WNSWLHD Aboriginal Vax Rates Among Top In State

November 5, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

BIG VAX UPDATE: Aboriginal people from across the WN-SWLHD have been queueing in record numbers since the Delta variant infected 60% of the indigenous population in the region and accounted for half of all Aboriginal deaths recorded. Photo courtesy of WNSWLHD.

COVID-19 vaccination rates for Aboriginal people in Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) are among the highest in NSW and continuing to climb, according to the latest data from the Australian Immunisation Register.

Among those who identify as Aboriginal in WNSWLHD, data until the end of October shows this demographic ahead by the state average by at least 10 per cent in single and double doses for adults and children 12-15yrs – a remarkable effort after what the region has endured.

Brendon Cutmore, WNSWLHD Executive Director of Aboriginal Health and Well-being, said he is very proud of how communities have responded to the need to get vaccinated, particularly after the latest Delta outbreak.

“Around 11 per cent of our District’s population identify as Aboriginal, yet we made up more than 60 per cent of the COVID-19 cases in this outbreak and sadly around half of the deaths recorded,” Mr Cutmore said.

“With the help of our Aboriginal Health Workers, community leaders and partners such as local Aboriginal Medical Services and Land Councils, our region has managed to bring the Delta outbreak under control and reach even some of our most remote communities with vaccine.”

Frost And Fire Finalists In NSW Tourism Awards

TOURISM AWARD NOMINATION: Forbes flagship event Frost and Fire has been nominated for a prestigious NSW Tourism Award in the very competitive Events and Festivals section. Pic of Yarangirri Holmes courtesy of FSC.

Forbes Shire Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM is excited to announce Frost and Fire – the shires signature Tourism event, is a finalist in the 2021 NSW Tourism Awards.

“We are so pleased to announce Forbes Shire Council is in the running for the Events and Festivals gong at the Tourism Awards,” Mayor Miller said.

“Council started this event back in 2019 in the grips of drought, to give back to the community in the troubled times and build a sense of camaraderie. The event did this in spades with over 2500 people attending the first event. They came from all over the State and even internationally! We had to move online in 2020 due to Covid-19,” Miller said.

“But 2021 saw the event return with glowing success!”

Frost and Fire celebrates the winter solstice each year, and this year it fell on the 19th June. The large-scale event is held at the recently renovated Forbes Aquatic Centre, also known as the “Ski Dam”. Guests celebrate the true Aussie tradition of sitting around a bonfire with friends and family. Council combined this simple tradition with a mix of live entertainment from a wide variety of sources including music from local bands; Gracey Jones and The Fog Pilots and well-known Australian artist, Bob Evans. Along with musical entertainment, the crowds were entertained with theatrical performances such as Walter Whip and the Flames as well as a Wiradjuri cultural performance and the local dance troop.

“Frost and Fire fills a gap in the regional events calendar and is quintessentially Australian. It’s a favourite of locals and visitors alike and we are so proud to be a finalist in these prestigious awards.”

The winners of the NSW Tourism Awards will be announced at a Gala Event on Thursday 3rd February 2022 at Luna Park Sydney.

November 5, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

New Era Set To Shape Forbes Council

November 5, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Local government elections are on as voters head to the polling booths on December 4 after two postponements due to COVID in 19 months. Candidate registrations closed this week with some fresh faces also putting their hand up to take Forbes Shire into the future.

Our current councillors have now served five-and-a-half years, and the next term will be a shortened one understandably. Seven of our eight current councillors have indicated they will put their name forward for another term. Gone are former Vandenberg Hotel owner Cr Grant Clifton, who will step back from local government while Cr Susan Chau resigned at the end of the original four-year term having relocated interstate with her young family.

Mayor Phyllis Miller as well as Deputy Chris Roylance along with Michele Herbert, Steve Karatiana, Graeme Miller, Jeff Nicholson and Jenny Webb have been sensational during a difficult term and rightly should all run again. The current council should be commended for leading Forbes through industrial, residential and commercial growth despite the generational challenges as Forbes continues to punch well above its weight in retail, entertainment, arts and employment opportunities. KHub, Goldridge Estate, KFC, VanFest, Bunnings, as well as numerous initiatives for local business and community groups have certainly made this council as productive and visionary as any in recent memory.

Of the other candidates seeking election Aidan Clarke is having another tilt and has some positive views on youth while Maria Wallis and Dianne Decker are also candidates along with Emma Henderson, who like Clarke, has clear ideas for Forbes families and our future.

