The fine conditions last Saturday resulted in high scores for the five members who competed from 500 yards. Ian Ward recorded a double possible 100 with 10 central bulls. Jim Maloy recorded a very respectable 113 out of 120 in F Open (telescopic sights). This weekend the club championship continues from 500 yards. Shooting will commence from 1.30pm.

Dragons Are Back On The Water
Dragon Boating season officially kicks off this Sunday, but a few eager beavers just couldn’t wait another week. The cobwebs were dusted, the trolley put in gear and the boat wheeled down to the water by eleven excited paddlers for the first time since Lake Forbes was graced with its newest fountain. A few squeals were heard across the water as the Sweep teasingly steered a little close to the spray on such a cold wintry morning.
To start the new season a change of brigade has transpired to carry on the great work of the previous committee. The club has appreciated the commitment of Robyn and Neil Stephens and Warren Edwards. The position of new president was a very difficult choice with two outstanding contenders. Votes were fifty-fifty for Bill Thomas and Chris Sweeney, both dedicated and visionary men. Coming down to the wire, the final decision had to be drawn from a hat, with Bill’s name selected.
Chris Sweeney, with natural good grace, took on the demanding role of secretary. Michael Green continues on as treasurer, Kristine Dobell as registrar and Ian Prince remains equipment officer. Other new board members, Liz Mitchell and Beth Thomas took on the roles of grants officer and publicity officer respectively. The club will certainly move ahead and continue to develop under such a devoted team of good workers.
All that remained after the board selections was to appoint the new season’s head and assistant coaches. As Carmen Stephens has carried out the coach’s position with such aplomb, it was unanimously decided by the new board that they would continue on with Carmen as head coach. Taking on the role of assistant coach is Warren Edwards, a dedicated member who is passionate about our club, and so is sure to do a fantastic job. Congratulations to this excellent team.
So now that everything is in place, bring on the 2017-18 season! Of course, new paddlers are always most welcome.
You’ve never heard of dragon boating? It is a sport that originated in China over 2,000 years ago. Picture long, narrow boats, around 20 paddlers in two adjacent rows in each boat, and someone else in each boat beating the stroke time with a drum. Picture frantic paddling and fun. That’s it.

Kay And Squires Shine On The Course
The sun streaming across the fairways was no match for the golden glow emanating around Bruce Squires, whose final score was way above the heads of others.
On Saturday, the Mens comp was an 18- hole Stableford for the annual ‘Righties vs Lefties’ match, with a resounding win to the Righties, by 184 points to 154. While the Lefties were short on numbers the Righties had too much fire power on the day.
In A-Division Paul Kay scored 38 points in frosty conditions to win. Later, Graham Newport was runner-up on count back with 37 points. B-Division belonged to Bruce Squires, who scored many 3-pointers in his overall result of 42. Greg Webb took the runners-up prize, on count back, with 36 points.
The ball sweep went to 35 points on count back, going to: 42 –B Squires; 38 –P Kay; 37 –G Newport, P Grayson; 36 –G Webb, L Byrne, D Churchill, T Griffiths, M Cahill, M Watts; 35 –A Callaghan, M Spice. The NTP’s went to: 9th –A Davies; 18th –M Cahill.
Apart from Bruce and the other winners, most players scored around their handicaps. Ash Tucker tried to use a golf cart to cover his score of 23 points. Only slightly ahead was Ray Taylor, on 24 points.

