Forbes golfer John Betland made sure to keep it in the family when he won the Parkes Open Golf Tournament in the strongest field of the 43 year history of the event on Sunday. His brother Steve won the coveted title last year. Here is John with sponsor Bill Wakim of SCT Logistics at the presentation of trophies.
Last Tuesday was a very busy day following the croquet games with the club’s Annual General Meeting, where a new committee was elected.
Congratulations to Elvy Quirk on becoming the new President. This was held by a general meeting where some great decisions were made to help us through the next year.
Thank you to the Post Office Hotel for allowing the space to conduct meetings, and for hosting the birthday lunch in their new restaurant. We were served with some very delicious food followed by a luscious birthday cake for dessert.
The winners of the day with three winning games were Lorna Field and Harley Stewart. Congratulations to John Allegri, a very new and emerging player with consistent wins every week in both golf and Aussie games.
The cold is still with us and we have two members in hospital as well as those who are still battling colds and flu. Roll on spring and some warmer weather.
Last Saturday, Dorelle Scott and Bob Murray were the clean sweepers with three winning games each followed by seven members winning two out of the three games. Congratulations everyone.

Last Saturday’s men’s competition was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by McFeeter’s Motor Museum. There was a keen group of 50 players.
The A Grade was a tussle between John Betland, who scored a 68 scratch, nett 70, and Peter Dawson. Peter took the honours on count back with his 70 nett and played the back-9 under par, while John blitzed the front-9 with a 33.
The B Grade saw Robb Webb finish runner-up on nett 69 from Mike Spice who came in late with a nett 68 to take the honours. The C Grade had Denis Culley as winner with nett 69. Runner-up was Geoff Drane.
The ball sweep went to 73 nett, going to: 68 – M Spice; 69 – R Webb/ D Culley; 70 – P Dawson/ J Betland/ A Callaghan; 71 – D Bayley/ G Drane/ D Rhodes; 72 – P Kay and 73 – M Cahill/ J Zannes/ M Haley.
The NTP’s on the 9th and 18th went to John Betland.
Sunday’s Stableford Medley was won by John Betland with 37 points, ahead of his brother Steve with 36 points.
The NTP’s went to: 9th – John Betland; 18th – nobody.
The ladies 9-hole shoot-out was won by Julie Hurkett on the last hole over Barb Drabsch.

The Sanderson Trophy Day last Sunday was played in very windy and warm conditions with 10 teams braving the conditions in a close contest.
The winning team of Mike Wood, Dan Bayley, Bruce Carpenter and Mike Wood Jnr put on a powerhouse display going round the course in 61 scratch, scoring two eagles along the way, and recording nett 56 ¾.
Runners-up were Niel Duncan leading wife Carolyn, daughter Brianna, and “nominal sister” Verna Lane. They used their handicap well with nett 58 7/8. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Brianna Duncan and 18th – Ian Bown.
On Saturday the Men’s competition was an 18-hole stableford, sponsored by Robb’s Jewellers, saw a field of 56 players produce outstanding scores.
In the A-Division Brian Doyle finished with 45 points. His score of 38-38-76 was a model of consistency. Right behind him was Phil Maher with a score of 44 points.
The B-Division was won by Bruce Chandler scoring 41 points. Runner-up was Andrew McDonald with 39 points.
The ball sweep went to 38 points, going to: 45 – B Doyle; 44 – P Maher; 41 – A Dukes, R Nixon, B Chandler, 39 – A Borger, M Cahill, A McDonald, D Rhodes; 38 – D Henley, D Culley, A Callaghan, N McMillan, P Tisdell, C Barrett. The NTP’s went to: 9th – R Nixon; 18th – C Barrett.
The Winter 3’s competition went to Ray Taylor, Ron Morris and Jeff Haley with runners- up Julie Hurkett, Mary Ewing and Ev Uphill. The prize for the lowest individual score, a 25 nett, went to Kylie Brockman.
Tomorrow is the Monthly Medal, sponsored by McFeeters Motor Museum. Sunday will be an 18-Hole Stableford Medley. Saturday, 16th September is a 4BBB Stableford Medley, and Sunday has the Individual Stableford Medley.

