Rowan Woods

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here?
I moved to Warroo from Parkes when I was 3. I went to primary school in Warroo and attended High School in Forbes. In 1992 I moved to Forbes so have lived in town for 25 years.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work?
I work at Jemalong Wool. The best thing about my work is the people I work with and our clients.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends?
To unwind I drive the boat whilst friends and family water ski, fly my Pilot Cherokee when I get the chance, and pottering around my garden.

What are you really good at?
That is a hard one… I am told I am good at diplomacy and my kids love my poached eggs.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? To fly like a bird.

What is your pet hate? Disloyalty and rudeness. In addition, people who mispronounce kilometres.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. The best holiday ever was in 1987 when Sue and I backpacked for five months through Europe and the British Isles. We stayed with friends in Scotland, swam in Loch Ness, drove around England and Ireland and got a EuRail train pass and travelled in Spain and Greece. We loved it as the weather was hot like here, and it was as cheap as chips.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here?
I have lived in Forbes since I was about three years old. Forbes is a wonderful place to live because of our friendly com- munity. Forbes is truly amazing because if there is a crisis the whole community works together to help and support those in need.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work?
I work for a Government department. What I enjoy most is working with people, meeting peo- ple and learning new things.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends?
I relax in my garden. I also spend a lot of my time with my grandchildren and other family members. Watching my grandchildren play sport brings me a lot of joy.

What are you really good at?
Crocheting and that is because I love making items for the grandchildren

If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Invisibility, so I could vanish in the blink of an eye, and leave the house without anyone noticing.

What is your pet hate? Seeing children or pets being left in the car.

Tell us about your best holiday ever.
The best holiday ever was the road trip about 20 years ago, to Renmark in South Australia with my daughter. The purpose of the trip was to spend time with a best friend. We also did all the tourist sites on the way. It certainly was a wonderful holiday.

What does Australia Day mean to you?

January 26, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Marlene Huf: I am proud to be Australian and think we live in the best country in the world. Aus- tralia Day is a time to reflect and appreciate what we have.

Wayne Richards: That is a hard question. It is the day we became a nation and everyone has their own opinion as to whether that was for better or worse. I am looking forward to heading to the celebrations at Frog’s Hollow for the first time this Australia Day.

Bloke of the Week

Greg Howell

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? My wife and I have lived in Forbes for 13 years. We think Forbes is a beautiful town and consider ourselves so lucky to have the lake in the centre of town. We also love the friendly community.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I own Forbes Bowen Therapy and Wellness at 19 Bridge Street. I really enjoy helping people get relief from pain and seeing them recover.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I restore old furniture. I received an antique cabinet in pieces that I sanded and put back together, and I also restored my desk and some chairs. I also enjoy catching up with friends and having a coffee.

What are you really good at? People tell me that I am good at gently encouraging people. I help people to understand what they are experiencing is a learning curve which assists the healing process.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? To take away peoples’ pain and past hurts.

What is your pet hate? I cannot abide injustice. I feel passionately about it.

Our Gal – Monica Wren

Monica Wren

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I grew up in Forbes, but left when I was 16. I returned when I was 40; and have loved every minute of living back in Forbes. I love the people, the community and especially being around my family and my mother again. It’s a wonderful place to live.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work for Neighbourhood Central. I organise Community Transport and Social Support for my clients. I love coming to work, meeting people and helping them manage their needs.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? I am the least stressed I’ve ever been – so I don’t need to unwind! But if there is one place that I am truly peaceful, that would be working in my garden with the dogs at my side.

What are you really good at? Painting in a straight line! At the moment I am painting our house so I’ve become really good at cutting in.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Not sure – maybe the power to help people; but that’s not a super power – we all have that ability.

What is your pet hate? People being rude or nasty.

Tell us about your best holiday ever: Cruising with my husband and two boys to the Pacific Islands. It was our last family holiday before the boys moved out of home. Lots of great memories but I now look forward to future holidays with my wonderful husband as we plan to travel around Australia together.

Question of the Week?

January 19, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

What is your favourite Elvis song and why?

Deb Churchill: ‘In the Ghetto’ because although it is a sad story it has a lot of meaning.

Cath Wilton: ‘Too much’, as it has great lyrics and it makes me feel good. I hadn’t heard it before this week.

Todd Callaghan: ‘Viva Las Vegas’ because it makes me want to go to Las Vegas and be the next Elvis!

Our Bloke – Joe Bernardi

January 12, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Joseph (Joe) Bernardi

How long have you lived in or around Forbes? My whole life which is 36 years. I was born here and chose to work for the family business which is based here in Forbes.

Where do you work? Bernardi’s Supermarkets and Discount Dave’s

What do you enjoy most about your work? I particularly love working in the retail industry as it is so dynamic and the market is always changing. It certainly makes things challenging but I guess that is part of the appeal. I also really enjoy the food retailing as you get the opportunity to be creative especially with seasonal fresh food.

Who would you most like to have dinner with? Sam Walton who the was founder of Walmart in the U.S. but has now passed away. He was probably the world’s most ultimate retailer and he started from scratch. In the world of retail, he is the pinnacle in my view

Where would you like to go on your dream holiday? The U.S. probably New York – never been but I’ve heard its awesome. When you get a huge population (New York City has 8.5million people living in it) in a limited geographical area it creates food and retail experiences that are not possible to execute without that population so I’d probably spend a lot of time looking at that – along with some cultural stuff to keep my wife happy!