Croquet Notes
Last week, the Croquet players turned up in force, unperturbed by the pea-soup fog that didn’t clear until late morning. The players held their monthly Birthday luncheon with a lovely gathering of members and their partners at The Forbes Sport and Rec Club. The boys prepared some delicious meals for everyone.
The Birthday Boy this month was Jeff Liebich, who had the cutting of the cake to himself as the other birthday members were unable to attend. In Tuesday’s Golf Croquet, hat-tricks went to John H Browne, Bruce Field, Robin Pols and Alec Todd while closely followed with
two wins each to Dorothea Croker, Merv Langfield, Veva MacCullagh, Evelyn Mahlo, Bob Murray, Bill Scott, Harley Stewart, Marj
Styles and Barry White.
Aussie Saturday results from 5 August included three wins each to Veva MacCullagh, Robin Pols and Libby Smart, while two wins went to Cherylin Cole, John Cole, Dorothea Croker, Merv Langfield, Colleen Liebich, Bob Murray, Kevin Rubie, Jill Rubie, Bill Scott, and Harley Stewart. Regan Courts Victory In Rockhampton
Local 17-year-old Regan Acret has been selected as part of the NSW Combined High Schools team to compete in the Trans- Tasman Squash series competition in Rockhampton later this month. Regan took up squash in mid-2014 after heading to the local courts to watch a neighbour play. He thought it looked like fun. “I decided to start having a hit, and really started enjoying it, so I thought I’d see if I
could get into it more seriously,” said Regan.
Regan discovered the local club competition, and began playing on Wednesday nights, learning the basics from Ken Comrie. He learned quickly, and was runner up in the under 15’s A-Grade in his first competition in Dubbo in 2015. Regan won the C-Grade competition in a
junior tournament in Bathurst in 2015, then won the B-Grade open competition in the same location in 2016.
He was then selected for the Combined High Schools Western Region Team, and competed with them in Sydney last June. The team came third, but Regan was the competition’s individual runner up, and was awarded the competition’s Best and Fairest medal, nominated by his fellow competitors. Selectors naturally snapped him up for the NSWCHS State team that will compete against players from Queensland and New Zealand from 21-24 August.
Regan’s mum is proud, and grateful to the people involved in helping Regan.. “I’m very proud of him with his outstanding determination, commitment to, and passion for the game,” she said. “I’d like to thank Forbes Squash Club, Murray Reid, and coach Aaron Moulds, for their support.”

Taylor And Carpenter A Winning Combination
On the weekend, the Men’s Competition was a Stableford Multiplier contested by 30 pairings. The winners, Ray Taylor and Bruce Carpenter, combined well and used their steady play to score an impressive 81 points.
A long way back were Andrew McDonald and Tony Cogswell, with 71 points. They had two ‘wipes’, but recovered well. The remaining scores ranged from 68 to 32. The ball sweep went to 62 points on count back, going to: 81 – Taylor/Carpenter; 71 – McDonald/T Cogswell; 68 – Shine/G Webb; 67 – Donohoe/Squires, Borger/Borger; 66 – Byrne/Hanns; 62 – Bown/Drane. The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Dawson; 18th – P Maher.
On the cards the scores for individual holes ranged from 9’s to zeros. But the best score on any hole, a 12, was shared by Pymont/Kay (on the 5th) and Dawson/Bayley (on the 7th). The Stableford Medley on Sunday was a quiet affair with many regulars playing away to help other clubs. The winner was Ron Morris with 35 points. There was no runnerup or ball sweep. There was no NTP’s either as no-one hit the green with their tee shot!
This week the ‘Winter 3’s’ competitors did play very well. The winner this week was Murray Field with nett 28. Following behind on 32 were: M Ewing, E Uphill, J Haley. About 10 Forbes players ventured to Caragabal on Sunday to play in their Special Event, a 2-person Ambrose. The field of 46 players enjoyed a good day. Forbes players among the prize winners were: Third on count back – Andrew Dukes and Ash Tucker with 62. Longest drives to Ash and Andy, on separate holes. Good team work by the boys.

Netball News
The Forbes Netball Saturday competition is drawing to a close with the last round of competition to be played this Saturday. The semi-final series will start with minor semi-finals in all divisions on August 5; major semi-finals on August 12; finals on August 19 and the grand finals and annual presentations on August 26.
Presentations will be held immediately after the last grand final games. All coaches are asked to nominate a player from their team for the judging of the Edna Jenkin Memorial Junior Encouragement Award, for players aged 11 and 12 years in 2017.
Nomination forms for this award are available at the office on Saturday. The award is for a player who has shown outstanding co-operation, enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the season. The Chris Read Memorial award will also be presented at this time. Everyone is invited to nominate a volunteer/helper, not a committee volunteer, who has helped whenever and where ever they are required, which is what Chris used to do when she was involved with the FNA.
Chris’ family wanted to continue, and acknowledge the volunteers, who worked like their mother had done in the past. Nomination forms for this award are available at the office on Saturday. This person does not have to be a registered member of the FNA, and anyone can nominate a volunteer. The nominations must be returned by August 5. The winners will be announced at the presentations.
The 2017 Representative presentations will be held at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Saturday night August 19. Times will be 6:30pm for 7pm, with other details to be finalised.
