Aussie Biscuits Team Among Many To Celebrate IDPwD

December 10, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Last Friday December 3rd was International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) and while it wasn’t held at the Forbes Olympic Pool like previous years, many providers and organisations across the region chose to acknowledge the day in a variety of ways.

“At Aussie Biscuits today and in fact every day, we celebrate and appreciate our amazing Aussie Biscuits team,” a statement from the Aussie Biscuits Facebook page read.

In 1976 a delightfully small and very Aussie biscuit business began in regional NSW with a single mission: to create employment for people with a disability. The same opportunity most of us don’t even think twice about.

“From a single Jam Drop, lovingly made with a recipe donated by Forbes local Noelene Hudson, Aussie Biscuits grew and grew. In 1976 their employees hand-made 600 Jam Drops a day. By 2018 they had outgrown their original factory and moved into a brand-new location, creating more jobs, and even more delicious bikkies!”

Previously known as House with No Steps and The Tipping Foundation – two great organisations, with over 100 years of combined experience, both came together in 2018 to form Aruma and run Aussie Biscuits.

“Today Aussie Biscuits produce thousands of biscuits a day, in six different flavours – still made with love – for the retail market, hospitality industry and fundraising groups.”

Aussie Biscuits employ more than 30 people with a disability and some of them have been making yummy bikkies for over 40 years! “Our biscuits have changed lives. We’re living proof of the difference a humble biscuit can make. You are simply awesome Team Aussie! Happy IDPwD!”

Drane Gets Podium Finish As FASC Wrap For 2021

December 10, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

PODIUM FINISH: Forbes Autosports Club junior and Oceania Cup team member Sam Drane has finished second on a recent foray into superbikes having forged his early career on dirt bikes. The young charger from all accounts has a bright future in the sport. Pic courtesy of Sam Drane Racing.

In just his second ever race on this type of bike, Forbes youngster Sam Drane has pulled off a remarkable second place in the last round of the ASBK – Australian Superbikes.

Drane, who received a wild card entry, was in second when the race was halted with a lap to go and the young rider couldn’t hide his excitement in an online interview trackside.

“Mum and dad said I could ride the bike and I did and I came second,” Sam said. “It was great!”

Drane, is also an official team member next year of the Oceania Junior Cup and with form like this, will no doubt feature

prominently and has a big future in the sport.

The Forbes Autosports Club meanwhile has wrapped for the season with their AGM and Christmas party. The incoming committee is as follows:

President: Dave Hodgetts
Vice President DT: Joel Duggen
Vice President MX: Jake Redfern & Jono Colitts
Secretary: Sonia Dukes
Treasurer: Haley Hope-Hodgetts
Publicity Officer: Stevie Jackson
Canteen Manager: Lara Besgrove
The FASC would like to say a big thank you to all those who took up positions and bring on 2022!

Farewell Wilma

December 10, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

SAD PASSING: Wilma Hepburn, a mainstay at Forbes Red Cross Branch for over 30 years, passed away recently. Photo submitted.

Mrs Wilma Hepburn left an indelible imprint on the Forbes community with her long and outstanding humanitarian commitment to the Australian Red Cross.

Wilma first joined as a volunteer with Emergency Services in 1989, later joining as a member of the Forbes Branch, then Club in 1999. During this period Mrs Hepburn held executive roles of Secretary, Vice President and President of Forbes Branch, then Liaison Officer since 2008 when the Branch became a Club. She was also a Life Member.

On World Red Cross Day in May 2010, Mrs Hepburn’s dedication was recognised with a NSW Service Award. She received a National Outstanding Service Award in 2014, followed by a Special Mention Certificate for the John Fries Award in 2019.

In October 2020 Mrs Hepburn received her 30 Year Service Bar.

Mrs Hepburn instigated and gladly supported Branch activities and was a dedicated fundraiser for the community. She connected with the local community and other organisations working together to raise the profile of the Red Cross.

