McCormack Wins A Third Term For Riverina And Central West

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Nationals’ Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, has thanked the people of the Riverina and Central West for endorsing him to serve as their representative in Canberra for a third term.

“I am humbled the people of the Riverina have placed their trust in me once more to be their strong advocate in Canberra,” Mr McCormack said.

“With the Riverina’s new boundaries, many people in the electorate have put their faith in me for the first time to deliver for them as their Federal Member. “I am delighted with the result in Riverina and I will continue to be a strong advocate for the region in the next Parliament.”

Mr McCormack also paid tribute to the hard-working volunteers who worked on his successful campaign, as well as the other candidates who stood for Riverina for a hard-fought and respectful contest. “I want to thank my volunteers who gave up countless hours of their time to stand out in the cold helping me at polling booths, both at pre-poll and on election day,” Mr McCormack said.

“The other candidates in the race for Riverina have generated a genuine contest of ideas during the eight-week election campaign and our communities are stronger for having such passionate people wanting to represent them.”

While it will still be a number of days before the nationwide result is finalised, Mr McCormack said earlier this week, the election had delivered a resounding result for The Nationals elsewhere in the country. “Though Capricornia and Flynn in Queensland are still too close to call, the people of regional Australia have overwhelmingly endorsed The Nationals as the party to represent the needs and interests of their communities,” Mr McCormack said.

“I want to congratulate the Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce, on a toughly fought and successful campaign in New England, as well as Damian Drum in Murray, who pulled off a spirited victory in a tight three-cornered contest.”

The MP was in Forbes during the election campaign to announce funding for the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre as part of the Safer Streets program. Two closed-circuit television cameras will be installed at the centre at a cost of $13,600.

Some familiar rural real estate faces in Forbes are now to be found at Ian Simpson & Co – a new independent and locally owned and staffed real estate agency. Ian Simpson & Co opened its doors for the first time last Friday.

The team, consisting of Ian and Tammie Simpson, Stacey Clarke and Ned Hamilton, formerly conducted Ray White Rural Forbes. They will build on their award winning business under the name of Ian Simpson & Co in the same location at 88A Lachlan Street, Forbes.

With the launch of the new business, Ian and his team will be able to offer a full selection of real estate services: rural sales – large scale through to hobby farms; rural property leasing; residential and commercial sales; residential and commercial property management; and water trading.

In addition Ian Simpson & Co will have a much larger geographic footprint covering rural property sales in areas around Cowra, Grenfell, West Wyalong, Canowindra, Wellington and places further afield. Ian Simpson & Co is a family owned business dedicated to providing excellent customer service to not only vendors but also to buyers. The new company plans to take auctioneering services to a new level with excellent research and reporting.

Ian said “We will listen to what you have to say! We know that your success is our success, and we will work incredibly hard to achieve the best results.”

State’s Top Junior Squash Players In Action

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes and Parkes Squash Clubs are making history this weekend by hosting the first ever NSW Junior State Age Squash Championships to be held in a regional centre.

To make the event even more spectacular, it will be one of only two gold ranked events to be held in the state this year, which means top players from NSW and Australia will be competing because of the ranking points on offer. The NSW team will also be announced at the completion of the three days to represent the state in the team event at the National Junior Championships in Thornleigh in September.

Forbes’ Regan Acret, playing in the under 17 division is expected to be contesting for state selection. Other Forbes players taking part are Blair Thomas and Brodie Acret (under 15’s) and William Wallace (under 13’s). About 100 players will be in action coming from all over NSW, the rest of Australia and even New Zealand and Oceania. They will be competing in divisions from under 11 through to under 19 for both girls and boys. Local players include 12 from Parkes and four from Forbes.

The Parkes and Forbes Clubs have had some fantastic local support, with Parkes Services Club going above and beyond to make the event a success and ensure the facilities are top class. All four courts in Parkes have been renovated in the past six months, with a complete renewal of front walls, floors sanded and paint throughout the entire centre. Western Road Liners are offering a bus services between the two centres for the tournament.

Darcie Ready To Take On The World

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Rugby 7's

For the past 18 months Darcie Morrison has been learning the rules and skills necessary to be competitive in the sport of Rugby 7’s. Her selection in the Australian University team is testament to her dedication and willingness to learn considering her extremely short time in the sport.

