Heart Of Country Unveiled

June 25, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

LATEST INSTALLATION: Heart of Country by Damian Vick is the latest installation in the Sculpture Down the Lachlan (SDL) trail.

He stands as a representation of strength, vulnerability and connection and proudly stands at six (6) metres tall. His bold stance and keen focus cut a potent and deadly impression whilst making the inescapable suggestion that he is searching for something unseen, lost along the way, relegated to the past.

‘Heart of Country’ was officially unveiled last week as part of the Sculpture Down the Lachlan (SDL) trail – located 24 kilometres from Condobolin along the Lachlan Valley Way towards Forbes. The one-tonne Cor-ten Steel sculpture explores the notions of strength, vulnerability and connection.

Melbourne sculptor, Damian Vick said the work is an attempt to acknowledge the injustices endured by the Wiradjuri people, whilst also standing as testament to the collective resilience and determination of all indigenous Australians, and their profound spiritual connection with the land.

“I was extremely conscious that the creation of this work rested on a delicate cultural landscape, and that it must be approached with the gravity and sensitivity it demands”, Damian said.

Damian said the nature of the subject matter and developing the piece in conjunction with the local indigenous community has been a profoundly enriching experience.

“Seeing it in its final location, standing tall, with its earthy finish was an extremely proud moment and gave a sense of finality to a sculpture that I consider the most powerful and important one of my career to date,” Damian added.

Chair of the Forbes Arts Society (FAS) Dr Karen Ritchie said, “We are thrilled to be unveiling the first of the four sculptures to be featured within the Lachlan Shire as part of the Sculpture Down the Lachlan trail expansion.”

“Through this very special installation, it’s hoped that we can achieve a deeper level of understanding, facilitate a proud shared identity, and strengthen the connection between our two Shires.”

Mayoral Notes

June 25, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

This week the General Manager and I have been at the National General Assembly in Canberra. This is such an important event for local government to be a part of with over 800 Mayors and Councillors attending from across the state. All Councils use this conference to engage directly with the Federal Government to develop national policy and to influence the future direction of our councils and communities.

Thank you to all who attended our major event for the year last weekend, Frost and Fire. I have heard nothing but great reports from everyone and I hope to make it next year. It wasn’t without challenges this year with the recent rain and Covid-19 scare, but it was great to see so many people make the effort to see the amazing entertainment on offer and for free!

School Holidays start this weekend and we are excited to have again many fun activities to entertain the children. Make sure you register your children as soon as you can as last holidays the spots filled quickly and some missed out.

Next Tuesday we will be holding our annual Volunteers Morning Tea to thank all of the amazing volunteers and volunteer organisations we have here in Forbes. We thank you for all the tireless hours you put into our community. I hope to see you there!

Till next week. God Bless.
Your Mayor, Phyllis Miller

New Look Lake Forbes On The Agenda

June 25, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

ENSURING FORBES LEGACY: National Party NSW Sam Farraway MLC, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM – Mayor Forbes Shire Council, Cr Chris Roylance – Deputy Mayor Forbes Shire Council

The community of Forbes will share in a total of up to $250 million in NSW Government funding to create a legacy of quality, green and accessible public space to be treasured for generations to come.

NSW Nationals Upper House MP, Sam Farraway today announced $2 million dol-lars for Lake Forbes has been allocated to Forbes Shire Council, as part of the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program.

“This is a great result for the local community,” Mr Farraway said.

The Lake Forbes Activation Program includes the new and upgraded amenities including an outdoor gym area, beaches for launching watercraft, BMX track and a swimming platform.

“To secure full funding for the project, council needs to continue accelerating assessment and determination of local DAs, which will have the additional benefit of bolstering the local construction pipeline through to 2023,” Mr Farraway said.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the funding being delivered to councils was reliant on them meeting agreed targets to speed up local development applications.

“This program is the first of its kind in NSW,” Mr Stokes said.

Forbes Shire Council will be provided with funding for project planning and design and will have until 30 June 2021 to demonstrate they have met DA assessment performance improvements to lock in their full allocation of funding, ahead of construction starting on projects from August this year. $100 Million For Farmers Impacted By Mice

June 18, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

FIGHT AGAINST MICE: The NSW Government has invested heavily in the eradication of mice. Pic courtesy of Stephen Michael Barnett.