The Forbes Netball Association held three exciting grand finals last weekend to finish the Saturday competition season.
The Division 1 grand final saw Open Blacks winners over Hannah’s Team 34-24. The first quarter was even with Open Black ahead by one goal 7-6. Open Blacks had a swap around of positions, and Hannah’s won the second quarter 10-6. Open Black’s Kristy Butler, Monique Pointon and Ari Summa played well to help their team win the next quarter 16-4. Hannah Mattiske and Ruby Stitt lead the way for Hannah’s Team, supported by Biranna Duncan. Open Black used all their skill and experience to win against very determined teenagers.
The Division 2 grand final saw Magpies winners over Swifts 41- 18.
Magpies took an early lead in the first quarter winning 12-3. Swifts were on catch-up the rest of the game. The half time score was 21-6 to the Magpies. Magpies’ Ella Nicholls and Paige Britton led their team to victory supported by Lauren Bate. The third quarter saw the goal count very even, with Swifts winning the quarter 8-7. Emily Gordon and Emily Gartner had a great game for the Swifts. Magpies dominated the final quarter, winning 13-4, to take out the grand final game.
The Division 3 grand final saw Joeys winners over Possums 15- 9. The first quarter was very even with Joeys winning 3-2. At half time Joeys scored another three goals to lead 6-2. Centre Amelia Hodges, goal attack Andie Hodder and shooter Katie Crouch for Joeys where hard to stop. Ebonnie Hopley also played well for Joeys. Best players for Possums were Claire Turner and Jess Hoey, while Hannah Williams supported well.
Joeys grabbed another to win the third quarter 5-4, and the final quarter 4-3 for the grand final.

Today is officially the start of spring with darting swallows spotted at the croquet club this week.
Results for golf croquet last Tuesday: Hat tricks went to John H Browne, Dorothea Croker, Bruce Field, John MacCullagh and Kevin Rubie, while two wins each goes to Lorna Field, Mary Hodges, Joan Littlejohn, Elvy Quirk, Bill Scott, Dorelle Scott, Lyn Simmonds and Alec Todd.
Aussie Saturday results saw the competition a bit stiffer as no one took all three wins but 15 members managed two wins each. They were Anne Stewart, Lorraine Todd, Alec Todd, Barry White, Kath Broderick, John H Browne, Dorothea Croker, Joan Littlejohn, John MacCullagh, Veva MacCullagh, Elizabeth McLean, Bob Murray, Kevin Rubie, Lyn Simmonds, Bill and Dorelle Scott.

Last Saturday’s Annual American Foursomes competition, sponsored by Milton Cartwright had a field of 23 pairs playing in conditions ranging from frosty to sunny.
The winners were not distracted by the roar of the footy semifinals crowd, as they were the early birds on the course. Paul Pymont and Frank Donohoe teamed very well to record a gross score 77 and a nett 65. Runners-up were Tim West and John Betland. They accumulated six birdies in their round for 68 of the stick and nett 66 1/8.
The ball sweep went to 69 nett, going to: 65 – P Pymont/F Donohoe; 66 1/8 – T West/J Betland; 66 7/8 – G Webb/ B Doyle; 67 7/8 – B Collie/B Everest and 69.0 – A Tucker/ C Barrett. The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Shine; 18th – P Pymont.
Sunday’s Stableford Medley was won by Scott Kirkman with 38 points, ahead of Max Haley with 36 points. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Max Haley; 18th – Scott Kirkman.
Taylor’s Terrors managed to scrap home in top spot in the ‘Winter 3’s’ competition.

The Platypi were victorious in both first and second grade over the Dubbo Roos in Forbes last week. The first grade won 30 – 14, while the second grade match had everybody on nerves end, but the Platypi pulled through to win 26 – 23. Both teams will play last year’s winners the Orange Emus next. After losing to them in the finals last year, the rematch is going to be an intense affair. Pictured above is some action from the second grade match last Saturday.
