A Santa Surprise

December 18, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

The big surprise at the Forbes North Schools as Community Centres (SaCC) Playgroup, CatholicCare Playgroup and Rhyme Time Christmas Party was that Santa made it through quarantine in time to bring some Christmas cheer to the party. The families were delighted to see Santa, who delivered Christmas cheer and books to all of the children. Santa’s helpers Tash, Maree, Candice, and Lucy were on board to help with delivering presents and providing some Christmas activities and morning tea. “What a lovely way to end the year,” said Maree Yapp from Forbes North SaCC, “I was so excited to see Santa, especially this year.”

Playgroups and Rhyme Time will be back in February in 2021 and there will be an activity every week day for families with young children. “I am looking forward to 2021 and working with the families again” said Tash Harris from CatholicCare. The team from Forbes North SaCC and CatholicCare look forward to working with the Forbes community again next year and wish everyone a very merry Christmas.

WNSWLHD Celebrates Nurse Practitioner Week

December 18, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Nurse Practitioner Linda Doherty has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to health in the Western NSW Local Health District.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Nurse Practitioner Day, on Saturday, 12 December.

Western NSW LHD (WNSWLHD) Executive Director Quality, Clinical Safety and Nursing, Adrian Fahy, said, “It is so important to celebrate and acknowledge the Nurse Practitioners (NP’s) who work across our district.”

“Our NP’s are highly skilled, advanced practice registered nurses who are trained to independently assess patients, order diagnostic tests, interpret the results of these tests, from working patient diagnoses and prescribe certain medications to treat illness.”

This year there were 10 finalists for the Western NSW Local Health District Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award. “It was a difficult choice only selecting one winner,” Adrian said. The 2020 WNSWLHD Nurse Practitioner of the Year is Linda Doherty.

Linda is a Nurse Practitioner who works within Alcohol and other Drug Services to support people manage their addictions across the local health district.

Director of Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Jason Crisp, said, “Linda is extremely deserving of this award. She is an innovator who is always looking to improve the health outcomes for people within the community. Linda is a great mentor to staff, an educator, compassionate, caring nurse and professional.”

Adrian went on to express gratitude for all of the NP’s working across the Western NSW Health District and hopes that the award not only highlights the fantastic work they do, but also recognises the significant contribution they bring to health services and communities.

The Book Dispensary; Forbes’ Newest Local Now Open

December 18, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

The Book Dispensary will be open for late trading throughout December and offers gift vouchers as a perfect gift for the book enthusiasts in our local community.

The team opened the doors of the new local bookstore on Friday morning last week and were thrilled to see so many people pop in to show their support and to peruse the wide selection of books, games and gifts. The feedback from many has been how wonderful it is to finally have a book shop in Forbes.

Nothing beats entering a cosy store to the smell of new books, surveying titles, browsing synopsis and taking on a recommendation from a friendly staff member. The team at The Book Dispensary are very thankful for all of the community’s input, ideas and support.

Business Manager, Debbie Prior, and her team of recruits, have been working around the clock to get the shelves stocked ahead of Christmas and have lots more in store for 2021. “The Book Dispensary will launch a Community Give Back program in the New Year, with a percentage of sales going to a chosen local charity. A loyalty program will also be available so the avid readers of Forbes and the surrounding areas can benefit from buying local. We also plan to set up a book group and host evening events around specific topics or themes,” aid Debbie Prior, “This is just the beginning.”

While Debbie has done her best to provide a range of all of the books the Forbes community would like to read, she appreciates that there will be lots of titles and authors that will need to be ordered in. So, do not hesitate to ask Debbie and her team in-store or via orders@thebookdispensary.com.au.

“This is just phase one of our bookstore business plan, so if you have any ideas to suggest for us to incorporate in the store, drop by and let us know, or email us at info@thebookdispensary.com.au. Thanks so much for your support.”

Mayoral Notes

December 18, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

I do hope everyone has been busy shopping locally for the festive season. We are so lucky to have the amazing retailers we have here in town, there really is nothing you cannot get here in Forbes. I recently went into every shop to film them all for a promotion we have on Facebook and I couldn’t believe the selection out there to choose from, it really is amazing!

Our town is looking so fantastic at the moment and I encourage you all to take a drive around at night to see all the wonderful light displays we have installed throughout town; they are even down at Lions Park. We also have the Santa Koala Christmas story projected onto Town Hall, which is a must to take the kids to see.

