Windy Day For Monthly Medal

The Saturday Men’s Competition was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions. The field of 65 players battled strong winds, which made for average scores.

The A-Grade winner was John Zannes, with a nett 71 after going out early. Runner-up was Alf Davies with 72 nett, getting there on count back from Wade Ritchie, a new member of the Club.

The B-Grade was won by Nick Greenhalgh with the equal best score of the day, 70 nett. Runner-up on count back was Phil Wells. The C-Grade was won by Peter Tisdell, also an early starter, with 72 nett and just ahead of Bruce Squires on 73 nett. Bruce snuck past Geoff Drane on count back.

The NTP’s went to 9th W Ritchie, 18th J Zannes, while the third Hole Super Pin went to Greg Webb, less than a metre from the hole. Visitors were Brad Hazell from Hervey Bay and Damien Noll from Condobolin.

An award is needed for Alex McKinnon who had the worst day of any golfer, ever. He struck trees, went out of bounds, had rebounds that went behind him or onto the wrong fairway, and even managed a few ‘shanks’, but he finished.

The Sunday Stableford Medley field was a small mix of local and Condobolin players. Brett Thomas took the day with 34 points. There was no ball sweep and unfortunately no NTP’s.

Head Pro Adam had his last Junior coaching clinic last week and was pleased with the attendance again. He intends to run a Golf Camp in January, and to continue the Junior Coaching through the first term. Contact the Pro Shop for details.

Saturday, 12 December is an Individual Stableford, sponsored by Knights Fabrications. Sunday, 13 December is a Stableford Medley.

Netball Finals Excitement

The Finals of the Forbes Netball Spring Night Competitions for both Mixed and Ladies’ teams were played last week. Great skills were on display as the players contested with their opposition and fought hard for each goal scored by their team. All players showed outstanding sportsmanship for their teams.

The Final of the 17 under division was won by Hot Shots who defeated Speculators 27-22.

Hot Shots started well, outscoring their opposition in the first quarter, but Specula- tors fought back, and at half time the score was 17-10 to Hot Shots.

Hot Shots circle defenders of Georgia Cole and Lily Boyd were leading their team, with strong rebounds and tight defence. The second half saw Speculators catching their opposition, winning the second half by two goals.

Strong attacking from Speculators shoot- ers Halli Woolnough and Amity Payne, helped to keep their team in the game. They were supported by defender Sadie McCahon who tried for every intercept. Hot Shots centre Kirby Maslin was a great link through the court, to help lead her team.

The Final of the Ladies Open division was won by Gundamain who defeated Chunky Pies 52-30. The game was closely contested, with Gundamain gradually pulling away in each quarter.

The second and fourth quarters for Gundamain sealed the match, with centre Nicole Mee and shooter Chloe Madden shining for their team.

Chunky Pies’ Ellie Flick and Phoebe Costello had outstanding games, with accurate shooting from Ellie, and strong attacking and defending from Phoebe.

Gundamain’s goal attack Shannon Hurley was extremely fast around the court, with strong drives, and accurate passing and Rebecca Roach also stood out for her team.

The Mixed Final was won by Gundamain who defeated Mix & Match 44-25.

Chloe Madden, Gundamain shooter was accurately supported by attacker Shannon Hurley. The experience of the older Gundamain team showed through during the game but Mix & Match did not give up.

Mix & Match was led by Jacob Collits and Fiona Howarth, who both had outstanding games. Gundamain won every quarter, with Annabelle Dyer making a difference for her team. Circle defender Gabe Boland for Mix & Match never stopped trying and took some great intercepts.

Funding For Forbes Dragon Boat Club

On Monday, 30 November, Member for Orange, Phil Donato MP visited Forbes to announce funding for the Forbes Dragon Boat Club under the Local Sporting Grant Program 2019/20.

The $5,000 of funding contributed towards the purchase of a champion 10-seater dragon boat, an asset that is already being put to good use in the Club.

“The Forbes Dragon Boat Club is a growing club of around 33 people that provides a wonderful social outlet, comradery, and physical fitness,” Phil said.

“It’s wonderful to see the local Dragon Boating community continue to thrive, and I was proud to support this funding application.”

Club member Deanna Williams said she was delighted the club received the funding and explained that the new 10-seater boat is a huge benefit in numerous ways.

