Sandbags To Be Placed On Rankin Street

April 21, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Rankin Street Xing

Lines will be marked and sandbags will be placed around the crossing at the corner of Templar and Rankin Streets next week as part of the Forbes Shire Council’s plan to upgrade the pedestrian crossing there. Council’s plan will involve bringing the kerbs on either side of the crossing further out into the street.

Council may also decide to raise the crossing in order to slow traffic down driving over it, but this is yet to be confirmed. Under the plan, Council also hopes to add three extra car parking spaces near the crossing by bringing the red ‘no parking’ sign further up the street. A State Government grant will fund the project, which has been quoted at $21,850, and must be spent before the end of the current financial year.

However the plan came as a surprise to local businesses on Rankin Street, which received a letter just two days prior to Council initially wanting to start work on the project, which was Monday this week. Cahill’s Footwear owner Martin Cahill, whose store is near the crossing on Rankin Street, arranged a meeting between businesses and Council on Tuesday evening, with about 20 people attending.

As a result Council decided to place sandbags as a way of physically marking on the street what they planned to do so local businesses could get a grasp of it, and a follow-up meeting will be held at 5.30pm on Monday May 2.

Mr Cahill and Chapter Two staff member Kim Sly said concerns were held mostly for the lack of communication from Council over the matter, but also on the kerb widening making the street too narrow for traffic. Council Acting General Manager Max Kershaw apologised for giving businesses just two days notice, adding it was “unacceptable”.

Greater protection with new flu vaccine:
A new four-strain flu vaccine, protecting against the nasty Brisbane virus, is being made available for at-risk Australians for free from this month, to help them build up their immunity in time for the peak flu season due in August 2016. The Federal Government has already begun rolling out the new 2016 vaccine, with $31.3 million made available for up to 4.48 million free doses
of the new flu booster. I encourage all residents to begin planning their flu shot sooner rather than later, and in particular those from high-risk groups who are eligible for the vaccination at no cost. This year’s vaccine would protect against four strains of influenza virus, up from three in 2015. For more information about the 2016 seasonal influenza vaccine, visit www.immunise.health.gov.au/ or call the Immunise Australia Information line on 1800 671 811.

RFS aerial support boosted: Two local Rural Fire Services are the beneficiaries of a joint Commonwealth-State funding announcement
of $2.59 million in projects to help better protect NSW communities from
the threat of bush fire. Both the Wellington Rural Fire Service and Bathurst Rural Fire Service will receive $35,000 each for their airbase tanks. Overall, the program has approved 19 fire trails and aerial firefighting supply tanks at 24 regional airstrips across NSW to provide easier access and more rapid response to fires. The Coalition government is proud to support the RFS
and provide them with the equipment they need to keep our communities safe.

Get To Know Your Norks

April 14, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

They have many names including boobs, bosom, bust, jubblies, orbs of greatness, bazoomas, tatas, pillows and mammary glands if you want to get technical, but when it comes to breasts its best keep it simple and to be as familiar with your own as you can be. On average 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives and 9 out of 10 women who develop the disease have no family history.

Though October is breast cancer awareness month, it’s important to keep this message current through all months of the year. As mentioned, as the majority of breast cancers are diagnosed in women with no family history and the key risk factors for breast cancer are being female and growing older, it’s absolutely vital that all women aged 50-74 receive their regular two-yearly mammogram which is free. However, all ladies over 40 are welcome to attend mammograms through Breast Screen NSW.

If you’re in these age groups, it’s recommended that you undertake a screening every two years to assist in early detection. No matter your age, if you notice anything unusual or different about your breasts, get them checked as soon as possible for your peace of mind if nothing else. A mammogram takes around twenty minutes, time well spent when it comes to looking after your health. Breast Screen NSW has appointments available every week in Orange and are located at the front of the Orange Health Service on Forest Road. Remember that cancer is mostly a random event that can happen to anyone, reinforcing the importance of screening for ALL women. Screening can find cancers before they are felt or noticed and you have a much better chance of survival when found early.

Please call 13 20 50 today to make an appointment for a FREE screening mammogram, it’s worth it! Breast cancer won’t wait, everything else can.

Magpies Beat Wellington To Cap Off Solid Pre-Season

April 14, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Magpies ran away with their final trial match of 2016 to send a strong message to the Group 11 competition this year. Despite some lazy period in the first half, the Magpies destroyed the Wellington Cowboys 56-22 in Wellington last Saturday.

The win came after they comfortably put away neighbours the Parkes Spacemen 38-16, while they also put on strong displays in their wins against Bathurst St Patricks, and the sides they beat on their way to the West Wyalong knock-out semi-final.

They were also one of the better sides in the recent Parkes Nines competition. Magpies President Greg Grogan said with a Group 11 round one bye this weekend, the Magpies were feeling confident heading into round two against the Cowboys in Wellington.

“It was over 30 degrees up in Wellington last Saturday, and the players did well to play like they did in the heat,” he said. “It was a really strong outing from our forwards, and they’re looking good for this season. But the whole side put on a really good attacking performance. They scored five or six tries in the second half alone.”

After scoring early in the first half, Grogan said the Magpies got lazy in defence, allowing Wellington back into the contest. But he said a half time lecture by captain/ coach Jake Grace brought the best out of them in the second stanza. The under 18s side also played in Wellington, but put in an effort Grogan said was well below their capabilities, coming home with a 28-10 loss.

