Vaccination Still Best Defence Against COVID-19

February 4, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Member for Riverina Michael McCormack

It has been a tough few years and all Riverina and Central West residents have been affected in some way.

Whether it be our primary producers recovering from the effects of drought, to floods and storms threatening homes and farmland and, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic, we have all faced significant adversity and, in a show of typical regional Australian community spirit, we have stood tall to be our best selves against these challenges.

Australia can be proud that it is one of the most vaccinated countries when it comes to COVID-19. The fact remains, despite new variants, vaccination remains our best defence against this virus.

We need to continue doing the right things to keep safe our more vulnerable in our community – practising social distancing, wearing masks when appropriate and getting the COVID-19 jab.

Whether you have rolled up your sleeve twice or you have become eligible recently, such as those in the five- to 11-year-old age category, your efforts to continue to protect your community through getting the booster or getting your first jab are to be commended – you are saving lives and protecting livelihoods in your local community. Thank you.

We all want to get back as quickly as we can to the way our lifestyles were before the pandemic – the vaccine is helping us do just that.

You can go to www.health.gov.au to find the nearest available COVID-19 vaccine clinic and to book your vaccination.

Staged Return For Non-Elective Surgery

February 4, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

From Monday 7th February non-urgent elective surgery requiring an overnight stay will return to 75 per cent capacity in private hospitals, and up to 75 percent of pre pandemic activity levels at public hospitals in regional and rural NSW where they are able to do so.

The temporary suspension of non-urgent elective surgery requiring an overnight stay in both public and private hospitals from 10th January was necessary to ensure there was sufficient staffing and hospital bed capacity in NSW to meet the extra demands caused by the Omicron wave of COVID-19.

Minister for Regional Health Bronnie Taylor said people in regional NSW will be pleased to see a resumption in non-urgent elective surgery as we return to a normal operating environment.

“It’s been a challenging time, but our doctors and nurses and support staff have worked tirelessly in our regional hospitals to support people in need of urgent care,” Mrs Taylor said.

The NSW Government provided an extra $80 million as part of the 2021-22 NSW Budget.

The NSW Government has committed more than $4 billion to the NSW health system since the COVID pandemic began in March 2020.

Back To School Safety Reminder

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

FOLLOW TRAFFIC SIGNS: Drivers are asked to be more alert and patient from next week when school returns in the Forbes Shire. Parents, carers and school staff are also reminded to reinforce road and safety rules with children.

The new school year is set to resume for thousands of local students next week and Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan Shire Councils are reminding local drivers and parents about children’s safety around schools.

The Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said that road crashes account for over half of all accidental deaths among children aged 5 – 14 years old.

“Children are vulnerable road users because of their size and their inability to judge speed and distance,” said Ms Suitor.

“Drivers are reminded to slow down, pay extra attention and be patient when school resumes.”

There are 40km/h school speed zones around all schools in NSW. Most school zones are operational between 8am – 9.30am and 2.30pm – 4pm on school days, when the lights are flashing.

Police will be targeting school zones when school returns.

Parents and carers should:

• Always make sure your children wear a seatbelt or use a child restraint when travelling in a car. Child restraint laws require children up to seven years old to be restrained in an approved child restraint. For more information visit www. childcarseats.com.au

• Where possible, drop-off and pick-up your children on the school side of the road.

• Make sure children use the footpath-side door when getting in and out of a car -this is called the ‘safety door’.

• Use a pedestrian crossing where possible and avoid being distracted whilst walking.

• Children aged up to 10 years old should always be supervised when near traffic.

• Children aged up to eight years old should always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road or walking near traffic.

• Make sure your children always wear a helmet when riding a bike.

• If your children catch a bus, always walk with them to the bus stop.

Be Alert, Not Alarmed

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

MOZZIES ABOUT: Forbes Shire Council is asking residents to take care after Ross River Virus was discovered in their flock of sentinel chickens. There is no cure for Ross River Virus and people are asked to remain alert and take precautions.

Residents are being asked to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquitoes in these incredibly wet times the region is experiencing.

