Forbes Parents Make The Call

March 27, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

There was a different feeling in the air on Monday morning for many parents of school-aged children in Forbes. After having received conflicting advice in statements by Prime Minister, Scott Morrison and NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian the night before, many parents decided to keep their children at home on Monday. The number of children whose parents have opted to keep them at home is expected to increase throughout the week. Forbes Public School are offering home learning packs for students to complete at home in the two remaining weeks of school before the Easter school holidays commence.

Mother of four and Forbes resident Julie Blume decided to withdraw her one-year-old son and six-year-old daughter from day-care and school, taking leave from work to manage doing so stating that she has decided to withdraw her children but is continuing school work at home, doing a little bit at a time with plenty of breaks in between. Julie went on to explain, “I work with the elderly and have also stepped away from work to care for my children, with the situation changing daily it gives me some relief knowing that we are doing our part by following the governments advice.” Julie’s thoughts and actions have been mirrored by many other parents of school children in the Forbes Shire and is a trend that can be expected to continue.

Gladys Berejiklian and Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, have both advised that it is a “good idea” for children to stay home. As it stands at the time of printing, schools will remain open for children whose parents work in essential services to keep the community operating.

Dolly Allan shaves Fiona McGonigal.

A Shave To Save: Last week, former Forbes resident, Fiona McGonigal took on the challenge to raise $1000 for The World’s Greatest Shave by shaving her head for the cause. This is the second time Fiona has been so brave and selfless as to do this to raise money for Cancer research. So far this year, Fiona has raised $300.

Nominations Open: Nominations are now open for The Heritage Young Artist Scholarship which is offered by the Forbes Shire Council and the Forbes Art Society to support young artists aged between 15 and 21 years to help fund professional development in their creative field. The scholarship of $1000 is open to young artists living in the Forbes Shire and is open to all art forms including, visual arts, dance, design, writing, music, theatre, screen digital arts, curatorial arts and Aboriginal arts. Application forms are available online at www.forbes.nsw.gov.au

Cancellations, Closures and Postponement: As the week has progressed, and with the Federal Government updating their advice to the public daily, there are more and more events, gatherings and functions being postponed or cancelled. The latest advice given by the government, as of Wednesday, has been to ban non-essential indoor gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor gatherings of more than 500 people. This does not yet include schools, hospitals, airports, aged care homes, jails, courts, Universities, supermarkets or workplaces. The Federal Government has also advised all Australians to not travel overseas, advice that is currently in place indefinitely.

Forbes Retail Reassurance: Forbes supermarkets, Bernardi’s and Woolworths have placed limits of purchase on certain items, the major retailers wish to remind customers that while there are many items currently out-of-stock, both stores are working hard to tackle the present situation. The supply of sold out stock has not changed, what has changed is the rate of buying. A more in-depth reminder that there is enough to go around if customers shop responsibly can be found on page 5.

COVID-19 And The Saleyards: Forbes Livestock Exchange advised that all people entering the Forbes CWLE will need to sign in at the front gate and non-sale visitors may be refused entry. Management wishes to remind visitors to consider whether their attendance is absolutely necessary and to stay at home if unwell.

Food For All, Not Free For All

March 20, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud

With recent scenes of chaos and panic in large cities throughout Australia, Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud has released a statement to ensure Australians that the nation’s food security is amongst the safest in the world. “People shouldn’t panic, we have an abundant supply of top-quality fresh food produced from all parts of the country that ensures that there will be plenty of food on the table,” Minister Littleproud said.

Chairperson of Harris Farm Markets, Catherine Harris, reiterated this in saying “I am very confident that we have a very good supply of fruit, vegetables and groceries in Australia, remembering that 96% of our groceries come from within Australia.” In Forbes over the weekend and throughout the week Woolworths and Bernardi’s saw a consistently busy stream of customers. Considering recent outbursts of anger and abuse aimed at staff, Woolworths Forbes store manager, Noel Reardon wishes to remind customers that Woolworths staff are “here to help,” and that “abuse of staff will not be tolerated.”

On Tuesday, Woolworths began it’s morning by closing its doors from 9am-10am to everyone except for elderly and disabled customers, giving the more vulnerable residents of Forbes a chance to shop in safety with the opportunity to buy much needed items that might have otherwise been sold out. Retailers do not know how long the restrictions on toilet paper and other items such as, rice, tissues and Paracetamol will be in place for.

Confronting scenes of chaos and violence witnessed in recent weeks are not only wholly unnecessary, considering that there is no shortage of food in Australia, but the behaviours witnessed are not in line with the culture of Forbes, a town famous for the friendliness and generosity of its residents. With a population of 25 million, Australia can produce enough food for 75 million, which is why there is no need to panic.