The Australian team is currently in Swansea in Great Britain to contest the 7th World University Championship. The Championships are part of the sporting events of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) that are hosted every even-numbered year, alternating with the Summer and Winter Universiade.

Competitions are played in more than 50 sports. Rugby Sevens entered the programme of the FISU World University Championships in 2004 and has been increasing in popularity ever since with the 7th edition being hosted at the Swansea University International Sports Village. The first year nine countries took part, and this year 20 teams from 15 countries will be competing.

The two Australian teams flew from Brisbane last Sunday for the first leg to Singapore, continuing on to London, followed by a four hours bus trip to Swansea. Darcie met up with the NSW members in Sydney who then made their way to Brisbane. Both teams will have the opportunity to train together for two days prior to the competition.

The Australian Women’s team will play in Pool B which will see them up against Canada, China, Spain and Portugal. The Men will take on Great Britain, Namibia, Italy and the Czech Republic in Pool A. The teams will play two games each day and their place in the finals on the 9th will be dependant on their results.

Other nations competing include Argentina, France, Kenya, Japan, Malaysia and New Zealand. On departure, Darcie had mixed emotions of excitement, anxiety and nerves but was proud to be wearing the Green and Gold and having the chance to compete for her country. “I couldn’t wait to try on my
kit when it arrived and can’t wait to see the playing gear,” she said. “This is my biggest achievement in sport and I hope I can play well and do my best without making any mistakes.”

Darcie was given this opportunity through the Australian Institute of Sport Sports Draft program and identification and selection by the New South Wales Rugby 7’s Development program.

Mayoral Notes…

council

On Tuesday we had a meeting with the Australia Rail Track Corporation in relation to the Inland Rail project. It is extremely exciting that this project is getting closer to becoming a reality. It was also heartening to see that community members visited the information sessions held in the Town Hall on Monday afternoon.

Our new General Manager Danny Green started this week and he is fitting in very well. Danny brings with him a range of experience and we are very pleased to welcome him to Forbes. At our budget meeting last week Council resolved to commit to a partnership with the Forbes Triathlon, providing $15,000 a year for the next three years towards the event, which is fantastic.

The Centroc Road Transport Technical Committee is in the process of developing a regional strategy to update crucial road links within the Centroc Council areas. This will be extremely beneficial when we are lobbying for funding.

I can’t impress enough that when our unsealed roads are closed to vehicles over 3 tonnes in wet conditions, if they are driven on your insurance is at risk if there is an accident. We are very mindful to do all we can to keep our roads open.

The Tai Chi classes Council sponsored with Cheryl Shirvington and Sandra Nicholson at the Uniting Church Hall have been very successful. The classes will continue on Tuesdays after the school holidays, with the first from 10am to 11am on July 19.

Have a great week, stay safe and God bless.

Jemalong Wool Pty Ltd Weekly Market Update

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

download

Week ending: 30 June 2016
It was a strong finish to the 2015/16 season with the NRI gaining 14 cents to close at 1,317 the second highest season closing level on record.

Although all 3 centres were in operation it was another small sale of 28,866 bales making it the smallest 3-centre sale since August. It was a similar pattern to last week with the overall market spurred on by strong support in the medium/broader micron ranges, while the finer microns results lagged their broader counterparts, firming by a more modest 5 to 10 cents clean.

Merino Skirtings maintained good competition and firmed slightly. Merino Cardings also held firm for the week. Crossbreds had mixed results; recent support for the finer microns (25/26) persisted this week while the broader microns lost ground.

Two more auctions remain before the annual three week recess; next week is estimated at 38,265 bales.

Aboriginal Web Resource Turns One This NAIDOC Week

The Aboriginal web resource of the NSW Cancer Council is celebrating its first birthday. Launched during NAIDOC Week 2015, the site is designed for Aboriginal people affected by cancer, their community and carers, and health professionals to access information and resources.

“A year after going live, trends for what type of content visitors find most useful have become apparent,” said Annemaree Binger, Regional Manager Cancer Council NSW Western Region. “Aboriginal people told us that they wanted stories about Aboriginal people’s experiences with cancer, particularly stories about people who have survived cancer.”

These stories are popular, as well as stories from the community. One story called Robin Payne’s journey was a particular favourite. Practical pages, such as accommodation information for patients and carers, were also popular, as were research results, according to Annemaree.

