From The Editor

June 18, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

The past few weeks have reminded us that we aren’t out of the woods with COVID yet. A rash decision by an infectious Victorian couple during a lockdown (due to the pandemic) that resulted in them potentially infecting people across three states, must rank among the most selfish acts in recent memory. We all want to travel and see loved ones and COVID has emphasized more than ever the importance of family but to jeopardise the safety and well-being of the masses for a holiday is reckless.

This week it was brought to my attention that you now can’t see your own doctor at Forbes Hospital. Not sure how true this is but we welcome any stories or feedback regarding this. Already medical services in regional areas are stretched (try getting a doctor in Parkes) and what is worse is what appears to be bureaucracy gone mad with this latest development. It is hard enough getting a doctor and even harder to get one to address patient concerns without them being beholden to external or internal stakeholders driven by the dollar – all Forbes people want is decent doctors and decent care. Is that not too much to ask?

What is going on with the Forbes Magpies? Once the toast of the comp and the envy of all other teams, Forbes has always punched above its weight. This year the first-grade side have one win and one draw half way through the season. Fire up boys!

Bushranger Sequel Shelved Due To Lack Of Support

June 18, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

It was only a few short years ago that the critically acclaimed feature film The Legend of Ben Hall, played to a packed audience at Forbes Showground. For writer, director and producer Matthew Holmes, it was to be the first of a ‘Legends Trilogy’ on Australian bushrangers with movies on Frank Gardiner and John Vane to follow.

“The Legend of Ben Hall – which was released in 22 countries and in five languages – was always planned to be the first entry in the epic ‘Legends Trilogy’,” said Holmes in a media statement this week.

“Characters from the first film would reappear in both, such as Ben Hall, Biddy Hall and John Gilbert. Once complete, they would form a vast crime saga of New South Wales’ most notorious bush-rangers spanning over a decade,” Holmes said in the statement.

“It would be the first film series of its kind ever produced in this country; a ‘shared universe’ of iconic Australian characters.”

But after five years of endless pitching, Holmes has reluctantly had to call it quits and shelve the next two installments indefinitely.

“It’s especially heartbreaking for me because of the amount of passion that was behind this project. The amount of time poured into the screenplays was immense,” he said.

“The historical research alone and the careful weaving of the three films together was a monumental task.”

In early 2020, Holmes came extremely close to signing with a major American studio to both finance and distribute the Frank Gardiner film.

“We even had the contracts in our hands. But when COVID hit and the world fell apart, so did that deal.”

Blue Bullettes Defend NSW Country Title

June 18, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

BACK-TO-BACK: Central West Blue Bullettes Women’s Rugby side defend their Thompson Cup NSW Country Rugby Championships titles with an emphatic 35-15 win over Hunter in Tamworth.

They say it’s hard to climb the mountain once but it’s even harder doing it twice and that’s exactly what the Central West Blue Bullettes have done with a resounding 35-15 win over Hunter at Tamworth in the Thompson Cup last weekend. The win backs up the crown NSW Country Rugby Championship trophy the side took home in 2019.

Unlike 2019, the Bullettes did it the hard way. Difficult conditions married with a sea-son impacted by COVID meant that combinations were a little awry early.

But it didn’t take long for the title fancies to find their rhythm.

Forbes duo Amy Townsend and Paulini Lawanikula figured prominently for the Bullettes with the latter playing a hand in the semi-final win over fellow contenders Central Coast 27-5. The tournament continues what has been a strong season for Lawanikula who’s husband Rusi along with Miniti Tonga, Tom Macleay, Mahe Fangupo and Charlie French all lined up from the Forbes Platypi club for Blue Bulls who also had success at the carnival.

Despite the short campaign, the Bullettes stuck to the task and everyone clicked when it mattered.

Bathurst Bulldogs player and captain Mel Waterford was elated with how the unit came together with little notice and the spectre of COVID hanging over the tournament.

“All the players from 1 to 25 played their part and put together excellent performances,” she said.

“Hunter kept us on our toes and sharp all game,” Mel said.

After an excitable start at a frenetic pace, it was Central West who settled first against Hunter, playing the majority of the match in their half and not allowing them into the game. Dominant forward running and some sublime skills from the outside backs eventually proved too much for the Hunter side as Central West ran out 20 point winners in front of a decent Peel Valley crowd.

