What Is Your Plan B This Silly Season?

December 13, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Bec Kennedy, Jolene Jones and Taylah Jones want you to consider your Plan B.

Local pubs, clubs and bottle shops have thrown their support behind the NSW Centre For Safety’s “Plan B” campaign. Fifty-seven pubs, clubs and bottle shops throughout Forbes, Parkes and the Lachlan Shire are promoting this campaign which reminds patrons to consider alternative options to driving home after drinking.

The state-wide initiative aims at reducing causalities of drink driving, one of the leading causes of death and injury on NSW roads. Because of the lack of access to public transport and private taxi services, people in rural and remote areas are at a far greater risk of death and injury due to drink driving.

Participating venues and businesses invite patrons to put forward their plan B for getting home after a night out, doing so will enter patrons into a competition to win a swag valued at $250. Local radio station ROK-FM have also thrown their support behind the campaign by encouraging listeners to call in with their Plan B for getting home safely.

The competition winners will be announced on New Year’s Eve. The prize it- self reinforces the Plan B campaign to raise awareness and to make people consider other options to driving. Alternatives can be walking home, having a designated driver or throwing a swag out on a mate’s floor.

The promotion coincides with enhanced Police enforcement, reminding drivers that RBT means you need a Plan B, especially following the introduction of tougher drink driving penalties earlier this year. Since May 2019, drivers who commit a low range drink driving offence for the first time will have their licence suspended immediately, effective for three months. This will be coupled with a fine of $572. To avoid these penalties, please consider your Plan B.

For further information please contact Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, on (02) 6861 2364.

Local Talent Astounds At Christmas Tree Festival

December 13, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Susan Stewart, Sue-anne Nixon and Philip Gilderdale of Forbes Rotary Ipomea were delighted by the marvelous entries in their Christmas Tree Festival over the weekend.

The delightfully diverse range of talent, creativity and skill of the Forbes community was on full display over the weekend at the Rotary Ipomea Christmas Tree Festival. This year marked the ninth year that the festival has been staged at the Forbes Town Hall. Entries from various community groups as well as individuals ranged from the fun and spontaneous to the meticulously planned and intricately detailed. Such variety amongst so many entries meant many voters were hard pressed to choose one favourite, with many voting several times for different entries.

Jemalong Retirement Village took first place in the popular vote with their “12 Days Of Christmas” tree which amazed voters by the sheer size of the tree. The intricate detail and thorough consideration of the design, partnered with brilliant execution, made this entry a real stand out piece.

Uniting Church Nativity took out the second-place popular vote and Rotary Ipomoea members gave prizes to Eugowra Public School for their entry, made entirely of recycled materials. The Forbes District Lions Club also gained an Ipomoea prize for their “Christmas Wish Tree”, an amazing dry stump decorated with messages of hope.

It is apparent that as the festival matures, so does the scope of creative genius, skill and consideration in each entry. However, it is the enthusiastic involvement of the Forbes community, both festival entrants and visitors, that exemplifies the magnanimous Christmas spirit which makes this annual festival so very special.

It is often said by visitors to Forbes that the wonderful community is so fortunate to host numerous community events, festivals, celebrations, concerts and more each year. So many that it can be difficult to find the time to see it all.

One event that Forbes Shire Council as well as the Forbes community has become more and more involved with over the years is the Parkes Elvis Festival. With the festival highlights spilling into Forbes it is important that Forbes residents continue to support events and festivals hosted by our neighbours, at this time more than ever before, with drought relief in mind.

Wednesday, 8th January next year will mark Elvis’s 85th Birthday and everyone is invited to celebrate the day in Cooke Park, by the Elvis statue at 10am. This celebration is proudly staged and supported by Elvis Revival Inc., the Parkes Elvis Festival founding committee and a small group of volunteers.

Maternity Services To Continue In Forbes

December 6, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Pregnant women and their families in the Lachlan Health Service area are being reminded of some changes to maternity services at Parkes and Forbes Hospitals.

While a new maternity service model is being developed, babies from Parkes, Forbes and surrounding communities will be born at Forbes Hospital where midwifery, obstetric and anaesthetic services are available around the clock. Lachlan Health Service Manager, Liz Mitchell, said work on the new Lachlan Maternity Service was progressing and the community would receive regular updates. “We will be working hard to further develop our Midwifery group practice ‘Know your Midwife’ services in 2020, and in the interim we want women and families to have accurate information about how to access the maternity services they need,” said Liz.

Birthing is not currently available at Parkes Hospital. However, procedures are in place to respond to emergencies. Parkes Hospital continues to provide women with pre and post-natal care and fortnightly clinics. In the future, women will be able to choose to have their babies in Parkes Hospital if the pregnancy and birth are assessed to be low risk. If an induction of labour or a caesarean section is required, then this would occur in Forbes.

During each pregnancy, an assessment is made to identify the safest location for birth, taking into consideration the wellbeing of both mother and baby. In some cases, where a higher-level care is needed, this may be Orange Hospital or, on occasion, Nepean Hospital. Anyone with questions about how to access maternity services in Parkes or Forbes is encouraged to contact their local health services: Parkes Hospital 6861 2400; Forbes Hospital 6850 7100.