I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year. I hope 2021 will be a better one for us all. Our farmers look like they have achieved a very successful harvest season after many not-so-successful seasons. I want to remind everyone to stay safe on the roads this holiday season, drive carefully and if you have had a drink please do not get behind the wheel of a car.

That’s all for this year. God Bless.

Your Mayor,
Phyllis Miller

Central West Livestock Exchange Receives Drought Stimulus Funding For Shade Sails

Forbes Shire Council has received $85,000 for shading at the Central West Livestock Exchange (CWLE) sheep yards from the NSW Government Local Drought Stimulus Program. The much-needed sails have recently been installed.

“This installation is all part of the plan for the extension of the CWLE, with a further $3.4 million spent on expanding the yards to include a multi-species yards undercover early this year,” says Forbes Shire Council General Manager, Steve Loane. “This area was in need of shade given the extreme heat we experience here on sale days during summer.”

“Animal welfare is always front of mind for Council and the shade makes a considerable difference to not only the animals but the people on the ground as well. The shade sails will ensure stock is kept in a stable condition, ensuring they are fit for transport and fit for consumption,” said Steve.

Forbes Shire Council are the current holders of the ALMA Animal Welfare Award which they received in 2019, for their commitment to best practice in animal welfare at the Central West Livestock Exchange.

“The sails amongst all the other improvements taken place at the CWLE, are simply amazing,” says Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller. “With over 1.4 million sheep traded annually at this site, we needed to make sure animal and human safety was a key driver. We are very grateful to the State Government for the grant funding to enable us to do this incredible work. These farmers are the backbone of our community, we need to look after them.”

The CWLE is a state of the art facility which was purpose-built for the selling of quality cattle, sheep and pigs. The facility was built in 2005 and is a key economic driver for the Forbes Shire.

Giving Back This Christmas

December 18, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

In the lead up to Christmas, Rural Aid is encouraging Australians to keep farmers in need in their thoughts by hosting Christmas parties with a cause or buying a gift card for a primary producer family as a gift.

CEO of Rural Aid John Warlters says it has been a particularly challenging year for the farming sector and a small gesture at Christmas time can have a major impact on rural families.

“Drought, bushfire and flood are regular and devastating realities for Australian farmers. These challenges create financial, emotional and practical hurdles for this crucial sector of our community and economy,” John said.

“This year has featured all of these challenges. Vast swathes of farmland are still in drought and COVID created new pressures for farmers this year. Domestic border closures impacted the supply chain, and international border closures impacted the workforce of shearers and fruit pickers.”

But this festive season, Australians can make a difference in many ways. Gift cards can be purchased on behalf of a friend or family member that will make a difference in the life of a farming family, see www.ruralaid.org.au/christmas for more information.

Two Hot Scores In Stableford Competition

December 18, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday, the Men’s Competition was an Individual Stableford event, sponsored by Knights Fabrications, with 65 players participating. Two players managed scores of 40 points or better

The Division 1 winner was Andrew Grierson with 40 points, constructed by a balance of birdies to offset bogeys. Runner-up was Niel Duncan with 38 points, whose round was spoiled by wipes on the 6th and 7th holes.

In Division 2, Ben Coles recorded the best score of the day with 43 points. Runner-up was Max Haley, with 37 points, who started quietly then scored steadily.

The ball sweep went to 33 points on count back, check in the Pro Shop to see if you earned one. The NTP’s went to 9th, G Hooper, 18th, J Bernardi, who both converted for two’s. The Third Hole Super Pin went to Todd Callaghan. The only other player to score a “2” was Brodie Hodges on the 18th. Visitors included Robert Hey and Wayne Powter from Parkes.
Numbers were too small for a competition on Sunday, but the players deserve some encouragement, with Ray Taylor and Peter Grayson, both on 38 points, sharing the balls.

Over the Christmas break there will be Stableford Medleys on Saturday, 26, Sunday, 27 and Monday, 28 December. The first competition day will be the Monthly Medal on 2 January.

Players are also being called to nominate now for the Pennants teams, which is due to commence in February 2021. Con- tact John Betland if you are interested or put your name on the sheet on the notice board in the Pro Shop.

Saturday, 19 December is the 18-Hole Stableford ‘Ham Day’. This may be your last chance to do well for Christmas dinner. Sunday, 20 December is a Stableford Medley.
