Effects Of The Sun

Did you know that 90 percent of ageing and wrinkles are caused by sun damage? Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of ageing.

Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibres in the skin called elastin. When these fibres break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching.

Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world. More than 11,500 Australian men and women are diagnosed with a melanoma each year, and an estimated 434,000 people are treated for one or more non-melanomaskin cancers. Skin cancer accounts for over 80 percent of all new cases of cancer diagnosed in Australia each year.

Businesses Take The Opportunity To Reduce Driver Fatigue

Fifteen businesses have put their hand up to help reduce driver fatigue related road incidents, by signing up to take part in next year’s ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme.

The businesses join over 100 businesses across Hunter, Southern, South West and Western NSW to participate in the next round of the successful ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme, which provides drivers who have travelled more than 100 kilometres from their home with a free cup of tea or coffee from those participating businesses.

The scheme will see over 23 local council areas working together in a bid to reduce tired drivers and fatigue related crashes on roads in NSW.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said that the second biggest killer on NSW roads was drivers who were tired.

The scheme allows drivers to access a ‘free cuppa’ from participating businesses who have a variety of trading hours, which improves the scheme’s accessibility.

The scheme runs each year from 1st March to 31st May. The councils market and administer the scheme, with the ‘free cuppa’ itself being directly provided by participating businesses.

“If it wasn’t for the participating businesses supplying the ‘free cuppa’, then this scheme wouldn’t be possible and I would like to thank the 15 enthusiastic businesses across the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils who are taking part in next year’s scheme.

Many of whom are returning for the eighth or ninth time and we warmly welcome those who are joining us for the first time in 2019,” said Melanie. The local participating businesses for 2019 are:

Stress Fractures

The stress fracture is a common overuse injury seen in athletes who participate in endurance and high load bearing activities. Stress fractures in the lower limb account for between 80to 90% of all stress fractures and in runners contributes to almost 16% of all injuries.

During periods of relative inactivity or with osteoporosis or eating disorders, the density of bone decreases. If loads on the bone become repetitive or abnormally high and the bone is not given enough rest to allow for adaptation, the rate of stress-induced microfractures in the bone exceeds the rate at which the bone can repair and stress fractures develop.

The typical complaint with stress fractures is of a gradual onset of pain. Initially there is just pain with activity that subsides with rest but returns when the aggravating activity is resumed. Local tenderness and swelling are often found at the fracture site and pain is easily localised as opposed to shin splints which produce a more diffused pain.

Treatment initially involves rest from the aggravating activity for approximately four to six weeks. It may also require bracing or the use of a cam boot. In some cases, surgery may even be required.

Return to sport should be gradual to allow time for adaptation within the bone and it is important that all biomechanical and nutritional causes be addressed to prevent recurrence. Cross training and participating in a variety of different sporting activities can help minimise the risk of stress fractures.

It is important to remember that if you recognise the symptoms early and treat them appropriately, you can return to sports at your normal playing level.

Forbes Lions Car Boot Sale: The next Forbes and District Lions Club Car Boot Sale will be held on Saturday, 17th November. This will be held in the Lions Park beside Lake Forbes from 8am until 1pm. It will be the final sale for 2018 and proceeds from site fees will be donated to the Forbes Archery Club to help them get back on their feet. Members of the community are welcome to set up stalls to sell their wares. We cater for stalls of second hand goods as well as craft and produce stalls. Sites may be booked by phoning Peter on 0468 819 659 or Robyn on 6851 2209 or just set up and pay on the day. The cost is $10 per site. The Lions will be cooking up a storm on their BBQ with sausage sandwiches, bacon and egg sandwiches and the famous Lions sandwich for sale. The Lions will also be selling tickets in a Hyundai car raffle for $1. If you have some items which need clearing out before Christmas or some Christmas goodies to sell come along on the day.

Huge Numbers For First Forbes CDS Golf Day: The inaugural Forbes Currajong Disability Services Charity Golf Day was held last Sunday at the Forbes Golf Club. The event, which was a fundraiser for Currajong Disability Services (CDS), was a three-person Ambrose team competition and attracted entries from Parkes, Forbes and Condobolin. In total there were 66 players. “We were absolutely floored with the interest and turn out for the event,” said CDS Communications and Marketing Manager, Dane Millerd. “We held a BBQ, lucky door raffles and trivia on the day as well. There was also a silent auction for some blue chip items,” said Dane. “In total there were 21 sponsors and 13 major prize events with final fundraising numbers still being counted. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our supporters. We couldn’t have a day like this without them!” said Dane. “The difference all our sponsors, staff, volunteers and contributors have made is immeasurable and it cannot be stated enough how much we appreciate all that has been done,” he added.

