Croquet News And Results

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Week ending 16th February

One of the most exciting games of Tuesday morning was a singles match between Barry White and John Cole. Barry held on to the end and won 7 points to 6. One of the best games of doubles was between Kevin Rubie and Alec Todd with 7, defeating John Allegri and Evelyn Mahlo with 6.

The winners of three games on Tuesday were John Browne, Alec Todd, Mal Smith, Neville Spry and Bruce Field.

Saturday’s Aussie croquet was a wonderful mild morning with a good turnout. The courts are showing the benefit of the rain we’ve had over the last few weeks. There were some really close games.

Kevin Rubie and Anne Stewart played the perfect game defeating Joan Littlejohn and John Allegri 14 to 13. Another very close game was between Merv Langfield and Geoff Cole who defeated John Allegri and Jill Rubie 14 to 13. There were only two winners of the three games. They were John Cole and Bill Scott.

All members of the club pass on their sincere condolences to our president Elvy Quirk, who lost her brother last week.

Recognising Our Sporting Heroes

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Sportsperson of the Year Association (SOYA) are delighted with the quality of the nominations they have received for the 2018 awards with the annual Presentation Dinner to be held on Saturday, 16th March at the Forbes Sport & Recreation Club.

The Forbes SOYA is a small yet hard working committee dedicated to recognising and celebrating the accomplishments of our local sports men and women as well as administrators and officials. Sport is an important= part of life and the awards are an opportunity to pay tribute to the athletes who excel in their chosen sport and thank and show appreciation to the many volunteers who give their time to ensure that children and adults of all ages have access to some of the best sporting facilities and competitions in NSW.

The awards being contested include the Junior and Senior Sportsperson, All Rounder, Coach/Trainer, Referee/Umpire/ Official, Administrator, Team and of course the Forbes Sportsperson and Runner Up for 2018.

The overall winner of the Central West Credit Union Monthly Achievers Award will also be announced on the night along with the President’s Award, Phillip Adams Encouragement Award, Merit Awards, School and Special Sports Awards and the Forbes Netball Association Terry Wade Award. The calibre of the nominations received for all the awards was of a very high standard making the job of the independent judging panel extremely difficult.

This year the special guest is Alana Thomas, former Australian Rugby Union player and Australian Wallaroo Development Coach. Alana hails from Glen Innes but has a local connection. Her career in Rugby Union commenced with the Forbes Platypi when she lived and worked in Forbes over 10 years ago and she was the winner of the Forbes Sportsperson of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Alana is looking forward to being part of the presentation and sharing her experiences representing NSW and Australia as well as her current role as coach.

The SOYA Awards would not be possible without the generous support of local businesses, allowing Forbes to be one of the last country towns in New South Wales who host a separate sporting awards ceremony.

Congratulations to all nominees and the SOYA committee look forward to seeing you all, your families and the nominating sporting organisations when the 2018 winners are announced on 16th March.

Monthly Medallists Perform Well

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday the men’s comp was the Monthly Medal 18-Hole Stroke, sponsored by Grayson, Earl, French and M Haley. The A-Grade was won by Parkes visitor, McGlashan with a 69 nett off a scratch round of 72. Runner-up and medallist, was Barry Shine with 71 nett, who has stories aplenty about his score. The B-Grade saw a runaway win by  Josh Coulthurst, finishing with a nett 66. Close behind was Garry Collits with an almost as good nett 67.

The C-Grade did well, where Robert Scott was the winner on 74 nett. Runner-up on count back, with a score of 75 nett, was Bruce Squires who edged out Bede Tooth with a better back-9.

The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back, with recipients being: 66 – J Coulthurst; 67 – G Collits; 68 – M Spice; 69 – M McGlashan; 70 – N Duncan, B Carpenter, P Maher; 71 – B Shine; R Nixon, B Parker, J Haley, D Churchill; 73 – A Brownlow, D Rhodes, I Bown, P Duke, S Kirkman, M Collits. The NTP’s went to: 9th – M McGlashan; 18th – K Sanderson.

