MOVIE REVIEW The Secret Life Of Pets

October 27, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

download-1

The Secret Life of Pets is from the creators of Despicable Me. It begins with a young terrier named Max who lives a great life riding through Central Park in the bicycle basket of his owner Katie. They have shared a great relationship
ever since Katie found Max when he was a puppy.

Max also has a close relationship with his friends: Chloe the cat, Gidget the pampered dog who is Max’s love interest, Mel a hyperactive dog, Sweetpea a little Budgie, and Buddy a laid-back Dachshund. One day Max’s owner Katie brought home a big brown furry dog named Duke who tries to steal away all the attention from his owner Katie. Max becomes so jealous he tries to frame Duke by causing destruction to his owner’s apartment. Duke and Max
decide to go on an adventure through the streets and find themselves caught up with a crazy bunny named Snowball and get themselves into a bit of trouble. They need to work together with Max’s other apartment friends to get out of trouble.

This was a good movie. It made me laugh a lot. I wish to see it again. This would be a good movie for kids of all ages.

Tell The Mozzies To Buzz Off!

With so many mosquitoes around following our recent floods, we thought it would be a good idea to give you some mosquito related information. Mosquitoes can carry diseases that may be passed on to people through mosquito
bites including Murray Valley encephalitis virus and Ross River virus.

Periods of heavy rainfall or floods can lead to ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes and we are definitely seeing evidence of this in Forbes at the moment. There are many simple things you can do to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes, including:
• Wear long, loose-fitting clothes if mosquitoes are around.
• Cover up as much as possible.
• Use an effective mosquito repellent on all exposed skin.
• Prevent mosquito breeding around your own home.
• Prevent mosquitoes from getting inside by using fly screens on windows and doors.
• Use mosquito coils or insecticide candles in small, outdoor areas.

There are many effective mosquito repellents available to suit the whole family including the all natural Mozzigear mosquito bands (for kids and adults), patches (to put on clothing) and wipes. For younger children or those with sensitive skin, we have our own Life mosquito repellent or alternatively you could try Moogoo Tailswat, a natural scented body spray that seems to be unpalatable for mossies. It can be sprayed as liberally as needed, including
over the face. It is also great for small children that are sleeping in an area where they may be bitten.

We also have a range of DEET repellents for those who like a heavy duty option. Call in to Flannery’s Pharmacy to ask for advice on prevention or treatment of mosquito bites.

Time To Vote Again In Orange By-Election

October 27, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

img_8027

All registered voters in the Orange State District, which includes Forbes, will have to go to the polls for the third time this year in the NSW State by-election on Saturday, 12th November to vote for a member of the Legislative Assembly.
The seat of Orange became vacant when National MP Andrew Gee won the federal seat of Calare in the July election.
A field of seven candidates are contesting the elections with Forbes resident Dianne Decker the only candidate from outside Orange. The other candidates are Scott Barrett for the Nationals, Philip Donate for the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party, Janelle Bicknell for the Greens, Scott Munro an Independent, Bernard Fitzsimon for Labor and Kevin Duffy Independent. Dianne is standing for the Christian Democratic Party.

Dianne, who served as a Forbes Councillor for 16 years, said the biggest issues she would be focusing on were council amalgamations, flood proofing the Newell Highway to Parkes and West Wyalong and health. She said the Shire Council was the first place people would go to when they had a problem. “This is where locals feel they can be heard. If councils are amalgamated this would no longer happen.”

For Dianne, who lives on the Newell Highway and experiences the silence and desertion on a daily basis since the floodwaters, the need to flood proof this important link has never been bigger. Another service she has experienced
personally is health when she needed life saving medical care 18 months ago. “The Orange Hospital is vital for medical services in our region and must be given sufficient staff.”

A Pain In The Heel

October 27, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

“Each morning I have to hobble to the toilet because I get a sharp pain in my heel when I walk. It settles after a while and feels like I am walking on a bruise.” Is this you? Plantar Fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. According to research, 80% of all cases of Plantar Fasciitis show spontaneous improvement within 12 months. This means that if you are prepared to suffer the pain for the next year, you have an 80% chance of improvement. If you want to be a little more proactive there are a few things you can do.

The plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band of tissue that fans from the heel to the base of each toe. It helps to support the arch of the foot. Plantar Fasciitis strikes when degenerative changes occur in the fascia where it attaches to the heel. It is sometimes associated with bony heel spurs however the spurs themselves do not cause pain.

The cause of Plantar Fasciitis is often multifactorial and may include any combination of; stiff ankle joints, low arches, high arches, weak foot muscles, poor footwear or increased load due to weight gain or prolonged periods of standing. Self-treatment for this problem should involve massage to the foot arch and gentle calf stretches before rising each morning, strengthening exercises for the intrinsic muscles in the foot, a temporary decrease in training and a gradual return to sport when it is no longer painful to walk. In addition any biomechanical issues present in
the lower limbs should be addressed to prevent recurrence.

Mayoral Notes…

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

council

The Local Government NSW Annual Conference was held earlier this week and I am pleased to report that four motions submitted by Forbes Shire Council were successful.
The motions are:
• That Local Government NSW requests the Minister and Premier to consider the decentralisation of the RFS to the rural/regional area.
• That Local Government NSW requests the NSW Government provide local government with access to the LiveTraffic.com website portal or an alternative local roads website or portal that councils can access to upload information regarding local road closures, for example due to flooding or accidents.
• That Local Government NSW lobbies for increased funding to rural and regional areas for more reliable mobile and internet services.
• That Local Government NSW makes representation to the Minister to ensure that local government is represented and consulted on the new water sharing plans.