Scarecrow and Veggie Garden Competitions: Don’t forget the Scarecrow and Veggie Garden Competitions is on this Saturday from 9am at the Forbes Riverside Community Gardens.

Good Scoring In Monthly Medal

Last weekend was the November Monthly Medal, sponsored by Jelbarts Tyrepower, contested by a field of 46 players.

The A-Grade players were really good, with Todd Callaghan declared the winner after his round of 66 nett. Runner-up was Digit McAuliffe with an impressive 69.

The B-Grade contest was close, with Doug Churchill producing a 69 nett to finish ahead of Paul Kay on 70 nett. The C-Graders also did well, where Frank Donohoe led the way with a 70 nett, ahead of Richard Smith on 72 nett.

The ball sweep went to 73 nett, going to: 66 – T Callaghan; 69 – D McAuliffe, D Churchill; 70 – P Kay, F Donohoe; 71 – N McMillan, A McDonald; 72 – W Judge, S Kirkman, R Smith; 73 – P Nixon, B Slack-Smith. The NTP’s went to: 9th – T Callaghan; 18th – S Sallaway.

On Sunday there was a charity day to aid the Currajong Disability Services. This had players from Parkes, Condobolin and Forbes, with many Forbes businesses donating prizes.

The field comprised 56 players making teams for the 3-person Ambrose. The nongolfer teams played 9-holes while the golfer teams played 18-holes.

Prizes were awarded for scratch and handicap scores for the 9-hole and 18-hole players, as well as for NTP’s. The major winners were:

• 9-Hole Scratch winner – M, J and S McGlashen 36 on c/b

• 9-Hole Nett winner – N Hamilton, N Hamilton, M Ruskiss 31.5 nett

• 18-hole Scratch winner – J Kemp, F Latu, M Wood with 65 on count back

• 18-hole Nett winner – J Cutler, G Hooper, T Callaghan 57 nett

Another Delightful Teddy Bear’s Picnic

What could be better than having a picnic in the park… having a teddy bear picnic in the park of course! Hundreds of children made their way to Nelson Park last Thursday to enjoy a picnic with their favourite cute and fluffy teddy bears.

The third annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic offered a rather windy, hot summer day and lots to do for children, family members and of course the special teddy bear guests.

Nelson Park was turned into a funland with games, crafts and entertainment for all to enjoy. Free entry and a scrumptious sausage sizzle provided by the Lions Club was also offered.

There was a very popular teddy bear bag toss and a bubble station for a burst of fun. Some kids spent most of their time bouncing in and out of a brand new jumping castle, while others took advantage of a face painting make-over provided by Council and Bunnings. It was evident from all the little butterflies, flowers, tigers and Spidermen scurrying about that the face-painting was a popular choice for children.

The Rural Fire Service surprised unexpected picnic-goers with a splash of refreshing water. As if all of this wasn’t exciting enough the toy library, bandage a teddy bear, obstacle course and kids play gym also supplied hours of entertainment.

There were also hundreds of free teddies given to children who attended the picnic festivities.

The community groups that supported this event helped create a lovely atmosphere.

Quality Stalls And Entertainment At Forbes Market Day

The countdown to the Forbes Market Day hosted by the Forbes Public School P&C is almost finally over. The gates will officially open to the community on Saturday, 17th November at 9am. Showcasing more than 60 high quality market stalls from across the Central West region, the event will also include a jam-packed agenda full of entertainment and fun.

The focus of the day is on family participation and ample amounts of fun and the committee is confident they have met the brief.

“We wanted to provide an atmosphere where families could come and enjoy a fun morning together. Music from local talent will also look to draw a crowd and add to the festivities on the school’s luscious green oval,” said spokesperson Linda Van Coller.

“This is our fourth year running the market and this year’s market is massive. We have also added an even bigger Game Zone for the kids to enjoy,” said Linda.

Game Zone tickets will be available for $1 each. This includes a jumping castle, coin toss and many more.

The committee is very appreciative of the community support that they have received.

“The school’s families and local businesses have been overwhelming in their support this year and we would like to thank everyone who has donated their time or goods and services to support our wonderful school,” said School Principal, Dafydd Thomas.

There will be a raffle drawn on the day with a very impressive first prize being a YCF 50A Two Wheeler 50cc; second prize a BBQ basket and third prize a family hamper.

Tickets will be available for purchase on the day and are $2 each or three for $5. Kristen’s Dance Studio and Kumiai Ryu Forbes are amongst the performances featured on the day. As well as Australian National Busking Championship runners-up Hannah Dunn and Anabelle van Wyk.