Cancer is the second most common cause of death for Aboriginal people, who are 60% more likely to die from cancer than non-Aboriginal people. Committed to reducing these inequalities, Cancer Council NSW investigated the reason behind the increased death rate and assessed the cancer experiences of Aboriginal people in NSW through the Aboriginal Patterns of Cancer Care project (APOCC). Insights from the project have informed the content and structure of the website.

Honorary Professor Dianne O’Connell, lead researcher on the project at Cancer Council NSW, says that the APOCC project has provided Cancer Council NSW with a detailed understanding of the gaps in cancer care for Aboriginal people, including the barriers that are likely to prevent access to appropriate and timely cancer care.

“The information on our website for the Aboriginal community is designed to target the gaps identified by the research in clear and culturally appropriate formats.” Visit Cancer Council NSW’s website for Aboriginal people at: http://www.cancercouncil.com.au/aboriginalcancer/

Wet Weather Affects Stock Grazing

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

With all the wet weather stock grazing on winter forage crops may not be currently performing to their potential. Symptoms may include scouring, increased respiration, agitation, nasal and ocular discharge and lameness.

There is often a poor balance of the nutrients stock required to ensure their digestive and metabolic systems function properly. This results in poor feed utilisation (wasted feed), poor growth and weight gain potential.

Supplementation of stock with Grazemax Ultra loose mix has shown significant weight gain advantages and up to 65% less feed consumed per kilo of weight gain. Crop nitrogen requirements should also be closely assessed to meet potential crop demands.

Many factors will influence crop requirements such as paddock history, sowing nutrition, grazing, target yield and weed presume to name a few. Ground-spread topdressing opportunities are a little difficult at the moment so it’s best to be prepared. Speak to a local agronomist to help with topdressing considerations.

Farming Fun in Mudgee

For almost 40 years, the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days has been putting people living on the land in touch with the latest information, best practices and hundreds of exhibitors. Small farms, hobby farms, tree changers and small family holdings have been a focus, as it is often these ‘new chums’ that need a ‘leg up’ in dealing with all those things that need doing on the land, be it fencing, rain water storage, choosing livestock, machinery and implements or a robot drone to go fetch the sheep.

Equestrian activities have been growing in popularity at the event, reflecting how horses are increasingly the focus of many small, rural holdings. Come to the new display areas and enjoy talks from presenters such as Mark Langley and Merje Summiloff who will talk about horse starting and equine psychology.

A healthy dose of retail therapy is provided, Fashion Parades run three times a day, and the Founders Pavilion is packed with gourmet treats, fashion exhibits, private schools, health and home wares to satisfy to neediest shopper.

Events this year include three times a day fashion parades, displays from craftsmen such as Roy Davi the Leura bodger and a new permanent feature, the Festival of Yesteryear, a celebration of how things were done in the good old days. See you at the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days 15th & 16th July, for more information see www.mudgeefielddays.com.au

News On Rankin Takes Over From Nocks

July 7, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The team at News on Rankin are looking forward to be offering the same great, friendly service shoppers have enjoyed from long serving local newsagents Ken and Margaret Nock.

Following an announcement last week that the Nock’s would be closing their Lachlan Street store, the News on Rankin team will continue to service the distribution areas of South Forbes as well as their current North Forbes territory.

“We’re excited to be welcoming Kerry Stephenson, who has delivered the papers for the Nocks for close to a decade, to our team,” said Gabe McMillan, News on Rankin owner. “Kerry will be continuing the service to all South Forbes residents and sub agents.”

The team at News on Rankin are working hard to ensure a smooth transition for all customers as they embark on a new chapter for the Rankin Street business, as well as ensuring services continue as usual for the Forbes community.

“I would love to take this opportunity to thank Ken and Margaret for their contribution to our industry over the past 30 years as well as their commitment to the business community of Forbes for this time,” Gabe said. “It’s been an absolute pleasure to be dealing over the years both as a customer as well as business associate.”

“Ken and Margaret have offered a wonderful service to their clients for a long time and I want to ensure that with my team we continue to offer excellent customer service,” said Gabe. “I encourage anyone with queries to contact myself or one of my team and we will be more than happy to answer any questions for customers.”
