Midnight Flashes Rivals In Ladbrokes At Dubbo

October 1, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

WINNER: Midnight Flash photo finish from last week in Dubbo INSET: Maree Smith with grandson Charlie earlier this season. Midnight Flash’s win has made for a great recent run of form for the Smith family.

Raymond Smith trained Midnight Flash has taken out the Ladbrokes Country Challenge final in 29.73 at Dubbo last week. The $15 outsider won by three quarters of a length from Peter Sims trained duo of She’s a Pearl ($3.10) and She’s Salacious ($2.70) to take the $5000 prize money.

It continues an impressive streak for Smith who has some form dogs at the moment and seems to be winning races at will. The win by Midnight Flash was the Fernando Bale x Midnight Elsa black bitch’s second win in the last three starts. The two recent victories were split by a gallant second placing at Dubbo on September 18 after the stirring win in Temora earlier in September.

One of Smith’s other chargers Miss Ezmae claimed second in Race 7 continuing solid form over the winter.

The twilight meeting also held victory for another Forbes trainer – Errol Hughes who earlier saw his runner Blackfoot Angel fin-ish third behind Bruce Mick Glen in Race 8 in the Ladbrokes Split Multi 5th Grade over 516m.

Hughes also had Magic Fury take second in Race 10 over 400m in 23.45 behind Brown’s Boy in a great duel. Magic Fury showed plenty of courage and can only improve after the strong showing for Errol.

In the last, the Hughes-trained Meeka’s Angel, also a daughter of Brad Hill Billy, darted away after a burst out of box four that saw a sectional of 9.03! Meeka’s Angel was flying and looked good in the 400m race despite strong showings from Western Hero and Swift Kevin.

She passed the post with a half-length to spare in 23.21 paying $19 for the win, her ninth in 49 starts and not the last if this result means anything.

Redfern Takes Long Cycle Champs

October 1, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Haylee Redfern may not have had the prep she wanted but that didn’t stop the Forbes local producing some amazing results at the 2021 Girevoy Sport Australia Nationals. “It definitely wasn’t what I originally had in mind but the good old shed in Forbes definitely got the job done,” Haylee shared with followers in a Facebook post.

She finished with a Candidate Master of Sport OALC and came away with overall 3rd and a PB of 108 reps. She also finished with a Candidate Master of Sport 30min 12kg Jerk and TBC, one of the first athletes in Australia to try this lift coming away with 392 reps. But she was far from done.

“The highlight for me was coming away with the Australian National Long Cycle Championship,” she said.

“Years of training and patience has gone into my LC training and will continue to do so for when that day comes that I finally get the opportunity to step onto that platform to represent Australia at the World Championships,” Haylee said.

“A big thanks GSAA for another stellar run event and for the continued support of Australian Kettlebell athletes!”

History Beckons For Staines’ Panthers

October 1, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

30 YEARS AGO: Gooloogong’s Royce Simmons (pictured with trophy) after winning the 1991 grand final. Forbes Charlie Staines will be hoping his young side can do the same on Sunday. Photo courtesy of NRL.com

It is the grand final no one expected – South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Penrith Panthers at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday and pending last minute changes it appears Forbes Charlie Staines sadly will not be part of the match day 17. It is also 30 years since Gooloogong’s favourite son Royce Simmons held aloft the Provan-Summons trophy.

Simmons, in his last game for the Panthers, scored the winning try in a 19-12 grand final rematch with a star-studded Canberra Raiders side that included the likes of Junee’s Laurie Daley, Mal Meninga, Ricky Stuart and Brad Clyde among others.

Penrith, coming off a massive win over defending premiers Melbourne, will be looking not just for revenge against the Rabbitohs after a 16-10 loss three weeks ago but redemption after losing last year’s decider 26-20 to the Storm. Penrith will be wary after master coach Wayne Bennett ambushed the young side to earn a week off.

However the game plays out it will make for riveting viewing and hopefully the Forbes Ferrari gets a last-minute call up. Now that would be a story!

Our tip – Penrith by a point in a real close one.

Panthers Winning Off The Field Too

September 24, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

It appears Charlie Staines isn’t the only Forbes Ferrari winning on and off the field in Pantherland with Bayden Moran and Billy Phillips both added to the Panthers 2022 SG Ball train-on squad.

It is even more impressive given the disruption to sport in the past two years and the lack of continuity and consistent competition. While Penrith were busy beating Parramatta in the NRL finals last weekend 8-6, the Panthers SG Ball squad was announced via the highly successful Panthers Pathways that has seen the likes of Dubbo’s Matt Burton and others go through the ranks.

The 2022 squad is filled with the majority of players coming from Western Sydney as well as two from Forbes and one each from Cowra, Lithgow, Bathurst and even Queensland.

For Moran and Phillips it is testament to the hard work put in and good performances despite the COVID enforced breaks and interruptions. Forbes was the only club outside Dubbo or Western Sydney with two players selected. Well done!

Course Yields High Scores

September 24, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Last Saturday 90 players participated in the Men’s Individual Stableford comp, sponsored by Forbes Tuesday Golfers. The players shrugged off a midday shower to utilise the best conditions of the course and post some high scores.

Once again the Div-1 scores were quite close, necessitating a count back. Barry Shine, who got better as the day progressed, scored 38 points and was anointed winner on count back from Andy Cogswell, who was glad to be out playing.

The Div-2 had the better scores with Stuart Thomas calculating his way around for 41 points. Close behind were three players on 40 points, with Jake Hemming the winner on count back.

