Perfect Strike For Golfer

July 26, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Warwick Judge fired the perfect shot during play in the Sunday Stableford Medley, scoring a hole-in-one on the 9th. This finely struck pitching wedge, finished off a good round, having started on the back-9. This is his second, but most satisfying, hole-inone as it was a pure golf shot.

Saturday was the 4-Ball Stableford Multiplier, sponsored by the Tuesday golfers.

This format requires good arithmetic, which is second nature for the Tuesday golfers who manipulate their stories well.

The winners were Brian Doyle and Greg Webb who combined well to finish with 81 points, despite only managing a point each for a multiplier ‘1’ point on the last hole.

Runners-up were Tom Edols and Milton Cartwright, who managed 80 points, which included a few ‘zero’s’ on their card. However, these misses were offset by a ‘12’ and a number of 9’s.

The ball sweep went to 67 points, going to: 81 – Doyle/G Webb; 80 – Edols/ Cartwright; 76 – Chandler/Bown; 74 – Dawson/ J Betland; 71 – Howe/G Betland; 68 – Rhodes/R Webb and 67 – Besgrove/Sallaway.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Doyle; 18th – S Sallaway.

The multiplier effect can produce unexpected results. One player’s good play (Andrew Dukes with an eagle on the 6th) can be offset by a miss by their partner (Mike Spice missed his putts) to record a zero.

As always, continuous scoring is important. While 9’s and 12’s are good, the best individual hole score was achieved by Troy Howe and Geoff Betland, with a ‘16’ on the 7th.

On Sunday the Stableford Medley had 14 participants who ensured their shot making was good.

The winner for the day was Michael B Wood with 38 points, who needed the count back to pip Warwick Judge, also on 38.

The ball sweep went to 36 points, being collected by Ash Tucker and Jill Cripps. The NTP’s were easily decided – Warwick Judge on the 9th and Mike Wood (the dad) on the 18th.

The LVDGA Men’s 4BBB District Final is set to be held at Forbes on 5th August. The winners go to Bonneville for some fun time.

Nominations are needed for the Sand-Grass Greens Championships set for 18th, 19th August. Nominations close on 6th August. There is a ‘4-for-3’ nomination incentive and also a team prize.

Foursomes Championships Decided

July 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Foursomes are a championship event played over two days, and for which the sponsorship by S&S Welsh Transport is greatly appreciated.

The overall results were: • 36-hole Scratch winners: D Bayley/ P Dawson 153

• 36-hole Scratch runners-up: A Dukes/ S Sallaway 159

• 36-hole Handicap winners: B Thomas/ A Tucker 140

• 36-hole runners-up: D Bayley/ P Dawson 147

The day-1 Scratch leaders were Andrew Dukes and Shane Sallaway with a score of 76, ahead of Steve Betland and Mark Collits on 77. However, both pairings had poor scores on day-2, while the Bayley/Dawson pairing surged forward with a 75, three shots better than their day-1 score.

The day-1 Handicap leaders were Dukes/ Sallaway (70.5) but their day-2 score pushed them back. Brett Thomas and Ash Tucker followed their day-1 score of 71.5 with a very good 68.5 to leap-frog into the winner’s jackets.

The day-1 ball sweep went to 75 net on count back, going to: 70.5 – Dukes/ Sallaway; 71.5 – Thomas/Tucker; 73.5 – Churchill/A Borger; 74 – R Nixon/N Duncan and 75 – Bayley/Dawson, N McMillan/B Carpenter, S Betland/Collits. The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Carpenter; 18th – S Sallaway.

The day-2 ball sweep went to 74 nett, going to: 68.5 – Thomas/Tucker; 72 – Bayley/ Dawson and 74 – R Nixon/N Duncan. The NTP’s went to: 9th – W Judge; 18th – J Betland.

The best exhibition of wonderful play goes to Niel Duncan and Richard Nixon on day-2. Their driving was not as good as before but it was around the greens that they excelled. Between them, they chipped in four times – on the 3rd, 4th, 10th and 15th – for pars and only needed 21 putts on the other 14 holes.

On Sunday there was a Stableford Medley played by a very small crowd who wanted a normal game. Dave Clarke won the day with 35 points, ahead of Ian Bown on 30. There was no ball sweep and no NTP’s as everyone missed the green.

