The Forbes Netball Committee (FNA) is excited to be able to bring netball back to the community in July. Registrations are open now for all players to join, and using the Government’s Active Kids Voucher is a great way to start for all school children.

The Saturday junior mixed competition, including NetSetGo will open on 18 July, with a ‘Welcome back to Forbes’ Netball day which will include a sausage sizzle and chance to register.

Players can choose a friend to play with in their team. NetSetGo will be played from 10am-11am, and the competition will be played from 11.15am-12.15pm.

The Saturday Junior Mixed competition will be for players from NetSetGo to under 15s and competition will finish on 26 September.

Friday Netball will start on 31 July and is free to all players, boys and girls. You do not have to be registered to join in the fun. Friday netball is organised by accredited coaches and is played from 5pm to 6.30pm each Friday.

FNP has planned for the Spring Night Competitions for both mixed and ladies teams, to start on 26 August with the first grading games. The second grading games will be played on 2 September, with the first competition games to be played on 9 September.

Team nomination forms can be printed from the FNA website and emailed to Monica via email secretary.forbesnetball@gmail.com. The team nominations will close on 19 August.

Any player wanting to be in a team, or a team looking for players should contact the committee on the above email.

Aussie Croquet 27 June

A frost and a cool breeze were not enough to dampen the spirits of the 29 players who graced the courts for Saturday’s Aussie Croquet. Tuesday’s Golf Croquet was cancelled due to wet weather. Apart from morning tea being cancelled, nothing has changed. Six players each won their three games on Saturday. They were: John Browne, John Cole, Merv Langfield, Kevin Rubie, Bill Scott and Geoff Coles.

Fair Wear And Tear

We have had many tenants moving in and out of properties recently, and I thought it a good time to clarify what the term “fair wear and tear” means.

When it comes to Residential Tenancy Agreements, fair wear and tear means the normal deterioration of a property over time from ordinary, everyday use.

Some examples of fair wear and tear consist of faded curtains, frayed cords, furniture indentations and traffic marks on flooring, scuffed wooden flooring, faded or chipped paint or movement cracks.

Some examples of what is not fair wear and tear are missing or torn curtains, large marks or holes in walls, significant damage to flooring such as stains or burn marks, badly scratched or gouged wooden floors, unapproved paint jobs, burns or cuts in benchtops, and damage caused by pets.

The tenant is responsible to rectify any negligent, irresponsible or intentional actions that cause damage to the property. These are things we look for during our regular routine inspections rather than just waiting until the end of the tenancy.

Should we discover that there are some items that need to be rectified, we will ad- dress this as soon as possible to achieve a suitable solution.

Alternatively, if it is the end of the tenancy and damage is noted on the outgoing inspection, we will claim the tenant’s bond to reimburse or compensate the landlord for this.

What is your favourite subject at school and why? My favourite subject is art be- cause it is creative, and I enjoy using lots of colours.

What makes you laugh the most? My friends.

What is your dream job? To be a gymnastics coach.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? It would be teleportation so I can go to places whenever I want.

What is something you are really good at? I am really good at gymnastics, athletics, swimming and netball.

What is your pet hate? When people dribble from their mouth.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why? I would live in America because that’s where most famous people are.

Dawson And West Are 4BBB Champs

On Saturday, the men played their 4BBB Championship, with both Stroke and Nett contested and 43 pairs competing.

The 4BBB Stroke Championship was won by Peter ‘Ecky’ Dawson and Tim West. Their 34-33-67 was way ahead of the runners-up, and featured Champion-form play by Tim. Runners up were Dan Bayley and Mark ‘Stubbie’ Collits with 37-34-71. It was a tale of 9-holes each.

The Nett Championship had very competitive scores. The Nett Champions were George Falvey and Damien Kennedy with a nett 59, where each player had near equal contribution. The Nett Runners-up were Greg Webb and Rod Besgrove with scores of 32-30-62. A fine effort by Greg on the 15th kept them in the running.

The ball sweep went to 67 nett on count back: 62 – C Dwyer/T Howe; 63 – C Hurford/A Currey; 64 – P Maher and M Cahill, R Grayson and T Wallace, I Bown and B Chandler, N Duncan and S Grallelis; 66 – L Whifield and C Moore, J Ridley and B Slack-Smith, R Williams and D Sharpe; 67 – D Churchill and P Barnes, B Parker and L Little.

