I’m so excited to report good news has come after the Country Mayor’s Rural Health Forum in Sydney which I attended last month. The NSW Government has finally announced a much needed multi-billion dollar investment to hire 10,000 doctors, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and non-clinical staff over the next four years.
It was very refreshing to hear both the Minister for Regional Health and Shadow Minister for Health and Mental Health confirm what we have always known – that it is of the utmost importance that debate around Regional and Rural Health should be approached on a bipartisan basis and must be brought before parliament as early as possible.
I, along with my colleagues in the Country Mayors Association of NSW, will be doing everything we can to ensure that all 44 recommendations of the inquiry are adopted by parliament. This is our opportunity to redress the deficiencies in regional and rural health delivery. I will not let our community down.
I’d like to welcome everyone to Forbes next week for the Forbes Eisteddfod in our beautiful refurbished Town Hall. Don’t leave it too long to purchase your tickets for Frost & Fire next weekend – use your Discover NSW Vouchers before they expire at the end of the month!
Forbes Shire Council wishes you a safe and enjoyable long weekend and encourages you to all be mindful of double demerits and also keep your pets safe as we have been notified of plans for private firework displays on both Friday and Saturday night.

Author Justin Smith will be at the Forbes Library on 21st June at 1pm to talk about his book Cooper Not Out.
Forbes bookworms have something to look forward to when author Justin Smith will be in town to talk about his book Cooper Not Out on 21st June at 1pm.
The book is a heart-warming tale about an unlikely hero and is part of the One Library One Book innovative community reading program that encourages everyone in the region to read and discuss the same book at the same time. Books have been distributed across the Central West Libraries network including Forbes.
Pick up a copy at Forbes Library, read it and join in the conversation. There’s no better time to curl up and read a good book now that winter is upon us.
Cooper Not Out is a funny, heart-warming novel set against a backdrop of real events in the summer of 1984 when the West Indian cricket team was touring Australia. It is moving and highly original tale about friendship and belief, and the joy of being true to yourself and discovering your greatest potential.
“I’m thrilled Cooper Not Out has been chosen for the One Library, One Book initiative,” Justin said.
Please call Forbes Library on 6852 1463 or book online via Eventbrite.com.au.

TEAM FOR TITLES… Forbes Netball Association will be represented at the Netball NSW Hart Senior State Titles this weekend by the 17U team. They are at the back (L-R) Jane Davis, Sienna Merchant, Laura Scott, Pip Hanrahan, Han-nah Stanmore and Lily Boyd. In front are Hannah Williams, Kaylar Emery and Kiesha Rusten. (Absent: Eb Colvin)
The Forbes Netball Association will be represented at the Netball NSW Hart Senior State Titles over the June long weekend.
The 17U team will compete in Camden in Division 3 after being elevated from Division 4 last year in the same age group.
The players are Lily Boyd, Piper Hanrahan, Kaylar Emery, Laura Scott, Hannah Stanmore, Eb Colvin, Jane Davis, Hannah Williams, Sienna Marchant and Kiesha Rusten. Coach: Robyn Kenny, Manager: Lynda Scott, Primary Carer: Jacqui Stanmore, and Umpire: Libby Dallimore.
The team will play seven games on Saturday, and six games each on Sunday and Monday.
The Forbes girls have been training consistently since January and competed in the regional league competition with some of the Forbes senior players.
This team was runner-up in the Division 2 regional league, and was a great starting block for the team’s improvement.
They have also competed in regional carnivals in Young, Forbes, Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo to give the team match practise together in the same conditions as they will experience at the state titles.
A great deal of preparation has gone into the team to enable them to play to their best ability over the long weekend.
Thank you to all the parents who have helped in any way, and to manager Lynda Scott for all her organisation.
Thank you also to our two umpires, Libby Dallimore and Karen Hargraves, who have followed the team around the region.
The girls have a wonderful team culture of supporting each other both on and off the court, enjoying each other’s company, and playing great netball together.
Opposition umpires often comment about the great team attitude of the girls.
They are a pleasure to coach and be a part of, and all of the FNA committee and members wish them good luck this weekend.