The ball sweep went to 33 points on count back, so please check in the Pro Shop. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Phil Wells, 18th – Glen Hooper. The 3rd hole Super Pin went to Clint Hurford with a shot of 1.4 metre proximity, which thrilled his day. Sam Ridley was the only visitor.

Sunday’s Stableford Medley saw many golfers enjoying the sunny conditions and dry greens. The winner was Jake Hemming with 36 points, ahead of Anthony Alley on 33 points. The ball sweep went to 32 pts on count back with Jake LeBrocque getting that. The 9th NTP went untouched, while the 18th NTP went to Anthony Alley.

With the release of Forbes Shire from ‘Stay-at-Home’ rules, golf will return to groups of 4 for competition play. Players must still wear their masks around the Pro Shop, use the QR code to register, and exercise social distancing at all times. Refer to the notices at the Pro Shop for more details.

On Saturday September 25, there is an Individual Stroke event, sponsored by Niel’s Complete Carpet Cleaning, in place of the programmed Roylances Cup. On Sunday there will be a Stableford Medley.

Tight Tussle To Determine Winners

September 17, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

SMACK: Rob Webb cracks a tee shot down the middle in the weekend Stableford at Forbes Golf Course. 94 players turned out to play in excellent conditions.

The field for Saturday’s Men’s Individual Stableford comp, sponsored by Albie Callaghan, was a very healthy 94 players. They all enjoyed the sunshine and fought hard to win the event.

In Div-1 the scores were quite close with five players a possibility to win. Eventually Ben Robinson prevailed with 38 points, finishing his round in great style. Runner-up on count back was Kim Herbert with 37 pts, nudging out three other golfers.

The Div-2 had a count back for the Winner’s position. Both Peter Tisdell and Isaac Vale finished on 39 points, but the nod went to Peter after an extensive count back process.

The ball sweep went to 35 points on count back, so please check in the Pro Shop. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Terry Griffiths, 18th – Todd Callaghan. The 3rd hole Super Pin went to Ian Bown with a shot of 1.1 metre proximity, the best for many weeks. Sam Ridley was the only visitor.

Sunday’s Stableford Medley was well supported and resulted in a stalwart player finally getting a good reward, although it was not easy.

The winner was Louise French who managed 39 points and succeeded on count back. Runner-up was Jake Shaw (39 pts). The ball sweep went to 36 pts on count back. The 9th NTP went to Harry Callaghan, while the 18th NTP went to Julie Hurkett.

The Parkes Open which was scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled.
On Saturday 18th September, there is an Individual Stableford in place of the programmed 4BBB Stableford Multiplier. On Sunday there will be a Stableford Medley.

Panthers v Eels In Western Sydney Finals Derby

September 17, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Having beaten South Sydney the last five times they played, it was always going to be a matter of time before the Rabbitohs bumped into Penrith again and jagged a win. Both teams have been among the top three all year and any Wayne Bennett lead side is too good to not fight back. With Souths it was their defence that needed fixing and that is what won them a classic qualifying final against the Panthers 16-10 on Saturday night.

Playing for the first time in a month, Forbes Ferrari Charlie Staines had an indifferent night for Penrith with a bad defensive read (that led to a try), a tough dropped ball and rustiness due to lack of game time. It also didn’t help that Dylan Edwards and Moses Leota were both scratched at kick-off. Staines will now sit out this week and hope for a start should they win and play Melbourne.

Penrith must beat arch-rivals Parramatta for the right to play Melbourne the following week in a grand final qualifier. Whatever happens it makes for intriguing viewing. Both Penrith and Parramatta have beaten Melbourne this year.

Tip: Panthers 1-12

Miss Ezmae Primed For Sydney Cup After Big Richmond Win

September 17, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

SYDNEY CUP BOUND: Raymond Smith trained Miss Ezmae is all primed for the Sydney Cup after a sensational track-record breaking run over 717m at Richmond last Sunday night. Photo courtesy of Adam Dobbin and The Greyhound Recorder. INSET: Photo finish of Miss Ezmae gets home by a length after a neck-and-neck battle with Super Estrella.

Miss Ezmae claimed her tenth win from only 16 starts on Sunday night at the Richmond track shaving two-tenths of the record in the process with an impressive 41.42 over the 717 metre carry. Even second placed Super Estrella took two lengths off the previous mark held by Blue Lorian back in 2011.

With Jungle Deuce iced for three weeks now with split webbing after Friday night’s track record breaking run in Temora, all eyes were on Miss Ezmae to see how she would fair in one of her biggest tests yet.

The Raymond Smith charger never had it all her own way, as she duelled with Super Estrella on a perfect night for racing. The daughter of Barcia Bale finally broke free from Super Estrella to score by a length in a dogged affair that seemed more like a war of attrition.

“When she was chasing Super Estrella I was just hoping she’d hang in there in the hope she might be close enough to get her late,” trainer Raymond Smith said after the win to The Greyhound Recorder’s Adam Dobbin.

“My bitch had a great preparation going into the race and it was a beautiful night for racing so it wasn’t a total surprise she broke the track record,” said Smith. “But to break it by so much was – she’s just got so much ability, which her record shows.”

Miss Ezmae secured her third track record in Sunday’s Richmond romp, her previous records established at Dubbo (605m) and Bathurst (618m).

Smith will now focus on the COVID-19 rescheduled ($100,000) Sydney Cup at Wentworth Park with heats slated for Wednesday, October 6 before the final on Saturday, October 15. No doubt we will be hearing a lot more.
