Forbes Shire General Manager To Depart

August 24, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Shire Council announced the departure of their General Manager, Danny Green. Danny resigned his position and will depart Council by the end of September. “It was with great sadness that I handed my resignation to Council,” Danny said.

“The decision has been taken in the interests of my family but I’ve enjoyed my time in Forbes immensely and I am very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve.”

Danny has been at the helm of Forbes Shire Council since July 2016. Key achievements during this time included assisting the Forbes Shire through the 2016 floods and the subsequent recovery.

“The Forbes Shire road network suffered over $8.3 million worth of damage during the flood and work to repair this damage continues almost 12 months later.”

Additional achievements included the restructure of the Council’s community, economic development and human resource functions, a focus on project and long-term financial planning and a root and branch review of the organisation’s structure.

Danny was also responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the new Community Strategic Plan.

“The Community Strategic Plan provides the framework for Council operations and direction for the next four years so this is a particularly important document.”

Infrastructure works embarked upon or continued under Danny’s leadership include the Central West Livestock Exchange expansion, the Northern Bypass, the third bore and the purchase of the Lachlan Vintage Village.

“Whilst I am very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve, it couldn’t have been done without the hardworking, diligent staff of Forbes Shire Council.”

Danny said he had faith in the future of Forbes. “This is a tremendously strong and resilient community as we all witnessed during the flood event. The town has some incredible people and that can give all residents faith in the future of Forbes.”

Near Eagle and Win For Haley

June 8, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s Monthly Medal 18-Hole Stroke had a large field of 59 players, but the scores generally indicated many players needed a tune up.

The top story of the day goes to Max Haley who not only won the B-grade with the best score of the day, but nearly scored an eagle on the 15th. A wayward drive was followed by a lay-up to the middle of the fairway, but well short of the creek. His fairway wood arched past the trees, bounced on the front of the green and rolled, just skirting the hole to leave a 12” tap in birdie.

Tim West won the A-grade with 74 nett, one shot ahead of runner-up Mark Collits’ 75 nett. For both it was a case of no real disasters. The B-grade went to Max Haley with 69 nett. Dave Earl was runner-up with nett 74.

In the C-grade Brett Slack-Smith scored nett 70, and runner-up was Geoff with 73 nett.

The ball sweep went to 76 nett on count back: 69 – M Haley; 70 – B Slack-Smith; 73 –GDrane;74–DEarl,TWest,PTisdell,S Bate, I Bown; 75 – M Collits, L Byrne; 76 – A Dukes, B Squires, J Betland, B Collie and P Cowhan. The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Daw- son; 18th – B Chandler.

On Sunday 20 pairs competed in the 27- Hole Mixed Foursomes Championship in beautiful sunny weather with a crisp temperature.

Jean and Warwick Judge were nett leaders after 18 holes, with Stirling/Grierson on 91, only one shot ahead of Davidson/Nixon in the scratch. The best third 9-holes nett went to Scott/McDonald who ‘came home with a wet sail’ to score 31.75. The best 9-hole scratch went to Davidson/Nixon with their 45.

The final winners were Fran and Rich- ard Smith who took the 27-Hole Mixed Foursomes Handicap honours with a nett 112.5. Runners-up were Jean and Warwick Judge with 113.25 nett. An 18-hole playoff is needed to determine the Mixed Foursomes Scratch winners. Stirling/Grierson and Davidson/Nixon both finished on 137.

Question of the Week

April 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

What is it about Armstrong Siddeley cars that appeal to you the most?

Phil Irwin:
I am from Berambing in the Blue Mountains and spending time in the Central West on the bushranger trail. I was thrilled to find this rally. I really like the wood grained dashboards – and the size of the engines!

Margaret and Fred Vogelsang: These cars have so many magnificent features, are of such quality and are extremely elegant. We particularly like the bonnet emblems of the sphinx – and they are different on every model!

Don Rath, and Bev and Lloyd Gerdes: We have never heard of these cars, however we are impressed with the preselected gear box which was so advanced for the era as well as the unusual colours, especially the aqua and the cream.

Avoid The Flu This Winter!

March 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing and close contact.

Unlike a cold, symptoms such as fever, sore throat and muscle aches develop sud- denly and last about a week. In some cases, severe illness and complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis can develop, which can result in hospitalisation and even death. The flu can also make some existing medical conditions worse.

Annual vaccination is the best way of preventing the flu and any associated illness.

You should get the flu shot every year because the flu virus is constantly changing. Every year, the flu vaccine changes too, so it protects against the flu strains which are most likely to be around during that winter.