COVID Scare For Forbes

June 18, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

TESTING SITE: Forbes Showground has been a COVID testing site since Thursday June 10 after a COVID scare swept along the Newell Highway following the news an infectious couple left Victoria for Queensland early June and stopped in Forbes.

Late last week a COVID scare swept through Forbes and other centres along the Newell Highway and into Queensland following the news on Wednesday afternoon June 9, that two people potentially infected with COVID-19 had stopped in the town on June 1 and 2.

Other towns along the highway were also added to the list as it became apparent the Victorian couple who had travelled up to the Sunshine Coast, had stopped in more locations than had been previously believed.

Western NSW Local Health District soon had testing spots set up for people to be swabbed. Since this time last week, there have been no new locally-acquired cases of COVID-19 recorded in NSW since Forbes and other Newell Highway communities were put on alert over a week ago.

Well over 600 people have been tested for COVID-19 in Forbes with more than 3,000 people fronting for testing on Thursday across regional centres after the news had broken.

In other developments:
• NSW Health update released at 11am Monday, they announced they had recorded no new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 to 8pm Sunday June 13.
• On Saturday, samples taken from the sewerage system in Forbes at that time had not detected fragments of the virus that causes COVID-19.
• A pop-up testing centre opened on Thursday morning, and remains open at Forbes Showground at time of publication.
• A COVID-19 vaccination clinic was in town on Friday, and 230 people had their first vaccination dose.

Anyone who resides in or has visited Forbes, Coonabarabran, Dubbo or the other areas visited should monitor for the onset of even the mildest of cold-like symptoms. If symptoms appear, please seek COVID testing, and isolate until you receive a negative result.

Players Strike Form In Medals

June 11, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

SMACK: Scott Kirkman about to launch off the tee in the shadows of the morning chill.

Saturday’s comp was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by the BWR Accountants & Ad-visors, with 67 players doing their best to win. The leaders showed a welcome return to form to claim victory.

The A-Grade was won by Dan Bayley (67 nett), finishing well ahead of runner-up Ja-cob Bernardi (71 nett). Dan was under par on the back-9, while Jacob struggled after a good front-9.

The B-Grade was won by Paul Kay (68 nett) in a close finish ahead of Greg Webb (69 nett). Greg came off the back of a good win at Condobolin, but Paul showed his true determination and grit to win after recent weeks of indifferent form. The C-Grade was also close with Tom Toohey (69 nett) nudging Frank Hanns (70 nett) into runner-up. Tom’s front-9 set him up well.

The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back, so please check in the Pro Shop. The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Chandler, 18th – T Griffiths. The 3rd hole Super Pin went to Glendon Hooper, whose early shot in the day set the target but was never beaten.

There were no visitors, and only a handful of 2’s were scored with most on the 18th.

There was no Sunday Stableford Medley, with players resting after a marathon period of golf.

Numbers can still be entered for the Can-Assist Ambrose Medley. And players are reminded of the LVDGA Championship and Pennants being played at Parkes on 20 June. This comprises an Individual Stroke and Handicap Event with registered teams for the Pennants.

Also on the calendar are the Mens Foursome Championships, played over 36 holes and scheduled for 26 and 27 June. Choose your partner well.

Saturday 12 June is an 18-Hole Ambrose Medley with proceeds going to Can-Assist. Sunday and Monday have Stableford Medleys.

“Worth The Wait” ‘Road Kill’ Unveiled As Part Of Sculpture Down The Lachlan Trail

June 11, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

NEW ART” Road Kill by Victorian sculptor Jimmy Rix was unveiled last week by NSW Nationals Sam Farraway and Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM.

Victorian sculptor, Jimmy Rix breathed a sigh of relief when his commission piece for the Sculpture Down the Lachlan (SDL) trail was finally set in place at the Four Mile Reserve in Forbes. ‘Road Kill’ was officially unveiled last week following a nine month delay due to the COVID border restrictions between New South Wales and Victoria.

“I sent most of the sculpture on the semi-trailer and my plan was to head up to Forbes one week later,” Jimmy said.

“However, the NSW-Victorian border closed just a few days after, and I had to wait nine months before I could cross into New South Wales to install the work.”

Jimmy drew inspiration for ‘Road Kill’ following a trip to Forbes in 2019, at the tail end of a three year drought. The 3.5 tonne reinforced Corten steel plate sculpture, which took six months to construct, depicts a role reversal of a rebellious kangaroo taking its revenge on a busy stretch of road.

