Community’s Compassion Keeps Garland Family Going

December 8, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

ava-garland

Last month the Garland family spent a day at Forbes McDonalds for the national McHappy Day – the biggest annual fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House. It was a rare moment of togetherness for the family of seven, who had been wrenched apart six months earlier when their youngest daughter Ava was diagnosed with leukemia.

At 1:15pm on 31st May, Kathy had taken the three-year-old to the doctor for a checkup. Ava hadn’t been feeling well, and the doctor sent her to Forbes hospital for blood tests, but when the results came back Ava was sent straight to Westmead. By 1am Ava had been booked into the Camperdown ward and started on intensive chemotherapy immediately. It was an unexpected crisis to suddenly face, and the fact that Ava’s four older sisters were at school at the time was an added complication. Fortunately, a close friend looked after the girls overnight, despite having four kids of her own.

Meanwhile, Andrew, Kath and Ava were in Sydney with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Redkite provided them with a tote bag full of useful products, such as toiletries, thermal cups, a thermometer, and a diary. Ava joined the Redkite Bead Program, and is given a bead for every procedure or milestone she has faced.

The family has received support from cancer charities such as Little Wings, Meals from the Heart, and the Ronald McDonald House. “They’re amazing,” Kath said, “but you never think you’ll need them.” It’s been a tough six months for the family, who are now living in four different locations. Kath and Ava are staying at the Ronald McDonald house at Westmead Hospital. Scarlett, 13, is boarded at Red Bend Catholic College. Olivia, 11, Polly, 8, and Willa, 6, have moved to Orange to live with Kath’s sister Annette and her husband Anthony.

Andrew returned home to manage the farm at Wirrinya, but after the flooding in September, he ended up in hospital with Ross River Fever. Kath said the community has been phenomenal. From providing home-cooked meals to get Andrew through harvest, to holding fundraisers, or delivering hampers of necessities, Forbes has rallied around the family. “Ava is going through a hard stage, she is currently on steroids and is scheduled to have 15 days straight chemo around Christmas. After this intensive phase of chemo, Ava will be on maintenance chemo for the next 18 months.” Kathy said. “So many people have sent me messages, letters and gifts, which just makes me feel strong and loved and able to face the hard days being away from home and the rest of the family.”

This swell of support looks set to build in 2017. Family friend Adrian Matthews is organising ‘Opera for Ava’ to be held at Red Bend College in April 2017. The concert will feature Dominica Matthews, a principal soloist for Opera Australia. Even Scarlett is doing her bit, and has so far raised more than $5,000 for the 2017 World’s Greatest Shave after pledging to shave her luscious locks for her sister. Year 12 Graduation Dinner Proud Moment For Students And Parents

December 8, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Year 12 graduates of the Forbes High School dazzled everyone in their sequined satin gowns and high heels, suits and ties at the Graduation Dinner on Saturday, 19th November. Parents and teachers were bursting with pride as the graduates were presented through the archway in the upper reception room of the Forbes Inn. In an extremely pleasant atmosphere, speeches throughout the evening were delivered by the Principal, Charles Dwyer, the Year 12 Advisor, Jane Hill and the Master of Ceremonies and Assistant Year 12 Advisor Joseph Doyle. They all reflected on
various highlights of the students’ time at school.

The Captain’s speech, given by Emily Godden, was full of wisdom and words of thanks to everyone. She also commemorated the loss of her fellow Captain, Oliver Carlisle, earlier in the year. This was followed by the cutting of the cake, which turned out to be a very delicious chocolate mud cake and was enjoyed with tea and coffee for dessert.

As the evening drew to a close, the DJ and photo booth were both heavily patronised by the young and young at heart. The night proved to be a huge success and several attendees were still dancing when the event came to an end. A huge thank you to all the graduates who attended and their families for the support they have shown to the school and each other at this event. Special thanks must also go to the organising committee of Anita Morrison (FHS Bursar), Jane Hill (Year Advisor), Emily Bass (English/Language Teacher) and Joseph Doyle (Assistant Year Advisor and Maths Teacher), the cake artist Shirley Myers and the staff of the Forbes Inn lead by Beck Kennedy.

Become A Holiday Hero

December 8, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Set your imagination free these school holidays with the annual Summer Reading Club’s Heroes and Villains theme.
The program kicked off on 1st December at the Forbes Library and online. Created for children and young people aged 6 to 17, the Summer Reading Club is a free national program to instill a love of libraries and reading. This year’s Heroes and Villains theme allows participants to explore the conventions associated with super and everyday heroes — and their villainous counterparts — through a range of exciting interactive reading activities and games.

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch said it was important to keep young minds switched on over the summer holiday period. “Stories have the power to help children develop ideas and imagine what might be possible – exactly what we want for our entrepreneurs of tomorrow,” she said. More than 48,000 children registered with the Summer Reading Club last year, reading around 333,000 in the summer.