Sunday’s Stableford Medley had a small field due to Pennants duties and the weather. Peter Grayson had the best score with 35 points, but unfortunately there were no runner-up, ball sweep or any NTP’s prizes. Sunday was the first round of the CWDGA Pennants 2019, resulting in a day of mixed results for our teams, who each played a Parkes team.

The Div 1 team had a solid win, defeating Parkes 4/1. S Betland and S Sallaway had big wins. The Div 2 team lost to Parkes 4/1, where Kim Herbert was a shining light with a win on the 20th-hole.

The Div 3 team also lost to Parkes, 3/2. The Div 4 team, with a few debutants, had a close 3/2 win over Parkes.

Croquet Results

February 14, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Week ending 9th February

It was a good turnout for our Tuesday golf croquet with all of our courts in use. We would like to welcome a new member to our club, Ray Burridge who won his first game of the day and followed it up with a win in his second. This was a wonderful start for a beginner on the courts and is a reflection of some great coaching by the more experienced members. Well done Ray!

The winners of three games on Tuesday were John Browne, Kevin Rubie, Bill Scott, Marg Styles and Lorraine Todd.

Saturday’s Aussie croquet was a bit of a surprise. After all the rain on Friday night and the overcast Saturday morning, the courts were only set out for 24 players. To our surprise more than that arrived and this ended up with one follow on game.

It was good to see our newest member Geoff Coles playing his first game of Aussie croquet. He ended up with two wins after being coached before the start by our best player, Bruce Field. There were only two winners of three games, Harley Stewart and John Cole. Well done Kath Broderick for her first win for some time after she played very well.

Steady Play Ensures Golf Comp Win

February 14, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The Saturday Men’s comp two weeks ago was an Individual Stableford sponsored by the Tuesday Golfers, and contested by a smaller field of 45 players.

The A-Division was won by Dave Mylecharane with 39 points, compiled through steady play. Runner-up was Paul Kay with 38 points, resulting from even halves of 19 points each. The B-Division saw Steve Grallelis win with 39 points, ahead of runner-up Craig Barrett on 36 points.

The ball sweep went to 36 points: 39 – D Mylecharane, S Grallelis; 38 – P Kay; 37 – B Parker, R Nixon, L O’Connor, M Wood; 36 – J Zannes, G Webb, C Barrett, N Mc- Millan. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Mat Duff; 18th – Doug Churchill.

Most scoring was on or below average with only seven scores better than par. Putting was a problem for many, exemplified by Brian Everest’s four missed 2-foot putts.

Players either missed the fairways like Ecky Dawson, spent time in the trees like Kim Herbert, or lost concentration leading to hitting the wrong ball like Craig Barrett.

Both Neil McMillan and Mike Wood lost valuable equipment, their thongs, but thankfully these were found.

The Sunday Stableford Medley was very quiet. Neil McMillan did well to win the day with 36 points. Runner-up was Ken Sanderson further back on 33 points.

There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Ray Taylor; 18th – nil, as no one hit the green.

The Stableford Medley on Monday saw A Alley win with 38 points, ahead of D Mylecharane on 36 pts. The balls weep went to: L O’Connor, S Sallaway. There were no NTP’s.

Head Pro, Ben reminds all players to keep hydrated in the hot weather. Take plenty of drink with you, aiming to drink three litres per 9-holes.

Many of the positions can be split up to share the workload. Volunteers are needed for president, secretary and treasurer as well as many other positions.

The first grading games will start the following week, when committee positions are filled to run the competition.

Nomination forms are on the FNA website and should be emailed immediately to above email. Some of the players who nominated last year are now unable to play and more players are needed. Players turning 15 this year are encouraged to also apply.

Dates for Regional League to be played at Orange are 10th and 24th March with finals on 31st March. Training is on Monday nights and all games are played indoors at the Orange PCYC. Entries for the competition close in a few weeks.

National Title Lures Golf Players To Forbes

February 7, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The Men’s Comp on Saturday, 19th January was the fifth running of the Australian 2-Person 2-Club Ambrose Medley Championship, sponsored by Cahills Footwear. There were 50 enthusiastic players scrambling for the national title.

