Lions Doing Their Part For Sick Kids

Be it a Tsunami in Indonesia, an Earthquake in Haiti, presenting a mobility system to a disabled child or a Hearing Dog to a hearing-impaired older person – Lions have been supporting communities and causes for decades especially in Forbes and the Central West.

Now childhood cancer research is getting a $1.05 million boost thanks to Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. The latest project is $1.05 million of funding to the Telethon Kids Institute to support the Centre’s vital research aimed at improving survival rates, longevity and quality of life for children with cancer. Over the past 10 years, the Australian Lions Childhood Research Foundation has raised over $10 million for childhood cancer research.

From September 2019 to December 2020 the Lions Clubs of Australia also provided nearly $5,000,000 assistance to farmers in the Central West and Western areas of NSW.

Earlier, in 2016, the Lions Clubs of Australia and International provided flood relief funding right here in Forbes. These funds were administered by the local Forbes and District Lions Club.

So if you need an outlet for your kindness or want to get involved with Lions or this cause you can as Lions support numerous groups and missions.

Rawsthorne Hangs Up Hat For Farm

October 8, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

When Andrew Rawsthorne, a Trundle farmer and former Red Bend student, arrived at Forbes Shire Council as the new Grants Officer six years ago, his role was to help bring council’s vision to life. Now, he is hanging up his hat to dedicate his time to his ever-growing farming business.

“I have been lucky enough to work with some outstanding people – creative people, who I count as lifelong friends,” said Andrew. “I am privileged to have played a small part in the growth of Forbes – a town near and dear to me.”

Rawsthorne and his grants colleagues collaborated on $30million in funding during his tenure – a remarkable feat that has elevated Forbes to one of the most prosperous and idyllic rural communities to live in nationwide.

For Andrew it is all about life on the land and he wouldn’t have it any other way!

Panthers Pip Brave Bunnies In NRL Decider

October 8, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

2021 NRL PREMIERS: Penrith Panthers celebrate their tight 14-12 win over South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium last Sunday. (Pic courtesy of NRL)

It was the grand final no one expected but the finale we all deserved and will be talking about for a very long time after the Penrith Panthers outlasted the South Sydney Rabbitohs 14-12 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane – the first grand final outside of Sydney.

While Forbes Charlie Staines never made the match day 17, the Magpies prospect was cheering from the sidelines and like most, would’ve been beside himself as his teammates looked to take Penrith’s third title in 54 years. Ironically, it was also 30 years to the day that another well-known Central West prospect, Gooloogong boy, Royce Simmons, won Panthers’ inaugural title in 1991 over a star-studded Canberra Raiders side. Simmons has been credited by many all week with providing the incentive to help the young Penrith side bounce back from their 2020 grand final defeat to Melbourne.

After Dubbo CYMS Matt Burton’s open-ing four pointer was cancelled out by Cody Walker, both teams were locked in a war of attrition until Walker through a speculator that Stephen Crichton latched onto to give Panthers a valuable lead with time expiring. An Alex Johnston try gave Souths hope but departing star Adam Reynolds kick shaved the uprights.

As both teams scrambled to win the game in the closing stages, inevitably it was the championship defence of Penrith that proved the difference. For two years they have only conceded 12 points or less a game and on Sunday they also dominated territory and possession against a plucky Souths side. It was enough to give Penrith a narrow win and cement the NRL’s youngest side as the best in 2021.

Wet Underfoot But Tidy Scores

CHOMPING AT THE BIT: Despite the inclement weather, Bede Tooth and Dave Bernardi were keen as mustard for golf in the rain.

Saturday’s Monthly Medal comp, sponsored by Forbes Concrete, was played by a vibrant 93 players despite the wet ground conditions and occasional showers.

A-Grade was won by Caleb Hanrahan (71 nett) on a count back from runner-up Terry Griffiths. There was only one stroke the difference on the back-9.

B-Grade went to Fons Melisi with 71 nett, in a consistent performance. Runner-up was Jake Shaw with his 72 nett, on a count back from two others.

The C-Grade was also tight with a count back needed to decide the winner Allan Rees, from runner-up Trevor Toole, who both finished on 72 nett.

The ball sweep went to 76 nett on a count back, so please check in the Pro Shop. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Caleb Hanrahan, 18th – Will Lovatt.