To join the Club, register online at summerreadingclub.org.au or into the Forbes Library. They have some stickers, tattoos and bookmarks to give away too. The Summer Reading Club will run until 31st January 2017.

H E Silos Is NSW 2016 Business Of The Year

December 1, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

img_8818

The Forbes family business of H E Silos was named the 2016 Business of the Year by the state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber. There were more than 150 finalists competing for the top award. CEO Steven Morrison was also called up as winner of the Excellence in Innovation category at a black tie gala dinner attended by more than 1,000 guests in Sydney at the end of last week.

“It is just amazing, we are still in shock,” said Steven and his daughter Stevie Morrison earlier this week. They were still on a high after attending a function of the CEO Club at the Sydney Opera House on Monday night. “I have never had such an experience to meet so many CEO’s who allhave a passion for running an excellent business,” said Stevie.

H E Silos has been getting a lot of media exposure, “which is great for Forbes after all the negative media after the floods”, said Stevie. But she felt the biggest compliment came from the judge Joe Spencer. “She said our entry was very well presented. After reading it she completely understood the product and felt she was part of the business.”

The prestigious award recognises overall business excellence in the areas of growth, innovation, export, sustainability, employment practices and ethics. NSW Business Chamber Chief Executive Officer Stephen Cartwright said he was delighted a regionally based business received the top accolade. “Regional NSW is home to so many wonderful businesses with incredible stories and it was fitting that, as we celebrated the 190th anniversary of the NSW Business Chamber, H E Silos was announced as the winner,” the CEO said.

Steven’s parents commenced operations in 1969 as Hillston Engineering, located in Hillston NSW. It was originally an engineering company, but evolved into the agricultural industry and in 1972 started the construction of grain silos. In 1984 the company moved to Forbes. Today they are not only passionate about grain storage, but to ensure food security in Australia and the world. They have developed the Thermal Insect Control System (TICS) to address an efficient and effective way of grain storage by fumigating silos from the ground level. This innovative approach reduces safety risks as well as losses due to insect infestation, contamination and degradation.

According to Steven, Australia is the world leader in grain storage techniques. “There is a lot we can show the world to ensure food security for the future.” H E Silos mainly focus their business on the east coast of Australia, but have been dealing with international clients in New Zealand, Fiji, Japan and New Caledonia. “There is plenty more to come,” said Steven looking to the future. They dedicated their success to the team of 43 full time employees.

“This award is a result of the hard work, dedication, commitment and loyalty of our team.”

We Will Stand Up, Speak Out And Act

December 1, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The shocking statistics of domestic violence is a national emergency. This was the message of Nova Peris, the first Aboriginal Olympic gold medalist and former politician, at the fourth annual White Ribbon Day March last Friday.
Nova highlighted the shocking statistic that 90% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women were victims of domestic violence, but said it was important to remember that not all men were guilty.

Another high profile speaker Peter Gibbs, who established Indigenous Police Recruiting Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) and a former Parkes Spacemen player, drew on sporting analogies for his message. “As a Spaceman we had many battles with the Forbes Magpies on the field, but off the field we always had respect for each other.” Peter said just as a sports team work hard to reach the number one spot, the Forbes community needed to work as a team to get out of the top 10 worst spot for domestic violence in NSW. Ethan Markwort, a Forbes High student who participated in a program called Love Bites, said many sporting role models did not set a good example as they would always blame alcohol and drugs for committing acts of violence. “This is not right.”

Todd Skinner of Northparkes Mines announced the mine had become the first White Ribbon accredited mine in Australia. “More than 80% of our workforce are men and the company felt it was important to train employees to enable them to help prevent and respond to violence against women.” The more than 200 people who took part in the White Ribbon March pledged an oath: I will stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women. Charles Dwyer, White Ribbon Ambassador, said: “Today we become the drivers of change through our collective efforts to raise community awareness.”

Six Forbes High students returned from Sydney on a high after Saturday night’s final performance of Schools Spectacular ever that now holds the Guinness World Records title for Largest Amateur Variety Act. The Schools Spectacular cast, officially counted as 5322 for the Guinness World Records title, included a 2,700-strong choir; 2,300 dancers; an 80-piece symphony orchestra; a world-class stage band; and more than 40 featured artists. The show lived up to its theme: Dream Big.

At times the performers flooded the arena stage with vibrant intensity while in other intimate scenes performers captured the huge stadium audience with their mesmerising talent. From classical extravaganzas blending the symphony orchestra and choir to explosions of pulsating rock and pop, the Schools Spectacular colourfully unfolded
the broad spectrum of music and dance. Schools Spectacular Executive Producer Jane Simmons said everyone should be proud to share in the triumph of the 2016 show. “Schools Spectacular 2016 was amazing,” she said.

“Every single performer, the incredible teachers and staff who brought it all together at the arena and at school, the students’ parents and all who contributed deserve huge applause for the incredible efforts.”