Flannery’s Pharmacy is providing flu immunisation for adults over 18 years of age and vaccinations are available now. Flannery’s will be hosting immunisation clinics on Monday, 27th March and Thursday, 30th March. You can make an appointment instore or by calling the pharmacy on 6852 1111. Although an appointment is advisable, our accredited pharmacist may be available to administer the vaccine at other times so feel free to ask next time you are instore.

The flu virus can be especially dangerous for elderly people, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and very young children, as well as for peo- ple with underlying medical conditions. For people who are in these at risk categories, you may be able to access free immunisa- tion from your GP.

For more information ask instore or call Flannery’s Pharmacy on 6852 1111.

Get On Top Of Your Finances In 5 Easy Steps

March 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Here are 5 easy ways to start taking control of your financial situation… remember, money is just a servant, you are the master!

Step 1: Review your financial situation The only person responsible for your finan- cial situation is you. Work out where your finances are right now. Write down what as- sets and debts you have, take away your debts from your assets and see how you’re travelling.

Step 2: Take control of your debt

If you have debt, it’s important to ensure you’re getting a good deal on your interest rate, possibly look at consolidating loans to reduce interest, and pay well above the minimum repayments so that the debt is paid off ASAP. GOLDEN RULE: Pay off credit card debt every month.

Step 3: Build an emergency fund.

It’s hard to get ahead financially if you’re not saving anything. Start saving some money from every pay cheque and build up an emergency savings account.

Step 4: Be your own super hero

Most people don’t understand superan- nuation because no one has explained it to them. Super is simply a way to save money for your retirement and pay less tax on the money. You have enormous control over it and once you understand the power of su- per, you’ll pay attention from that moment forward.

Step 5: Invest in financial education

Hopefully the ideas in this article are starting to give you a heads-up that managing money isn’t really that hard once you learn how. Spend a day at a Wealth Train work- shop and let us share 15 years of experi- ence with you to give you all the tools you need!

Cheers, Daniel

Forbes High School student Baedon Isbester is one of the recipients of the Victor Chang School Science Awards this year. He and other students from NSW schools were presented with their awards at a special ceremony held at the Dubbo Regional Council recently. Professor Jamie Vandenberg, Deputy Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney presented the awards.

Principal of Forbes High School, Charles Dwyer, said: “Baedon was nominated by our science teachers as he has demonstrated the highest achievement in scientific studies throughout the year. I congratulate Baedon on his committed approach to his studies and the recognition that he has achieved.” The Victor Chang Science Awards were
established over a decade ago to honour bright, young students excelling in the subject, with a hope that they consider a career in that field.

Dr Victor Chang made pioneering contributions to the field of heart transplantation because of his curious and enquiring mind and passion for discovery. The more than 200 winning students will be invited to tour the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Darlinghurst, Sydney next month and learn from world renowned researchers, all working towards finding cures for heart disease. They will also have the opportunity to do work experience with leading researchers on the day.

Students Connect With The Environment

August 4, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

EcoBug

More than 500 Stage 3 students from Forbes, Parkes, Eugowra and Tullamore celebrated Schools Tree Day as part of Eco Day 2016 last Friday. Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) provided bus travel and workshops to Year 5 and 6 students to enable them to be involved in a variety of environmental and rural related activities.

The workshops included making NetWaste Worm Farms, Plant Care and
Propagation with Bunnings, Travelbugs Insects, FishCare with volunteer Russell Spencer, who also talked about Wiradjuri culture, weeds demonstration and talk by the Forbes and Parkes Shire Councils and a saleyards tour with Cooper Byrnes from Langlands Hanlon.

The day finished with a hands-on workshop by Paul Kirk, also known as ‘The Snake Man’, and on invasive species. Paul allowed the students to get up close with reptiles, including pythons. He talked to them about snake safety, how to handle non-venomous snakes and what to do if bitten. Chris Lane and Jessica Marsh from Invasive Species CRC spoke about how domestic pets could become a pest in certain environments. They had a selection of preserved animals, monitoring devices, skins and traps that are used to manage invasive species.

“We want the kids to go away thinking about what they can do in their own homes and schools that can make a difference and prevent needless wastage. We hope that students leave the day with a wider perspective of the connection between humans and the environment that we live in,” said Margot Jolly, CWLL Chairperson.

The Central West Livestock Exchange facility is available for free for Eco Day each year and the contribution of staff at the Exchange is greatly appreciated. Bernardi’s Supa IGA provided sausages and bread for lunches, which were distributed by the Skillset Green Army Team. Funding to CWLL to run Eco Day activities was made available through the Central West Local Land Services. The day would not be possible without the support from the Forbes and Parkes Shire Councils, presenters, volunteers, Skillset Green
Army and schools from Parkes, Forbes, Eugowra and Tullamore.