The NTP’s went to K Herbert and G Falvey, with only four scored overall. Kim got his ‘2’ but George missed out.

Andy Borger played the 12th hole unconventionally to score his par. His approach shot flew the green onto the 13th fairway. His return chip came over the hill and almost plopped into the hole. He then putted from off the green straight into the hole.

There was no Sunday Stableford Medley, due to some cold and inclement weather keeping the golfers away.

Do not forget the farewell to Ben Gear scheduled for 4 July. To manage the social-distancing aspects please advise the Ladies’ or Men’s Captains if you would like to attend.

The Men’s Wallace Cup will commence soon, more players are needed to make it a worthwhile draw. Place your name on the list in the Pro Shop.

This weekend will see the Ladies play 27-holes Foursomes on Saturday, 27 July, and the Men play playing 36-holes over both Saturday and Sunday.

Tree Change Makes Population Boom Out West

Children frolic in the snow at last year’s Frost and Fire Festival in Forbes, it is easy to see why families are choosing country living over city life.

In 2009 Moana Duggan, owner of Lakeside Takeaway, moved from Sydney to Forbes with her family. “We had been there for long enough, it was a 45 minute drive to school each day, out here it’s a slower lifestyle and it has been really good for the kids,” she said.

Moana’s sentiments are shared by tens of thousands of Australians who moved to regional towns from cities, in fact, 65,000 more people chose to move to regional Australia from capital cities than the other way around, according to a new Regional Australia Institute (RAI) report tracking population movements between 2011 and 2016.

While it wouldn’t be far-fetched to asume it is retirees making up for the bulk of those who have made the switch from city to country, Minister for Population Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said, “It’s also great to see the trend of millennials moving to regional areas, given so often they can spark life and vitality in these communities by becoming long-term community members.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said The Big Movers: Understanding Population Mobility in Regional Australia report showed more and more Australians were attracted to the lifestyle benefits of regional towns.

“Regional Australia is a great place to live and work and the Liberal and Nationals Government will continue to invest in the success and liveability of our regions to ensure it stays that way,” Michael said.

Mayoral Notes

Well it has been a very busy week again, but also a very productive one.

Last week we had our June Council Meeting and we endorsed the Youth Strategic Plan. It will now go on Public Exhibition for the public to comment. It is so important we define areas to keep our youth engaged and part of our community.

We want to provide them with the services and opportunities they need to thrive in our town, as we know being a kid in country NSW has its challenges but we would like the youth to know we plan to tackle the big issues and provide them a safe and happy place to grow. Jump on our website and have a look at the plan and let Council know your thoughts.

Our crews have also been busy of late with the work surrounding the new Camp Street Bridge. Doesn’t it look amazing! The project is in the final weeks and we will keep you updated on the proposed opening celebrations.

Some of the surrounding landscaping will not be completed until Spring, when the season is better suited for planting.

When this work is complete it will be all hands-on deck for the refurbishment of Templar Street.

We have ordered the new self-watering planter boxes, and you may have noticed the smaller plants have been removed from the garden beds and re-located in other garden beds around town.

Delay The Spray-Clethodim Advice

Grain growers are reminded they should avoid spraying annual ryegrass with clethodim herbicide when frost is forecast.

Weed control experts are advising growers not to spray clethodim two to three days before or after a frost event due to the impact on efficiency. The poor performance of clethodim on annual ryegrass, a weed becoming increasingly resistant to clethodim, can be associated with cold and frosty conditions.

University of Adelaide Associate Professor in weed and crop ecology, Dr Gurjeet Gill, says frosty conditions make it even harder to control annual ryegrass when clethodim resistance is present in the population.

“Growers are advised to carefully review weather forecasts for their district and spray clethodim when cloud cover is present and the risk of frost occurrence is low,” Gurjeet says.

Clethodim resistance has been slowly increasing in the northern region with current testing indicating resistance through New South Wales is less than 10 per cent.

This message is particularly pertinent to Forbes, which is prone to frost at this time of year, when many canola and pulse crops are likely to be sprayed for ryegrass control.