“Our team has been spraying our public spaces, including sporting fields, ovals and the lake foreshore, with a targeted insecticide to try and keep numbers at bay,” said Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller.

“Our flock of sentinel chickens and mosquito traps have detected Ross River Virus (RRV) and we would like to alert the community to do what they can to protect themselves when outside over the coming months,” said Miller.

“The only way to prevent being infected with a disease such as Ross River is to avoid being bitten in the first place. There is no vaccine or special treatment to prevent catching the disease and it affects people in different ways.”

Symptoms can last for weeks to months, and include painful or swollen joints, sore muscles, skin rashes, fever, fatigue and headaches.

“If you are concerned about some of these symptoms we encourage you to visit a local GP and they will conduct a blood test to advise you if you have contracted RRV,” said Mayor Miller.

Prevent mosquito bites with the following precautions:

• Reduce activity outdoors during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are more likely to bite;

• Cover up with long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing when outdoors;

• Repel by applying an effective personal repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin evenly to all areas of exposed skin and always follow the label Instructions;

• Use insecticide sprays, vapour dispensing units (indoors) and mosquito coi (outdoors) to clear rooms or repel mosquitoes from an area;

• Screen all household doors and windows;

• Remove potential breeding grounds around your home. These include any water-holding containers including blocked gutters and rainwater tank overflow pipes, and washout birdbaths and ornamental pools weekly.

Mayoral Notes

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Happy New Year to you all. I know we are almost into the second month but as this is my first column for the year I wanted to wish you all the very best for what I hope will be a great year. I look forward to working with my fellow Councillors to bring out the best in this great Shire we live in.

The year has started however with many cases of COVID-19 in our community and as our politicians have stated it is a virus we have to learn to live with. I encourage those who are eligible to get booster shots.

The Shire is in for a busy year in the sense of the projects we have on the board to complete. Goldridge Estate is progressing very well and Stage Two is now on the market. Works continue at the old Lachlan Vintage Village to turn this space into our new Tourist Information Centre and Café.

The Lake Forbes Activation Plan beautification work will also continue this year with the turning of the old Ambulance Centre into a world-class art gallery about to begin very soon.

Our industrial land is set to expand with the development of more sites at Central West Industrial Park. As our industrial site and Landrace is nearly at capacity proving business is growing here in Forbes, and we need to provide the land for it to do so.

Take care and God Bless.

Your Mayor,
Phyllis Miller

Flagship Properties Sold

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Glenorie and Dorset – two highly versatile and complimentary, mixed irrigation farms located in the heart of the Lachlan Valley are officially sold. Johnston Rural Group recently announced the successful sale and settlement of the Jemalong properties.

Comprising a combined total of 495.7* hectares (1,224* acres) of productive farming and grazing country, the sale also included 1,250 MgL of ground and surface water. Located on the western side of the Jemalong Range, the holdings are ideally situated 29 kilometres west of the historic township of Forbes and just 21 km from the Newell Highway. The non-contiguous properties were sold ‘as a whole’ as the result of a successful Expressions of Interest campaign that concluded in late September.

Forbes based rural property specialists Johnston Rural Group handled the sale with licensee in charge Gary Johnston stating that “the properties generated a significant level of interest for the Forbes area with enquiries coming from local operators, graziers from western and southern parts of the state, city-based investors and corporates.”

Whilst the sale price remains confidential, Gary advises the properties were transacted prior to Christmas, and bought by the Le Lievre Family (Yathonga Station) from Louth in North-Western NSW.

RISING SUN: Melbourne based artist Damian Vick has created this outstanding Rising Sun for Club Forbes. It is Vick’s third display in the Forbes Shire with two other works as part of the sculpture trail.

New Sculpture Design At Club Forbes

The Damian Vick steel sculpture of the Rising Sun now takes pride and place on the Templar Street wall of Club Forbes.

The Rising Sun is a dynamic piece that is as versatile as it is dramatic. Having been designed and built in two halves allows it to be used in three distinct ways: hung flat on a wall, used as a divider for a space, or positioned in a corner. This particular screen was donated to the Club Forbes to commemorate the centenary of the first world war.