Economic Package To Benefit Agriculture Out West

March 20, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud says agricultural businesses will benefit from the Federal Government’s economic stimulus package. Agriculture, fisheries and forestry will get a boost from several support measures in the package designed to support economic confidence, encourage investment and protect jobs.

$1 billion will be directed to a regional and community fund to support industries including agriculture impacted by coronavirus. “The instant write-off threshold has been increased from $30,000 to $150,000 for businesses with an aggregated annual turnover of less than $500 million. There’s accelerated depreciation deductions to encourage investment for the next 15 months. Businesses with a turnover of less than $500 million will be able to deduct an additional 50% from asset costs in the year they were bought.”

For small businesses, the life blood of the community in regional and rural Australia, there’s a 50% subsidy for apprentices. The incentive also includes a tax-free cash boost of up to $25,000 for eligible businesses that take on a worker between 1 January and 30 June this year.

David continued, “There will be another economic shot in the arm locally with the one-off payment of $750 to pensioners and those on Newstart. Take advantage of these measures to grow your business, to increase production and keep our regional and rural communities strong.”

Jemalong Tickled Green For Saint Patrick’s Day

March 20, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Neil and Jane Gilmore entertained residents at the Jemalong Retirement Village on St. Patrick’s Day.

There was no better place to be on Saint Patrick’s Day than Jemalong Retirement Village (JRV), where residents and staff alike were treated to a set of Irish classics by The Gilmores, the husband and wife duo who sing regularly at JRV, as well as three retirement villages in Parkes. The JRV dining room was vibrantly decorated in all shades of green with the residents and staff dressed to match.

Spirits were high as the audience was treated to an array of the classics as well as modern Irish folk songs including ‘If You’re Irish, Come To The Parlour,’ ‘Whiskey In The Jar’ and ‘Flight Of Earls’ by the very talented Forbes residents, Jane and Neil Gilmore. Jane and Neil are also an integral part of the Seniors Choir and serve as the driving force behind the annual Seniors Week Variety Concert in the Town Hall.

Lifestyle Therapist at JRV, Judy Prior said, “The day was fantastic, we had 90 residents come down, had fantastic entertainment, a BBQ, which all of the residents love, lots of helpers came and the staff pulled together a fantastic celebration followed by bingo and Irish Jokes.”

Judy expressed how important events like this are for residents, especially with the recent excursion cancellations which can result in an overwhelming sense of isolation for residents without the community gatherings hosted at the village. Next week JRV will host a gathering with music and a BBQ for National Epilepsy Day.

You Choose Visits Forbes

March 20, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Red Bend College students Tori McRae, Maddie Hopkins, Elliott Ruhmann and Ella Burke with You Choose founder and presenter Melissa McGuinness.

On Friday, 13th March, Red Bend Catholic College received a visitor with a very important message for the students. In 2012, Melissa and Peter McGuiness lost their 18-year-old son when he drove, speeding, under the influence of alcohol, into a stationary vehicle. The crash killed Jordan and four of his passengers. Melissa and Peter have since turned their loss into a means of preventing such senseless tragedy for others. The You Choose Youth Road safety charity Melissa and George created, travels the country giving road safety presentations to schools and youth organisations, with a mission to facilitate changes in thinking and behaviour among young drivers and passengers.

Melissa personally delivered a 75-minute interactive presentation which shared intimate dynamics of a family that could truly be anyone’s family. From the perspective of a Mum about the life of her son, a teenager who was a much loved, good person. But a teenager whose tragic choices on one night shattered five families; and left a miserable legacy for himself and his loved ones.

The presentation was relatable and immersive for the students. No one was left unaffected by Melissa’s story that taught the students that they each have the ability to save lives and to protect their families and others from the horror of road trauma through the power of choice.

You Choose has been acknowledged by a broad range of educators, police, policy-makers, academics and most importantly parents and teenagers as a unique and highly effective approach to facilitating changed behaviours in young drivers and practically reducing youth road trauma.

As of March 2020, approximately 16,000 students from 65 schools have participated in You Choose and in doing so, have become advocates for changed driving behaviours. This program has been developed and achieved while Melissa works a ‘day-job’ four days per week, and Peter works full-time five days per week.

Timely Economic Stimulus

March 20, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack

Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has welcomed the Australian Government’s $17.6 billion economic stimulus package, saying it will help keep rural and regional businesses open and people in jobs during the coronavirus crisis.

“I’m particularly pleased $1 billion has been budgeted to support regions and communities which have been disproportionately affected by the economic head-winds the coronavirus has created, including those heavily reliant on industries such as tourism, agriculture and education,” Mr McCormack said.

“Tourism, agriculture and education are three important pillars of the Riverina and Central West economy and we need to back them all the way.” Mr McCormack also welcomed the strong emphasis on supporting small and medium businesses, keeping apprentices and trainees in jobs and household stimulus payments which will benefit the wider community.

