Another Croquet Win For Coles

March 28, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Week ending 23rd March

It was another good turnout for our Tuesday golf croquet and we welcomed to our courts Regina McMaster visiting from Ballina.

Regina partnered Ray Burridge to victory defeating John MacCullagh and Libby Smart 9-4.

Geoff Coles never fails to amaze. He has been a winner of three matches a week, won over a three week period. To my knowledge this is the first time this has been achieved.

John Allegri was the only other winner of three matches for the Tuesday game. You’re slipping Forbes croquet players!

Saturday’s Aussie croquet was played on newly mown courts. There were some close games and Anne Stewart had her first win playing two balls against Lorraine Todd and her partner Cherylin Cole. Anne won the game 14-13 in very close finish. Well done Anne!

Elvy Quirk won three games after playing well in all of her matches. Bob Murray is back on track with some good wins in previous weeks and showing he is still a winner this week with three wins. The only other winner of three games was old faithful, Kevin Rubie. Kevin is one of the most consistent players in the club.

The umpire will have their accommodation and food free for the weekend and will receive $300 for the three days of umpiring. All paid for by the players in the team. Expressions of interest for the umpire will close on Friday, 29th March, stating National badge details and should be emailed to secretary.forbesnetball@gmail.com.

Count Backs Decide Par Event

March 28, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The Saturday Men’s Par event, sponsored by Everest Auto Repairs and contested by 54 players, required count backs to decide winners and runners-up.

The A-Division had three players finishing on 5-up. The count back resulted in Alf Davies being declared the winner, ahead of runner-up Phil Maher who himself finished ahead of Phil Duke. The B-Division was easier with Craig Barrett the winner on 7-up and Jeff Haley runner-up on count with 3-up.

The ball sweep went to 1-up on count back: 7 up – C Barrett; 5 up – A Davies, P Maher, P Duke; 4 up – A Dukes, R Webb, I Bown; 3 up – S Kirkman, J Zannes, J Haley, G Falvey, B Everest, D Mylecharane; 2 up – D Culley, T Morgan, R Harrison; A Rees.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Pymont; 18th – P Dawson, neither of whom got a ‘2’.

There were a number of visitors, including – Stuart Hayes (Murrumbidgee ) Peter Jackson (Coffs Harbour), Alan Holley (Noosa) and Greg Hofman, Riall Harrison, Tony Lock, Tony Riach, Lachlan Buesnell and Ken Cobcroft from Parkes.

It was a special day for Craig, not only celebrating a win but also his birthday, and tying the best score on the back-9 with good mate Scott Kirkman.

Of special note was an eagle scored by Todd Callaghan on the 2nd hole. He was confident with his putt. He just missed another on the 7th.

The Stableford Medley on Sunday was a very quiet affair with many of the usual players recovering. The winner was Bess Shields with 40 points. There was no runner- up or ball sweep.

The NTP’s had a mixed story. Visitor Brett Byrnes (Condo) managed a good shot on the 9th, but the 18th went lonely. Brett enjoyed his day scoring 38 points off a par round.

On Friday the Annual Rugby Union Presidents Lunch Golf Game was held, attracting a field of 88 players. Results will be notified in a separate report.

News From The Netball Courts

March 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The netball games on Wednesday nights are full of action with everyone having fun playing with friends and family. The Autumn night competitions for both mixed and ladies teams have a high standard of netball, with the FNA committee catering for all the family playing together in their teams.

All team representatives are asked to please update their team sheets as sometimes the ladies and mixed games may be played on the same time slot. Team representatives are asked to write on their team sheet if any of their players are playing in the two competitions.

This week, players will not be able to take the court unless they are registered. Registration includes registration to NNSW and Forbes NA, plus the competition levy of $40 per player and $20 per player for the second competition.

The canteen will be operating with a variety of food sold each week. A roster for volunteering was discussed at the last meeting. All teams are asked to please check the roster when it comes out.

Umpiring Duty

Team representatives are asked to please check each week for umpiring duty. Representatives at a meeting last year asked if a badged umpire could go with the player umpiring, for support and to learn. This is working quite well and takes the pressure off the team to supply umpires.

Boys Gala Day

A free Boys Gala Day will be held this Friday at the netball courts from 3:30pm till 6pm. All boys will receive a free netball and they are asked to please send an email to secretary.forbesnetball@gmail.com with a booking so the afternoon can be planned with the number of players attending. Boys will have fun playing games and being involved in activities, to gain extra knowledge and skills of netball.

Croquet News

March 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Week ending 16th March

Our club made an effort to host a friendly match against West Wyalong for Tuesday’s golf croquet competition. The same minority crew set out the courts, the side show fun games and three large gazebos to cater for our visitors. Food was bought for a sausage sizzle and some desserts were prepared.

At the very last minute West Wyalong cancelled their visit. It was very disappointing for all concerned but we made the best of the day. Congratulations to Jenny Job who, as a relative newcomer, won two games out of three. The winners of three games were John Browne, Harley Stewart and Geoff Coles.

Saturday’s Aussie croquet was a quiet affair with 24 players on the courts. Man of the moment was John Job who had a great win playing two balls against Colleen Liebich, the final score was 14-13. Bob Murray is back in form, winning his three games. Other winners of three games were John Browne, John MacCullagh, Kevin Rubie, Tony Thomson and Alec Todd.

Good Finish In 4BBB Stableford

March 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The men played a 4BBB Stableford last Saturday, sponsored by C&D Floorcoverings, where 60 players managed to record some good scores.

The overall winners were Nick Ryan and Adam Borger with 49 points. A 5-pointer on the card helped their score. Paul Kay and Allan Rees were runners-up on 48 points, with both playing well.

The ball sweep went to 44 points, with lucky players being: 49 – N Ryan/A Borger; 48 – P Kay/A Rees; 47 – M Duff/ B Slack- Smith; 46 – B Parker/ D Culley, R Taylor/ C Barrett; 44 – N Duncan/ R Nixon, G Webb/ R Besgrove, L Little/ M Prior.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – A Dukes; 18th – Alf Davies. Neither got their ‘2’, with few scored overall. Tim Toohey from Springwood was the only visitor.

Putting was made more difficult with ‘duck’s packages’ on many greens. But the greens were still receptive to high shots.

A late storm caught a few players out, but most were high and dry in the clubhouse when it hit. Peter Grayson had a storm also, damaging his Achilles heel. We wish him a thorough recovery.

The Stableford Medley on Sunday was a very quiet affair. The winner was Julie Hurkett with 39 points. There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to. Bess Shields on the 9th, and to visitor Robyn Lunn (Morisett CC) on the 18th.

The CWDGA Pennants 2019 Finals were held at Wellington on Sunday. Forbes was represented by our Division 1 team, who were up against Bathurst. There was a broad spread of clubs represented across the divisions, with Division 2 – Parkes v Bathurst, Division 3 – Wellington v Mudgee and Division 4 – Cowra v Dubbo.

Our Division 1 boys contested the CWDGA Pennants Final, but unfortunately went down 4/1 to a very strong Bathurst side.

Most matches were very close, with Peter Dawson winning his by 2-up.

This Saturday is an 18-Hole Par event, sponsored by Everest Motors, and the Stableford Medley on Sunday.