“We previously had two 20-seater boats, we needed the 10-seater champion boat because we often don’t get the number of people required to put out a 20-seater,” Deanna explained.

“You need at least 10 people to paddle a 20-seater boat, but only five or six people to paddle a 10-seater. A lot of members travel from a fair distance, so if they turn up and we can’t put out a boat, it’s a bit of a disappointment.”

Deanna also explained that the new 10-seater boat also allows for more rigorous training, which suits some of the clubs more competitive members.

“Quite a few people come for a social paddle, while some members like to train more rigorously to get practice in for NSW representation at the Australian Championships,” she explained.

“The 10-seater is a smaller boat which means it’s more difficult, and you really need to get your technique right and your timing correct. It is great for rigorous training practice. The 20-seaters are heavier and more stable, so they are better for the social paddles.”

Hot Day For Deacon Dwyer Trophy

The Saturday Competition was the annual Deacon Dwyer Trophy event, a 4BBB Stableford Medley sponsored by Rod Besgrove. The field of 70 players competed in very hot and windy conditions, but all finished their rounds.

The pairing of George Falvey and Brianna Duncan, on 46 points, won on count back from Nicole Death and Jenny Fletcher with the Ladies handling the heat better than the men.

The NTP’s went to 9th, Ladies’ J Fletcher, Men T Morgan; 18th, Ladies’ Nil, Men B Parker, with the 3rd Hole Super Pin going to Mike Spice. The best Two of the day was an eagle scored on the 13th hole by Brianna Duncan, with a very fine chip in after a monster drive.

The weather conditions on Sunday meant there was no Stableford Medley field.

The Mid-Week Christmas Hamper scheduled for Thursday, 10 December will be a 12-hole event run in conjunction with the Vets Competition. There will be over all hamper prizes, but separate ball sweeps for the vets and non-vets players.

The Tuesday golfers are having their Christmas lunch on Tuesday, 8 December, after their usual morning play. Players can play and then eat, or join in the lunch only. Contact Geoff Drane for details.

The Forbes-Parkes Vets are having their final event and Christmas break-up on 17 December at Parkes. Gathering at 9.30am for a 10am start.

Head Pro Adam had his last Junior Coaching class for this year on Thursday and has been very happy with the response by the children. For next year he is trying to organise a Holiday Camp in January 2021, and will continue the Junior Coaching in Term One of 2021.

Saturday, 5 December is the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions Forbes. Sunday, 6 December is a Stableford Medley.

The finals of the Netball Spring Night Competitions for both Mixed and Ladies’ teams were played this week. The competition ladder was very close, with only a point or two separating many of the teams.

Last week, Speculators did not umpire for the first time, and must pay the $50 fine before they play this week and give their opposition a five-goal start.

The next night competitions will start in February 2021, and everyone should stay up to date with all the latest news on Forbes Netball Facebook and the local newspapers.

The Annual General Meeting of the Forbes Netball Association will be held on 18 February 2021.

There will be lots of help needed to bring netball to the Forbes community in 2021.

The Night Competitions will be organised for Autumn and Spring, and the new Saturday Junior Mixed Inter Town Competition will be played for all players, 17 and under, between the Forbes, Parkes, and Young netball associations.

NetSetGo for all players five years and up, will also be played in Forbes each Saturday during the winter months, in line with the Inter Town Junior competition.

Dawson Wins Medallist Trophy

Saturday’s Men’s Competition was a combination of an Individual Stroke event, sponsored by Loomzys Fish N Fix, and the final of the Medal of Medallists.

Among the field of 71 were 18 of the eligible 29 players vying for the Medal of Medallists Trophy. The field was bolstered by a group of visiting golfers from Crookwell Golf Club, and other individuals taking a break from visiting family.

While the Medallists’ scores were not breath-taking, three finished on nett 72, requiring a count back. Peter Dawson was declared the winner of the Medal of Medallists Trophy, over Clayton Alley and John Zannes.

Both Peter and Clayton were dual medallists through the year. Some form players who faltered through the day included Troy Howe, Brian Everest and Harry Callaghan.

In the Individual Stroke event the Division 1 winner was Michael Spice, who fired a very worthy score of 69 nett. Runner-up, on count back, was Kim Herbert with nett 71. The Division 2 was won by Blair Thomas, with 68 nett, ahead of Runner-up Bruce Chandler with nett 70.

