Netball News

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Netball Autumn night competitions are in full swing and proving very popular for all the players.

There are players still wanting to play. If anyone is looking for more players for their teams can they please let us know.

Night competitions for both mixed and ladies teams are lots of fun, and exercise is also a bonus.

All teams are reminded that the Forbes All Age carnival will be held on Sunday, and all teams must be entered by Wednesday night.

Carnival nomination forms and entry conditions have been emailed to all the team representatives.

It only costs $33 per team to enter for a full day of netball fun. Teams can be made up from any player who is registered with NNSW, to play on the day. There are grades to suit all teams.

Last week, some teams still played players who were not registered and will forfeit their games. Teams that forfeited are FPS, Ball Busters, Schofields.

Could the team representatives from these teams please come to the office on Wednesday night, and check who still needs to pay the full registration.

Hodge Swans In To Take Linx Event

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Brian Hodge was ‘home’ last weekend from the Gold Coast to leave as winner of the LINX sponsored golf stroke competition scoring 71 nett. The day attracted 87 play-ers where next best was Jack Dobell 72 nett.

Les Little is the form golfer at present and since making a full time return to the game is regularly winning weekend and mid-week veteran competitions.

Les won B grade with the best score for the day, 68 nett. Joshua Wood was runner-up, 72 nett.

Another to be smiling celebrating after was Scott Kirkman with an eagle two on the 12th hole.

Golf scheduled for this weekend – Saturday stroke and the Monthly Medal sponsored by Adept Plumbing. Note for men on Sunday, course will be closed until 1pm for the Ladies Open.

Entries are starting to flood in for the Forbes Open Tournament set down for Saturday and Sunday, 15-16 May. Sunday’s play will also be a round of the NSW Open qualifiers.

With our tournament coming up, just a reminder to keep the game moving to eliminate slow play. Shotgun starts are sometimes the cause of hold ups in the field and we all need to get in for lunch also. After holing out, head to the next tee and someone should tee off immediately, don’t all stand there and mark the cards before someone tees off. Ready Golf, this will also help to keep the game moving.”

There was nothing but praise for the Forbes golf course and organising committee on Monday evening after the first round of this week’s Forbes Veterans Week of Golf.

Monday’s competition attracted 112 starters for the four-ball stableford medley with the husband and wife combination of Lee-Anne and Tony Calligia from Wyong best in with 46 points.

Forbes ladies Debbie Dingwall and Rose Carroll were not far behind runners-up with 44 points on a count-back.

Presentations for play from Tuesday and yesterday were made at a dinner in the Golf Hotel last night. Today’s presentation after play. Full results next week.

Panthers Make It Seven Heaven

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Charlie Staines Penrith Panthers have made it seven in a row in a dour struggle against finals hopefuls Newcastle last weekend. While the 24-6 scoreline flattered the Panthers, Staines was impressive again with a number of good touches and defensive reads. This weekend the mountain men take on a resurgent Manly in Bathurst.

Manly are also in good form and are a different side to a month ago when Penrith put them to the sword with Tommy Turbo back from injury.

Winners Of 11th Annual Anzac Writing Competition Announced

April 23, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Once again students from the Riverina and Central West have showed off their creative writing talents and history research skills through their high-quality entries in the 11th annual ANZAC writing competition organised by Riverina MP Michael McCormack.

The Deputy Prime Minister was impressed with having received more than 900 entries from 47 schools across the electorate. Mr McCormack said whilst all entries told a story which conveyed the gravity of war, the winning entries stood out for their reflection on the importance of our National Day and how different last year’s commemoration was in the shadow of COVID-19.

“I want to sincerely thank each and every student who took the time to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard to participate,” Mr McCormack said.

“Everyone who took part should be proud of their work and those whose wrote winner and highly commended entries should be especially happy with themselves, with each of them set to receive a book prize for their efforts.

“As we seek to return to a form of normality in the wake of COV-ID-19, it is pleasing ANZAC services will be back this year.”