NSW Nationals Upper House MP, Sam Farraway, is encouraging primary producers experiencing financial hardship due to the mice plague to apply for rebates for the purchase of the critical mouse plague control chemical zinc phosphide.

Mr Farraway said this is part of the NSW Nationals commitment to supporting primary producers in Central West who have been battling with the devastating wave of mice in regional NSW.

“This new funding will offer primary producers in Central West financial relief by providing a rebate of 50 percent on zinc phosphide purchases, up to $10,000, to help cash flow and confidence to place advance orders on zinc phosphide ahead of spring,” Mr Farraway said.

“Communities in the Central West have done it tough off the back of drought, bush-fires, floods and COVID-19 and the last thing we needed was these vermin terrorizing us in our sleep and destroying crops.

“The NSW Nationals are building a safer and stronger regional NSW and these rebates are part of our commitment to supporting our agriculture sector which gives so much to this state.”

NSW Nationals Leader and Deputy Premier, John Barilaro said the NSW Government was working with manufacturers to shore up supplies of zinc phosphide to ensure the State’s farmers are prepared to stamp out a possible spring surge in the mouse population.

“When the mouse bait and treated grain programs were announced I said there would be more support to come and today I’m pleased to confirm we will extend the program to include primary producer rebates for zinc phosphide,” Mr Barilaro said.

“We will make sure any baits produced with zinc phosphide are earmarked for sale to NSW producers first, and we will continue to work to connect manufacturers with Commonwealth support such as the International Freight Assistance Mechanism.”

Tom’s 45 Years On And Going Strong

June 18, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

BEST IN THE CENTRAL WEST: Forbes Chiropractor Tom Cole has helped everyone from infants through to centurions as well as sports people and every day citizens over his 45 year career.

While most would be out golfing or fishing, local chiropractor Tom Cole is still helping people. From the vulnerable to sports stars, Tom has seen it all and fixed it too.

“I started in October 1976 and spent time where the Commerical Hotel is now as well as the Water Resources Building,” Tom said.

“Since then I have helped everyone from babies to a 101 year old lady,” he said.

“It’s in our family DNA – even my sister is a chiro too!”

Tom watched his brother grow up with polio and swore to himself he would one day be able to help people like him and so after seeing how well his sister was thriving in the field, he decided to take the leap as well.

“I love helping people and that’s why I haven’t retired yet!”

With an industry that is rapidly evolving especially with technology advances, Tom believes it is the thrill of taking people’s pain away as well as helping Forbes locals that drives him.

“I really enjoy it – particularly when it is people I know,” he said.

“Forbes is a wonderful community and I feel privileged to be apart of it,” Tom said.

“And while lots of things have changed, the people, my motivation and passion certainly haven’t,” he said.

For Tom’s wife Donna, the other half of this family run business, the reward has been seeing how happy Tom’s work and their business makes them.

“Tom is an amazing chiropractor and I cannot recommend him enough – even if I am a little bit biased!”

If it’s any consolation Donna – we certainly are as well and hope Tom stays on
longer!

Watch this space for our 50 years of Tom Cole Chiropractic!

From The Editor

June 18, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

The past few weeks have reminded us that we aren’t out of the woods with COVID yet. A rash decision by an infectious Victorian couple during a lockdown (due to the pandemic) that resulted in them potentially infecting people across three states, must rank among the most selfish acts in recent memory. We all want to travel and see loved ones and COVID has emphasized more than ever the importance of family but to jeopardise the safety and well-being of the masses for a holiday is reckless.

This week it was brought to my attention that you now can’t see your own doctor at Forbes Hospital. Not sure how true this is but we welcome any stories or feedback regarding this. Already medical services in regional areas are stretched (try getting a doctor in Parkes) and what is worse is what appears to be bureaucracy gone mad with this latest development. It is hard enough getting a doctor and even harder to get one to address patient concerns without them being beholden to external or internal stakeholders driven by the dollar – all Forbes people want is decent doctors and decent care. Is that not too much to ask?

What is going on with the Forbes Magpies? Once the toast of the comp and the envy of all other teams, Forbes has always punched above its weight. This year the first-grade side have one win and one draw half way through the season. Fire up boys!