The junior clinics are still being run on Tuesday afternoon, commencing at 4:30pm. Contact Simon in the Pro Shop on 6851 1554 for details.

Monthly Medals Decided

July 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Walkers Ag-n-Vet, contested by 64 players in difficult conditions.

The A-Grade winner was Steve Betland with a nett 74. A good front-9 was offset by an ordinary back-9. Runner-up was Mark Collits on 76 nett, who snuck in ahead of two other players.

The B-Grade winner was Brian Everest with a 70 nett. He had a good back-9 after an indifferent front-9. Runner-up was Brian Doyle with 71 nett.

The C-Graders put in some good scores with Milton Cartwright (71) and Geoff Betland (73) showing what could be done.

The ball sweep went to 76 nett on count back, going to: 70 – B Everest; 71 – M Cartwright, B Doyle, A Borger; 72 – P Barnes, S Uphill; 73 – G Betland; 74 – L Little, P Kay, S Betland; 75 – A Callaghan, D Culley and 76 – G Coles, M Collits, S Kirkman, N McMillan, R Nixon. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Terry Griffiths; 18th – Troy Howe.

The Sunday Stableford Medley was played by a very small crowd with Barb Drabsch (30 points) taking the overall win and the NTP’s.

The draw for the Wallace Cup (match play on handicap) will be made this weekend, so if you want to be ‘IN’ contact the club captain on 6851 5293.

Two important LVDGA events are very close. The Mixed Fourball Championships will be held at Grenfell on 22nd July and the Men’s Fourball District Final will be held at Forbes on 5th August.

Betland And Dawson Are 4Ball Champs

June 28, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday was the John Davis Mazda sponsored 4BBB Stroke Championship, contested by 62 players. The scratch champions were Steve Betland and Peter Dawson with a score of 70, while the handicap champions were John Ridley and Bede Tooth with a nett 61.

Runners-up in the stroke were Dan Bayley and Todd Callaghan with an even par scratch of 72. The runners-up in the handicap were Rod Besgrove and Greg Webb with a 64.5 nett.

The ball sweep went to 67 nett on count back, going to: 61 – J Ridley/B Tooth; 64.5 – G Webb/R Besgrove; 66 – A Alley/C Alley, F Hanns/G Coles, A Borger/D Churchill; 66.5 – R Nixon/J Haley, T Sharpe/L O’Connor and 67 – D Bayley/T Callaghan, R Smith/ P Pymont. The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Betland; 18th – Alf Davies.

The Stableford Medley on Sunday was won by Ron Morris with 35 points, on count back from Peter Dawson. The ball sweep went to 34, which included Ray Taylor and Andrew Dukes. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Scott Kirkman, 18th – Bess Shields.

A couple of reminders to players for their action: Firstly, get your name on the nomination sheet for the Wallace Cup Handicap Matchplay event. The nomination sheet is on the Pro Shop notice board.

Secondly, set your diary to participate in the ‘Strategic Planning Workshop’, to be held at the Golfie on Thursday, 12th July and run by the Forbes Shire. It commences at 5:30pm with an expected 7pm finish. This is very important to plan for the future development of the club.

Events coming up include the Men’s Foursomes Championships to be held on 14th and 15th July; the LVDGA Mixed 4B Championships held at Grenfell on Sunday, 22nd July; the LVDGA Mens 4BBB Championship at Forbes on 5th August and not forgetting the Sand Grass Greens Championships scheduled for 18th and 19th August.

We record with sadness the passing of Ash Tucker’s mother last week. She passed away suddenly in her sleep. All club members express condolences to Ash and his family.

Dan Bayley Devours Course

June 21, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday was an 18-hole Individual Stroke event, sponsored by Country Mile Motor Inn, with 60 players braving the cold conditions.

The A-division winner was Dan Bayley who fired a nett 65 score, helped by a 2-under back-9. Runner-up was Barry Shine with nett 69 who put together two similar halves. The B-division went to Anthony Alley with a nett 71 and on count back. He had some good shots, notably an eagle on the 4th and some not so good shots. Runner-up was Richard Smith, who played steadily throughout.