Entries were put into primary and secondary categories, with the Riverina electorate divided into North, South, East and West divisions. Each of the winning entries can be found in Mr McCormack’s 11th annual ANZAC Day commemorative booklet, which is currently arriving in letterboxes throughout the electorate. Striking stories and respectful recollections of heroic deeds and memories of local men and women from across the Riverina and Central West, including Forbes, Ariah Park, Coolamon, Cootamundra, Temora, Wagga Wagga and Yerong Creek, fill the 36-page booklet.

Red Bend College Year 10 student Madeleine Cannon, who won a Highly Commended in the North Division Schools – Secondary section will also feature.

Lest We Forget – ANZAC Day 2021

April 23, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

ANZAC SPIRIT: The ANZAC Spirit continues to live on in regional Australia with over 70% of people participating and some 63% of NSW also plan to celebrate the day.

ANZAC Day celebrations across Australia will be more subdued this year as many ease their way back into the new normal post COVID. While many will stay at home – a drop of approximately 14% from 2019 according to a recent online survey of 1000 over 18s, around seven in every ten in regional Australia will attend.

With ANZAC Day still holding special significance in rural areas, Forbes is expected to acknowledge the day with special events throughout the day.

The Forbes dawn service will begin at 5:30am at the Cenotaph, Victoria Park, Harold Street Forbes. Marchers will form up at 5:15am in front of Club Forbes (Forbes Services Memorial Club) 41-43 Templar Street, Forbes and at 5:20am proceed up to the Cenotaph, Harold Street.

At 10:30am, the march will begin at west end Cross St., then south along Lachlan St., east into Court St. and right (south) into Harold St. stopping at Victoria Park and Cenotaph. The service goes for approximately 35 minutes and includes but is not restricted to the following: Prologue, Hymns, Prayers, Commemoration Address, Commemoration for the Fallen, Wreath laying, Last Post, Ode, Reveille and ‘Advance Australia Fair’.

‘ANZAC’ stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. On the 25th of April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. These became known as Anzacs and the pride they took in that name continues to this day.

Catholic Schools Week 2021 Forming The Whole Person: Body, Heart And Mind

April 23, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Bishop Columba and Catholic Schools NSW CEO, Dallas McInerney, and Director of Catholic Education Wilcannia-Forbes, Anthony Gordon visit students in KW at St Laurence’s

Catholic Education Wilcannia-Forbes is celebrating Catholic Schools Week from 26 April – 2 May 2021, and St Laurence’s Parish School, Forbes, is inviting everyone to see first-hand the many good things happening at their Catholic school.

Plans are currently underway for a picnic lunch to be held and families and the wider community will be warmly invited to visit the school. Details will be advised shortly on their Facebook page (St Laurence’s Parish School Forbes), and in the school newsletter.

According to Dr Gerard O’Shea, Director of Mission & Religious Education at the Catholic Education Office, Forbes, this year’s theme reflects that if we are to educate a human being, we must attend to three key aspects of the human personality… the body, the heart and the mind.

Dr O’Shea believes that no dimension of human learning can be left out; each has its role to play.
“Catholic education must always respect all of these dimensions, and this deep understanding of what it is to be human has set our schools apart through two millennia of history and it is very evident today,” he said.

Paula Leadbitter, Principal of St Laurence’s said, “Catholic Schools Week is a special time for our school community and it is also a wonderful opportunity to invite the wider community to visit and see the many good things happening at our school.”

Anyone who is interested in learning about St Laurence’s unique and distinctive school community is warmly invited to contact the front office at any time or to make an appointment with the Principal.

The open classrooms will include interactive displays including the ‘classroom of the future, showcasing our extensive learning technology tools and student-centred virtual learning spaces.

With this in mind, I encourage parents, grandparents and members of the community to take the time to visit and participate in the many activities we have organised. You will be made very welcome,” she said.