Last Friday, NSW Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair was in Forbes and met with General Manager Danny Green, Deputy Mayor Grant Clifton and some of the local farmers who have been affected by the recent floods. He was able to gain an insight into just how hard the flood has been for our farmers.

On an exciting note, I am pleased to announce that the world premiere of the feature film, The Legend of Ben Hall, will be held at the Forbes Showground on Saturday, 12th November at 8pm. To purchase tickets visit

Dragons Up And Paddling

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Lachlan Dragons President, Robyn Stephens, recently attended the Dragon Boating Federation’s AGM in Sydney with Neil Stephens where a number of constitutional items needed to be ratified. Robyn is working well to keep the Dragons united in team spirit after so many missed sessions due to floodwaters. Debra Tooley and Deb Churchill have taken on the demanding role of regatta coordinators.

Bev Pengilly recently travelled to Orange to complete a full day Official’s Course, enabling her to officiate at regattas.
Our club is sadly missing Michael Ryan, but our drummer, Carmen Stephens, has been doing a fabulous job keeping us on track with her interim coaching. Both Carmen and Warren Edwards will attend a twoday coaching course in Orange. Sweep, Bill Thomas, takes the new dragon boat on its maiden voyage of Lake Forbes.

Two of our finest dedicated paddlers are soon off to Windsor to take up the challenge of the 65 km Wiseman’s Dash. Claire Davis and Helen Rowbotham are taking part in this inaugural classic, which is aiming to raise $400,000 for charity. If you’d like to support them with their fundraising go to https://give.everydayhero.com/au/kombodragon-
boat-team . All money must be in by this weekend.

One of our new boats has finally hit the water now that the floods have receded. If you’d like to be part of this great sport, you are most welcome to come and have a go. Find us on Facebook, or just come and meet us on Lake Forbes behind the Sport & Recreation Club at 8:15am Sundays or 5:45pm Thursdays.

Dream Come True For Wiradjuri Centre

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

dreaming-centre

The Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre will triple in size after $270,000 in funding was announced last Friday. It will see the installation of nine new sculptures, an amphitheatre, interpretive panels, additional Wiradjuri artworks and
the planting of 200 native shrubs and trees on the Lake Forbes foreshore. It also includes the erection of a building to display Wiradjuri artefacts and host workshops and cultural activities.

Deputy Mayor Grant Clifton said the expansion would be a significant boost to tourism and culture in the Forbes Shire. “From an economic and tourism point of view this will really put Forbes in the spotlight.” The Forbes Art Society, in conjunction with Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre Incorporated, led the project application with assistance from Forbes Shire Council’s Grants Officer Andrew Rawsthorne.

Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts, Troy Grant, who made the announcement, praised the Forbes Art Society for the quality of their proposal. “The funding is highly sought after but this project stacked up on a number of fronts,” he said. President of the Forbes Art Society, Dr Keith Mullette, said work on the project would start early next year and would be completed within two years. He said the Art Society had worked hand in hand with the local Aboriginal community to create the idea.

The funds will be provided under the NSW Government’s ClubGRANTS category 3 scheme for arts and culture.

BIZ VIZ At Forbes Pre-School

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

dsc_0403

Forbes Business Chamber members were given a guided tour of the new Forbes Pre-School last week. Director of the Pre-school, Amy Shine, said it all started as a request for new bins from then Mayor Phyllis Miller and it ended up with what is now a state of the art facility. Amy worked with various departments to secure grants for the new building to be constructed. The site chosen was once the tennis courts and some of the memorabilia and boards of the Forbes Tennis Club are seen inside the building. The capacity of the school has increased from 39 children per
day to accommodating 180 families.

The facility consist of large storage areas, a laundry, bathrooms, staff room and even doors on the small toilets to give the children privacy. “We wanted the pre-school to feel homely, welcoming and friendly,” said Amy. “Children
from all walks of life are welcome. We believe we can teach the children through sand, dirt, and paint, while iPads are only used for programming and observation for the teachers.”

Each room has between 20-25 children with three staff members. The school employs five full-time staff and 13 part-time staff members. The facility is open for use by other groups. These include an occupational therapist, a
speech therapist and motherhood groups. We try to be inclusive of everyone and are very mindful of meeting the needs of the community” said Amy.

Golf Course Open Again

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Last Saturday’s Individual Stableford attracted a field of 45 players who welcomed the opportunity to play on the surprisingly good greens and fairways after the floods. The winner was Andrew McDonald who produced a near flawless display to produce 42 points for the day. Runner-up was Matt Lawryk from Parkes with 39.

The ball sweep went to 34 points on count back, being distributed to those above plus: 38 – P Maher; 37 – P Duke, I Bown, R Morris; 36 – G Drane, A Grierson, C Barrett; 34 – S Sallaway, N Duncan. The NTP’s went to: 18th first – B Shine, 18th second – R Nixon. There were no 2’s scored.

There was one bona fide eagle scored on the 11th by Phil Maher. Phil’s drive drifted into the trees on the right, finishing near a trunk. Using his 2-iron, Phil punched a shot, which scorched out of the foliage, ran along the fairway, rose up the green, and dropped into the hole.

Once again the regular Sunday Stableford Medley crowd were out. The blustery conditions made it difficult to score well, but some players managed the wind well. The winner was Judy Hodge, with 36 points. The NTP’s went to: 18th first – J Hodge, 18th second – nobody. The FGA AGM will be held on Wednesday, 26th October at 6:30 pm. The first ‘Forbz Skinz’ competition starts on 28th October.

The Forbes Golf Classic is set for the weekend of 12th and 13th November.