The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back, going to: 65 – D Bayley; 69 – B Shine, T Cogswell; 70 – T Callaghan; 71 – A Alley, R Smith; 72 – R Webb, G Drane, J Betland, A Rees; 73 – S Grallelis, B Slack-Smith; 74 – R Morris, T Griffiths and 75 – Martin Woods, S Sallaway.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – T Callaghan; 18th – Martin Woods. The only visitor was Stuart Hayes (Murrumbidgee GC), who was pleased to be in warmer climates.

Anthony Alley’s tee shot on the 4th hole hit the green, bounced and got tangled in the flag, then dropped to stop inches from the hole. Marty Cahill had opposite fortunes on the 15th, earning many penalties to finish with a 13.

The Stableford Medley on Sunday was played by a small group in very cold conditions. The day belonged to Ethel Coombs with 31 points. There was no runner-up and no ball sweep. There was only one NTP, being on the 18th and this went to Ethel Coombs.

Busy Times On The Golf Course

June 7, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s men’s event was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by BWR Accountants and Advisors. The field of 64 players had few standout scores and many calamities.

The A-grade winner was Peter Nixon, who was surprised to see that his score of 75 nett was enough to take the medal honours.

Runner-up on count back, was Ecky Dawson on 76 nett. The B-grade went to Graham Newport with a nett 70, the best score of the day. Runner-up was Martin Cahill, whose 73 nett was very gallant indeed.

The C-grade produced a wide range of results. Ash Tucker compiled 71 nett to be the winners. Runner-up was Graeme Hopkins with 73 nett, and who was especially pleased to enter the winners circle.

The ball sweep went to 76 nett on count back, going to: 70 – G Newport; 71 – A Tucker; 73 – G Hopkins, M Cahill; 74 – B Slack-Smith, A Borger, D Clarke, F Hanns; 75 – P Nixon and 76 – G Webb, P Dawson, B Everest, K Herbert, J Betland, P Barnes, J Haley, S French. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Richard Nixon; 18th – Paul Kay.

On Sunday the 27-hole Mixed Foursomes Championship was played, with fifteen pairings participating.

The scratch winners were A Dukes/ S Crosby with a total of 131. Their win was set up by a steadfast 85 scratch on the first 18-holes. Scratch runners-up, on count back, were A Grierson/ K Stirling with a 136 total.

The handicap winner honours also went to Dukes/Crosby, with a total of 109.5. Runners- up went to Stephen and Eve Uphill on 114.5. The Uphill’s produced the best net on the final-9 but they could not overcome some unfortunate penalties incurred on the 9th hole.

The ball sweep went to 116.5, going to:

Dukes/Crosby, Uphill/Uphill, A Cogswell Davies and Taylor/Cripps. The NTP’s went to: 9th – D Rhodes; 18th – T Griffiths. The 9th hole brought many pairings undone, especially on the final-9. While 3’s were common, so too were 5’s and worse.

The real shocker was a ‘9’.

The top prize, the West Wyalong Open Champion and A-grade scratch winner, went to Dan Bayley of Forbes, with a scratch score of 72. He found many different places on the course but always managed to score well.

Other Forbes players among the prize winners were: Greg Webb C-grade runner up; Peter Nixon A-grade NTP and Steve Grallelis C-grade NTP.

On Sunday, there will be a junior golf event run by Simon Houston. This will showcase some of the best junior talent around the regional areas.

Busy Weekend For Golfers

May 24, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes golfers enjoyed three days of golf last weekend with a Legends Pro-Am on Friday, Mens Stroke comp on Saturday and the Sunday Stableford Medley.

On Friday 110 players, including 32 professionals, contested the Legends Pro-Am.

The pros had a three-way tie for 1st place, with Martin Petersen (Bega), John Onions (Vic) and Bryce Mawhinney (Young) finishing on 1-under.

There were 18 clubs represented among the club players, who contested Stableford in three men’s grades and a ladies grade, as well as numerous NTP’s.

Forbes players featured well in the prizes, with Jim Carpenter (A-grade scratch), Peter Dawson (A-grade Stableford), Graham Newport (B-grade Stableford), Stuart French (B-grade Stableford runner-up) and Jenny Fletcher (ladies Stableford runnerup) all taking home prizes.

The pros found the course challenging and voted the greens the best they had played on this year. Thanks to the Forbes Shire and the many other valuable sponsors for helping to make this happen again.

Saturday was a stroke event, sponsored by B&C Autos. Many of the field of 65 had played on Friday and managed to find ways to drop shots with ease.