Vick, a Melbourne-based artist, has three sculptures in Forbes including The Hunter located at the Gum Swamp Bird Hide on the Newell Highway, The Heart of Country located 80km from Forbes on the Condobolin Road and the Rising Sun.

McCormack Delivers Grants To Forbes Community Organisations

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Member for Riverina Michael McCormack

Forbes Toy Library, Forbes Netball Association and the Bedgerabong Pastoral Agricultural and Horticultural Association received a welcome boost before Christmas with Member for Riverina Michael McCormack announcing they will receive grants to support the vital work they do for the community.

“The support is being delivered through the Federal Government’s 2021 Volunteer Grants opportunity,” Mr McCormack said.

The funding program provides community organisations with grants of between $1,000 and $5,000, which can be used to buy small equipment for use by volunteers, reimburse volunteer fuel costs, meet training costs, transport volunteers with a disability or support promotional activities on volunteering activities.

Mr McCormack said 41 organisations in the Riverina and Central West would share in a total of $131,306.

“There are many thousands of volunteers in the Riverina and Central West who improve our community every day by turning up and helping out,” Mr McCormack said.

Forbes Toy Library will receive $1,000, Forbes Netball Association will receive $2,850 and the Bedgerabong Pastoral Agricultural and Horticultural Association will receive $4,200. Mr McCormack said NSW Small Winemakers Incorporated (Forbes) would also receive a $1,500 grant.

“I thank the grant recipients, indeed all volunteer groups, for the wonderful work they do for the community.”

There are more than 8.7 million volunteers around Australia and their economic contribution is estimated at $290 billion a year.

Mr McCormack said the 2021 Volunteer Grants program would deliver a total of $18 million to more than 5,000 organisations nationwide. The Riverina Electorate grants were nominated by Mr McCormack in consultation with a community consultative committee.

Crowds Flock For Australia Day As Laurie Norris Wins COTY

January 28, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

FORBES CELEBRATES: Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM presented RDA’s Laurie Norris with Forbes Citizen Of The Year at an intimate, COVID-safe gala dinner at Forbes Town Hall last Tuesday night. They are pictured with Deputy Mayor and MC Chris Roylance. Norris has been a tireless worker in the Forbes community and was a popular winner from a strong field of nominations. New councillor Aidan Clarke also handed 2022 Forbes High School Captain Benjamin Barnard the Junior Citizen award while John and Christine Gorton picked up the Senior award from Brian Mattiske.

Last Tuesday evening, the Citizen of the Year gala dinner was held at Forbes Town Hall to recognise those who have contributed to the community. With this year’s ambassador, inspirational Paralympic gold medallist Lindy Hou also in attendance, tireless community worker and RDA mentor Laurie Norris took out Forbes Citizen of the Year presented by Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM.

New councillor Brian Mattiske awarded John and Christine Gorton Senior Citizen of the Year while Forbes High School Captain for 2022, Benjamin Barnard, picked up the Junior Citizen award and was congratulated by another new councillor, Aidan Clarke.

MC and Deputy Mayor Chris Roylance also paid special tribute to all nominees.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for their efforts,” said Mr Roylance.

“It is visible through the high quality of nominations we had this year,” he said.

On Wednesday morning, Rotary hosted the customary Australia Day breakfast at Lion’s Park at 7am. Later, most made their way back for more fun in the sun before settling in for the evening’s entertainment which culminated in fireworks.

Mayor Phyllis Miller was very pleased with the turn out after the last few events had been watered down due to COVID.

“It is amazing to see so many people come out and responsibly enjoy themselves on Australia Day,” she said.

“Thank you to everyone and a big congratulations to all our Australia Day award winners!”

BIG NUMBERS: Australia Day went off without a hitch this year despite two years of COVID disruptions with crowds flocking early to Lion’s Park for the Rotary breakfast and enjoying a day on the water by Lake Forbes. The celebrations culminated in a spectacular fireworks display.