This format requires teams of two to be very inventive with their shot making, whilst using unfamiliar sticks. The winning pair did just that, with John Zannes and Dave Rhodes finishing on nett 58. They manufactured 11 birdies, three bogeys and four pars on a day when everything went just right.

Runners up were Andy Dukes and Mike Spice with 60 nett, having finished on the same scratch score but being beaten on handicap. They did pick up other prizes, snaring the NTP on the 1st (A Dukes) and 12th Nearest to Pin 2nd shot (M Spice). Other prize winners were: NTP 3rd – S Kirkman; NTP 9th – D McAuliffe; NTP 18th M Watts; longest drive – J Zannes. The ball sweep went to 66.5 nett: 58 – J Zannes/ D Rhodes; 60 – A Dukes/ M Spice; 62.5 – L O’Connor/ D Mylecharane; 65 – D McAuliffe/ R Besgrove; 66.25 – R Webb/ P Tisdell; 66.5 – R Borger/ D Churchill.

Some fantastic shots were played, with getting onto the green from the wrong fairways.

There were also some bad shots, with one pair fluffing both drives on the 6th with the best drive not reaching the ditch.

Sunday dawned with promise of good weather, but it soon turned oppressive, leading to a small field in the Stableford Medley.

The scoring was good, Bruce Carpenter winning on countback from Steve Betland, both on 40 points.

There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Steve Betland; 18th – nil, they all missed. The 2019 CWDGA Pennants, commenced on the 3rd February with the first round being played at the Ex-Services Club. We wish all teams good luck.

Max Scores A Hole-In-One Surprise

January 31, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The Men’s Comp on 12th January was an 18-hole stroke event, sponsored by Rob Allen’s Livestock Transport, with 62 players enjoying the weather. During play, Max Haley especially enjoyed the 18th hole where he recorded a hole-in-one. As usual he was quite calm about it.

The A-Division winner was Dan Bayley, with 63 nett that was most satisfying as he had all his touch on display. Runner-up was Niel Duncan, who also had a good score finishing on 65 nett to once again be a ‘bridesmaid’.

The B-Division players were also well below par. Steve Grallelis was pleased with his game finishing on 69 nett to win. Runner- up was new member George Falvey who did well on the back-9, finishing with 70 nett.

The ball sweep went low, going to 70 nett on count back: 63 – D Bayley; 65 – N Duncan, P Maher; 66 – P Nixon; 67 – Mike Wood; 68 – Max Haley; 69 – K Sanderson, P Grayson, R Taylor, S Grallelis, A McDonald; 70 – M Spice, G Falvey, S French, D Churchill, J Haley. The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Kirkman, 18th – M Haley. The visitors included Lloyd Cotterill (Brisbane GC) and good mate Kevin Crapp (Russell Vale GC) and Stuart Hayes (Murrumbidgee). Mike Woods scored an eagle on the 2nd to start his round, while Neil McMillan lost the head on his wedge while playing a shot on the 7th, thus causing him to manufacture shots all day.

The Sunday Stableford Medley had a good field of 12, where the top scoring continued. Paul Kay was the winner on 37 points, on count back from Barb Drabsch.

The ball sweep went to 36 points, being collected by Ethel Coombs, nudging out four players on 35. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Ray Beacroft (The Grange); 18th – P Kay.

One player on the 15th tee had his ball hit the ‘Betland Tree’ and return almost directly to his feet. That mucked up his score.

The 2018 Wallace Cup was completed in 2018, with Neil McMillan victorious over Stephen Uphill. What was anticipated as an even contest, with both on the same handicap, turned into a comfortable win to Neil by 6/5.

A “New Rules 2019” presentation was the previous week and was well attended.

There is a large amount of material available, so get your handbook and any questions answered by Ben at the Pro Shop.

The 2019 CWDGA Pennants, commence on 3rd February with the first round being played at the Ex-Services Club. Please advise Ben or Stevie G if you are willing to play.

Saturday, 19th January was the Australian Championship 2-Person 2-Club Ambrose, sponsored by Cahill’s Footwear,  followed by the Stableford Medley on the Sunday.