The package has four parts:
• Supporting business investment.
• Providing cash flow assistance to help small and medium sized business to stay in business and keep their employees in jobs.
• Targeted support for the most severely affected sectors, regions and communities.
• Household stimulus payments which will benefit the wider economy.

The one off payment to pensioners and those on Newstart should come as a huge relief to those who are inevitably feeling the pressure of poverty, pressure that is exacerbated by panic shopping and hoarding pantry items which has significantly reduced the amount of basic staples that socio-economically disadvantaged people often rely on.

The Forbes Dragon Boat Club did a fantastic job in representing Forbes at the Shellharbour Regatta over the weekend. (credit:Forbes Dragon Boat Club Facebook page).

Forbes Dragon Boats on the Coast: Forbes was well represented at the annual Shellharbour Regatta at the weekend by the Forbes Dragon Boat Club. The event, which has grown each year since it began in 1998, is held on Lake Illawarra and participants were able to carry on the regatta tradition of paddling in grey, wet weather on the day. The regatta is attended by community organisations, businesses, council teams, schools and dragon boat clubs who race 200 metre races with boats of 20 people. Forbes Dragon Boat Club had 18 paddlers plus a sweep and drummer. They placed third in four heats and first in their final heat however missed the final by one point.

Schools Gala Day: On Monday more than 400 students from years three to six from Bedgerabong Public, Eugowra Public, Forbes North Public, Forbes Public School and Saint Laurence’s Parish School competed in the 2020 Netball Schools Gala Day. The students made up 39 teams and spent the day playing on the netball courts. A reminder that any member of the public is welcome to the Forbes Netball Association ‘Come and Try Day’ on 28 March from 10am-12pm with a chance to try the game and enjoy a BBQ lunch.

Fantastic Pharmacists: On Friday, 6th March Forbes Pharmacists Sarah Hazell and Michael Flannery from Flannery’s Pharmacy, Life Pharmacy and the Life Pharmacy Group were honoured at the Annual Celebration of Excellence in Pharmacy with Sarah being awarded the NSW Pharmacist of the Year, in Terrigal NSW. Pharmaceutical Society Australia (PSA) Branch President, Professor Peter Carroll presented the Award to Sarah and congratulated her on her continued commitment to providing positive health outcomes for the Forbes Community. Michael was presented with the NSW Lifetime Achievement Award. Peter stated that “Michael is the perfect example of the community Pharmacist and has shown terrific passion and dedication to the Pharmacy profession over many years.”

Fabulous Fete: Last Friday saw a lovely turn out for the Saint Laurence’s Parish School Fete. The evening was a great success with friends and family of the school showing their support in great numbers. With face painting, sweets, crafts, games and activities, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Well done to the fete committee, volunteers and donators who made the fete at wonderful as it was.

Equality And Mimosas By The Lake

Forbes Lions Park was a sea of purple for the International Women’s Day champagne breakfast.

Last Sunday saw record numbers in attendance at the annual International Women’s Day Champagne breakfast organised by Forbes Shire Council. Forbes women arrived bright and early and impeccably dressed for the sell out event at Lions Park, which was beautifully decorated in purple, a colour used on International Women’s Day for its historical association with justice and dignity.

Guests were treated to a diverse line-up of inspiring, resilient and successful women. Guest speakers included business-woman Louise Bernardi, Forbes Preschool Director Amy Shine, trailblazer and boilermaker Natasha Schmalz and mental health advocate and agricultural icon Sally Downie. The list of inspiring speakers would not be complete without Forbes’ very own Mayor Phyliss Miller, whose personal story of strength, resilience and determination is one that proves women should never be underestimated. Deputy Mayor, Jenny Webb was MC and Gracey Denhem-Jones lent her beautiful voice to the day, keeping guests entertained.

Entertainment provided by Gracey Denhem-Jones.

Louise Bernardi, who is involved in several charities aimed at empowering disadvantaged women, spoke about how “empowered women, empower women”, a fervent reminder that while having allies in male dominated workplaces is important, it is the support of other women that inevitably leads to success in gaining equality. Forbes Preschool Director Amy Shine has worked to ensure that Forbes Preschool is a beacon of support, inclusivity and community involvement and national recognition is testimony to this.

While Australia has made leaps and bounds in terms of legal equality since the first wave of feminism, there are still many women who are faced with attitudes of dismissal and failure to acknowledge women in the workplace in male dominated fields. Natasha Schmalz and Sally Downie shared their own experiences in the boilermaker and dairy farming industries that were disappointing, yet unsurprising. Despite this, both ladies were confident in the continued progress of change in attitudes towards women.
