HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Croquet birthdays were celebrated by John Browne, Elvy Quirk, Carmel Murray and John Cole. Absent Lorna Field

On Tuesday, 4th May there were no games played due to wet lawns however we held our monthly luncheon at the Vandenberg Hotel. Cake on the day was provided by Penny Taylor for a few people celebrating birthdays.

On Saturday, 8th May for Aussie Croquet there were 25 players. Close games on the day were Harley Stewart and Jill Rubie 14 def Kevin Rubie and Bob Murray 13, Ray Burridge 14 def Barry White 13, Merv Lang-field and Doreen Rogers 14 def Cherylin Cole and Bob Murray 13, Harley Stewart and Bob Murray 14 def Cherylin and John Cole 13.

The winners of all three games were John Browne, Ray Burridge, Merv Langfield and Harley Stewart. Congratulations to those winners.

It was a very warm morning and some members took advantage of the shade area to partake in morning tea.

We are so pleased with our shade area which has been financed by our very own Croquet Club and the area is almost complete with three tables recently purchased by the Croquet Club from Felton Industries at Condobolin. We now have a small storage shed to complete and blinds for the area.

Our very valued member Joan Littlejohn is at present nursing a broken bone in her foot. We wish Joan a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you back on the croquet lawns very soon.

A reminder to all our members that we will be holding a General Meeting after play on May 18. Members your attendance is important.

Mayoral Notes

May 7, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

I would like to thank everyone who came along to our Contractor and Services Night. Our Shire has so much work planned for the next 12-18 months and Council wants as many locals as possible to get part of the workload.

Recently, I attended the Load Restraint Program Launch with Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and Mayors from Parkes and Lachlan Shires. This is such an important project and will aid in removing doubts about how to load heavy vehicles and hopefully reduce the number of dangerously loaded trucks operating on our regional roads.

I did use my time with the Deputy Prime Minister to question why some of the grants we have received recently stipulate using contractors and not using our local people to carry out the work. I will let you know his response next week.

Also met with TAFE, Adam Bennett, Michelle Cable and Adrian Flipo and I am gobsmacked to see what they have on offer through TAFE. We will work with them to ensure we have the very best training options we can available here in Forbes. Watch this space, I will give you more on that very soon.

Just a reminder about Heritage Week. The fun began on Saturday with the Heritage Festival in Victoria Park and Harold Street. There were some truly amazing stalls and entertainment on the day.

Last but definitely not least, I would also like to congratulate the recipients of the 2021 Youth Week Awards.

Your Mayor
Phyillis Miller

Forbes Contractor Night A Success

May 7, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

On Wednesday 28 April 2021, Forbes Shire Council held a Contractor Information Night to showcase the infrastructure projects commencing in the Forbes Shire and region over the coming 12 months. Event partners, Transport for NSW, Inland Rail, Sunrise Energy Metals and Evolution Mine were all on hand to present and outline the work they have occurring in the upcoming year.

“This is an exciting time for our Shire with so many projects on the go,” said Forbes Shire Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM.

“Nights like this help ensure as many locals as we can are employed by this work.”

The information night covered all the projects coming up in the next 12 months, right down to the individual scope of works within larger projects that local contractors could benefit from.

“It was great to see everyone have the opportunity to talk to service providers from procurement, employment and Work Health and Safety to find out additional information,” said Phyllis.

“We know it sometimes sounds really daunting to work with government and these types of information evenings help dispel that.”