The Sunday Stableford Medley field was small, with the participants going out early to beat the heat. The honours went to Frank Donohoe and Ben Webb from Dubbo.

The Annual Mixed Trophy night which gives recognition to the winners and runners-up in major events throughout the year will be held tomorrow, Saturday, 28 November upstairs in the Golfie.

A reminder for persons to attend the FGA AGM, set for Tuesday, 1 December, up-stairs in the Golfie Hotel.

There may be a change to the Mid-Week Christmas Hamper scheduled for Thursday, 10 December. Watch the Notice Boards for details.

Saturday, 28 November is the Deacon Dwyer 4BBB Medley, sponsored by Rod Besgrove. The Trophy night will follow the day’s play. Sunday, 29 November is a Stableford Medley.

Netball News

The Forbes Netball Spring night competitions for both Mixed and Ladies’ teams drew to a close this week, with the last round of games played on Wednesday, 25 November.

All team representatives were asked to check at the office on Wednesday night, to see if their team will be playing in the finals. The finals were played between the two top teams on the point score ladder.

Three finals will be played by the Mixed, Ladies’ Opens, and Ladies’ Under 17 divisions on Wednesday, 2 December.

The Forbes Netball Association thanks everyone who contributed to make the competitions so successful. By helping with the jobs to be done each week, netball in Forbes survived 2020.

Thanks to all of the umpires who have umpired every week. Because of the extra umpires available, the teams did not have to do as many duties as they would normally be required to in order to run the competition.

Thanks, to all of the players who checked in every week, and abided by the COVID-19 Safety Plan developed by the FNA, through the guidance of NNSW.

The next Night Competitions will start in February 2021.

The Forbes Netball Association Spring Saturday Junior Inter town competition Night Competitions for both mixed and ladies’ teams will play the second last round this week.

Teams that are affected by harvest should contact the committee as soon as they know if they cannot field a full team. Teams may get players to fill in for them so all games can be played. Team representatives are asked, if they are using Facebook to communicate with the committee, please send an email rather than posting the comment so that Secretary Mon can respond, and the committee is able to help with players substituting or teams playing.

Last week, Mixed Bunch did not supply an umpire and were fined $50.

Saturday Junior Inter town competition 2021.
The Forbes Netball Association committee has been working for the past three years to establish a junior inter-town Saturday competition.

The Committee is excited to announce that an inter-town competition will be played on Saturdays during winter 2021. The Saturday junior inter-town competition will be played between Forbes, Parkes, and Young Netball Associations.

This dynamic new competition will benefit all members of the three netball associations, which includes players, coaches, and umpires.

Betland Shines At Frank Spice Classic

Nissan sponsor Michael Spice and Richard Plowes from Northparkes Mines with classic golf winner Steven Betland.

On Sunday, Steve Betland stamped himself as the form golfer in the district, winning the Frank Spice Nissan Classic with a superb round of four under par 68.

While the superbly presented Forbes course proved a test for players from most areas of the state, and some from interstate, due to the 6100 metre length complemented by fast yet true greens, it did little to deter the ability of the big hitting Forbes Club champion.

After posting par 36 scratch for the easier front nine holes of his game, Betland came together in the run home with a run of triples birdies at the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes, followed by another at the 15th for 32 scratch.

Keeping it in the family, younger brother John finished runner-up with equal par 72.

Results for the title of ladies’ champion was more exciting with current ladies’ president Julie Hurkett winning a play-off over 18-year-old Brianna Duncan after both finished equal on 84 scratch.

Saturday’s four-ball scratch winners for the Club Forbes trophy were Jacob Bernardi and Joshua Coulthurst, with one under par 37 points. The ladies’ winners were Heather Davidson and Sarah Black with 23 points.

There was one player who, despite not collecting a major trophy, left Saturday evening more than happy. Brendon Hooper scored a hole-in-one on the short par three 9th.

Feeling for the success of the Classic, Cabramatta Golf Club captain Andrew Marsh said that he felt what Forbes presented over the weekend was “as good as it gets,” and he and fellow travellers will definitely be back next year.

“This course is great, what a layout, and the greens, how good are they? A credit to all concerned and the country hospitality just as good. A top weekend and I’ll be back to play some more here,” the Sydney scratch handicap player said.
