Golfers Score Well

January 24, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday the Mens comp was an 18- Hole Stableford, with 65 players in the field. Once again the scoring matched the weather.

The A-Division winner was Ted Morganwho, despite a minor blemish on the 14th hole, compiled 41 points. Runner-up on count back was Barry Parker. A few 7’s on his card hurt him.

Also on 41 points, but sadly without any honours, was our pro Simon Houston. This was, I think, his first competitive 18-hole game at Forbes. He relished being out there with the club members so much that he shot a 5-under ‘67’ to earn him the 41 points.

The B-Division saw Garry Collits with a score of 43 points relegated to runnerup by newcomer Joshua Coulthurst, who burst in with a score of 51 points. It was a fantastic round by each of them, with Josh showing real skill.

The ball sweep went to 36 points on count back, going to: 51 – J Coulthurst; 43 – G Collits; 42 – G Webb; 41 – T Morgan, B Parker; 40 – Alf Davies, T Howe; 39 – Mike Wood, D McAuliffe; 38 – J Morgan, L Grierson, P Nixon; 37 – B Squires, S McAlister and 36 – B Borger.

The NTP’s went to: 1st – Alf Davies, 18th – Simon Flynn.

The Sunday Stableford Medley comp had a small number in the field primarily due to the forecast conditions. Eileen Hush did very well to score 36 points and take the honours. She defied all common standards to do better on the back-9 rather than thefront-9, which is the reverse of everybody else. She finished ahead of Ray Taylor on 35 points.

There was no ball sweep. And there were no NTP’s as nobody hit the greens.

Weekend Golf A Pleasure

January 18, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

In keeping with the Elvis flavour, there were surprises in the weather and the golf scores, making for a good weekend.

Saturday’s event was an 18-Stroke sponsored by Rob Allen Livestock Transport, contested by 80 was played in two Divisions.

The A-Division winner was Phil Maher with 67 nett. He enjoyed pleasant conditions and maintained his form, finishing with a birdie. Runner-up was Lee Grierson, who had played early in changeable conditions.

He was 1-under par after the front-9, then parred the back-9 to present a very classy score of 71 nett.

The B-Division had a real surprise, being a nett 63 scored by Garry Pymont, showing his best form for many weeks. Runner-up was Craig Barrett who was noted to have putted brilliantly, but alas his 65 nett was not quite enough.

The ball sweep went to 73 on count back, going to: 63 – G Pymont; 65 – C Barrett; 67 – P Maher; 68 – Mitch Andrews, L Grierson, S Sallaway, S Kirkman; 69 – N Mc- Millan, T Griffiths, G Webb, P Tisdell; 70 – L O’Connor, W Judge; 71 – T Howe, B Squires; 72 – R Morris, D Bayley, M Cahill; A Alley, S Uphill and A Dukes.

The NTP’s went to: 1st – Craig Barrett, 18th – Dave Mylecharane. The Sunday Stableford Medley comp, was played by 15 players in very comfortable conditions.

Bruce Carpenter used his knowledge of the course well to score 38 points, and takethe win ahead of Ray Taylor on 37 points.

The ball sweep went to 35 points, being collected by the two gents above, and Bess Shield and Charles Dwyer, both on 35. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Steve Betland; 18th – Bruce Carpenter.

Hot Scores By Golfers

December 21, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Annual Ham Day sponsored by Kenny’s Butchery, was the Saturday competition and was played as an individual Stableford. The temperature was hot enough to crisp the golfers and roast the ham, but also led to many scorching results.

The A-Division was led by Barry Parker who finished with 43 points. Close behind was Shane Sallaway on 41 points, and secured only by count back from Ian Bown.

The B-Division was very tight with a gaggle of players within reach of the win. Greg Webb, scoring 40 points won on count back from runner-up Ken Sanderson.

The ball sweep went to 37 pts on count back, being shared by: 43 – B Parker; 41 – S Sallaway, I Bown; 40 – G Webb,
K Sanderson, R Morris, K Herbert; 39 – A Tucker, B Slack-Smith, R Borger; 38 – C Barrett, R Besgrove; 37 – S Uphill, P Nixon, J Earl, S Grallelis. The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Nixon; 18th – S Sallaway.

Frank Donohoe was the sharp-shooter on the day, scoring 2’s on the 1st and 9th.

The course was playing sufficiently well to allow some personal milestones to be scored. Stephen Uphill had his first ever birdie on the 17th hole. A handy drive, followed by a ‘driver off the deck’ that finished 2 foot from the pin, and an easy putt finished it off.

Sunday was the Stableford Medley, also contested in hot sunshine heavy conditions, which led to a drop in numbers.

