Our Bloke – Allan Hilder

October 9, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? Well, I tell everybody I went to school here last century, but I have been here for five years, I’m only a blow in.

What was your first job? I was a farmer born and bred, I left school and that’s what I did.

What makes you laugh the most? A good yarn.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? I’m pretty well enjoying what I’m doing at the moment and as long as my health hangs out I don’t wish to travel or anything like that, I’ve been there and done that at 82 years of age and 60 years married.

Describe your dream holiday? I would like to spend a couple of months in the Kimberley.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? I can remember tearing down the backyard one day on the dinky and the front wheel collapsed.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? Oh, this’ll do, I’m pretty happy here.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My family.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? I’d stop all the wars, I’m pretty full on about that.

What is your pet hate? Sweet potato!

Mayoral Notes

October 2, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

What crazy weather we are having this week. It is like four seasons in one week! All the lovely rain we have had is making the region look so wonderful and our sporting fields are looking magnificent. Congratulations to the two football teams who won their Grand Finals on the weekend, well done.

This week we have opened a survey to the community regarding the tourism of the Forbes Shire. We are using the Council’s “Your Say” platform to gather the community’s feedback. It is so important we plan for tourism and ensure we have the right facilities and attractions to create a unique and sustainable holiday destination. We have always believed Forbes is best suited for year-round tourism, not just one or two events. That is where the sculptures and our beautiful waterways come into play, they are accessible all year round.

When the pandemic resolves and travel is again permitted, the competition will be fierce among destinations. We want to stand out from the crowd!

Plans have begun for celebrating NAIDOC this year. It will take place on 13 November and will be a little different with numbers limited to 150, and the schools will be unable to join the public gathering. They will celebrate the day at their respective schools. We are calling on award nominations so be sure to look at our website for more details. Until next week,

God Bless.
Your Mayor Phyllis Miller

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Forbes for almost two years and I like the sense of community. I like that it is both small enough and big enough and people here are lovely.

What was your first job? I worked in a café in Tullamore and got $6 an hour, cash.

What makes you laugh the most? My clients do, when they tell me funny things.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? I’d buy myself a beautiful house with a pool, I’d have a maid, butler, chef and aerobics instructor.

Describe your dream holiday? I’d like to go somewhere peaceful and quiet along the river with my husband.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? Back in the 1980’s with no mobile phones or internet, the music was better, and kids played outside, such a different and better time.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My great grandmother and my parents, who I haven’t seen in a while.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? I’d be like Wonder Woman.

What is your pet hate? Laziness, there is no need for it, I can’t stand it.

In The Spirit Of Generosity

October 2, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Evening Branch CWA Publicity Officer Sue Cunningham, Secretary Shirley Redfern, President Karen Wright, and Heather Mackinnon with Women’s Refuge team members Dallas Haynes and Wendy McMaugh.

The Forbes CWA Evening Branch have again shone the light of generosity on women and children in crisis by donating boxes of books, colouring in equipment, and games to the Forbes Women’s Refuge.

The many boxes of items were presented to CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes Refuge team members Wendy McMaugh and Dallas Haynes last week.

“We know these times have been really hard for many families and our members are always keen to help out,” said Ka- ren Wright, President of the Forbes CWA Evening Branch.

“We specifically chose these items hoping they would be a distraction from what is happening to their families and what they have had to escape from,” Karen said.

Refuge team member Wendy McMaugh sincerely thanked the Forbes CWA Even- ing Branch for the donations to the families.

“These items are very important to our families as they often leave with so little, and now because of the Evening Branch, we can give some lovely new things to them to start their new life with,” Wendy said.

This is not the first time the Forbes CWA Evening Branch has generously supported the refuge. Through their ongoing fundraising they often purchase and supply pyjamas and other essential clothing for families at the Refuge.

For the CWA, improving the conditions and welfare of all women and families, especially in rural and regional areas is one of the focal points of its advocacy and lobbying to the government. Forbes CWA Evening Branch are doing their bit by working to address issues affecting our own local community.

“By supporting the Women’s Refuge and supplying essential items, we are helping to do this in a practical and positive way,” said Karen. “It may not be heard at government level, but our local women and families will benefit.”

Is there enough mental health support in Forbes?

October 2, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Amy Draper: God no, definitely not.

Jodie Elliott: No. I work in social-emotional well being in Condo for Aboriginal health. I think that there are not enough professional services for youth. Once a month care is ridiculous when we are trying to support someone who is suicidal, a Skype video call with a psychologist doesn’t help much and does not encourage those who need help, to seek support. Also, if someone needs regular injections of antipsychotic medication, a once a month visit doesn’t help. There is a massive need for support in our community and the resources simply are not available.

Croquet Catch-Up

October 2, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Results for Golf Croquet for the week ending on Saturday, 26 September 2020.