Chair of the Forbes Arts Society (FAS) Dr Karen Ritchie said ‘Road Kill’ has been “worth the wait”.

“The piece is in keeping with the SDL trail’s unofficial theme – challenging viewers to take a moment to think about our impact on the natural environment,” said Dr. Ritchie.

“What I love most about this piece is its appeal to everyone.”

The ‘Boosting the Lachlan Valley Econo-my Art Project’ has been proudly funded by the NSW Government’s Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund, the Forbes Arts Society, Forbes Shire Council, Lachlan Shire Council and Evolution Mining.

Free Child Restraint Checks

June 11, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Shire Council are ensuring that children are safe and secure when travelling in vehicles with free child restraint checks by Authorised Child Restraint Fitters in Forbes on Saturday 19 June.

Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, says that this free child restraint checking day is held annually, is well patronised and is important in ensuring the safe travel of young children.

“This year’s child restraint checking day will be held on Saturday 19 June from 10am – 1pm in the Bunnings carpark.

“The correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints is vital. Research shows that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this puts children at risk of injury in the event of a crash.

“Most of the restraints we have checked at previous events have had minor problems that needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child, such as tightening and untwisting straps, fitting gated buckles and correcting the seatbelt’s path through the restraint.

“It is important to have your child restraint checked regularly after prolonged use and installed correctly before use to ensure that your precious cargo is safe,” Ms Suitor said.

Free child restraint inspections will be provided by Authorised Child Restraint Fitters in Forbes on Saturday 19 June in the Bunnings carpark from 10am – 1pm. Bookings are essential, phone 6861 2364 to secure your place.

Information about the national child restraint laws, the types of restraints and advice on moving children from one restraint type to the next will be available.

For further information please contact Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils, Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor on 02 6861 2364.

Tallulah’s Return To The Stage

June 11, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Tommy Jeffs is back in glitter as he takes his cabaret show to Forbes in July, in aid of Ronald McDonald House.

When Tommy Jeffs OAM hung up his alter ego Tallulah’s sparkly gown in 2020, he was sure she had retired forever. Then Ronald McDonald House in Orange called on Tallulah to raise some funds for their vital service and Tommy could not say no.

So, the perpetually busy Canowindra legend will be taking his cabaret show to Forbes for Christmas in July in collaboration with Forbes Shire Council.

“I have had friends that have used Ronald McDonald House. They are getting more and more people over there and it is becoming harder to raise money to support the good work they are doing. It is much easier to raise a lot of money in one night, than to do a lot of little fundraisers.”

Tommy knows this well, after a career of fundraising over $1 million, which earned him an OAM last Australia Day.

Those who know Tommy, will not be surprised that Tallulah is back. As Canowindra’s mover and shaker, he is not one to remain idle. During lockdown last year, Talullah gained a cult following of half a million people around the world from posting short clips online.

When asked what people can expect of the show, Tommy said: “They will get value for money. A beautiful meal, a variety show and a good laugh — and that is all we need these days.”

It is hard to believe this will be Tallulah’s last performance, with the septuagenarian invigorated by another show.

“We have been rehearsing for the last month — which I really need! It is good exercise,” Tommy laughed. “It is my 70th this year. I want to prove age is not a barrier.”

The event will be held on 31st July at Forbes Town Hall with tickets available online at 123Tix for $110. Price includes canapes, dinner and dessert from Eat Your Greens and Tallulah’s cabaret show, as well as a $25 donation to Ronald McDonald House in Orange.

Boys To The Bush Secure NSW Government Grant

June 11, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

NSW Nationals Upper House MP, Sam Farraway MLC was in Forbes on Friday to present a NSW Government grant on behalf of Minister for Regional Youth, Bronnie Taylor MLC to Boys to the Bush to support their community outreach program.

“After visiting and speaking with Tim West, Program coordinator for Boys to the Bush in April I was able to see firsthand the outcomes this organisation was achieving for local youth in the Forbes and Central West region,” Mr Farraway said.

“After meeting with Minister Taylor, we both share the admiration for the work Tim and his team are achieving and I’m delighted to present Boys to the Bush with a grant of $10,000 to support their camps and out-reach programs,” Mr Farraway said.

The $10,000 grant will be used to purchase a new boat, portable fridges, boating & camping equipment to enhance their outreach program for vulnerable youth within the central west community.

With outcomes for youth high on the priority list for the NSW and Federal governments the funds will no doubt make a massive difference.