Winter has arrived and delivered the Orange/Forbes under 12s and 14s strong wins over Bathurst Bushrangers on Sunday.
The first Sunday of winter produced an opening quarter full of tough, miserable footy in Bathurst as the players struggled to come to terms with the extreme conditions.
It took a moment of class from Orange/ Forbes 12s to get the ball rolling early in the first quarter. The Swamp Tigers sneaked a goal to put Orange/Forbes on the board and scored again quickly after. Bathurst replied with one behind to bring the score to 12.1 at quarter time.
Bathurst got their first goal in the second quarter inside the first minute and their second minutes later, but Orange/Forbes put paid to any comeback kicking three goals to have a comfortable lead at half time. The final two quarters were controlled by the Swamp Tigers kicking three goals to none to take the game 8.12 (60) to 2.2 (14).
Best on ground for Orange/Forbes were Jack Sara and Romulus Milsom. Making his AFL debut was Forbes’ Will Northey who played very well.
The under 14’s match was all Orange/ Forbes in the wet and cold, not a vastly different looking side to the one that touched up Dubbo in Orange last Sunday. Cayden Metzeling continued a massive couple of weeks as the boy from Forbes followed up an eight-goal performance against Dubbo to bag another bunch of goals against the Bushrangers. The Orange/Forbes defence was troubled at times during the match but were always in control holding the Bushrangers to just nine points, with Zain Clark again leading the way. The under 14’s won the match 11.15 (81) to 1.3 (9).
In the other junior games Orange youth girls won 4.8 (32 to 4.3 (27), while the Orange under 17s triumphed 5.11 (41) to 1.5 (11).

Four netball teams from Forbes took part in the Dubbo regional carnival last weekend with some good results despite reduced player numbers due to illness.
The 17s played all their games with just seven players in the last of their preparation before the Hart Senior State Titles over June long weekend.
Goal shooter Laura Scott and goal attack Pip Hanrahan were extremely accurate with their goal shooting, with Laura scoring 100% accuracy in the first three games.
Thanks to Brianna, who stepped in when centre Hannah Stanmore was injured, and to Georgia Cole for being available to play when we were short in numbers.
Players player was shared between Pip Hanrahan and Eb Colvin.
The 14s team posted some solid wins, but the elusive win against Cowra was not to be. Players player was Jessie Tyack.
The 12s gave it their all in their final carnival for the season playing seven games with no reserves.
The 11s showed outstanding sporting spirit with only six players. Well done to Addi Howe who has just started playing NetSetGo, and travelled to Dubbo to compete in the 11s team.
We all need a tradie in our lives at some stage, and the time has come to acknowledge the work they do and how important they are in our daily lives. The Forbes Phoenix and Gunn’s Menswear are collaborating to shine the light on the tradies in Forbes.
The Forbes Phoenix is starting an exciting competition sponsored by Gunn’s Menswear in Forbes. Our readers are invited to nominate a tradie, male or female, to go into the draw for the Tradie of the Month. The winner each month will win a prize from Gunn’s Menswear.

In reaction to Linda Clark’s letter last week about the word ‘Eternity’ appearing at random places around Forbes lately, Leo Butler sent us this image taken in August last year about 200m north of the Camp Street bridge towards the Dreaming Centre. “I can remember in the 1950s and 1960s the word ‘Eternity’ chalked on a rock near Maimuru between Grenfell and Young, maybe the work of Arthur Stace,” Leo said.
New Number For Women’s Health: The Western NSW Local Health District Women’s Health Service has a new 1800 number. You can reach the service by calling 1800 008 422 between Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm to get in contact with your local women’s health nurse, and to book appointments directly. A referral is not required.
Real-Time Weather Forecast For Farmers: Farmers and regional communities in the Central West can now access detailed, real-time weather observations received by the new Doppler radar at Yeoval. The radar’s information will revolutionise how weather-dependent decisions are made, and will enhance the productivity of rural communities. The new radar enables the Bureau of Meteorology to provide accurate, real-time data, determining rain and wind velocity, raindrop and hail size, and the height of bushfire plumes up to 200km from the radar site. The addition of Yeoval to the radars at Brewarrina and Hillston-Ivanhoe means an area covering approximately 30% of NSW now has access to real-time weather warnings and forecasts. Data from the Yeoval Doppler radar is available on the Bureau of Meteorology weather app or at www.bom.gov.au.
New Wyangala Water Treatment Plant: Work to deliver up to 800,000 litres of clean drinking water every day has started at the new $5.1 million Wyangala Water Treatment Plant. The plant will be owned and operated by Cowra Shire Council when work is finished in early 2023. The project’s principal contractor, Enviropacific Services, aim to employ one-third of its workforce locally.
Testing And Research City at Cudal: The NSW Government has unveiled its vision for regional NSW to become the Southern Hemisphere hub of cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology, with a testing and research ‘city’ to be built at Cudal, near Orange. The government announced a $9.5 million upgrade to the Future Mobility Testing and Research Centre – once the local airstrip – which opened in 2019. The goal is to develop Australia’s first certification site for driverless vehicles.
More Return And Earn Points: More return points are being added to the NSW Government’s popular Return and Earn scheme after a new contract was signed with network operator TOMRA Cleanaway. The container deposit scheme has seen more than 7.4 billion containers returned since it began in 2017, and more than $30 million raised for charities and community groups. This resulted in a 52% reduction in the volume of drink container litter and recycling more than 672,000 tonnes in materials.
