and putting competition, an 18-hole stroke event sponsored by Bernardis IGA. Division 1 winner was Fran Smith (74 nett), with runner-up Colleen Venables (76 nett). Division 2 winner was Marie Reid (72 nett) on a countback from runner-up Fae Grogan (also 72 nett). Nearest the pins were: 9th Enid Baker; 18th Bev Gerdes. Monthly Medal winners: Division 1, F Smith;
Division 2, M Reid; Division 3, T Armitage on countback.

On Saturday July 4, the competition was a 4BBB par event sponsored by J Hubbard and L Godden. The sisters combination of Bess Shields and E Coombs were the winners with +9. Next best were Janet Smith and Margaret
Bentick with +8. Nearest the pins were: 9th J Fletcher; 18th E Hush.

It’s shaping as a golden season for the Magpies

July 9, 2015 By Maggi Barnard

It’s starting to look like a wonderful season for the Forbes Magpies in the Group 11 rugby league competition, with the Reserve Grade and Under 18 sides both sitting on top of their ladders and the First Grade team coming
third. The situation was reinforced last Sunday by dominant performances at home against Nyngan.

The First Grade side won 31-12, and sits on 18 points behind Dubbo CYMS and Parkes. They have to keep winning, though, to stay ahead of Wellington and Dubbo Westside. The Reserves won 40-22, putting them on top of the ladder with 22 points, just ahead of Dubbo CYMS and Dubbo Westside on 20. The Under 18s scored plenty of points to easily account for the Nyngan lads 42-14.

They sit at the head of the table on 23 points, ahead of Wellington, Parkes, Dubbo CYMS and Dubbo Macquarie in an extremely tight race. All three teams play the Cobar Roosters next Sunday at Larkin Oval, Cobar.

Collie and Callaghan take Monthly Medals

July 9, 2015 By Maggi Barnard

The sun did shine on the Forbes Golf Club, neatly highlighting the crisp frosts in the morning, the expansive cover of grass, and the scintillating performance of the golfers themselves. It was definitely a case of the “Double Cs” leading the way for the field. The field for the 18-hole Monthly Medal held on Saturday comprised 49 players who were keen to get around the course briskly.

To keep warm many players elected to take the walking option, thus also supporting the sponsors Walkers AgnVet. Although it must be said that the play by some of the golfers was quite agricultural at the times. The Winner of the A-Grade Monthly Medal was ‘Big Crane’ Betland with a 71 nett. He was well pleased to have beaten into second place his baby brother ‘King John’, who managed 73 nett, using his handicap to adjust his even-par-72 gross score. Steve’s two birdies on the 6th and 7th were the real clincher over John’s double-bogey on the 7th. But both played fine golf.

In B-Grade, Brian ‘Fred’ Collie, with a nett 69, felt comfortable all day and was well pleased, and quite modest, to win the Medal. Runner-up was Alby Callaghan, who was able to throw off some ill effects utilising some miracle medicine, and return home with a nett 71. Fred was quite thankful that he did not par the first, which folklore has as a sure disaster. His round went well with 11 pars marked on the card.

The C-Grade Monthly Medal went to a Gentleman’s Gentleman ahead of an Elder Statesman. Geoff Drane was in rare form to finish with a nett 72, and finished just ahead — although always behind throughout the day — of Tom Edols on nett 73. Tom played early in some of the crisp conditions, but Geoff had to contend with the nippy cold in the afternoon shade.

The winner for the A-Division Daily Comp, was ‘Fred’ Collie with a nett 69, conscious always of the ‘Big Crane’ Betland who was in hot pursuit, but finished second with a 71 nett. Fred was so pleased with his round that in the clubhouse he was willing to describe his round hole-by-hole to those resting there. Funny how the clubhouse emptied quickly!

In the B-Division, Alby Callaghan was triumphant with his nett 71. And to help in his celebrations, was another winner in the guise of Geoff Drane, one shot behind on a nett 72. They played in the same group, but have not yet divulged who won the drinks.

The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club, formed in 2003 as the Forbes Country Club Caravanners, is well known locally for having plenty of fun on its monthly rallies. So far this year its rallies have led members to Tumbarumba, Oberon, Manilla, Kiacatoo (west of Condobolin for the club’s annual bush rally), Young and Victoria’s Gippsland region for the club’s annual three-week roving rally. The next event is a rally to Bourke from July 20-27, with members spending two nights at the Nyngan Riverside Caravan Park and four at Kidman’s Camp in North Bourke. The Forbes and District Lions Club will officially welcome its new President, Peter Bright, at its annual changeover dinner tomorrow night when members will meet at the Golf Club Hotel. This is his second time as President, hopefully with a less eventful start to the term than last time, about five years ago, when Peter had been diagnosed with prostrate cancer and was inducted by phone from his hospital bed. Peter replaces outgoing President
and club stalwart Robyn Seberry. The club will hold its next car boot sale on Saturday, August 15, in Lions Park at the
end of Lachlan St from 7.30am to 1.30pm. For more information, contact the incoming President, Peter Bright, on 0419 463 803 (peterabright@bigpond.com) or email lionsclubs@hotmail.com.au.