Ash Tucker, with 37 points, won the day on count back from Andrew Dukes. There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Ray Taylor and 18th – no one.

Saturday 23rd December is an 18-hole Stableford, Sunday 24th December is a Stableford Medley, Tuesday 26th December is a Stableford Medley, Saturday 30th December a Canadian Foursomes and Sunday 31st December a Stableford Medley.

Wishing you all good fortune from Santa, a happy New Year’s Eve, and hoping to see you next year.

Medal Winners Triumph Over Hot Weather

December 14, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The competition on Saturday was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Central West Diesel. Players were keen to get back onto the course after missing a weekend due to wet conditions, but they found the conditions hot and difficult.

The A-Grade was won by Richard Nixon with a nett 68. His front-9 included only one ‘5’ and that on the 2nd. Runner-up was Barry Shine with a nett 70.

The B-Grade winner was Graham Newport with a nett 68. Warwick Judge was runner-up with a nett 69. The competitive C-Graders were four players finishing on 73 nett. The winner on count back was Bruce Chandler ahead of Mark Watts, both on 73 nett.

The ball sweep went to 73 nett on count back, going to: 68 – G Newport, R Nixon; 69 – W Judge; 70 – B Shine; 71 – P Maher, J Earl; 72 – D Bayley, T Griffiths; 73 – B Chandler, M Watts, B Carpenter, P Grayson, B Parker, F Hanns, D Rhodes, S Kirkman, T Edols. The NTP’s went to: 9th – R Webb; 18th – A Tucker.

The course played really well despite the recent wet conditions. The only additional obstacles were a bit of water at the back  of the 3rd and a wider than normal carry across the 4th, but scoring was still difficult.

Sunday’s Stableford Medley was won by Peter Barnes, who enjoyed the heat and scorched around to score 44 points. He was ahead of Bob Borger on 41, who earned runner-up on count back from James Earl.

The ball sweep went to 38, with James Earl (41) and Ash Tucker (38) getting balls. Ash almost made headlines with his NTP on the 9th. Dave Rhodes got the NTP on the 18th, but missed his ‘2’.

Locals Victorious In Nissan Classic

November 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Last weekend was the annual Forbes Nissan Classic. This was contested by nearly 180 players with many being visitors from Sydney, West Australia and places in between.

The Scratch winner of the Classic, a stroke event, was local player Peter Nixon. His 71 scratch was accomplished with very little drama. He was well ahead of many of the A-grade, when numerous of them had problems with the greens and the trees.

Another local to taste success was Frank Hanns, who won the C-grade Handicap with a nett 67. He had one of those days when everything meshed well and it was all too easy.

The biggest contingent was a group of 10 players from Cabramatta, closely followed by a group of 9 players from Nelson Bay GC. There were even players from West Australia, who joined the event.

The weekend was an undoubted success, made even more so by the strong support of the sponsors. Once again Frank Spice Nissan was the major sponsor, but there were many others ensuring a lengthy prize list.

On Saturday a 4BBB Stableford event was played. The winners were once again locals, Andrew Cogswell and Peter Nixon with a score of 45 points. They were one shot ahead of a group of six pairings on 44 points. The runners-up were determined by count back, going to Steve Betland and Charlie Dwyer.

November 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday the competition was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Jelbart’s Tyrepower. A field of 62 players enjoyed the sun and contributed some good scores.

The B-Grade saw Tony Cogswell scoring a nett 69 finish, ahead of his son Andy who managed a nett 71.

The C-Grade winner was Clayton Alley a nett 70, which included an ‘11’ on the 2nd. Runner-up was Bruce Squires on nett 71.

The ball sweep went to 73 nett on count back, going to: 67 – P Dawson; 69 – T Cogswell; 70 – M Woods, C Alley; 71 – B Squires, A Cogswell, A Dukes, P Kay, P Barnes, D Rhodes; 72 – T Callaghan, T Morgan, C Barrett, L O’Connor, S Grallelis; 73 – F Hannes. The NTP’s went to: 9th – T Griffiths; 18th – Alf Davies.

The Sunday Stableford Medley was supported by a good group. Four players finished on 37 points. Ethel Combs was announced the winner, ahead of Ray Taylor. The ball sweep went to 37, being awarded to Stu French and Bruce Carpenter.

Golfers Enjoy The Weekend

November 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Last Saturday the competition was an 18- hole Stableford event. Even though there had been a multitude of golf over the past few weekends, many players were still keen to enjoy the fresh air and good fellowship.

The A-division was won by Scott Kirkman who seemed to be a tree height or two above everybody else. Runner-up was Niel Duncan on 37 points, on count back from a tight group of players.