There were thirty-six players on Tuesdays Golf Croquet. Three follow-ons would just about be a record and the line-up of cars was impressive. The game is certainly becoming more popular. Forbes Croquet Club welcomes all new members to share the happy few hours on the courts.

After croquet, players had a lovely cake for one of their older members. It was a great moment for Merv Langfield, who has just achieved the milestone of his 90th birthday, well done to Merv.

There were only three players who won three games: Merv Langfield, Jeff Liebich and Neville Spry. The closest games on the day were:
• Judy Ellis and Kevin Rubie 7, defeated Dorelle Scott and Colleen Liebich 6.
• Bob Murray and Jeff Liebich 7, defeated Joan Littlejohn and Lorraine Todd 6.

Callaghan Trophy Success

October 2, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Sponsor Albie Callaghan (centre) with grandson Harrison, son Todd, and son-in-law Brodie.

The Saturday competition was the annual holding of the ‘Albie Callaghan Trophy’, an 18-Hole, four person Ambrose Medley event, sponsored by Albie Callaghan. This format usually provides for a quick round, with a specified number of drives per player, but often Murphy’s Law intervenes.

The winners were a group led by new member Dave Tilsdley, with three visitors being Mark Wood, Mike Blackstock and Jarrod Kelly, with a score of 55 3/8. As Albie said, “Full credit to them for playing so well on an unfamiliar course.” Runners-up were Brett Thomas, Andy Cogswell, Nigel Davies from Caragabal, and new member Luke Flakeyar on 57 and a half nett.

The ball sweep went to 59.5 points: 58 1/4 – J Reid, A Cole, L Whitfield, M Simmons; 58 3/8 – Albie, Todd, Harrison Cal- laghan, B Hodges; 58 1/2 – Niel, Carolyn, Brianna Duncan, A Grierson; 59 1/4 – J Dobell, N Ryan, J Cutler, G Hooper; 59 1/4 K Steele-Park, A Tooth, T Cogswell, A Mc- Kinnon; 59 1/2 – P Dawson, K Herbert, P Cowhan, R Baker.

The NTP’s went to 9th – Ladies: B Drabsch, Men: J Bernardi; 18th – Ladies: S Redfern, Men: A Cole. The third Hole Super Pin went to Ron Morris, who seems to consistently do well on that hole, despite his protestations.

This was a momentous playing of the ‘Albie Callaghan Trophy’, but unfortunately without a fairy tale ending. Albie was thrilled to play alongside son Todd, grandson Harrison and son-in-law Brodie and they were happy to land in the fourth spot.

Despite the sunny weather on Sunday there was no Stableford Medley, as only a smidgeon of players ventured out.

The 2020-21 ‘Summer Super Sixes’ Competition, sponsored by ASI Capital, will commence with competitive rounds on 12 October. A handicapping period will be played from Thursday, 1 to Sunday 11 October for those that are new and want to participate.

The Forbes Nissan Classic on Saturday, 14 and Sunday, 15 November is set to widen its range of participants after recent changes to COVID-19 restrictions, which should ensure a larger than expected field.

Nominations are urgently sought for the Events Committee, and players should give consideration to participation on the Management Committee. Contact the Events Committee Chairman Steve Grallelis if you want to know more.

Important events to note are Sunday, 25 October, the VW Scramble. Saturday, 31 October is the Kristie Carpenter Memorial Trophy Day. Friday, 23 October is the Legends Pro-Am, it is uncertain if this will proceed, but keep your eyes open for details.

Saturday, 3 October is Monthly Medal Day for the men, sponsored by Forbes Concrete. Stableford Medley’s are scheduled for Sunday, 4 and Monday, 5 October, with daylight saving commencing on Sunday.

Be Aware This Magpie Breeding Season

October 2, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

While the spring season of birth passes quietly for many Australian native species, a few, like the Magpie can make renewal a bit rowdier.

The magpie breeding season lasts until November and can be stressful for many people as dive bombing Magpies turn our favourite outdoor places into no go zones.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Ranger Steve Woodhall says there are a few simple steps to take to avoid swooping magpies. “For most of the year Magpies are welcome additions to our lives, helping control garden pests, and filling our ears with their beautiful song,” Steve said.

“However, for around six weeks of the year, some male magpies become aggressive and swoop anyone who enters their territory where they are nesting.”

“This can be alarming but being tolerant and avoiding areas where Magpies are known to swoop is the best way to avoid conflict. They are only being responsible parents by protecting their young from perceived threats,” he said.

Some simple and effective steps people can take to help protect themselves and should teach children include:
• Never harass or provoke Magpies.
• Keep calm. Walk quickly but do not run.
• Try to keep your eye on the Magpie, they are less likely to swoop when they are being directly watched.
• Dismount your bicycle or horse.