She also led the Emergency Services team and supported the community through all flood events during her leadership. Wilma Hepburn will be sadly missed by friends, and the broader community alike for her significant contributions to helping those in need.

PM, Premier Thank SES

December 10, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

THANK YOU: Local Forbes Unit SES volunteer Monica Steffan is congratulated by PM Scott Morrison as Roc Walshaw, Forbes Unit SES Commander watches on.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet and Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack, surreptitiously dropped into Forbes last Sunday afternoon for a barbecue lunch and to thank NSW and Lachlan SES, RFS and other volunteers for their recent efforts during the floods.

The trio then took flight and visited Bedgerabong farmer Scott Darcy, before jettisoning back to the Forbes SES headquarters to formally thank everyone. Led by the Prime Minister, all three served food to the swell of volunteers, wishing each the best for the festive season and new year.

With media in tow, the group posed for photos with volunteers before also getting a run down by Forbes SES Commander Roc Walshaw. The Forbes LGA has so far

involved 50,000 sandbags, 751 jobs, 25 houses impacted to various degrees and 11 flood rescues.

While no announcements were made about flood mitigation, water use and the raising of the Wyangala Dam wall, the Prime Minister did take the opportunity to promote the Therapeutic Drugs Administrations (TPA) approval of Pfizer vaccinations for children between the ages of five and eleven being rolled out in 2022.

Having also stopped in at the Bathurst 1000, Mr Morrison was also asked whether he was already in election mode as he tries to climb back in the polls.

“I’m focused solely on the job at hand,” Mr Morrison said.

The next election must be held within 6 months before May 21, 2022.

December 10, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Cabonne Shire will soon benefit from infrastructure improvements and programs that help the community thrive, thanks to the NSW Government’s $75 million Resources for Regions Round Eight.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier Sam Farraway today announced $2,621,696 for the Activation of Cabonne’s Town and Villages. “This project focuses on town activation works for Cabonne’s two population centres Molong and Canowindra as well as the replacement of town and village entrance signage throughout the shire”

“These upgrades will leverage off each town and village’s unique characteristics, to improve wayfinding whilst also providing residents and visitors with access to improved community infrastructure.”

It is envisioned that these upgrades will ensure that the offerings of the region continue to appeal to locals and that Cabonne leaves a positive, memorable impression on visitors to the LGA, promoting the growth and prosperity of Cabonne and encouraging returned visitation,” Mr Farraway said.

Forbes North Needs You!

December 10, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Volunteers are needed to teach ethics at Forbes North Public School every Wednesday during school term. Tricia Bolton (Greenhill), long-time coordinator of Primary Ethics classes at the school, is moving interstate, leaving a large hole to fill for the popular classes that see over one third of school students take part.

Trish joined as coordinator seven years ago in 2014 and shortly after Desiree (De) Barter started the ethics program, which runs as an alternative to scripture or ‘supervised care’.

“Tricia has always supported the volunteer teachers in their role, believing strongly in the goals of ethics lessons – for children to learn how to respectfully discuss everyday ethical issues, listening closely to each other, forming their own opinions, sometimes disagreeing but without putdowns. Tricia’s wisdom in this role will be sadly missed,” De said.

Primary Ethics volunteers come from all backgrounds – parents, grandparents, friends and members of the local community.

“You don’t have to have any previous teaching experience. There is free online training provided and lots of ongoing support.”

The ethics curriculum is Department of Education-approved. The classes are for children of all faiths and none, designed to get children thinking deeply and communicating respectfully.

The new Ethics Coordinator, Mary Hinchcliffe, moved to Forbes 5 years ago when she retired. Since joining the team of volunteer teachers, Mary says she is constantly inspired by the children’s enthusiasm.

“Anyone who has an hour a week to spare can apply to volunteer,” Mary said. “You will get a lot out of it and contribute valuable skills for the children’s future”.