In the A-division, Neil McMillan took the winner’s spot with 70 nett on count back from Stuart French (70 nett). The B-division went to Andrew McDonald (67 nett) ahead of Tom Edols (68) who showed that straight and consistent can return a good score.

The ball sweep went to 74 nett on count back, with the lucky recipients being: 67 – A McDonald; 68 – T Edols, F Donohoe; 69 – B Squires, D Rhodes; 70 – N McMillan, S French; 72 – R Taylor, T Griffiths; 73 – D Bayley, P Pymont, M Collits, L Byrne and 74 – M Westwood, R Borger, P Dawson, C McMillan.

Forbes Open Success

May 17, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Open held on Sunday, attracted a field of 120 who travelled from NSW and Victoria to play. It was good to see many returning players who were keen to play here again.

Once again credit goes to the greens staff and volunteers for their work in presenting the course to a high standard. Many visitors commented on how true, but challenging they were. Thanks also to Simon Houston for keeping the field on time.

The winner was Konrad Ciupek with a scratch score of 68. He had travelled from Melbourne for the event, keen to improve his experience as one of the sub-elite players in that state. He played alongside scratch golfer Will Arnold (Penrith), who between them provided a dazzling display of shot making. Konrad’s score 4-under was always going to be hard to beat but eventually for contenders it came down to holing the putts when needed.

There was qualification also for two players to the NSW Seniors Open. The first spot went to Daryl McAuliffe and the second spot went to Peter Zotti (Wagga Wagga). Both were well pleased.

Also available was a spot for a player and two friends to play in the NSW Open Pro-Am. Local player Brett Thomas won this with the best nett score of the day of 67. There was a long line of mates eagerly shouting ‘pick me’.

The main prizes went to: A-Grade Scratch – Konrad Ciupek (Victoria GC) 68; B-Grade Scratch – John Finlay (Manly) 84 and CGrade Scratch – Brett Thomas 67.

The Forbes winners were: A-Grade Handicap Runner-up – Shane Sallaway nett 72 c/b; B-Grade Handicap Winner
– Rob Webb nett 71; B-Grade Handicap Runner-up – Andrew McDonald nett 73; CGrade Handicap Winner – Greg Webb nett 68; Veteran Handicap Winner – Greg Webb (68) and Junior Handicap Winner – Cameron
McMillan (75).

The NTP’s went to: 1st – A-Grade: K Ciupek (Victoria GC); 3rd A-Grade – R Nixon, B-Grade – F Collie, C-Grade – nil; 9th – CGrade – C Fealy (W/Wyalong); 18th – B Grade L O’Connor.

Monthly Medals Decided

May 10, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Adept Plumbing.

Most of the field of 80 players found the scoring quite difficult but the winners found it a breeze.

The A-Grade winner was Peter Grayson, who played consistent golf to record a nett 70. Runner-up, once again, was Phil Maher on 72 nett, who had a roller-coaster round and may have won with a bit of luck.

The B-Grade title went to Rob Webb with a nett 70. He was consistent all day. Ian Bown was runner-up with nett 71. A high score on the 17th included an air swing.

The C-Grade was won by John Pritchard, a visitor from Orange with a nett 67. However, the medal goes to runner-up, Allan Rees with his 69 nett.

The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back, going to: 66 – J Morgan; 67 – J Pritchard; 69 – A Rees; 70 – P Grayson, R Webb, T Edols; 71 – I Bown; 72 – P Maher; 73 – J Zannes, P Dawson, B Squires, T Hanson; 74 – P Pymont, R Borger, B Thomas; 75 – M Haley, P Nixon, J Haley, G Forrest, R Davies, W Judge and G Coles.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Marty Woods; 18th – F Donohoe. Neither got their ‘2’. There was a big group of visitors from Wentworth GC and Tony Hanson from Shoalhaven. We may see them again for the Open this weekend.

There was no Stableford Medley on Sunday. Instead the day belonged to the Forbes Ladies Open, which was contested by 71 players. Players travelled from Mudgee, Wellington and our near neighbours.

There will be full report provided but for those interested, the scratch winners over the three grades contested were, A-Grade: Catherine Cox (Mudgee) with 89; B-Grade: Sally Crosby (Fbs) with 98 and C-Grade: Deb Dingwall (Fbs) with 103.