The 3rd hole Super Pin went to Bruce Chandler with a shot of 1.88 metre proximity, well inside the previous names on the card. There were no visitors.

Being a long weekend there were Stable-ford Medleys on both Sunday and Monday.

In the Sunday event the winner was Jess Hamilton with 40 points, a new player who shows great promise for a much lower handicap. Runner-up on count back was Henry Nash with 39 points, getting the nod from Jarrod Hall (Trundle).

The ball sweep went to – 39: J Hall (Trundle); 38: J Hemming; 37: J Coulthurst. There were no NTP’s recorded.

On Monday, in more pleasant ground conditions, the winner was Todd Callaghan who amassed 37 points. Runner-up was Stephen Uphill with 33 points, and a count back from Peter Dawson.

There was no ball sweep, but the NTP’s went to – 9th: M Spice; 18th: Brett Thomas.

On Saturday October 9, the Club Championships commence. Play will be over four rounds on 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th October.

So hope to see you there.

Regional Schools Welcome Back Students For Term 4

October 8, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

More than 140,000 students across NSW return to face-to-face learning on Tuesday, October 5, for the start of Term 4 including children in Forbes.

With COVID-19 restrictions eased across many parts of rural and regional NSW, 721 schools – almost a third of the State’s public schools – welcomed all students back on site. Students returned to COVID-safe settings that included QR code checkins, no visitors, restricted activities, increased hygiene practices and mask wearing.

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said she understood how important it was to have children back in classrooms.

“Thousands of excited students returned to the classroom in the regions this week and will soon be followed by students in other parts of the state with either a staged return from 18 October, or via the easing of local restrictions,” Ms Mitchell said.

“After a disrupted Term 3, it is more important than ever that students receive the academic, social and wellbeing benefits of being in the classroom. Despite this excitement, it is important that parents and students follow their school’s guidelines for safe operations, and practice physical distancing at school pick-ups and drop-offs.”

Several measures are in place for a return to school, including increased cleaning activities and additional hygiene and safety practices.

Parents are encouraged to look at their school website, Facebook page or newsletters to learn about new procedures that have been introduced, such as changes to parents’ access to the school grounds, drop off and pick up points as well as new safety and hygiene rules.

Forbes Riverside Community Gardens A Local Icon

October 8, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

COMMUNITY GARDENS: Pip Thompson (front) with parents Brett Thompson and Lisa Glasson at the Forbes Riverside Community Gardens spending time at their plot.

Over a decade ago some keen local gardeners, green thumbs and growers acquired a space once run by the Forestry Commission and so became the community gardens we see today.

For Heather Moore, who joined later, the gardens and the volunteers provide an outlet and a great chance to socialise and share a common passion – gardening. Whether it be spring flowers, veggies or fruit, there are a number of gardens run by volunteers with a plethora of produce.

“We have all types of plants and fruit and veg from she-oaks, tomatoes and beetroots to lemons and much more,” said Heather.

“Members can also adopt a plot and foster and nurture their own garden bed like the Thompson-Glasson family here today,” Heather said. “It is also a great way to get outside and get the family into gardening and growing their own food.”

For Brett Thompson, the gardens are a great escape for daughter Pip and partner Lisa. “It is a great way to do something together and get out and about.”

Membership is $10 and the gardens are open Saturday’s. AGM 16th October at 10am.

Those looking to get vaccinated in Forbes will be able to do so from today when Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) are returning with the Australian Defence Force at Forbes Town Hall from today October 8 and tomorrow October 9.

No bookings are required for those getting their first dose of a vaccine as Forbes sits on over 90% first dose.

Two in every three in Forbes have now also had both doses as the state plans to reopen from Monday for those who are double-vaxxed.

The Pfizer vaccine will also be available for children aged 12 and over and must be accompanied by an adult.

Those attending will need to bring a form of identification and ideally, a Medicare card.

Second dose clinics will be scheduled and information released soon on future dates. Second doses of AstraZeneca will be given by appointment/invitation only at this clinic.

People who received their first doses at the previous Forbes ADF walk-in clinic will be contacted by text or telephone to confirm the location of the clinic and the date and time to attend for their second dose appointment.

If people are unable to attend they will need to seek their second dose from an alternative provider.

There are numerous locations in Forbes including the Forbes Medical Centre and both pharmacies.