Meanwhile the Magpies will officially launch their season at the Forbes Sport and Recreation Club tonight (Friday April 15). The launch will include dinner as well as music, drinks, and an auctioning of the first grade players’ jerseys to raise money for the club. The launch will start at 6.30pm, and Grogan said anyone is welcome to attend.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes? I have lived here for exactly 16 days, 12 hours and five minutes! (At the time of writing on Wednesday). But I have been visiting Forbes for the last 35 years due to my family relations.

What do you enjoy most about living in Forbes? I am impressed by the resilience of the town, and the strong ‘can-do’ attitude people here have. It’s a vibrant town, and a pretty river town. Lots of things happen here and the community has a great sense of pride.

How do you drink your coffee? I drink it white with one sugar.

Where would your dream holiday be to? I am going to be living my dream holiday in August when I travel to the UK with my wife. I love the history of the UK and I can’t wait to go over there and see it all. I’ll also get to find out more about my Scottish ancestry in Perth, Scotland, and am
going to see the Edinburgh Military tattoo.

Business Chamber Looking At 15-Year Plan

April 14, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

_DSC0856

The Forbes Business Chamber is currently working with the Forbes Shire Council on a 15-year plan to improve the town’s CBD. Chamber President Stuart Thomas said areas such as the CBD’s streetscape, shared zones, shade improvements as well as other ideas to improve the shopping experience in Forbes would be considered.

Mr Thomas said the overall goal was to make Forbes a “vibrant shopping space”. “We’ve got a goal with the view that we’ll end up with a vibrant shopping district, but also more than that, an area where the community will enjoy having a meal and a chat, and do their shopping,” he said.

“It would have a combined effect of social benefits for the community, but also
economic benefits, and the retailers would benefit.” “Retailers are effected by things like online shopping now, so they need to create a point of difference so more people will walk into the store. It’ll be about the shopping experience.”
Mr Thomas said the process would be long, but one that would see input by not just the Chamber and Council, but also businesses themselves and the community.

He said a revamp of the CBD and changes to the streets were not out of the question, and this was something Council had considered in the past, but remodeling the town would take a lengthy process of consultations.

“The concept is going to involve business input but also community input. You need something that people want rather than something that is forced into place,” he said. Mr Thomas added there were also benefits from businesses investing within themselves. “Tradesmen benefit from the work, and that brings money into the local economy, and it creates a new feel and freshens things up,” he said.

Mayoral Notes…

April 14, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

On Monday I attended the Newell Highway Task Force meeting in West Wyalong. There is quite a substantial investment being put into the Newell Highway and so there should be. It is one the busiest highways in Australia and it certainly needs a boost in investment. The Newell Highway brochures have a tiny hiccup this year with the Fit for the Future planning and possible amalgamations. It was decided that new brochures won’t be printed until amalgamations are confirmed.

I went along to the Forbes Rodeo on Saturday and I’ve never felt so proud. For a committee as small as it is to put on such an amazing event, Troy Read and his band of workers and committee deserve a big pat on the back. It was a great family event with great weather and everything was perfect. Only one change for next year – can we have some more food outlets, we were 50-deep and all hungry.

Our Acting General Manager Max Kershaw has fitted in very nicely into the organisation. His experience has allowed him to come in and keep everything moving along. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to him or if you have any issues to talk to the General Manager or myself about, don’t hesitate to make an appointment. It’s business as usual.

Next Thursday is our April Council Meeting and there is a lot on the agenda. The meeting starts at 1pm at the Council Chambers. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless.

New Registrar Enjoying The Forbes Lifestyle

April 14, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

_DSC0855

New Forbes Medical Centre registrar Dr Chen-yi Lo has already lived in a number of places in Australia, but says she is enjoying the friendly lifestyle Forbes has to offer. Dr Lo started working at the Forbes Medical Centre this year, along with fellow newcomers Dr Maria Rasool and Dr Farrah Yasmin.

It is her first permanent position in a General Practitioners clinic, with her previous work being in hospitals, apart from a brief three-month period. Dr Lo was born in Taiwan, and spent her school years in Singapore before relocating
to Melbourne in 2002, where she spent six years at the University of Melbourne in medical studies.

Before she moved to Forbes this year, she worked at the Ballarat Hospital in Victoria, and prior to that, she spent seven years working at hospitals in South Australia, where she first started work as a doctor. She is currently in a 12 month rotating working arrangement, and as such, she will move on to another, yet-to-be-determined, medical practice next year.

She said she was enjoying the friendly and easy lifestyle Forbes provided. “Forbes is very different from where I have been before. It’s a long way from the nearest major cities,” she said. “I have worked in rural communities before, so Forbes isn’t really that different in that way, but the distance from the nearest city is what is new for me.”

“The environment in Forbes is really enjoyable, and the people here are really friendly, so it hasn’t been too difficult getting used to living here.” Having worked mostly in cities, such as Adelaide and Ballarat, Dr Lo said there were differences in the environment of working in either setting.

“You get to know your patients a lot better working in a rural GP clinic than a city hospital, as the people will normally always come to see the same doctor,” she said.