With Forbes Shire’s full compliment of councillors sitting at nine, potentially only two places will be filled should the incumbents be returned.

Mayoral Notes

November 5, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Wow, wasn’t Taste on Templar spectacular last weekend! I want to congratulate the Forbes Business Chamber on this wonderful event, I’ve heard nothing but positive comments from everyone. This event space will see many events over the coming years and I can’t wait to share the next installment of improvements in the coming months when pergolas will be installed at all corners of the street.

This week will be our last Council Meeting for this Council term. It has been a long term, that is for sure, but I would like to thank my fellow Councillors’ in achieving as much as we have over the last five and a bit years. We truly have the community’s best interest at heart when we are making decisions in the Chamber.

We have had our challenges during this time; drought, Covid-19 and a record capital program to deliver on. We are all very proud to have the largest residential estate in Forbes’ history on the market and new developments around our beautiful Lake. This coupled with the developments at the Central West Livestock Exchange and our Industrial Estates sees a very bright future for our manufacturing, agriculture and industries in the Shire. We are also very proud to do all of this and not be in the red!

This column will be handed over to our General Manager, Steve Loane, for the next 6-8 weeks while the Local Government elections take place.

Take care and God Bless.

Your Mayor,
Phyllis Miller

35 YEARS: Brett Clarke has been at Aussie Biscuits for 35 years and seen more biscuits than a High Tea Party. He credits his love of the job to the people he works with and his fur babies at home. Well done mate! Pic courtesy of Aussie Biscuits/ Aruma.

Brett’s As Aussie As The Biscuit

Recently, Brett Clarke, one of the workers at Aussie Biscuits, celebrated his 35th year at the not-for-profit, and says the camaraderie is what makes his job so awesome. “The feeling that I get when I walk into work, it always makes me feel good,” he said. “Oh, and all the talking we do is good exercise – works the jaw bones!” Outside of work, Brett’s big loves are his dogs (Suzie, Sparky, The Big Oof, Molly, Wolly, and Peaches) and his pet python George, who’s only given him a ‘love bite’ once! www.aussiebiscuits.com.au

Old Abbies Site Sold

It’s been sitting there since 2003 but now the site of the former abattoir on the northern side of town has been sold, and developers have a big vision for the near half a million-acre property to the delight of Mayor Phyllis Miller. In an online social media post, the Mayor announced the sale and touched on the fact developers had already “put out feelers.”

“They hope to re-purpose the old abattoir site and they’ve got some great ideas meaning this is going to be another amazing development in Forbes.”

Paul Johnston is based in Forbes and involved in the redevelopment of the property with Rob Britt from Brisull Investments who is based in Sydney.

$250 Thank You Vouchers

If you’re Forbes resident with school-aged children in 2021 then the good news is you are due to receive a $250 “thank you” from the State Government as part of the NSW Government’s Economic Recovery Strategy released last week. NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the vouchers are to stimulate economic activity in cities and regions with a strong focus on rebuilding and supporting businesses and communities. Only families who had a school-aged child in 2021 will receive the bonus which will be available in the form of vouchers from Service NSW in March.

$500M For Events And Tourism

October 29, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

REGIONAL FUNDING: NSW Regional Tourism and Events have received a massive $500m injection from the State Government to restart industry in rural NSW after nearly two years of COVID enforced lockdowns. Pic courtesy of FSC and Amazing Forbes.

A $500 million support package to revive the events and tourism industry across NSW will be a game changer that will turbo charge a post COVID economic recovery, according to the state’s peak business organisation, Business NSW. Premier Dominic Perrottet has announced the package, which includes each adult being provided a $50 voucher to spend on accommodation anywhere in the State.

“Business NSW has been telling Government since the start of the pandemic that different industries were being impacted in different ways, but the tourism, hospitality and events sector has been the hardest hit,” said Business NSW Regional Manager – Western NSW, Vicki Seccombe.

“What is particularly pleasing is this is not a Sydney centric package but recognises that all of NSW has a part to play in the economic recovery through regional events and tourism. We recently hosted an online roundtable with the Premier and a number of Western NSW businesses to discuss how best to assist our recovery, so it’s so pleasing to see a number of the suggestions from our members coming to fruition, including the accommodation vouchers and the support for cancelled events,” Ms Seccombe said.