The B-division went to Graham Newport with a finely composed 38 points. The ‘starting with a par on the 1st usually leads to calamity’ curse did not affect him. Runner- up was Bruce Squires with 37 points.

The ball sweep went to 36 points on count back, going to: 40 – S Kirkman; 38 – G Newport; 37 – B Quires, F Donohoe, N Duncan, P Grayson, F Hanns, N McMillan;

36 – P Barnes, P Cowhan, A Dukes and C Barrett.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Carpenter; 18th – T Morgan. Neither got their 2’s.

Sunday was a busy day with the Rotary Charity Golf Day commencing in the morning and a Stableford Medley run in the afternoon.

The Rotary Charity Stableford Medley, saw 55 players participating.

A big thank you to all sponsors and helpers and especially to Evolution mining for their support. All participants can be proud to have provided nearly $1,000 to the Forbes High School Wellness Hub.

Later on Sunday a Stableford Medley was played, with a small number of participating players. The winner was Andy Cogswell. There was no ball sweep.

The Nissan Classic will be held on 11th and 12th November. On Saturday there will be a Stableford Medley. Sunday will be the 18-hole Stroke Nissan Classic and good scores are expected. The tee time sheet is quite full for this day, but give the Pro Shop a ring to ensure you get your name down.

John Betland Crowned Champion

October 26, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The 3rd and 4th rounds of the Men’s Championships, sponsored by Lachlan Commodities, were held last weekend. For many in the field of 71, Saturday was ‘moving day’ but Sunday was ‘oh what might have been’.

In the A-Grade John Betland continued his dominance with a 68 scratch score on Saturday and 76 on Sunday. This was enough to win by 11 shots from Dan Bayley (70, 75) ahead of an out of luck Steve Betland (78, 80).

The A-Reserve Grade saw Terry Griffiths hold his lead with well composed scores of 87, 88. Finishing like a greyhound was Doug Churchill (89, 83), who got there on count back from Bruce Carpenter.

The B-Grade saw runaway leader Robb Webb stumble a bit but going on to win with his 84, 92 finish. Runner-up was Scott Kirkman who flew under the radar with 92, 88 to finish three shots back.

The C-Grade had leader Rod Besgrove (96, 100) finish as the winner. Runner-up was Craig Barrett (93, 93) only one shot back.

The results for the Daily Comps sponsored by Pool Magic were: Saturday in the A-division Dan Bayley (66 nett) from John Betland (69 nett). In the B-division it was Dave Rhodes (70 nett) from Michael Browne (71). On Sunday in the A-division D Churchill (71 nett) on count back from P Dawson. In the B-division, the winner was C Alley (nett 71) ahead of A Alley (71).

The best shot all weekend was that of Neil McMillan on the 9th. His tee shot finished only 5cm’s from the cup and that much short of a hole in one.

Presentations will be held on 18th November after the day’s golf, which is the ‘Medal of the Medallists’.

The Rotary Charity Day is on this Sunday. Group play with a 10am shot gun start. Contact the Pro Shop for details.

Happy Days In Medal Comp

October 12, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Monthly Medal, sponsored by Forbes Concrete, was held last Saturday. The field of 67 players produced good low scores.

The A-Grade was won by Alf Leslie, with perhaps his best game of the year. His 67 Nett was one better than John Betland’s 68, off a 66 Scratch score. The B-Grade required a count back with Jeff Haley sneaking past Peter Grayson after both finished on 69 Nett.

The C-Grade also scored ‘under par’. Bruce Chandler won with 69 Nett, ahead of Rod Besgrove on 70 Nett. The ball sweep went to 73 nett on count back, going to: 67 – A Davies; 68 – J Betland; 69 – J Haley, P Grayson, B Chandler; 70 – M Collits, R Besgrove, T Griffiths, A Tucker; 72 – D Culley, S French; 73 – J Zannes, S McAlister, L O’Connor, D Bayley, D McAuliffe and P Cowhan.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Kirkman; 18th – B Everest. There were only seven, 2’s with King Betland scoring 2’s on the 1st and the 18th.

There was no Sunday Stableford Medley due to the welcoming rain.

It is with sadness that we record the passing of Bob Doolin. Bob and his wife Daine were very strong supporters of the Golf Club many years back. Bob has continued their memories by sponsoring the ‘Daine Doolin Memorial’ day.

The Summer Sixes competition started this week. There is still room to register more teams or individuals. Contact Simon at the Pro Shop on 6851 1554.

The Nissan Classic arrangements are going well. The Tee Times list is now in the Pro Shop, please put your name down as soon as possible.

Rounds one and two of the Club Champs are on the 14th and 15th of October. There will be no Stableford Medley on Sunday.