Rotary Club of Forbes President Grahame Uphill, guest speaker Selina Win Pe and Rotary member John Zannes.

Finding Peace in Giving; Amendment and Update: It was the Rotary Club of Forbes, not the Forbes Lions Club who organised and hosted the wonderful guest Selina Win Pe last week as initially reported on in last weeks “Finding Peace In Giving” Snippet. The Forbes Phoenix deeply regrets this mistake that was made and wishes to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the Rotary Club of Forbes and the fantastic work they do for the Forbes community. Special thanks to Forbes Rotary member John Zannes for his work in getting Selina to Forbes. Selina will be returning to Forbes next Tuesday, 10th December with a new Renault 2 tonne van which has been donated for her Farmer Support program. Fun In The Sun At The Forbes Pool Party

December 6, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Tony Marsh, Joshua Cowling and Nathen Ellis visited from Parkes for The International Day of People with a Disability pool party in Forbes on Tuesday.

The Forbes Shire Council hosted their second annual pool party to celebrate the International Day of People with a Disability (IDPwD). Swimming, music and dance, yoga, painting and many more activities were on offer for party guests on Tuesday at Forbes Olympic Swimming Pool.

The party provided a chance for care providers to mingle, network and share ideas with each other in a way that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

The party guests with a disability were also able to meet and socialise with a diverse range of people whom they wouldn’t always have access to. While the event was one of joy and inclusivity there was also a very practical side of it with the networking opportunities.

Carers and family joined their family, friends and clients with a disability in and around the pool for games, activities and food, all provided by Forbes Shire Council and friends of Council.

Forbes Deputy Mayor Jenny Webb attended and spoke about the importance of showing Forbes disabled residents that “they feel very special in our community while raising awareness within the community on how special they are to us.”

The event aims to break down barriers within the community by acknowledging differences between people and appreciating each person’s unique value in Forbes.

The party served as a wonderful example of how the Council, residents and care agencies value, include and appreciate the residents of Forbes and surrounding areas who live with a disability.

Dancing For Rain, Unity And Healing

December 6, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

On Sunday at noon the ground shook under the feet of thousands of Indigenous people who united in dance for rain and healing, Australia-wide. In Forbes a crowd of approximately 50 people gathered at the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre by Lake Forbes to support the dance and ceremony. Wiradjuri man Yarangirri Holmes was there to lead local Indigenous children in dance while elder and Director Aileen Allen carried out a private women’s ceremony with local Indigenous women.

Wiradjuri elder Aileen Allen explained how the collective stamping of feet is an ancient and deeply spiritual form of dance. The aim of the dance on Sunday was to “bring back the rains, to please mother Earth and to wake her up by bringing up the dust.” Thankfully mother nature listened, and the skies opened soon after, serving Forbes with 4.8mm of rain overnight.

The First Nations dance was the first coordinated nation-wide dance of its kind. Dance coordinators Gooreng Gooreng and Alwyn Doolan encouraged the live streaming of each ancestral dance online. Alwyn Doolan is known for walking more than 8,000km from Cape York to Canberra with detours through Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales. The purpose of the walk was to carry a message of reconciliation to parliament that he had collected from 50 Indigenous nations.

With such success nation-wide, some have called for the dance to be held annually. Yarangirri Holmes of The River Spirit Cultural Arts supported the call saying, “It would be great to see events like this continue to take place. We had a great turnout with people travelling from as far as Orange and Narromine to be part of the dance and that’s what it is all about. Coming together, connecting and healing.” The Wiradjuri dancers in Forbes joined more than 100 nations who took part in the event on Sunday.

A Greener Future For Bedgerabong

December 6, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Bedgerabong Public School students are passionate about sustainability.

Bedgerabong Public School has secured a grant towards building and sustaining a greener future as a recipient in the latest round of Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants.

The school was selected out of nearly 1,000 applicants in the national program, which launched last year and aims to in- spire students with hands-on environmental projects.

The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program offers grants of up to $1,000 for Australian primary schools and early learn- ing centres across the country. The local grant will mean Bedgerabong Public School is now able to develop their proposed project, the ‘Waterwise Kitchen Garden’ which aims at creating sustainable food production within the school.

Woolworths Store Manager, Noel Reardon said, “We’re extremely proud of what this program has achieved to date and de- lighted that a local school has been recognised in the latest round of grants.”

Landcare Australia CEO, Dr Shane Norrish said, “Getting hands-on with environmental projects at this early stage in their development will help equip students with the ability, knowledge and resources to take meaningful action to protect our shared local and national biodiversity as they grow up.”

“We’re looking forward to seeing the project proposed by Bedgerabong Public School and interested locals can track their success via an interactive map at landcareaustralia.org.au.”

Building on the success of the program to date, Woolworths will be providing grants to an additional 600 schools, which then empowers 100,000 students nationally to make sustainable changes for their future during this second round of the program. Since June 2018, Woolworths has to date already contributed half a million dollars in Junior Landcare grants, funding projects for over 1,155 schools through the sale of ‘Bag for good’ across the country.
